Black Hole Multiplicity At Particle Colliders (Do Black Holes Radiate Mainly On The Brane?), Marco Cavaglia Sep 2003

Black Hole Multiplicity At Particle Colliders (Do Black Holes Radiate Mainly On The Brane?), Marco Cavaglia

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

If gravity becomes strong at the TeV scale, we may have the chance to produce black holes at particle colliders. In this Letter we revisit some phenomenological signatures of black hole production in TeV-gravity theories. We show that the bulk-to-brane ratio of black hole energy loss during the Hawking evaporation phase depends crucially on the black hole greybody factors and on the particle degrees of freedom. Since the greybody factors have not yet been calculated in the literature, and the particle content at trans-Planckian energies is not known, it is premature to claim that the black hole emits mainly on …

The Psychological Characteristics Of Obese Children, Thomas Taylor Mitchell Sep 2003

The Psychological Characteristics Of Obese Children, Thomas Taylor Mitchell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Several studies along with the surgeon general of the United States have identified obesity as a national health issue. Research indicates that adult obesity treatment has relatively poor long-term effects. Consequently increased attention has been given to addressing obesity in children. This focus is particularly vital due to the fact that children are one of the populations showing the most rapid increase in overweight and obesity. The purpose of this study was to identify the some of the unique psychological characteristics of obese children by analyzing the intake data of children and adolescents attending the Loma Linda University Growing Fit …

Enhancing The Cs Curriculum With With Aspect-Oriented Software Development (Aosd) And Early Experience, Konstantin Läufer, George K. Thiruvathukal, Tzilla Elrad Sep 2003

Enhancing The Cs Curriculum With With Aspect-Oriented Software Development (Aosd) And Early Experience, Konstantin Läufer, George K. Thiruvathukal, Tzilla Elrad

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Aspect-oriented software development (AOSD) is evolving as an important step beyond existing software development approaches such as object-oriented development. An aspect is a module that captures a crosscutting concern, behavior that cuts across different units of abstraction in a software application; expressed as a module, such behavior can be enabled and disabled transparently and non-invasively, without changing the application code itself. Increasing industry demand for expertise in AOSD gives rise to the pedagogical challenge of covering this methodology and its foundations in the computer science curriculum. We present our curricular initiative to incorporate a novel course in AOSD in the …

Ranked Set Sampling Based On Binary Water Quality Data With Covariates, Paul Kvam Sep 2003

Ranked Set Sampling Based On Binary Water Quality Data With Covariates, Paul Kvam

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

A ranked set sample (RSS) is composed of independent order statistics, formed by collecting and ordering independent subsamples, then measuring only one item from each subsample. If the cost of sampling is dominated by data measurement rather than collection or ranking, the RSS technique is known to be superior to ordinary sampling. Experiments based on binary data are not designed to exploit the advantages of ranked set sampling because categorical data typically are as easily measured as ranked, making RSS methods impractical. However, in some environmental and biological studies, the success probability of a bivariate outcome is related to one …

Substrate Specificity, Metal Binding Properties, And Spectroscopic Characterization Of The Dape-Encoded N-Succinyl-L,L-Diaminopimelic Acid Desuccinylase From Haemophilus Influenzae, David L. Bienvenue, Danuta M. Gilner, Ryan S. Davis, Brian Bennett, Richard C. Holz Sep 2003

Substrate Specificity, Metal Binding Properties, And Spectroscopic Characterization Of The Dape-Encoded N-Succinyl-L,L-Diaminopimelic Acid Desuccinylase From Haemophilus Influenzae, David L. Bienvenue, Danuta M. Gilner, Ryan S. Davis, Brian Bennett, Richard C. Holz

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

The catalytic and structural properties of divalent metal ion cofactor binding sites in the dapE-encoded N-succinyl-l,l-diaminopimelic acid desuccinylase (DapE) from Haemophilus influenzae were investigated. Co(II)-substituted DapE enzyme was 25% more active than the Zn(II)-loaded form of the enzyme. Interestingly, Mn(II) can activate DapE, but only to ∼20% of the Zn(II)-loaded enzyme. The order of the observed kcat values are Co(II) > Zn(II) > Cd(II) > Mn(II) >Ni(II) ∼ Cu(II) ∼ Mg(II). DapE was shown to only hydrolyze l,l-N-succinyl-diaminopimelic acid (l,l-SDAP) and was inactive toward d,l-, l,d-, and d,d-SDAP. DapE was also inactive toward several acetylated amino acids as …

