The development of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology has provided techniques for a holistic approach to the study of karst groundwater contamination. While karst groundwaters supply water to a large percentage of the earth's population, its complex environments often have lacked the scientific examination and conservation measures typical of non-karst regions. In this study, GIS methodologies were explored to examine the relationships between land-use and water quality in karst watersheds. Eight watersheds throughout southern and western Kentucky were examined. The general path-integral formulation was set up for Casimir energy of the electromagnetic gauge field. By separating into transversal electric and magnetic modes, the problem was reduced to two decoupled problems for scalar fields which differ only in their boundary conditions. In each case, the Casimir energy was calculated for general plate deformations perturbatively. Results on both the normal and the lateral force between sinusoidally corrugated plates were outlined.

Preventing obesity and cardiovascular disease at early ages is important; however, few effective interventions for early adolescents have been reported. In this study, low-income, culturally diverse students from an urban middle school (n = 60) received four classroom interventions with the use of a combined Health Promotion/Transtheoretical Model to control fat in diet and increase physical activity. A control group (n = 57) received the usual classroom education. The data and information collected enables staff to determine pollution status and trends throughout Tampa Bay and it's tributaries. The two-stage combustor facility was used to investigate the process of chlorocarbon incineration and formation of products of incomplete combustion. For this purpose methylene chloride was used as a chlorine-containing compound. The propose of this research was to obtain a better understanding of the incineration process of chlorocarbons, such as methylene chloride, especially regarding its destruction efficiency and formation of products of incomplete combustion. For measuring near-real time very low concentrations of benzene and methylene chloride, on-line microtrap gas chromatography system was used.

Personalized handguns, also called "smart" guns, are handguns that can only be fired by the authorized user. Handgrip pattern recognition holds great promise in the development of the smart gun.

Two algorithms, static analysis algorithm and dynamic analysis algorithm, were developed to find the patterns of a person about how to grasp a handgun. When an incompressible fluid flows past a circular cylinder, vortex shedding occurs as soon as the Reynolds number exceeds about 40. Vortex shedding is usually undesirable, as it generates a significant increase in drag, as well an oscillating lift force on the cylinder leading to cross-stream structural vibrations. Flow control to either delay the appearance of vortex shedding or fully suppress it has attracted much attention during the last decade. Thermochemical. properties, ΔfH°298, S°298, and Cp°(T) (5<=T/K<=6000), are determined using different ab inifio and density functional theory methods for three chloromethyl radicals, CH2Cl, CHCl2, CCl3, all chlorobenzenes from monochlorobenzene to hexachlorobenzene, and all chlorophenols from ortho-, meta-, para-chlorophenol to pentachlorophenol. The B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) method is used in the structure optimization. The B3LYP/6-31G(3df,2p), QCISD(T)/6-3 I G(d,p), and CB S-Q methods are used in single point calculations of total electronic energies. Harmonic vibration frequencies are scaled for zero point energies and thermal corrections. Isodesmic reaction(s) are utilized at each calculation level to determine ΔfH°298 of each species. The correctness of a real-time system is very much dependent on the time at which a specific task is completed. Hence, satisfying a storage allocation request within bounded time is important. Fragmentation of the heap after repeated allocations and deallocations is a major issue for real-time systems, as most allocators depend on garbage collection for defragmentation of the heap, which might not finish in time to honor deadlines. Anomers of monovalent and divalent β-d-galactopyranosyl-(1→4)-2-acetamido-2-deoxy-d-gluco-pyranosides were synthesized under different glycosylation conditions, and evaluated for in vitro antimetastatic activity. Three compounds showed promising inhibitory effects on cancer cell attachment, spreading, migration, and invasion. Six divalent O-β-d-galactopyranosyl-(1→4)-2-acetamido-2-deoxy-d-glucopyranosides (29–34) were synthesized and their antimetastatic activities were studied.

Computational methods for identifying and screening the most promising drug receptor candidates in the human genome are of great interest to drug discovery researchers. Successful methods will accurately identify and narrow the field of potential drug receptor candidates. This study details one such method.

