Anodic Dissolution Of Aluminum In Koh-Ethanol Solutions, Hai-Bo Shao, Jian-Ming Wang, Xiao-Yan Wang, Yi Zheng, Jian-Qing Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The feasibility of employing aluminum in KOH ethanol solution as a battery anode system was discussed. Weight loss measurement showed that the corrosion rate of Al is low enough to be used in sealed batteries. Through the measurements done by anodic polarization, EIS and galvanostatic discharge, it was found that A1 is electrochemical active in a wide potential range in this system, and its discharge mechanism is similar to that of A1 in aqueous solution. The discharge potential increased rapidly after a period of time, which might be caused by the discharge products depositing on the electrode surface.

The Investigation Of Bafesi/C Alloy Composite As Anode Materials For Li-Ion Battery, Rui-Xiang Feng, Hua Dong, Xin-Ping Ai, Han-Xi Yang

Journal of Electrochemistry

A novel BaFeSi/C composite was prepared by mechanical ball milling, and lithium insertion reactions on the composite electrode were investigated by cyclic voltammetry ,charge-discharge measurements, XRD and XPS spectroscopy. It is demonstrated that the capacity retention with indiscernible capacity decas during charge-discharge cycling. The improved cycling ability of the composite is suggested from a cooperative action by inactive FeSi_(2 )and BaSi_2 matrix and outer graphite shell, which both buffer the volumetric changes of the active Si phase and provide a good connection for electronic and ionic conduction during lithium insertion and extraction processes.

Electrochemical Behaviours Of Hemoglobin-Ddab-Modified Powder Microelectrode And The Application Of The Powder Microelectrode In Determination Of Nitric Oxide, Zhi-Mou Guo, Huan Liu, Jian Chen, Wen-Ting Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The electrochemical behaviours of DDAB-Hb-PME were studied in this paper. The (apparent) surface concentration of Hb was enhanced greatly by using the powder microelectrode (technique). NO reacts with Hb and absorbs on the surface of the modified carbon powder. Therefore, the output of the electrode was enhanced greatly by employing PME with higher reaction surface (area). The sensitivity of DDAB-Hb-PME is 3.1 mA/μmol·L~(-1)·cm~(2), which is much larger than the values obtained with the traditional electrodes. The detection limit is 9 nmol·L~(-1) and the linear response range is 9~100 nmol·L~(-1).

Improvement And Its Mechanism Of Storage Performance Of Ni-Mh Battery, Xiao-Feng Li Nov 2004

Improvement And Its Mechanism Of Storage Performance Of Ni-Mh Battery, Xiao-Feng Li

Journal of Electrochemistry

The storage performance of nickel-metal-hydride (Ni-MH) battery was studied by using galvanostatic charge-discharge and cyclic voltammetry. The experimental results indicated that CoOOH could not be completely restored after its being thoroughly reduced at lower potential, which might weaken electric conduction network in the positive electrode and result in fading of electrochemical properties of Ni-MH battery. Addition of nickel powder as a conductive agent into the positive electrode was beneficial to the capacity recovery after storage.

Electrochemical Investigations On Pitting Susceptibility Of Iron-Based Alloy, Wei-Shan Li, Hong-Yu Chen, Zhong-Zhi Yuan, Hong Li, Qi-Ming Huang, Dong-Sheng Lv Nov 2004

Electrochemical Investigations On Pitting Susceptibility Of Iron-Based Alloy, Wei-Shan Li, Hong-Yu Chen, Zhong-Zhi Yuan, Hong Li, Qi-Ming Huang, Dong-Sheng Lv

Journal of Electrochemistry

The formation process of passive film on iron and electronic properties and pitting susceptibility of an iron-based alloy are investigated by using linear potential sweep, alternative current impedance and electrochemical nose technologies. The relationship between reciprocal square capacitance and potential following the Mott-Schottky behavior is limited at a narrow rang of low potentials. At higher potentials, linear relationship between reciprocal capacitance and potential is obtained, which is ascribed to the increasing thickness of the passive film with potential. The donor density of the passive film is influenced by the formation potential of the film, passivator and microstructure. The decrease in …

Investigation Of Pulse Potential-Modulated Coulometry For Co_2 Detection, Hai-Chuan Wang, Bing-Liang Wu

