In the present work, suitably functionalized arylsydnones were used to synthesize a variety of ortho-alkynyl sydnones both as potential precursors to novel sydnoquinolines and to provide non-linear optical (NLO) species of interest to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB). The versatile intermediate, 3-(2-(trimethylsilylethynyl)phenyl)sydnone, was prepared in good yield by the coupling of 3-(2-iodophenyl)sydnone with trimethylsilyl acetylene under Sonogashira conditions. From this intermediate, several ortho-alkynyl sydnones were prepared via a one-pot desilylation with tetrabutylammonium fluoride and Sonogashira coupling with para-substituted aryl iodides. In addition, a three-reaction-in-one-pot procedure was developed to access some of these species directly from 3-(2- iodophenyl)-sydnone. Subsequent reaction of …

Proteus mirabilis, a cause of complicated urinary tract infection, produces urease, an essential virulence factor for this species. UreR, a member of the AraC/XylS family of transcriptional regulators, positively activates expression of the ure gene cluster in the presence of urea. To specifically evaluate the contribution of UreR to urease activity and virulence in the urinary tract, a ureR mutation was introduced into P. mirabilis HI4320 by homologous recombination. The isogenic ureR::aphA mutant, deficient in UreR production, lacked measurable urease activity. Expression was not detected in the UreR-deficient strain by Western blotting with monoclonal antibodies raised against UreD. Urease …

The structure of the set of all convex polyhedra foldable from a square is detailed. It is proved that five combinatorially distinct nondegenerate polyhedra, and four different flat polyhedra, are realizable. All the polyhedra are continuously deformable into each other, with the space of polyhedra having the topology of four connected rings.

In 1952, Dwyer and coworkers began testing a series of metal complexes for potential inhibition of cancer cell proliferation in animals.[l] The complexes tested were unsuitable for such studies due to their high toxicity. Therefore, no further work was done on the project. However, in 1965, Rosenberg and coworkers revisited the possibility of potential metal-based drugs. Serendipitously, they discovered that cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(lI) (cisplatin) inhibits cell division in E. coli.[2] Further studies of this and other platinum compounds revealed inhibition of tumor cell lines sarcoma 180 and leukemia LI2l0 in mice.[l] Cisplatin was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1970 …

This thesis reports the first complete synthesis of monriporynes A and B. isomeric diacetylenes that bear α, β unsaturated ketone functionalities. Recently isolated from the stony coral Montipora sp. these compounds are reported to possess in vitro cytotoxic activity against several human solid tumor cells. We have synthesized both isomers in three simple steps. In the first step, l-iodononyne was prepared by reacting 1-nonyne with N-iodosuccinimide and a catalytic amount of silver nitrate. This iodoalkyne was then coupled with propargyl alcohol using copper iodide as the catalyst to give 2,4dodecadiynyl alcohol. Finally, the diacetylenic alcohol was subjected to the Swern …

Define a “slice” curve as the intersection of a plane with the surface of a polytope, i.e., a convex polyhedron in three dimensions. We prove that a slice curve develops on a plane without self-intersection. The key tool used is a generalization of Cauchy's arm lemma to permit nonconvex “openings” of a planar convex chain.

CE-QUAL-W2 is a two-dimensional, longitudinal/vertical, hydrodynamic and water quality model. Because the model assumes lateral homogeneity, it is best suited for relatively long and narrow waterbodies exhibiting longitudinal and vertical water quality gradients. The model has been applied to rivers, lakes, reservoirs, estuaries, and combinations thereof.

Eutrophic conditions in the upper James River Arm (JRA) of Table Rock Lake have been linked to phosphorus (P) inputs by wastewater treatment facilities and increasing urban development in the upper James River Basin (3,770 km2). Since the majority of P in aquatic environments is bound to sediments, bottom sediment can function as both a source and sink of P in lake systems. This study evaluates the spatial distribution, physical and chemical characteristics, and storage of sediment-P in the active layer ( < 5cm) of bottom sediments in the JRA. The JRA makes up about 20% of Table Rock Lake’s surface area, contributes about 30% of the inflow, and has the poorest water quality of the entire lake. For this study, grab samples were collected in the main arm and tributary coves at the deepest part of the lake and at several shallow sites along the main arm. Concentrations increase in a down-lake direction in the main arm ranging from 5 to >2000 ppm P. However, water-column P concentrations show a decrease down-lake, indicating that sedimentation is removing P from …

Alluvial sediments record both hydrologic changes and variations of sediment quality affecting watersheds. This study uses urban pollution signatures as temporal tracers to date alluvial deposits along Wilson Creek located within Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield Park in southwestern Missouri. The creek drains Springfield, the third largest city in the state, which was settled in 1833. This study has three main objectives: (1) review historical documents to develop a pollution history for the watershed; (2) determine if there is a correlation between heavy metal and phosphorus concentrations in sediment cores and the timing of release of those elements into the creek …

