Using Spki/Sdsi For Distributed Maintenance Of Attribute Release Policies In Shibboleth, Sidharth Nazareth, Sean W. Smith Jan 2004

Using Spki/Sdsi For Distributed Maintenance Of Attribute Release Policies In Shibboleth, Sidharth Nazareth, Sean W. Smith

Computer Science Technical Reports

The Shibboleth middleware from Internet2 provides a way for users at higher-education institutions to access remote electronic content in compliance with the inter-institutional license agreements that govern such access. To protect end-user privacy, Shibboleth permits users to construct attribute release policies that control what user credentials a given content provider can obtain. However, Shibboleth leaves unspecified how to construct these policies. To be effective, a solution needs to accommodate the typical nature of a university: a set of decentralized fiefdoms. This need argues for a public-key infrastructure (PKI) approach---since public-key cryptography does not require parties to agree on a secret …

Senior Thesis Work, Corey Jansen

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

In closing, it is important to remember, as stated earlier, that no one can prove exactly what it was that the authors of Genesis were trying to get across to us. It is valid to note, however, that the stories they were trying to get across were intended for and more properly understood by the people at that time and place. While they form the basis of many of our beliefs in Christianity, they weren't written with the realization that thousands of years later there would be great scientific discoveries that would teach us more about the world and about …

Frobenius Classes In Alternating Groups, David P. Roberts Jan 2004

Frobenius Classes In Alternating Groups, David P. Roberts

Mathematics Publications

We present a method, based on an old idea of Serre, for completely computing Frobenius classes in alternating groups. We contrast this method with other approaches in examples involving the alternating groups A3 and A9. The method can be useful for proper subgroups of alternating groups as well, and we present examples involving the 168-element group PSL2(7) = GL3(2) and the Mathieu group M24.

We compute all nonic extensions of Q3 and find that there are 795 of them up to isomorphism. We describe how to compute the associated Galois group of such a field, and also the slopes measuring wild ramification. We present summarizing tables and a sample application to number fields.

An Abc Construction Of Number Fields, David P. Roberts Jan 2004

An Abc Construction Of Number Fields, David P. Roberts

Mathematics Publications

We describe a general three step method for constructing number fields with Lie-type Galois groups and discriminants factoring into powers of specified primes. The first step involves extremal solutions of the matrix equation ABC = I. The second step involves extremal polynomial solutions of the equation A(x) + B(x) + C(x) = 0. The third step involves integer solutions of the generalized Fermat equation axp + byq + czr = 0. We concentrate here on details associated to the third step and give examples where the field discriminants have the form ±2a3b .

Human Rights, Health And The Environment, David Gillespie Jan 2004

Human Rights, Health And The Environment, David Gillespie

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Environmental health and human rights are inextricably linked. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 3, “Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person.” Given that the earth is the source of the basic necessities of human life, any discussion about health and human rights must be attentive to its inherent environmental aspects. International conventions, documents and reports such as Agenda 21 (1992) and The Draft Declaration of Human Rights and the Environment (1994) have expressly argued for such an integrated approach. In response, a plethora of works over the past decade have expanded the …

Uniqueness Theorems In Bioluminescence Tomography, Ge Wang, Yi Li, Ming Jiang Jan 2004

Uniqueness Theorems In Bioluminescence Tomography, Ge Wang, Yi Li, Ming Jiang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Motivated by bioluminescent imaging needs for studies on gene therapy and other applications in the mouse models, a bioluminescence tomography (BLT) system is being developed in the University of Iowa. While the forward imaging model is described by the well-known diffusion equation, the inverse problem is to recover an internal bioluminescent source distribution subject to Cauchy data. Our primary goal in this paper is to establish the solution uniqueness for BLT under practical constraints despite the ill-posedness of the inverse problem in the general case. After a review on the inverse source literature, we demonstrate that in the general case …

The Dual Spectral Set Conjecture, Steen Pedersen

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Suppose that Λ = (aZ + b) ∪ (cZ + d) where a, b, c, d are real numbers such that a ≠ 0 and c ≠ 0. The union is not assumed to be disjoint. It is shown that the translates Ω + λ, λ is an element of Λ, tile the real line for some bounded measurable set Ω if and only if the exponentials eλ(x) = ei2πλx, λ is an element of Λ, form an orthogonal basis for some bounded measurable set Ω'.

A Mixed-Method Investigation Of The Solo In A Wilderness Experience Program, Andrew J. Bobilya, Kenneth R. Kalisch, Leo H. Mcavoy, Jeffrey A. Jacobs

Research in Outdoor Education

The purpose of this study was to investigate the participants' perceptions of an organized solo within a wilderness experience program and the influence that the participants themselves and the environment have on their perception. The literature suggests that many factors influence one's ability to experience wilderness solitude and to engage in meaningful reflection that may lead to personal growth (Daniel, 2003; Fredrickson & Anderson, 1999; Hammitt,1982; Hendee & Brown, 1988; Koch, 1994; McIntosh, 1989; Norris, 2001; Richley, 1992; Stringer & McAvoy, 1992). Two of these factors can be categorized as the participant(s) and the environment; both are considered key program …

The Impacts Of Satellite Phone Technology On A North Carolina Outward Bound School Experience, Tommy Holden Jan 2004