The method described here begins with the assumption that novel drug receptors have high sequence similarity to established drug receptors. The similarity search program FASTA3 aligns translated sequences of the human genome to known drug receptor sequences and ranks these alignments by measuring their statistical significance. Clustering is among the unsupervised methods used to group the results according to gene expression level. Dendrogram visualization allows graphical representation of the clustering. Next-to-leading-order QCD analyses of the ZEUS data on deep inelastic scattering together with fixed-target data have been performed, from which the gluon and quark densities of the proton and the value of the strong coupling constant (Formula presented) were extracted. The study includes a full treatment of the experimental systematic uncertainties including point-to-point correlations. The resulting uncertainties in the parton density functions are presented. A combined fit for (Formula presented) and the gluon and quark densities yields a value for (Formula presented) in agreement with the world average. Severe summer monsoon flooding occurred along the Yangtze River Valley (YRV) in 1998. The heaviest precipitation fell during June 8-23 and July 20-29 and coincided with midtropospheric blocking over northeast Eurasia. An index based on the difference between Okhotsk High and west Pacific Low intensity is developed in this study to quantify blocking; analysis shows that blocking and equatorward displacement of the upper-tropospheric east Asian jet preceded (accompanied) the June (July) period. This suggests that heavy rainfall during each interval was caused by different atmospheric processes. An examination of joint variations in the index and YRV precipitation during 1958-1998 revealed …

The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in the gene expression analysis methods of two data mining tools, ExpressionisticTM 3.1 and GeneSpringTM 4.2 with focus on basic statistical analysis and clustering algorithms. The data for this analysis was derived from the hybridization of Rattus norvegicus RNA to the Affymetrix RG34A GeneChip. This analysis was derived from experiments designed to identify changes in gene expression patterns that were induced in vivo by an experimental treatment.

Real time spectroscopic ellipsometry has been applied to develop deposition phase diagrams that can guide the fabrication of hydrogenated silicon (Si:H) thin films at low temperatures (<300°C) for highest performance electronic devices such as solar cells. The simplest phase diagrams incorporate a single transition from the amorphous growth regime to the mixed-phase (amorphous+microcrystalline) growth regime versus accumulated film thickness [the a ͢(a+µc) transition]. These phase diagrams have shown that optimization of amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) intrinsic layers by RF plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) at low rates is achieved using the maximum possible flow ratio of H₂ to SiH₄ that can …

Dry ravel is a general term that describes the rolling, bouncing, and sliding of individual particles down a slope and is a dominant hillslope sediment transport process in steep arid and semiarid landscapes. During fires, particles can be mobilized by the collapse of sediment wedges that have accumulated behind vegetation. On a daily basis, particles may be mobilized by bioturbation and by small landslides. Experiments on a dry ravel flume indicate that a basic expression of the momentum equation predicts the distance traveled by particles propelled down a rough surface. It is known that certain theories with extended supersymmetry can be discretized in such a way as to preserve an exact fermionic symmetry. In the simplest model of this kind, we show that this residual supersymmetric invariance is actually a BRST symmetry associated with gauge fixing an underlying local shift symmetry. Furthermore, the starting lattice action is then seen to be entirely a gauge fixing term. The corresponding continuum theory is known to be a topological field theory. This paper answers a question of Jan J. Dijkstra by giving a proof that all three-point sets are zero dimensional. It is known that all two-point sets are zero dimensional, and it is known that for all n > 3, there are n-point sets which are not zero dimensional, so this paper answers the question for the last remaining case.

Sulfurous volatiles have been shown to elicit avoidance behavior by snow geese (Cben caerulescens Linnaeus), possibly because of their association with potentially toxic levels of selenium in some plant species. We questioned whether an avoidance response to sulfur and sulfur-based products might be exhibited by other avian species, specifically European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris L) and whether the behavior might extend beyond the feeding context (that is, negatively affecting nesting). High throughput technologies, such as gene expression arrays and protein mass spectrometry, allow one to simultaneously evaluate thousands of potential biomarkers that distinguish different tissue types. Of particular interest here is cancer versus normal organ tissues. We consider statistical methods to rank genes (or proteins) in regards to differential expression between tissues. Various statistical measures are considered and we argue that two measures related to the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve are particularly suitable for this purpose. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve is a popular method for characterizing the accuracy of diagnostic tests when test results are not binary. Various methodologies for estimating and comparing ROC curves have been developed. One approach, due to Pepe, uses a parametric regression model with the baseline function specified up to a finite-dimensional parameter. In this article we extend the regression models by allowing arbitrary nonparametric baseline functions. We also provide asymptotic distribution theory and procedures for making statistical inference.
