Distributed Polarizability Analysis For Para-Nitroaniline And Meta-Nitroaniline: Functional Group And Charge-Transfer Contributions, Marc In Het Panhuis, R W. Munn, P L A Popelier Jan 2004

Distributed Polarizability Analysis For Para-Nitroaniline And Meta-Nitroaniline: Functional Group And Charge-Transfer Contributions, Marc In Het Panhuis, R W. Munn, P L A Popelier

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Topological partitioning of electronic properties is used to investigate the polarizability of para-nitroaniline and meta-nitroaniline. The distributed polarizabilities for atoms are combined into total local or generalized distributed contributions for the amino, ring, and nitro functional groups; generalized distributed group contributions have not been calculated before. The local group contributions are transferable between the two molecules only when charge transfer is suppressed, but the generalized distributed contributions prove surprisingly similar in the two molecules, apparently because they treat charge-transfer contributions explicitly.

Refractive-Index Measurements Of Zinc Germanium Diphosphide At 300 And 77 K By Use Of A Modified Michelson Interferometer, Glen D. Gillen, Shekhar Guha

Physics

A method to determine the absolute refractive index of materials available in the shape of flat wafers with parallel sides by using interferometric techniques is presented. With this method, nondestructive, sample-specific measurements can be made. The method is tested by using silicon, germanium and zinc selenide, and measurements for both the ordinary and extraordinary axes of ZnGeP2 for temperatures of 300 and 77 K are reported.

Amps-1d Modeling Of A-Si:H N^{+}-I-N^{+} Structure: The Validity Of Space Charge Limited Current Analysis, Aynur Eray, G. Nobile

Turkish Journal of Physics

In this paper, the AMPS-1D (Analysis of Microelectronic and photonic structure) simulation program is used to understand the origin of the differences observed in Space Charge Limited Current (SCLC) analysis in thin and thick a-Si:H n^{ +} -i- n^{+} structure. For that purpose, the problem of applicability of SCLC measurements to n^{+}-i-n^{+} a-Si:H samples are investigated by using both the thin (0.3 \mu m) and thick (3 \mu m) samples. The simulation results show that activation energy in thick samples is larger than in thinner samples, which are an agreement with the experimental results. It is emphasized that this method …

Estimating Energy Savings In Compressed Air Systems, Chris Schmidt, J. Kelly Kissock Jan 2004

Estimating Energy Savings In Compressed Air Systems, Chris Schmidt, J. Kelly Kissock

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Compressed air is typically one of the most expensive utilities in an industrial facility. As a result, potential savings opportunities are aggressively sought out and identified. Once identified, projected energy savings must be calculated in order to justify the cost of implementing the savings opportunity. It is important to calculate projected energy and cost savings as accurately as possible. Unfortunately, savings are frequently overestimated because the methods used to estimate savings neglect to consider important factors such as compressor control and type, storage, and multiple compressor operation.

In this paper, a methodology is presented for modeling air compressor performance and …

An Algorithm To Recognise Small Seifert Fiber Spaces, J. Hyam Rubinstein Jan 2004

An Algorithm To Recognise Small Seifert Fiber Spaces, J. Hyam Rubinstein

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The homeomorphism problem is, given two compact n-manifolds, is there an algorithm to decide if the manifolds are homeomorphic or not. The homeomorphism problem has been solved for many important classes of 3-manifolds - especially those with embedded 2-sided incompressible surfaces (cf [12], [15], [16]), which are called Haken manifolds. It is also well-known that the homeomorphism problem is easily solvable for two 3-manifolds which admit geometries in the sense of Thurston [36], [31]. Hence the recognition problem, to decide if a 3-manifold has a geometric structure, is a significant problem. The recognition problem has been solved for all geometric …

Radical Submodules And Uniform Dimension Of Modules, Patrick F. Smith Jan 2004

Radical Submodules And Uniform Dimension Of Modules, Patrick F. Smith

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We investigate the relations between a radical submodule N of a module M being a finite intersection of prime submodules of M and the factor module M/N having finite uniform dimension. It is proved that if N is a radical submodule of a module M over a ring R such that M/N has finite uniform dimension, then N is a finite intersection of prime submodules. The converse is false in general but is true if the ring R is fully left bounded left Goldie and the module M is finitely generated. It is further proved that, in general, if a …

Fuzzy \Beta-Compactness And Fuzzy \Beta-Closed Spaces, I. M. Hanafy Jan 2004

Fuzzy \Beta-Compactness And Fuzzy \Beta-Closed Spaces, I. M. Hanafy

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The concepts of \beta-compactness and \beta-closed spaces in the fuzzy setting are defined and investigated. Fuzzy filterbases are used to characterize these concepts. A comparison between these types and some different forms of compactness in fuzzy topology is established.

