Map and Chart--KGS

This map showing the regional characteristics of the Amburgy coal bed was prepared as part of the U.S. Geological Survey's National Coal Assessment program, which compiles regional maps and databases that provide a comprehensive assessment of the most important coal beds in the nation. The Amburgy coal zone is composed of a number of distinct coal beds that merge in some areas to form mineable coal bodies. For the purpose of this assessment, the zone has been divided into two beds; the Lower Amburgy (A) and Upper Ambury (B). The lower bed is of greatest economic significance and is the …

Mapped Karst Groundwater Basins In The Harrodsburg 30 X 60 Minute Quadrangle, James C. Currens, Randall L. Paylor, Joseph A. Ray

Map and Chart--KGS

This map shows karst groundwater basins in the Harrodsburg quadrangle, determined primarily by groundwater tracer studies. It can be used to quickly identify the groundwater basins and springs to which a site may drain. Major springs and the relative size of their basin or catchment areas can be evaluated for potential as water supplies. The map also serves as a geographic index to literature on karst groundwater in the area.

Public Trust Doctrine And Public Access In New Jersey, Urban Harbors Institute, University Of Massachusetts Boston Jan 2003

Public Trust Doctrine And Public Access In New Jersey, Urban Harbors Institute, University Of Massachusetts Boston

Urban Harbors Institute Publications

A discussion paper prepared as part of a series of focus groups on the topic of the Public Trust Doctrine and Public Access in New Jersey.

Public access is specifically identified as one of the key priorities of the Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA) of 1972. More importantly, the Act enables states to develop their own coastal zone management programs and to receive federal funding with which to implement them. There are a number of criteria that such plans must include before they can receive federal approval.

Accuracy In Spreadsheet Modelling Systems, Thomas A. Grossman Jr. Jan 2003

Accuracy In Spreadsheet Modelling Systems, Thomas A. Grossman Jr.

Business Analytics and Information Systems

Accuracy in spreadsheet modelling systems can be reduced due to difficulties with the inputs, the model itself, or the spreadsheet implementation of the model. When the "true" outputs from the system are unknowable, accuracy is evaluated subjectively. Less than perfect accuracy can be acceptable depending on the purpose of the model, problems with inputs, or resource constraints. Users build modelling systems iteratively, and choose to allocate limited resources to the inputs, the model, the spreadsheet implementation, and to employing the system for business analysis. When making these choices, users can suffer from expectation bias and diagnosis bias. Existing research results …

Research Strategy And Scoping Survey On Spreadsheet Practices, Thomas A. Grossman Jr., O Ozluk Jan 2003

Research Strategy And Scoping Survey On Spreadsheet Practices, Thomas A. Grossman Jr., O Ozluk

Business Analytics and Information Systems

We propose a research strategy for creating and deploying prescriptive recommendations for spreadsheet practice. Empirical data on usage can be used to create a taxonomy of spreadsheet classes. Within each class, existing practices and ideal practices can he combined into proposed best practices for deployment. As a first step we propose a scoping survey to gather non-anecdotal data on spreadsheet usage. The scoping survey will interview people who develop spreadsheets. We will investigate the determinants of spreadsheet importance, identify current industry practices, and document existing standards for creation and use of spreadsheets. The survey will provide insight into user attributes, …

Species-Rich Plantings Increase Biomass And Nitrogen Accumulation In A Wetland Restoration Experiment, John Callaway, Gary Sullivan, Joy B. Zedler Jan 2003

Species-Rich Plantings Increase Biomass And Nitrogen Accumulation In A Wetland Restoration Experiment, John Callaway, Gary Sullivan, Joy B. Zedler

Environmental Science

Our test of the hypothesis that biomass and nitrogen would increase with more species-rich plantings simultaneously vegetated a salt marsh restoration site and demonstrated that on average, randomly chosen, 6-species plantings accumulated more biomass and nitrogen than the mean for 0- and 1-species assemblages, with the mean for 3-species assemblages being intermediate. In addition, we found that individual species (from the pool of eight native halophytes) differed in their functional capacity, with Salicornia virginica (Sv) and Jaumea carnosa contributing the greatest biomass when planted alone, while Triglochin concinna had the highest tissue N concentrations. When planted alone, Sv accumulated comparable …

