Paleocene Cyclic Sedimentation In The Western North Atlantic, Odp Site 1051, Blake Nose, Mary Anne Holmes, David K. Watkins, Richard D. Norris

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Upper Paleocene (zone CP8b) cyclic sediment from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1051 on Blake Nose, western North Atlantic, alternates from white carbonate-rich to green carbonate-poor in response to precessional forcing. Compositional differences between the two bed types are minor: mineral and nannofossil composition of the beds vary subtly, but grain size of the terrigenous component and biogenic silica content remain constant. Iron content determined by sediment magnetic susceptibility and iron intensity determined by a core-scanning XRF correlates negatively with carbonate content and are higher in green beds. Kaolinite content of green beds is slightly higher as well. Green beds …

Control Of Trapped-Ion Quantum States With Optical Pulses, Chitra Rangan, A.M. Bloch, C. Monroe, P.H. Bucksbaum Jan 2004

Control Of Trapped-Ion Quantum States With Optical Pulses, Chitra Rangan, A.M. Bloch, C. Monroe, P.H. Bucksbaum

Physics Publications

The control-theoretical analysis of control of trapped-ion quantum states is described with optical pulses in large Hilbert spaces. The resonant bichromatic fields were applied to completely uncontrollable and controllable systems. The specific temporal shapes of control fields are important to determine controllability of trapped system. The Hilbert space of qubit-harmonic oscillator is made finite and Schrödinger equation controllable through resonant bichromatic fields.

Broadband Precision Wavelength Meter Based On A Stepping Fabry-Pérot Interferometer, T.J. Scholl, Steven J. Rehse, R.A. Holt, S.D. Rosner

Physics Publications

We have constructed a broadband apparatus for wavelength metrology capable of absolute accuracy at a level of better than 2 parts in 109. An evacuated plane-parallel Fabry-Pérot interferometer with continuously adjustable mirror separation is used to compare the wavelength of a single-frequency tunable laser with that of an iodine-stabilized HeNe laser used as a wavelength standard. This work details apparatus construction, a thorough investigation of systematic errors, and data analysis. The wavelengths of five Doppler-free 130Te2 transitions in the region from 475.6 to 490.8 nm have been measured and are found to be in excellent agreement with previous measurements. In …

High Precision Variational Calculations For H2 +, M. M. Cassar, Gordon W. F. Drake

Physics Publications

A double basis set in Hylleraas coordinates is used to obtain improved variational upper bounds for the nonrelativistic energy of the 1 1S (v = 0, R = 0), 2 1S (v = 1, R = 0) and 2 3P (v = 0, R = 1) states of H2 +. This method shows a remarkable convergence rate for relatively compact basis set expansions. A comparison with the most recent work is made. The accuracy of the wavefunctions is tested using the electron-proton Kato cusp condition.

Distributions Of Z-Dna And Nuclear Factor I In Human Chromosome 22: A Model For Coupled Transcriptional Regulation, P. Christoph Champ, Sandor Maurice, Jeff Vargason, Tracy Camp, P. Shing Ho Jan 2004

Distributions Of Z-Dna And Nuclear Factor I In Human Chromosome 22: A Model For Coupled Transcriptional Regulation, P. Christoph Champ, Sandor Maurice, Jeff Vargason, Tracy Camp, P. Shing Ho

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

An analysis of the human chromosome 22 genomic sequence shows that both Z-DNA forming regions (ZDRs) and promoter sites for nuclear factor-I (NFI) are correlated with the locations of known and predicted genes across the chromosome and accumulate around the transcriptional start sites of the known genes. Thus, the occurrence of Z-DNA across human genomic sequences mirrors that of a known eukaryotic transcription factor. In addition, 43 of the 383 fully annotated chromosomal genes have ZDRs within 2 nucleosomes upstream of strong NFIs. This suggests a distinct class of human genes that may potentially be transcriptionally regulated by a mechanism …