Modular Verification Of Timed Circuits Using Automatic Abstraction, Eric G. Mercer, Chris Myers, Hao Zheng Sep 2003

Modular Verification Of Timed Circuits Using Automatic Abstraction, Eric G. Mercer, Chris Myers, Hao Zheng

Faculty Publications

The major barrier that prevents the application of formal verification to large designs is state explosion. This paper presents a new approach for verification of timed circuits using automatic abstraction. This approach partitions the design into modules, each with constrained complexity. Before verification is applied to each individual module, irrelevant information to the behavior of the selected module is abstracted away. This approach converts a verification problem with big exponential complexity to a set of subproblems, each with small exponential complexity. Experimental results are promising in that they indicate that our approach has the potential of completing much faster while …

Interactive Level-Set Smoothing For Photo Editing, Thomas C. Howard, Bryan S. Morse Sep 2003

Interactive Level-Set Smoothing For Photo Editing, Thomas C. Howard, Bryan S. Morse

Faculty Publications

This paper presents an interactive image-smoothing tool based on properties and manipulation of image level sets. This tool uses PDE-based level-set smoothing to preserve edge sharpness while smoothing noise and jagged contours. Unlike existing approaches using PDEs, the duration and areas of application are controlled interactively with immediate feedback to the user. Interaction issues are addressed, and parameters for adjusting the PDE are automatically estimated based on image characteristics.

Dynamic Sociometry In Particle Swarm Optimization, Mark Richards, Dan A. Ventura Sep 2003

Dynamic Sociometry In Particle Swarm Optimization, Mark Richards, Dan A. Ventura

Faculty Publications

The performance of Particle Swarm Optimization is greatly affected by the size and sociometry of the swarm. This research proposes a dynamic sociometry, which is shown to be more effective on some problems than the standard star and ring sociometries. The performance of various combinations of swarm size and sociometry on six different test functions is qualitatively analyzed.

Dynamic Traffic Grooming Algorithms For Reconfigurable Sonet Over Wdm Networks, Shu Zhang, Byrav Ramamurthy Sep 2003

Dynamic Traffic Grooming Algorithms For Reconfigurable Sonet Over Wdm Networks, Shu Zhang, Byrav Ramamurthy

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

The emergence of wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) technology provides the capability for increasing the bandwidth of synchronous optical network (SONET) rings by grooming low-speed traffic streams onto different high-speed wavelength channels. Since the cost of SONET add–drop multiplexers (SADM) at each node dominates the total cost of these networks, how to assign the wavelength, groom the traffic, and bypass the traffic through the intermediate nodes has received a lot of attention from researchers recently. Moreover, the traffic pattern of the optical network changes from time to time. How to develop dynamic reconfiguration algorithms for traffic grooming is an important issue. In …

Geometry And Topology Of Escape. Ii. Homotopic Lobe Dynamics, K. A. Mitchell, J. P. Handley, John B. Delos, Stephen Knudson

Arts & Sciences Articles

We continue our study of the fractal structure of escape-time plots for chaotic maps. In the preceding paper, we showed that the escape-time plot contains regular sequences of successive escape segments, called epistrophes, which converge geometrically upon each end point of every escape segment. In the present paper, we use topological techniques to: (1) show that there exists a minimal required set of escape segments within the escape-time plot; (2) develop an algorithm which computes this minimal set; (3) show that the minimal set eventually displays a recursive structure governed by an “Epistrophe Start Rule:” a new epistrophe is spawned …

Geometry And Topology Of Escape. I. Epistrophes, K. A. Mitchell, J. P. Handley, B. Tighe, John B. Delos, Stephen Knudson

Arts & Sciences Articles

We consider a dynamical system given by an area-preserving map on a two-dimensional phase plane and consider a one-dimensional line of initial conditions within this plane. We record the number of iterates it takes a trajectory to escape from a bounded region of the plane as a function along the line of initial conditions, forming an “escape-time plot.” For a chaotic system, this plot is in general not a smooth function, but rather has many singularities at which the escape time is infinite; these singularities form a complicated fractal set. In this article we prove the existence of regular repeated …

The Challenges Of Case Design Integration In The Telecommunication Application Domain, Luiz Fernando Capretz Sep 2003

The Challenges Of Case Design Integration In The Telecommunication Application Domain, Luiz Fernando Capretz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

The magnitude of the problems facing the telecommunication software industry is presently at a point at which software engineers should become deeply involved. This paper presents a research project on advanced telecommunication technology carried out in Europe, called BOOST (Broadband Object-Oriented Service Technology). The project involved cooperative work among telecommunication companies, research centres and universities from several countries. The challenges to integrate CASE tools to support software development within the telecommunication application domain are discussed. A software process model that encourages component reusability, named the X model, is described as part of a software life cycle model for the telecommunication …