Anion Photoelectron Spectroscopy Of Solvated Transition State Precursors, Harry Gomez, Giovanni Meloni, James Madrid, D M. Neumark Jan 2003

Anion Photoelectron Spectroscopy Of Solvated Transition State Precursors, Harry Gomez, Giovanni Meloni, James Madrid, D M. Neumark

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Photoelectron (PE) spectra have been collected for the clustered bihalide anions XHX−∙(M) (X=Br, I) and BrHI−∙(M), where M=H2O, HBr, and HI, in order to probe the effects of strongly solvating species on the PE spectra of transition state precursor anions. The PE spectra of the XHX−∙(H2O) ions show similar vibrational progressions as the spectra of the bare BrHBr− and IHI− anions, indicating that photodetachment of the bare and hydrated ions accesses similar XHX transition state geometries on the X+HX reactionpotential energy surfaces. These results are consistent with electronic structure calculations that predict a double hydrogen-bonded XHX−∙(H2O) structure in which the …

The Ionizing Efficiency Of The First Stars, Aparna Venkatesan, James W. Truran Jan 2003

The Ionizing Efficiency Of The First Stars, Aparna Venkatesan, James W. Truran

Physics and Astronomy

We investigate whether a single population of first stars could have influenced both the metal enrichment and reionization of the high-redshift intergalactic medium (IGM), by calculating the generated ionizing radiation per unit metal yield as a function of the metallicity of stellar populations. We examine the relation between the ionizing radiation and carbon created by the first stars, since the evidence for the widespread enrichment of the IGM at redshifts z about 3-4 comes from the detection of C IV absorption. We find that the number of ionizing photons per baryon generated in association with the detected IGM metallicity may …

Wattle Size Is Correlated With Male Territorial Rank In Juvenile Ring-Necked Pheasants, Anna Papeschi, John P. Carroll, Francesco Dessi-Fulgheri Jan 2003

Wattle Size Is Correlated With Male Territorial Rank In Juvenile Ring-Necked Pheasants, Anna Papeschi, John P. Carroll, Francesco Dessi-Fulgheri

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

We used morphological measurements and behavioral observations to investigate the relationship between male ornaments and male social rank during the breeding season in a free-ranging population of one-year-old Ring-necked Pheasants (Phasianus colchicus). The sample was of birds of the same age class to avoid the confounding effect of age differences. Tail length, used by females in mate choice, and tarsal spur length, used by males as a weapon in fights, were not correlated with male rank, whereas the size of the wattle was the most important trait. This combined with recent studies showing that wattle size reliably indicates …

Air Temperature Errors Caused By Air Filter And Construction Effects On Hmp45c Temperature Sensors In Weather Stations, K. G. Hubbard, X Lin Jan 2003

Air Temperature Errors Caused By Air Filter And Construction Effects On Hmp45c Temperature Sensors In Weather Stations, K. G. Hubbard, X Lin

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

For non–ventilated air temperature measurements at weather stations, both ambient wind speed and solar radiation are known to affect the magnitude of air temperature measurement errors. The objective of this study is to explore the effect of the sensor’s housing and to quantify any stagnation or conduction errors. The HMP45C temperature and relative humidity sensor with a Gill radiation shield is widely used in remote monitoring sites. The use of a filter in the HMP45C leads to loss of ventilation, while the protrusion of the sensor housing below the Gill shield exposes it to radiation loading and potentially increased conduction …

Novel Technique For Remote Estimation Of Co2 Flux In Maize, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Shashi B. Verma, Andrés Viña, Donald C. Rundquist, Galina P. Keydan, Bryan Leavitt, Timothy J. Arkebauer, George G. Burba, Andrew E. Suyker Jan 2003

Novel Technique For Remote Estimation Of Co2 Flux In Maize, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Shashi B. Verma, Andrés Viña, Donald C. Rundquist, Galina P. Keydan, Bryan Leavitt, Timothy J. Arkebauer, George G. Burba, Andrew E. Suyker

