Stable Isotopic And Trace Metal Analyses Of Two Porites Lobata Colonies - Oahu, Hawaii: Implications For Past Seasonal Variation And Sea Surface Temperatures And Anthropogenic Effects On The Reef Environment, Jonathan Macdonald

Geology Theses and Dissertations

Corals from the western and equatorial Pacific Ocean have been extensively studied for the purposes of generating paleoclimate reconstructions spanning the last several hundred years. However, in the central subtropical North Pacific, there are currently few published coral records extending beyond 10 to 20 years. The hermatypic coral species Porites lobata and Porites lutea have proven to be useful indicators of paleoclimate and past sea surface conditions at other locations. Here I have analyzed two Porites lobata coral cores collected from colonies from opposite sides of Oahu, Hawaii to assess their utility for developing multi-decadal length climatic reconstructions in this …

Structural Analysis Of The Gonic Formation In Berwick, Maine, Joseph F. Renda Jan 2004

Structural Analysis Of The Gonic Formation In Berwick, Maine, Joseph F. Renda

Geology Theses and Dissertations

RELATIONSHIP OF THE GONIC FORMATION AND NONSUCH RIVER FAULT TO THE NORUMBEGA FAULT ZONE IN BERWICK, MAINE
Located in southwestern Maine the Gonic Formation abuts the Nonesuch River Fault of the Norumbega Fault System. The rock types of the Gonic Fm. consist
predominantly of micaceous schist and lesser amounts of quartzite. Fieldwork suggests that the units have undergone transposition and thus appear to be
interlayered and pinch-out along strike. Granitoid rocks have also been observed and are interpreted as related to either the Lyman Pluton or White Mountain
Complex and serve as the backbone to the line of low-lying hills …

Evolution Dynamics Of A Dense Frozen Rydberg Gas To Plasma, Wenhui Li, Michael W. Noel, Michael P. Robinson, Paul J. Tanner, Thomas F. Gallagher, Daniel Comparat, Bruno Laburthe Tolra, Nicolas Vanhaecke, Thibault Vogt, Nassim Zahzam, Pierre Pillet, Duncan A. Tate Jan 2004

Evolution Dynamics Of A Dense Frozen Rydberg Gas To Plasma, Wenhui Li, Michael W. Noel, Michael P. Robinson, Paul J. Tanner, Thomas F. Gallagher, Daniel Comparat, Bruno Laburthe Tolra, Nicolas Vanhaecke, Thibault Vogt, Nassim Zahzam, Pierre Pillet, Duncan A. Tate

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

Dense samples of cold Rydberg atoms have previously been observed to spontaneously evolve to a plasma, despite the fact that each atom may be bound by as much as 100 cm−1. Initially, ionization is caused by blackbody photoionization and Rydberg-Rydberg collisions. After the first electrons leave the interaction re- gion, the net positive charge traps subsequent electrons. As a result, rapid ionization starts to occur after 1 μs caused by electron-Rydberg collisions. The resulting cold plasma expands slowly and persists for tens of microseconds. While the initial report on this process identified the key issues described above, it failed to …

A Novel Approach To Information Security Risk Analysis, Bilge Karabacak, Ibrahim Sogukpinar Jan 2004

A Novel Approach To Information Security Risk Analysis, Bilge Karabacak, Ibrahim Sogukpinar

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

A number of risk analysis methods became obsolete because of the profound changes in information technologies. Revolutionary changes in information technologies have converted many risk analysis methods into inconsistent, long lasting and expensive instruments. Therefore, risk analysis methods should be adaptively modified or redesigned according to the changes in information technologies, so that they meet the information security requirements of the organizations. By taking these requirements into consideration, a survey based approach is proposed for analyzing the risks of information technologies. This new method is named as Risk Analysis Method for Information Security (RAMIS). A case study is conducted to …

A Velociraptorine Tooth From Alabama And Its Paleogeographic Implications, David R. Schwimmer Jan 2004

A Velociraptorine Tooth From Alabama And Its Paleogeographic Implications, David R. Schwimmer

Faculty Bibliography

A single tooth recovered from the marine Mooreville Chalk Formation (Early Campanian) of western Alabama indicates the presence of dromaeosaurid theropods on the Appalachian subcontinent during the Late Cretaceous. The tooth compares closely with teeth referred to the small velociraptorine Saurornitholestes.

Automorphisms Of Free Groups With Boundaries, Craig A. Jensen, Nathalie Wahl Jan 2004

Automorphisms Of Free Groups With Boundaries, Craig A. Jensen, Nathalie Wahl

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The automorphisms of free groups with boundaries form a family of groups An,k closely related to mapping class groups, with the standard automorphisms of free groups as An,0 and (essentially) the symmetric automorphisms of free groups as A0,k. We construct a contractible space Ln,k on which An,k acts with finite stabilizers and finite quotient space and deduce a range for the virtual cohomological dimension of An,k. We also give a presentation of the groups and calculate their first homology group.

Homology Of Holomorphs Of Free Groups, Craig A. Jensen Jan 2004

Homology Of Holomorphs Of Free Groups, Craig A. Jensen

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Let Fn be the free group on n letters and let Aut(Fn), Out(Fn) denote the automorphism group and the outer automorphism group of Fn. In this paper the purpose is to obtain some new results on stability and to calculate the mod-p homology of the holomorph of Fn for odd primes in dimensions 1 and 2, and the rational homology in dimensions from 1 through 5.

Generalized Geologic Map For Land-Use Planning: Henderson County, Kentucky, E. Glynn Beck, David A. Williams, Daniel I. Carey Jan 2004

Generalized Geologic Map For Land-Use Planning: Henderson County, Kentucky, E. Glynn Beck, David A. Williams, Daniel I. Carey

Map and Chart--KGS

This map is not intended to be used for selecting individual sites. Its purpose is to inform land-use planners, government officials, and the public in a general way about geologic bedrock conditions that affect the selection of sites for various purposes. The properties of thick soils may supercede those of the underlying bedrock and should be considered on a site-to-site basis. At any site, it is important to understand the characteristics of both the soils and the underlying rock.