A Browser For Incremental Programming, Andrew P. Black Sep 2003

A Browser For Incremental Programming, Andrew P. Black

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Much of the elegance and power of Smalltalk comes from its programming environment and tools. First introduced more than 20 years ago, the Smalltalk browser enables programmers to “home in” on particular methods using a hierarchy of manually-defined classifications. By its nature, this classification scheme says a lot about the desired state of the code, but little about the actual state of the code as it is being developed. We have extended the Smalltalk browser with dynamically computed virtual categories that dramatically improve the browser’s support for incremental programming. We illustrate these improvements by example, and describe the algorithms used …

Modeling Sediment Transport In The York River : Final Report, Jerome P.-Y. Maa Sep 2003

Modeling Sediment Transport In The York River : Final Report, Jerome P.-Y. Maa

Reports

Numerical simulation on the formation of an Estuarine Turbidity Maximum (ETM) is a difficult task because of the incomplete knowledge on cohesive sediment transport. For example, it is difficult to well simulate the erosion process when the bed erosion properties are only poorly known. It is also hard to simulate the settling process when the bulk density and size of suspended sediment flocs are changing with the ambient environments.

Despite of the difficulties, some processes can be parametricalized, even not perfectly, to make the simulation results close to observed. In this project, we demonstrated the possibility of using a constant …

Quantum Melting Of The Charge-Density-Wave State In 1t-Tise2, C. S. Snow, J. F. Karpus, S. L. Cooper, T. E. Kidd, T.-C. Chiang Sep 2003

Quantum Melting Of The Charge-Density-Wave State In 1t-Tise2, C. S. Snow, J. F. Karpus, S. L. Cooper, T. E. Kidd, T.-C. Chiang

Faculty Publications

We report a Raman scattering study of low-temperature, pressure-induced melting of the charge-density- wave (CDW) phase of 1T-TiSe2. Our measurements reveal that the collapse of the CDW state occurs in three stages: (i) For P<5 kbar, the pressure dependence of the CDW amplitude mode energies and intensities are indicative of a ‘‘crystalline’’ CDW regime; (ii) for 5<P<25 kbar, there is a decrease in the CDW amplitude mode energies and intensities with increasing pressure that suggests a regime in which the CDW softens, and exhibits enhanced fluctuations; and (iii) for P > 25 kbar, the absence of amplitude modes reveals a metallic regime in which the CDW has melted.

Ssm: Fast Construction Of The Optimized Segment Support Map, Kok-Leong Ong, Wee-Keong Ng, Ee Peng Lim Sep 2003

Ssm: Fast Construction Of The Optimized Segment Support Map, Kok-Leong Ong, Wee-Keong Ng, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Computing the frequency of a pattern is one of the key operations in data mining algorithms. Recently, the Optimized Segment Support Map (OSSM) was introduced as a simple but powerful way of speeding up any form of frequency counting satisfying the monotonicity condition. However, the construction cost to obtain the ideal OSSM is high, and makes it less attractive in practice. In this paper, we propose the FSSM, a novel algorithm that constructs the OSSM quickly using a FP-Tree. Given a user-defined segment size, the FSSM is able to construct the OSSM at a fraction of the time required by …

On Mining Group Patterns Of Mobile Users, Yida Wang, Ee Peng Lim, San-Yih Hwang Sep 2003

On Mining Group Patterns Of Mobile Users, Yida Wang, Ee Peng Lim, San-Yih Hwang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present a group pattern mining approach to derive the grouping information of mobile device users based on the spatio-temporal distances among them. Group patterns of users are determined by a distance threshold and a minimum duration. To discover group patterns, we propose the AGP and VG-growth algorithms that are derived from the Apriori and FP-growth algorithms respectively. We further evaluate the efficiencies of these two algorithms using synthetically generated user movement data.