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

There is considerable interest in assessing the magnitude of carbon sources and sinks for agricultural lands, grasslands, and forests. In this paper, we propose a novel technique to remotely assess CO2 fluxes in maize using reflectances (ρ) in two spectral channels either in the green around 550 nm or in the red edge near 700 nm and the NIR (beyond 750 nm). Differences of reciprocal reflectances [(ρGreen)-1 - (ρNIR)-1] and [(ρRedEdge)-1- (ρNIR)-1] accounted for more than 90 percent of the variability in mid-day canopy …

Remote Estimation Of Leaf Area Index And Green Leaf Biomass In Maize Canopies, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Andrés Viña, Timothy J. Arkebauer, Donald C. Rundquist, Galina P. Keydan, Bryan Leavitt Jan 2003

Remote Estimation Of Leaf Area Index And Green Leaf Biomass In Maize Canopies, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Andrés Viña, Timothy J. Arkebauer, Donald C. Rundquist, Galina P. Keydan, Bryan Leavitt

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Leaf area index (LAI) is an important variable for climate modeling, estimates of primary production, agricultural yield forecasting, and many other diverse studies. Remote sensing provides a considerable potential for estimating LAI at local to regional and global scales. Several spectral vegetation indices have been proposed, but their capacity to estimate LAI is highly reduced at moderate-to- high LAI. In this paper, we propose a technique to estimate LAI and green leaf biomass remotely using reflectances in two spectral channels either in the green around 550 nm, or at the red edge near 700 nm, and in the NIR (beyond …

Towards A Unified Approach For Remote Estimation Of Chlorophyll-A In Both Terrestrial Vegetation And Turbid Productive Waters, Giorgio Dall'olmo, Anatoly Gitelson, Donald C. Rundquist Jan 2003

Towards A Unified Approach For Remote Estimation Of Chlorophyll-A In Both Terrestrial Vegetation And Turbid Productive Waters, Giorgio Dall'olmo, Anatoly Gitelson, Donald C. Rundquist

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

In this study we tested the applicability of a method, originally developed for terrestrial plant leaves, to retrieve chlorophyll-a concentrations from reflectance spectra of turbid productive waters. We tuned the conceptual model according to the optical characteristics of the aquatic medium, and accurately predicted chlorophyll-a concentrations in water bodies over a wide range of optical conditions. Our results provide evidence that this technique may be considered as a general solution, independent of the type of medium, for assessing chlorophyll concentration in optically deep media using remotely sensed data.

Avhrr-Based Spectral Vegetation Index For Quantitative Assessment Of Vegetation State And Productivity: Calibration And Validation, Felix Kogan, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Edige Zakarin, Lev Spivak, Lubov Lebed Jan 2003

Avhrr-Based Spectral Vegetation Index For Quantitative Assessment Of Vegetation State And Productivity: Calibration And Validation, Felix Kogan, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Edige Zakarin, Lev Spivak, Lubov Lebed

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The goal of the work was to estimate, quantitatively, vegetation state and productivity using AVHRR-based Vegetation Condition Index (VCI). The VCI algorithm includes application of post-launch calibration to visible channels, calculation of NDVI from channels’ reflectance, removal of high-frequency noise from NDVI’s annual time series, stratification of ecosystem resources, and separation of ecosystem and weather components in the NDVI value. The weather component was calculated by normalizing the NDVI to the difference of the extreme NDVI fluctuations (maximum and minimum), derived from multi-year data for each week and land pixel. The VCI was compared with wheat density measured in Kazakhstan. …

Survival Rates And Recovery Distributions Of Canada Geese Banded In Nebraska, Larkin A. Powell, Mark Vrtiska, Nick Lyman Jan 2003

Survival Rates And Recovery Distributions Of Canada Geese Banded In Nebraska, Larkin A. Powell, Mark Vrtiska, Nick Lyman