Journal of Electrochemistry

A pulse potential-modulated technique was applied to measure the concentration of CO_2 in gas samples. In the first step, an anodic pulse and a consequent cathodic pulse were used to remove the organic pollutant and surface oxide on the surface of the platinized Pt gauze electrode before each experiment. As following, a given potential step was used to reduce the CO_2 into adsorbed intermediate on Pt surface, and the adsorbates produced were oxidized by a following anodic potential step. At same time the oxidation current of adsorbates were measured. A certain relation exists between the concentration of CO_2 and the …

Electrochemical Behavior Of Aluminized Steel In Seawater Environment, Cheng-Hao Liang Nov 2004

Electrochemical Behavior Of Aluminized Steel In Seawater Environment, Cheng-Hao Liang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The electrochemical behavior of aluminized steel in seawater has been studied by immersion test and electrochemical technology. The results indicate that compared with 20# steel, the aluminized steel has lower corrosion potential and stronger anodic activity in seawater. Its anodic solution will occur at low potential. The immersion test shows that the corrosion rates of aluminized steel and 20# steel are 5.80 mg/dm~2 dand 3.36 mg/dm~2 d, respectively. Through the X-ray diffraction patternanalysis, it was found that chloride ions exit in the corrosion products of aluminized steel. It proves the participation of chloride ions in the process of corrosion, which …

Concurrent Oh Imager And Sodiumtemperature/Wind Lidar Observation Of A Mesopause Region Undular Bore Event Over Fort Collins/Platteville, Co, C. Y. She, T. Li, B. P. Williams, Tao Yuan, R. H. Picard

All Physics Faculty Publications

We reported the observation of a mesospheric front with the properties of an undular bore by an OH imager, over the Fort Collins/Platteville area on 6/7 October 2002. Unlike the earlier bore observations, a Na lidar capable of measuring mesopause region temperature, zonal, and meridional winds was in operation concurrently. The lidar data confirm, for the first time, the existence of a collocated temperature inversion layer to serve as the ducting region for bore propagation, as required by the simple theory proposed by Dewan and Picard 6 years ago. In addition, the lidar data in principle provide sufficient information for …

The paper uses two years (1997–1999) of data from the North American Land Data Assimilation System at National Centers for Environmental Prediction to analyze the variability of physical variables contributing to the hydrological cycle over the conterminous United States. The five hydrological variables considered in this study are precipitation, top layer soil moisture (0–10 cm), total soil moisture (0–200 cm), runoff, and potential evaporation. There are two specific analyses carried out in this paper. In the first case the principal components of the hydrological cycle are examined with respect to the loadings of the individual variables. This helps to ascertain …

The O Vi Absorbers Toward Pg 0953+415: High-Metallicity, Cosmic-Web Gas Far From Luminous Galaxies, Todd M. Tripp, Bastien Aracil, David V. Bowen, Edward B. Jenkins Nov 2004

The O Vi Absorbers Toward Pg 0953+415: High-Metallicity, Cosmic-Web Gas Far From Luminous Galaxies, Todd M. Tripp, Bastien Aracil, David V. Bowen, Edward B. Jenkins

Todd M. Tripp

The spectrum of the low-redshift QSO PG0953+415 shows two strong, intervening O VI absorption systems. To study the nature of these absorbers, we have used the Gemini Multiobject Spectrograph to conduct a deep spectroscopic galaxy redshift survey in the 5' x 5' field centered on the QSO. This survey is fully complete for r' < 19.7 and is 73% complete for r' < 21.0. We find three galaxies at the redshift of the higher-z O VI system (z = 0.14232) including a galaxy at projected distance rho = 155 kpc. We find no galaxies in the Gemini field at the redshift of the lower-z O VI absorber (z = 0.06807), which indicates that the nearest galaxy is more than 195 kpc away or has L < 0.04 L*. Previous shallower surveys covering a larger field have shown that the z = 0.06807 O VI absorber is affiliated with a group/filament of galaxies, but the nearest known galaxy has rho = 736 kpc. The z = 0.06807 absorber is notable for several reasons. The absorption profiles reveal simple kinematics indicative of quiescent material. The H I line widths and good alignment of the H I and metal lines favor photoionization and, moreover, the column density ratios imply a high metallicity: [M/H] = -0.3 +/- 0.12. The z = 0.14232 O VI system is more complex and less constrained but also indicates a relatively high metallicity. Using galaxy redshifts from SDSS, we show that both of the PG0953+415 O VI absorbers are located in large-scale filaments of the cosmic web. Evidently, some regions of the web filaments are highly metal enriched. We discuss the origin of the high-metallicity gas and suggest that the enrichment might have occurred long ago (at high z).