Mono- And Disubstitutions Of (Hepta-2,5-Diyne-1,7-Diol) Bis(Dicobalt) Derivatives - Selectivity In Nicholas Reactions, Richard Guo, Romelo Gibe, James R. Green Jan 2004

Mono- And Disubstitutions Of (Hepta-2,5-Diyne-1,7-Diol) Bis(Dicobalt) Derivatives - Selectivity In Nicholas Reactions, Richard Guo, Romelo Gibe, James R. Green

Chemistry and Biochemistry Publications

Bis(hexacarbonyldicobalt) complexes of benzyl ether - methyl ether or benzyl ether - acetate derivatives of hepta-2,5-diyne-1,7-diols undergo selective Lewis-acid-mediated Nicholas reactions with enol silanes, silyl ketene acetals, and allylstannanes, preferentially replacing the methyl ether or acetate function. Hydride nucleophiles are similarly incorporated selectively using a benzyl ether - alcohol derivative. Subsequent Nicholas reaction at the benzyloxy-bearing site may be accomplished with an identical or a different nucleophile, affording skipped 1,4-diyne-Co-4(CO)(12) complexes. In instances of lower selectivity for monosubstitution reactions with benzyl ethers, reverting to the use of a menthyl ether - methyl ether complex gives much improved selectivity for methyl …

Hole Drift-Mobility Measurements And Multiple-Trapping In Microcrystalline Silicon, T. Dylla, F. Finger, Eric A. Schiff Jan 2004

Hole Drift-Mobility Measurements And Multiple-Trapping In Microcrystalline Silicon, T. Dylla, F. Finger, Eric A. Schiff

Physics - All Scholarship

We present photocarrier time-of-flight measurements of the hole drift-mobility in microcrystalline silicon samples with a high crystalline volume fraction; typical roomtemperature values are about 1 cm2/Vs. Temperature-dependent measurements are consistent with the model of multiple-trapping in an exponential bandtail. While this model has often been applied to amorphous silicon, its success for predominantly crystalline samples is unexpected. The valence bandtail width is 31 meV, which is about 10-20 meV smaller than values reported for a-Si:H, and presumably reflects the greater order in the microcrystalline material. The hole band-mobility is about 1 cm2/Vs – essentially the same magnitude as has been …

Drift-Mobility Measurements And Mobility Edges In Disordered Silicons, Eric A. Schiff Jan 2004

Drift-Mobility Measurements And Mobility Edges In Disordered Silicons, Eric A. Schiff

Physics - All Scholarship

Published electron and hole drift-mobility measurements in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H), amorphous silicon alloys (a-SiGe:H and a-SiC:H), and microcrystalline silicon (μc-Si:H) are analysed in terms of the exponential bandtail trapping model. A three-parameter model was employed using an exponential bandtail width E, the band mobility μ0, and the attempt-toescape frequency ν. Low-temperature measurements indicate a value around μ0 = 1 cm2 V−1 s−1 for both the conduction and valence bands over the entire range of materials. High temperature-measurements for electrons in a-Si:H suggest a larger value of 7 cm2 V−1 s−1. These properties and those of the frequency ν are …

A Volumetric Assessment Of Ancient Maya Architecture: A Gis Approach To Settlement Patterns, Kathryn Sorensen, Jeffrey Glover, Scott L. Fedick

Geosciences Faculty Publications

This paper will discuss the general applications of GIS technology to our research in the Yalahau Region of northern Quintana Roo, Mexico. In particular we will address the use of a volumetric analysis as a means of developing an architectural comparative framework at both the intrasite and regional scales. The comparative framework is a powerful tool that allows us to investigate and visualize the distribution of social power both within the site of T'isil and across the region. The direct relationship between social power and architectural volume is predicated on the assumption that actors who utilized the largest dwellings were …