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

We analyzed banding and recovery data for Canada geese (Branta canadensis) banded in Nebraska during 1990–2000. Survival rates were lower during 1996–2000 (adult: 0.688, SE = 0.016; juvenile: 0.611, SE = 0.029), than 1990–1995 (adult: 0.727, SE = 0.011; juvenile: 0.639, SE = 0.024). Average juvenile-to-adult ratio from banding data was 0.834 (SD = 0.485), resulting in an annual population growth rate (λ) estimate for 1990–1995 of 0.995 (95% CI = 0.021), and 0.922 (0.018) for 1996–2000. Our recovery analysis suggests that 67% of geese banded in Nebraska are shot in Nebraska. Over 30% of both juvenile and adult recoveries …

Urban Canada Geese In Georgia: Assessing A Golf Course Survey And A Nuisance Relocation Program, Larkin A. Powell, Michael J. Conroy, Kipling S. Balkcom, Joe Caudell Jan 2003

Urban Canada Geese In Georgia: Assessing A Golf Course Survey And A Nuisance Relocation Program, Larkin A. Powell, Michael J. Conroy, Kipling S. Balkcom, Joe Caudell

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Nuisance complaints about Canada geese (Branta canadensis), have risen in recent years. In Georgia, managers have responded by relocating some nuisance geese to rural areas. During 1993–1996, we used band recoveries of relocated geese to determine the efficacy of relocation as a management strategy. We also used data from a post-card survey of golf courses to monitor the urban subpopulation of Canada geese in Georgia during 1998–2001. Flocks considered by golf course superintendents to be a nuisance were larger (1998: 48.8 geese, 1999: 71.5, 2000: 73.2, 2001: 67.2) than nonnuisance flocks (1998: 13.1 geese, 1999: 16.7, 2000: 25.8, 2001: 18.1). …

Temporal Variations Of Extreme Precipitation Events In The United States: 1895–2000, Kenneth E. Kunkel, David R. Easterling, Kelly Redmond, Kenneth Hubbard Jan 2003

Temporal Variations Of Extreme Precipitation Events In The United States: 1895–2000, Kenneth E. Kunkel, David R. Easterling, Kelly Redmond, Kenneth Hubbard

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

A newly available data set of daily precipitation observations was used to study the temporal variability of the frequency of short-duration extreme precipitation events for 1895–2000 in the conterminous United States. Event durations of 1, 5, 10, and 30 day and return periods of 1, 5, and 20 year were analyzed. For all combinations of duration and return period, heavy precipitation frequencies were relatively high during the late 19th/early 20th Centuries, decreasing to a minimum in the 1920s and 30s, followed by a general increase into the 1990s. The frequencies at the beginning of the 20th Century were nearly as …

Using Earth Science Research Projects To Develop Collaboration Between Scientists At A Research University And K-12 Educators: Insights For Future Efforts, David C. Gosselin, Richard Levy, Ronald J. Bonnstetter

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The main goal of this pilot project was to improve collaboration between scientists at a large research university and K-12 educators. By involving scientists and K-12 educators in Earth systems research, we hoped to improve scientists’ awareness of current pedagogy and classroom practices, improve K-12 teachers understanding of actual scientific research and expose each group to the other’s unique culture. Eight research teams (comprising a scientist, pre-service teacher and an in-service teacher) participated in a four-week research experience, attended three half-day workshops, and participated in focus group interviews. This experience reinforced K-12 teachers views that scientific inquiry must be integrated …

Cross-Modal Enhancement Of Perceived Brightness: Sensory Interaction Versus Response Bias, Yoav Arieh, Lawrence E. Marks, Eric C. Odgaard Jan 2003

Cross-Modal Enhancement Of Perceived Brightness: Sensory Interaction Versus Response Bias, Yoav Arieh, Lawrence E. Marks, Eric C. Odgaard

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Stein, London, Wilkinson, and Price (1996) reported the presence of cross-modal enhancement of perceived visual intensity: Participants tended to rate weak lights as brighter when accompanied by a concurrent pulse of white noise than when presented alone. In the present study, two methods were used to determine whether the enhancement reflects an early-stage sensory process or a later-stage decisional process, such as a response bias. First, the enhancement was eliminated when the noise accompanied the light on only 25% versus 50% of the trials. Second, the enhancement was absent when tested with a paired-comparison method. These findings are consistent with …