Robert Oleniacz

The paper presents a general analysis of the suitability of individual elements of the flue-gas treatment system used in SGL Carbon SA in Nowy Sacz (Poland) for the graphitization process carried out in new LWG furnaces (Castner type). The flue-gas treatment system consisted of two installations: catalytic afterburning and flue-gas desulfurization. The analysis of the suitability of various methods of flue-gas treatment was based primarily on the assessment of the effects of their application, including the reduction of concentrations of selected components in post-graphitizing gases. The work also summarizes the results of evaluation of the functioning of the whole flue-gas …

Xmm-Newton Observations Of The Nitrogen-Rich Wolf-Rayet Star Wr 1., R. Ignace, L. M. Oskinova, J. C. Brown

Richard Ignace

We present XMM-Newton results for the X-ray spectrum from the N-richWolf-Rayet (WR) star WR1. The EPIC instrument was used to obtain a medium-resolution spectrum. The following features characterize this spectrum: ( a) significant emission "bumps" appear that are coincident with the wavelengths of typical strong lines, such as MgXI, SiXIII, and SXV; (b) little emission is detected above 4 keV, in contrast to recent reports of a hard component in the stars WR 6 and WR 110 which are of similar subtype; and ( c) evidence for sulfur K-edge absorption at about 2.6 keV, which could only arise from absorption …

This dissertation is part of a long term project intended to analyze software engineering technology trends and how they evolve. Basically, the following questions will be answered: How to watch, predict, adapt to, and affect software engineering trends?

In this dissertation, one field of software engineering, programming languages, will be discussed. After reviewing the history of a group of …

Selective Removal Of Nox From Catalytic Cracking Regenerator Effluent Using Wet Scrubbing With Aqueous Sodium Chlorite Solutions, Pin Gu Aug 2003

Selective Removal Of Nox From Catalytic Cracking Regenerator Effluent Using Wet Scrubbing With Aqueous Sodium Chlorite Solutions, Pin Gu

Dissertations

In most refineries, the flue gas from the regenerator in the fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit represents a key source of NOx, SOx, particulate, and CO emissions. Wet scrubbing systems have been used with great success to control particulate and SOx emissions from typical FCC regenerator flue gas. Development of relatively inexpensive and safe additives that can be used in existing scrubbing systems to oxidize and absorb NOx is important in order to increase the industrial options to meet the provisions of the Clean Air Act and recently proposed EPA rules. This paper explores the feasibility of removing NOx from …

Measurement Of The Nonlinear Refractive Index (N2) And Stimulated Raman Scattering In Optical Fibers As A Function Of Germania Content, Using The Photorefractive Beam Coupling Technique, Ferdinand Anayo Oguama Aug 2003

Measurement Of The Nonlinear Refractive Index (N2) And Stimulated Raman Scattering In Optical Fibers As A Function Of Germania Content, Using The Photorefractive Beam Coupling Technique, Ferdinand Anayo Oguama

Dissertations

One of the greatest challenges in optical communication is the understanding and control of optical fiber nonlinearities. While these nonlinearites limit the power handling capacity of optical fibers and can cause noise, signal distortion and cross talk in optically amplified transmission systems, they have been equally harnessed for the development of new generations of optical amplifiers and tunable laser sources. The two prominent parameters that characterize the nonlinear properties of an optical fiber are the nonlinear refractive index n2 and the Raman gain coefficient gR. These parameters are related to the third order nonlinear susceptibility [x(3) …

Thermochemistry And Kinetics In Pyrolysis And Oxidation Reaction Of Oxygenate Chlorocarbons, Neopentane, And Ortho-Xylene, Hongyan Sun

Dissertations

Thermochemical properties of chlorinated alcohols, chlorinated hydroperoxides and corresponding alkoxy, hydroxy alkyl radicals, peroxy and hydroperoxy alkyl radicals are determined by ab initlo and density functional calculations for modeling and optimization of complex chemical processes for combustion or incineration of chlorinated hydrocarbons. The entropy and heat capacities from vibrational, translational, and external rotational contributions are calculated by statistical mechanics, and the hindered rotational contributions to S°298 and Cp(T)'s are calculated by using direct integration over energy levels of the internal rotational potentials. The values of ΔHf°298 are determined using isodesmic reactions …

Understanding The Origins Of Metastability In Thin Film Growth; Tantalum And The Early Group Vb-Vib Metals, Neme Okechukwu Nnolim Aug 2003

Understanding The Origins Of Metastability In Thin Film Growth; Tantalum And The Early Group Vb-Vib Metals, Neme Okechukwu Nnolim

Dissertations

Tantalum (Ta) is a metal that is highly prized for its applications in a variety of industries, including the microelectronics industry, where it is largely used in thin film modifications in order to achieve various electronic, magnetic and structural capabilities in solid-state devices. Ta frequently forms metastable phases, including the well-known ß-phase, during the preparation of thin Ta films by standard film deposition methods such as sputtering and electro-deposition. In order to gain insight into Ta metastable phase formation, the Bain transformation mechanism is studied for Ta and the neighboring body centered cubic (bcc) transition metals in Groups 5 and …