A field-scale bacterial transport experiment was conducted at the Narrow Channel Focus Area of the South Oyster field site located in Oyster, Virginia. The goal of the field experiment was to determine the relative influence of subsurface heterogeneity and microbial population parameters on flow direction, velocity, and attachment of bacteria at the field scale. The field results were compared with results from laboratory-scale column experiments to develop a method for predicting field-scale bacterial transport. [1] Measurements of velocity and density profiles were made to describe the transverse structure of flow in Chacao Channel, Southern Chile (41.75 degreesS), where typical tidal velocities are similar to4 m/s. Current profiles were obtained with a 307.2 kHz Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) over 25 repetitions of a cross-channel transect during one semidiurnal tidal cycle. The 2.2 km long transect ran northeast/southwest across the channel. A northern channel (120 m deep) and a southern channel (85 m deep) were separated by Remolinos Rock, a pinnacle that rises to 20 m depth at similar to0.7 km from the southern side. …

The Colorado Canyons National Conservation Area (CCNCA) is located about 7 miles west of Grand Junction, Colorado. The CCNCA includes rolling saltbush-covered hills, pinyon-junpier and sagebrush-covered mesas, a 24-mile corridor along the Colorado River through Horsethief and Ruby Canyons, and over 70,000 acres of sheer-sided, red-rock canyons, natural arches, caves and alcoves. The 75,550-acre Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness comprises the heart of the CCNCA, with another 5,200 acres stretching into Utah.

The CCNCA was given a high priority for land health assessment, a valuable tool in developing the CCNCA Resource Management Plan (RMP).

Middleware technologies change so rapidly that designers must adapt existing software architectures to incorporate new emerging ones. This project proposes an architectural pattern and guidelines to abstract the communication barrier whereby allowing the developer to concentrate on the application logic.

We demonstrate our approach and the feasibility of easily upgrading the middleware infrastructure by implementing a sample project and three case studies using three different middlewares on the .NET framework.

Thin polymer films are used in applications such as electronics, biomedical devices and coatings. As the trend to make the devices smaller continues, a film's influence on a material's overall properties becomes more prominent. Previous studies have shown that thin polymer films have characteristics slightly different from those of bulk polymers. Film behavior has been characterized by examining thermal expansion, diffusion, conformation, density and glass transitions. The dynamics of glassy polystyrene has been investigated using a wide variety of theoretical and experimental methods. The segmental dynamics through the glass transition region, by which the glassy polymer becomes rubbery, are not well understood. Free volume, thermodynamic and kinetic theories have been used to describe the phenomenon behind the glass transition and some of those theories were tested with computer simulations. Different experimental techniques, such as NMR, thermo-mechanical analysis (TMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dilatometry and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) have all been also used to probe this important phenomena. In order to represent real-world images with a computer, a program has to relate three-dimensional images on a two-dimensional monitor screen. Several ways of doing this exist with varying degrees of realism. One of the most successful methods can be grouped in a "screen-to-world method" of viewing, which is also known as "ray-tracing."
This computer graphics technology simulates light rays within a 3D environment. Since light rays have predictable physical properties, the raytracing algorithm can attempt to calculate the exact coloring of each ray/object intersection at any given pixel. Base cation depletion in forest soils of northeastern North America is a continuing concern because of the ongoing elevated deposition of sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N), intensive-management practices, and the often poorly understood implications of land-use history on modem ecosystem function. This study of late-glacial and Holocene changes in lake-level and vegetation at Mathews Pond contributes new information about Holocene environments in northeastern North America. The research establishes a 12,000-year record of paleohydrology for the watershed adjacent to Big Reed Forest Reserve, the largest stand of old-growth forest in the northeastern United States. Mathews Pond is a 7.4 ha, closed-basin, groundwaterseepage lake located in an upland, forested region of the Aroostook River drainage system. This investigation applies information theoretic techniques to study the ordering and structure of the Ising antiferromagnet with quenched disorder on a triangular lattice. The pure system shows no phase transition due to the high degree of frustration present. However, when quenched vacancies are introduced randomly into this geometrically frustrated system, a phase transition at finite temperature, to an ordered phase, can arise. If the vacancies are introduced on all three sublattices of the triangular lattice, then a two-dimensional spin-glass transition occurs. This thesis describes the design, experimental performance, and theoretical simulation of a novel time-of-flight analyzer that was integrated into a high resolution electron energy loss spectrometer (TOF-HREELS). First we examined the use of an interleaved comb chopper for chopping a continuous electron beam. Both static and dynamic behaviors were simulated theoretically and measured experimentally, with very good agreement. We compared the hemodynamic and respiratory effects, recovery time, and cost of two gas inhalants (isoflurane and sevoflurane) for anesthetic induction and maintenance of beaver (Castor canadensis) during surgery to implant radio transmitters in the peritoneal cavity. Heart rate, respiratory rate, relative hemoglobin saturation with oxygen (SpO2), and body temperature were measured every 5 min for the first 45 min, and arterial blood gas was measured once, 25 min into the anesthetic procedure. Methods to better quantify beaver (Castor canadensis) population size need to be developed to assist in the direct control methods being implemented by Wildlife Services. Many state game and fish departments rely on lodge counts, cache counts, or fur harvest reports to estimate a station-wide or regional population of beaver. However, Wildlife Services is concerned with estimating population size on a per site basis to assist in estimating project costs and to minimize the number of non-target captures.