The Impacts Of Satellite Phone Technology On A North Carolina Outward Bound School Experience, Tommy Holden

Research in Outdoor Education

Over the last 20 years, adventure-based programs have flourished resulting in additional use of wilderness areas. One of the many factors contributing to this growth is the development and use of new technologies. "New technology ... has allowed backcountry users to greatly expand their reach ... " (McKay, 2000, pg. 150). Adventure-based programs are no exception to the use of this technology. For example, many programs now carry cellular or satellite phones into the backcountry, required as part of their risk management plans. However, the effects of this communications technology on the participants' wilderness and adventure-based experience have yet to …

Environmental Sensitivity And Experience Preferences In Outdoor Recreation Participation, Tinelle Bustam, Anderson B. Young, Sharon L. Todd Jan 2004

Environmental Sensitivity And Experience Preferences In Outdoor Recreation Participation, Tinelle Bustam, Anderson B. Young, Sharon L. Todd

Research in Outdoor Education

In the past 30 years, a number of researchers have attempted to understand what makes people care about the environment or what underlies "environmental sensitivity." Most of this research is rooted in the theory that environmental sensitivity (ES) is the first step in a developmental process that.leads persons in the direction of feeling what Chawla (1998) calls "ownership" and "empowerment" (p. 11) regarding protection of the environment· Some early researchers focused on.individuals' self-claimed influences on environmental sensitivity based on "significant life experiences" (Peterson, 1982; Tanner, 1980}; while others attempted to find an association between outdoor participation and environmental concern (Dunlap …

The Relationship Between Summer Camp Employment And Emotional Intelligence, Jeffrey A. Jacobs, Leo H. Mcavoy, Andrew J. Bobilya Jan 2004

The Relationship Between Summer Camp Employment And Emotional Intelligence, Jeffrey A. Jacobs, Leo H. Mcavoy, Andrew J. Bobilya

Research in Outdoor Education

Camping professionals have long claimed that summer camp employment provides camp staff with a number of benefits. The summer camp staff experience has been shown to have a positive effect on the staff members' personal, social and emotional growth (Bialeschki, Henderson, & Dahowski, 1998; DeGraff & Glover, 2002). Yet, some influentia. others such as parents and human resources professionals have questioned the wisdom of a college student spending a summer of "fun in the sun", working at a summer camp for low pay.

The concept of emotional intelligence has been recently gaining favor in the human resource management arena, and …

The Effects Of Intentional Recreation Programming On Internalization Of Type 1 Diabetes Management Among Adolescents, Eddie Hill, Jim Sibthorp Jan 2004

The Effects Of Intentional Recreation Programming On Internalization Of Type 1 Diabetes Management Among Adolescents, Eddie Hill, Jim Sibthorp

Research in Outdoor Education

This study, with the help of the Utah Association of Diabetes Educators, attempted to determine the effectiveness of using self-determination theory (SDT) at an adolescent diabetes camp to increase internalization of diabetes management. Existing evidence indicates that adolescents manage less than 20% of their diabetes, far less than needed (Anderson, 1985). Failure to manage and internalize behavior for regulating glycemic levels can lead to a number of very significant problems (Bryden, Peveler, Stein, Neil, Mayou & Dunger, 2001). This limited internalized behavior·may be explained by SDT. Self determination theory provides a basis for creating an autonomy supportive. environment while fostering …

This paper examines the role of spirituality in some explicitly religious outdoor environmental programs. As fitting for such a complex research topic that is not yet well understood, a mostly descriptive and narrative mixed methodology is used to characterize a set of Christian and Jewish outdoor programs that demonstrate an original combination of outdoor and environmental education within their spiritual context. Such analysis can help broaden the base of outdoor education spirituality research, can increase awareness of traditionally religious perspectives operative in outdoor education and environmental education and can suggest models for. outdoor educators within religious traditions. Finally, it can …

Using Experience Sampling Method To Understand The Environment For Reflective Learning, Taito Okamura Jan 2004

Using Experience Sampling Method To Understand The Environment For Reflective Learning, Taito Okamura

Research in Outdoor Education

The purpose of this study was to identify the appropriate learning environment for reflective learning during a five-day wilderness adventure program by measuring participant's perception of "yutori", which was a similar concept to "leisure as a state of mind" using Experience Sampling Method (ESM). This study was conducted under the assumption that a learning environment where participants· perceive "yutori', is appropriate for spontaneous reflective learning, based on Nishino's studies that positive mood appears when perceiving "yutori" (Nishino & Chinen, 1998) and that perception of "yutori" relates to intrinsic motivation and freedom of choice for the behavior (Nishino, 1999).

Learning Styles Of College Students Enrolled In An Exeerience-Based Outdoor Leadership Program, Amy Shellman, Alan Ewert

Research in Outdoor Education

The purpose of this study was to further the understanding of factors that may influence learning and, more specifically, how certain learning environments may affect individual learning style preferences. As is often the case with many outdoor programs, the emphasis is placed on experiential learning, or learning by doing. This is in contrast to more traditional college learning, which often relies heavily on didactic teaching where the instructor spends much of the time teaching in a lecture format. For this study, the learning style preferences of college students enrolled in an experientially-based outdoor leadership program were compared with those of …