Electronic Properties Of Nacdf3: A First-Principles Prediction, Chun-Gang Duan, Wai-Ning Mei, Jianjun Liu, Wei-Guo Yin, John R. Hardy, R. W. Smith, M. J. Mehl, L. L. Boyer Jan 2004

Electronic Properties Of Nacdf3: A First-Principles Prediction, Chun-Gang Duan, Wai-Ning Mei, Jianjun Liu, Wei-Guo Yin, John R. Hardy, R. W. Smith, M. J. Mehl, L. L. Boyer

John R. Hardy Papers

Based on first-principles total energy calculations, we predict that NaCdF3 could be formed in a ferroelectric crystal structure. Using a symmetry guided search with structure optimization, we found two ferroelectric structures, nearly degenerate in energy, competing for the ground state: a rhombohedral structure with space group R3c and an orthorhombic structure with space group Pna21. The energies of both structures are ≈60 meV lower than the sum of those of the constituents, NaF and CdF2, implying chemical stability.

Watershed Study Results Offer Strategies For Reducing Erosion And Sedimentation Associated With Cattle Grazing, Lynn E. Moody

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

The Morro Bay estuary is arguably the most important wetland system on the south central coast of California. It supports commercial fishing industries, numerous recreation activities, and a variety of natural habitats. The estuary and its watershed, representing a diverse biological and economic resource to the people of California, are impacted by various pollutants, with sediment of particular concern. As part of a 10-year national monitoring program funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through California's Regional Water Quality Control Board (Regional Board), a paired watershed study on California Polytechnic State University's Escuela Ranch has shown that Best Management …

Human-Robot Interaction, Erika Rogers Jan 2004

Human-Robot Interaction, Erika Rogers

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The relationship between robots and humans is so different in character from other human-machine relationships that it warrants its own field of study. Robots differ from simple machines and even from complex computers in that they are often designed to be mobile and autonomous. They are not as predictable as other machines; they can enter a human’s personal space, forcing a kind of social interaction that does not happen in other human-machine relationships.

A Seasonality Study Of The West Virginia Stream Condition Index, Gene T. Hilton Iii Jan 2004

A Seasonality Study Of The West Virginia Stream Condition Index, Gene T. Hilton Iii

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The West Virginia Stream Condition Index (WVSCI) has not been rigorously tested for the effects of seasonal data collection. Scientific literature regarding seasonal impacts on biological indices is surprisingly limited. But most literature does agree that seasonal signals are small in comparison to variation between all possible biological conditions. Recently stream data have been collected from a full range of seasons by both West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection and myself. In this study habitat, benthic macroinvertebrate data, and WVSCI values were analyzed for seasonality. For this reason multiple independent data sets were utilized. The analyses covered in this report …

Distributed Hybrid Agent Based Intrusion Detection And Real Time Response System, Vaidehi Kasarekar, Byrav Ramamurthy

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

Wireless LANs are growing rapidly and security has always been a concern. We have implemented a hybrid system, which will not only detect active attacks like identity theft causing denial of service attacks, but will also detect the usage of access point discovery tools. The system responds in real time by sending out an alert to the network administrator.

A Load-Balancing Spare Capacity Reallocation Approach In Service-Rich Sonet Metro Mesh Networks, Lu Shen, Xi Yang, Byrav Ramamurthy

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

The next-generation SONET metro network is evolving into a service-rich infrastructure. At the edge of such a network, multi-service provisioning platforms (MSPPs) provide efficient data mapping enabled by Generic Framing Procedure (GFP) and Virtual Concatenation (VC). The core of the network tends to be a meshed architecture equipped with Multi-Service Switches (MSSs). In the context of these emerging technologies, we propose a load-balancing spare capacity reallocation approach to improve network utilization in the next-generation SONET metro networks. Using our approach, carriers can postpone network upgrades, resulting in increased revenue with reduced capital expenditures (CAPEX). For the first time, we consider …

A Load-Balancing Shared-Protection-Path Reconfiguration Approach In Wdm Wavelength-Routed Networks, Lu Shen, Xi Yang, Byrav Ramamurthy Jan 2004