Search For Doubly Charged Higgs Bosons Decaying To Dileptons In Pp̅ Collisions At √S =1:96 Tev, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present the results of a search for doubly charged Higgs bosons (H±±) decaying to dileptons (ll′ ) using ≈240 pb-1 of pp̅ collision data collected by the CDF II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. In our search region, given by same-sign ll′ mass mll′ >80 GeV/c2 (100 GeV/c2 for ee channel), we observe no evidence for H±± production. We set limits on σ (pp̅H++H--l+l+l-l-) as a function of the mass of the H±± …

A Bayesian Mixture Model Relating Dose To Critical Organs And Functional Complication In 3d Conformal Radiation Therapy, Tim Johnson, Jeremy Taylor, Randall K. Ten Haken, Avraham Eisbruch Nov 2004

A Bayesian Mixture Model Relating Dose To Critical Organs And Functional Complication In 3d Conformal Radiation Therapy, Tim Johnson, Jeremy Taylor, Randall K. Ten Haken, Avraham Eisbruch

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

A goal of radiation therapy is to deliver maximum dose to the target tumor while minimizing complications due to irradiation of critical organs. Technological advances in 3D conformal radiation therapy has allowed great strides in realizing this goal, however complications may still arise. Critical organs may be adjacent to tumors or in the path of the radiation beam. Several mathematical models have been proposed that describe a relationship between dose and observed functional complication, however only a few published studies have successfully fit these models to data using modern statistical methods which make efficient use of the data. One complication …

Survival Analysis Using Auxiliary Variables Via Nonparametric Multiple Imputation, Chiu-Hsieh Hsu, Jeremy Taylor, Susan Murray, Daniel Commenges Nov 2004

Survival Analysis Using Auxiliary Variables Via Nonparametric Multiple Imputation, Chiu-Hsieh Hsu, Jeremy Taylor, Susan Murray, Daniel Commenges

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

We develop an approach, based on multiple imputation, that estimates the marginal survival distribution in survival analysis using auxiliary variable to recover information for censored observations. To conduct the imputation, we use two working survival model to define the nearest neighbor imputing risk set. One model is for the event times and the other for the censoring times. Based on the imputing risk set, two nonparametric multiple imputation methods are considered: risk set imputation, and Kaplan-Meier estimator. For both methods a future event or censoring time is imputed for each censored observation. With a categorical auxiliary variable, we show that …

Absorption, Distribution, And Excretion Of [14C]-3-Chloro-4 Methylaniline Hydrochloride In Two Species Of Birds Following A Single Oral Dose, David A. Goldade, John D. Tessari, John J. Johnston

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Ring-labeled [14C]-3-chloro-4-methylaniline hydrochloride (250 μg per bird) was delivered to 21 red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) and 21 dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis) via oral gavage, and the distribution and excretion of radioactivity were determined at 15 and 30 min and 1, 4, 8, 12, and 24 h (n = 3 per time point). Direct measurement of radioactivity as well as measurement following combustion was accomplished using a liquid scintillation counter. Elimination from most tissues followed a two-compartment model, with very rapid elimination occurring between time 0 and 4 h and a much slower elimination …

Measurements Of Transverse Energy Distributions In Au+Au Collisions At √SNn=200 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez Nov 2004

Measurements Of Transverse Energy Distributions In Au+Au Collisions At √SNn=200 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez

Physics

Transverse energy (ET) distributions have been measured for Au+Au collisions at √sNN=200GeV by the STAR Collaboration at RHIC. ET is constructed from its hadronic and electromagnetic components, which have been measured separately. ET production for the most central collisions is well described by several theoretical models whose common feature is large energy density achieved early in the fireball evolution. The magnitude and centrality dependence of ET per charged particle agrees well with measurements at lower collision energy, indicating that the growth in ET for larger collision energy results from the growth in …

Automating The Extraction Of Domain-Specific Information From The Web-A Case Study For The Genealogical Domain, Troy L. Walker Nov 2004

Automating The Extraction Of Domain-Specific Information From The Web-A Case Study For The Genealogical Domain, Troy L. Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Current ways of finding genealogical information within the millions of pages on the Web are inadequate. In an effort to help genealogical researchers find desired information more quickly, we have developed GeneTIQS, a Genealogy Target-based Information Query System. GeneTIQS builds on ontology-based methods of data extraction to allow database-style queries on the Web. This thesis makes two main contributions to GeneTIQS. (1) It builds a framework to do generic ontology-based data extraction. (2) It develops a hybrid record separator based on Vector Space Modeling that uses both formatting clues and data clues to split pages into component records. The record …

Target-Dominant Chinese-English Machine Translation, Dan Su

Theses and Dissertations

Information exchange is increasing rapidly with the advent of globalization. As the language spoken by the most people in today's world, Chinese will play an important role in information exchange in the future. Therefore, we need an efficient and practical means to access the increasingly large volume of Chinese data. This thesis describes a target-dominant Chinese-English machine translation system, which can translate a given Chinese news sentence into English. We conjecture that we can improve the state of the art of MT using a TDMT approach. This system has participated in the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) 2004 …

Simulation Of Ultrashort Electron Pulse Generation From Optical Injection Into Wake-Field Plasma Waves, D.S. Dodd, J.K. Kim, Donald P. Umstadter Nov 2004

Simulation Of Ultrashort Electron Pulse Generation From Optical Injection Into Wake-Field Plasma Waves, D.S. Dodd, J.K. Kim, Donald P. Umstadter

Donald Umstadter Publications

A laser-plasma-based source of relativistic electrons is described in detail, and analyzed in two dimensions using theoretical and numeric techniques. Two laser beams are focused in a plasma, one exciting a wake-field electron plasma wave while another locally alters some electron trajectories in such a way that they can be trapped and accelerated by the wave. Previous analyses dealt only with one-dimensional models. In this paper two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and analysis of single particle trajectories show that the radial wake field plays an important role. The simulation results are interpreted to evaluate the accelerated electron beam's properties and compared with …

Electrical Properties And Raman Scattering Study Of Single Crystal Cs2nb4o11, Jianjun Liu, E. P. Kharitonova, Chun-Gang Duan, Wai-Ning Mei, Robert W. Smith, John R. Hardy

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We studied temperature dependence of complex capacitance, impedance, and polarized Raman spectra of single crystal Cs2Nb4O11. First, we observed a sharp-shaped peak at 165 oC in the complex capacitance, then found drastic changes in the Raman spectra in the same temperature range. Utilizing the pseudosymmetry search of structure space group, we attributed the observed anomalies to a structural change from the room temperature orthorhombic Pnn2 to another or- thorhombic Imm2. We also measured room temperature polarized Raman spectra in different symmetries of normal vibrations and assigned high wavenumber Raman bands to the internal vibrations of NbO6 octahedra and NbO4 …

Local Optical Properties, Electron Densities, And London Dispersion Energies Of Atomically Structured Grain Boundaries, Roger H. French Nov 2004

Local Optical Properties, Electron Densities, And London Dispersion Energies Of Atomically Structured Grain Boundaries, Roger H. French

Faculty Scholarship

Quantitative analysis of spatially resolved valence electron energy-loss spectra shows strong physical property contrasts for Σ5 and near Σ13 grain boundaries in Fe-doped SrTiO3, resulting in London dispersion interaction energies of 14 to 50mJ/m2 between the adjacent grains. The determination of local physical properties of grain boundary cores and the appreciable contribution of long-range London dispersion to interface energies provides new information on formation and control of interfaces in materials.

Role Of Wavelet Transforms In Image Restoration, Prashan Premaratne, I. Burnett Nov 2004

Role Of Wavelet Transforms In Image Restoration, Prashan Premaratne, I. Burnett

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Image processing techniques including image restoration rely heavily on discrete Fourier transform (DFT) for frequency domain representation for analysis of its frequency content. Even though wavelet analysis has been around for more than a decade, much of its potential as a tool to analyze time-frequency localization of signal has not been properly tapped. In blind iterative deconvolution where a degraded image is restored with minimum a priori information about the original image or the point spread function (PSF), it is almost impossible to evaluate whether a restoration is achieved or not without human observation. We propose a new approach using …