A Load-Balancing Shared-Protection-Path Reconfiguration Approach In Wdm Wavelength-Routed Networks, Lu Shen, Xi Yang, Byrav Ramamurthy

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

Wavelength-routed networks (WRN) are very promising candidates for next-generation Internet and telecommunication backbones. In such a network, optical-layer protection is of paramount importance due to the risk of losing large amounts of data under a failure. To protect the network against this risk, service providers usually provide a pair of risk-independent working and protection paths for each optical connection. However, the investment made for the optical-layer protection increases network cost. To reduce the capital expenditure, service providers need to efficiently utilize their network resources. Among all the existing approaches, shared-path protection has proven to be practical and cost-efficient [1]. In …

Empirical Studies Of Test Case Prioritization In A Junit Testing Environment, Hyunsook Do, Gregg Rothermel, Alex Kinneer Jan 2004

Empirical Studies Of Test Case Prioritization In A Junit Testing Environment, Hyunsook Do, Gregg Rothermel, Alex Kinneer

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

Test case prioritization provides a way to run test cases with the highest priority earliest. Numerous empirical studies have shown that prioritization can improve a test suite’s rate of fault detection, but the extent to which these results generalize is an open question because the studies have all focused on a single procedural language, C, and a few specific types of test suites. In particular, Java and the JUnit testing framework are being used extensively in practice, and the effectiveness of prioritization techniques on Java systems tested under JUnit has not been investigated. We have therefore designed and performed a …

A Nonparametric Classifier For Unsegmented Text, George Nagy, Ashutosh Joshi, Mukkai Krishnamoorthy, Yu Lin, Daniel Lopresti, Shashank K. Mehta, Sharad C. Seth Jan 2004

A Nonparametric Classifier For Unsegmented Text, George Nagy, Ashutosh Joshi, Mukkai Krishnamoorthy, Yu Lin, Daniel Lopresti, Shashank K. Mehta, Sharad C. Seth

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

Symbolic Indirect Correlation (SIC) is a new classification method for unsegmented patterns. SIC requires two levels of comparisons. First, the feature sequences from an unknown query signal and a known multi-pattern reference signal are matched. Then, the order of the matched features is compared with the order of matches between every lexicon symbolstring and the reference string in the lexical domain. The query is classified according to the best matching lexicon string in the second comparison. Accuracy increases as classified feature-and-symbol strings are added to the reference string.

Chemistry Publications

Life is unique in Nature, and for us, it is precious. Life is unique in its complex patterns, and in its purposeful self-continuation. We belong to life and share its drive for self-propagation. Belonging to life then implies a human purpose to secure, expand and propagate our family of gene/protein life.

This purpose is best achieved in space, where life has an immense future. We can start now to secure this future, by seeding with life new solar systems. New species can develop there into intelligent beings who will further expand life in the galaxy. Filling the universe with life …

A Study In Modeling Low-Conservation Protein Superfamilies, Chang Wang, Stephen Scott, Jun Zhang, Qingping Tao, Dmitri E. Fomenko, Vadim N. Gladyshev Jan 2004

A Study In Modeling Low-Conservation Protein Superfamilies, Chang Wang, Stephen Scott, Jun Zhang, Qingping Tao, Dmitri E. Fomenko, Vadim N. Gladyshev

CSE Technical Reports

We present several algorithms for identification of new proteins in superfamilies with low primary sequence conservation. The low conservation of primary sequence in protein superfamilies such as Thioredoxin-fold (Trx-fold) makes conventional methods such as hidden Markov models (HMMs) difficult to use. Therefore, we use structural properties to build our classifiers. These structural properties include secondary structure patterns as well as various properties of the residues in the protein sequences. We use this information to model proteins via hidden Markov models, support vector machines and algorithms in the multiple-instance learning model. In 20-fold jack-knife tests, some of our models performed well, …