Rate Of Convergence Of Durrmeyer Type Baskakov-Bezier Operators For Locally Bounded Functions, Vijay Gupta

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In the present paper, we introduce the Durrmeyer variant of Baskakov-Bezier operators B_{n,\alpha} (f,x), which is the modified form of Baskakov-Beta operators. Here we obtain an estimate on the rate of convergence of B_{n,\alpha} (f,x) for functions of bounded variation in terms of Chanturiya's modulus of variation. In the end we also propose an open problem for the readers.

Coastal Training Strategy For The Ohio Lake Erie Basin, Claudette Robey, Kevin O'Brien, Kirstin S. Toth Jan 2004

Coastal Training Strategy For The Ohio Lake Erie Basin, Claudette Robey, Kevin O'Brien, Kirstin S. Toth

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

An analysis of the market for coastal resources management training in Ohio’s Lake Erie basin identified the challenges faced by coastal decision-makers and the disparities currently existing within this market. The primary challenges identified were in the quality of instruction and in the types of training provided. Disparities indicated were with coordination, equipment and logistical factors, external and internal marketing and promotional assistance, funding, personnel and staff assistance, and legislative and regulatory concerns. These disparities are indications of opportunities to establish partnerships and collaborative networks to facilitate coordinated training initiatives; to re-examine and develop course content and locations to better …

Chemistry-Induced Intrinsic Stress Variations During The Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Polycrystalline Diamond, Ashok Rajamani, Brian W. Sheldon, Sumit Nijhawan, Alan Schwartzman, Janet Rankin, Barbara L. Walden, Laura Riester Jan 2004

Chemistry-Induced Intrinsic Stress Variations During The Chemical Vapor Deposition Of Polycrystalline Diamond, Ashok Rajamani, Brian W. Sheldon, Sumit Nijhawan, Alan Schwartzman, Janet Rankin, Barbara L. Walden, Laura Riester

Faculty Scholarship

Intrinsic tensile stresses in polycrystalline films are often attributed to the coalescence of neighboring grains during the early stages of film growth, where the energy decrease associated with converting two free surfaces into a grain boundary provides the driving force for creating tensile stress. Several recent models have analyzed this energy trade off to establish relationships between the stress and the surface∕interfacial energy driving force, the elastic properties of the film, and the grain size. To investigate these predictions, experiments were conducted with diamond films produced by chemical vapor deposition. A multistep processing procedure was used to produce films with …

Design And Evaluation Of A Modified In Situ Mesocosm To Study Denitrification In The Karlsruhe Aquifer, Jason M. Warne Jan 2004

Design And Evaluation Of A Modified In Situ Mesocosm To Study Denitrification In The Karlsruhe Aquifer, Jason M. Warne

Theses and Dissertations

To simplify the in situ mesocosm (ISM) design given in Schlag (1999), a modified ISM was designed and built in which a 6-inch long sand point replaces three 16-inch diameter screens. The modified design also includes an optional submersible pump mounted on top of the ISM chamber, making it capable of applications at depths greater than those attainable using a peristaltic pump from the ground surface. Two ISMs, one the original design (0-ISM) and the other the modified design (M-ISM) with an optional submersible pump, were installed in the Karlsruhe aquifer, near Minot, ND, in late June, 2003. Tracer tests …

A Boundary Element Method For Thermo-Poroelasticity With Applications In Rock Mechanics, Qiang Zhang Jan 2004

A Boundary Element Method For Thermo-Poroelasticity With Applications In Rock Mechanics, Qiang Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Coupled thermal and poromechanical processes play an important role in many geomechanics problems, such as borehole stability analysis and studies of initiation and propagation of hydraulic fractures. Thermal effects, as well as hydraulic effects, can greatly change the stresses and pore pressure fields around an underground opening. This is due to the fact that thermal loading induces a volumetric deformation because of thermal expansion/contraction of both the pore fluid and the rock solid. Volumetric expansion can result in significant pressurization of the pore fluid. In order to take into account the influence of temperature gradients on pore pressure and stresses, …

Effects Of Education, Vaccination And Treatment On Hiv Transmission In Homosexuals With Genetic Heterogeneity, Christopher Kribs, Sara Del Valle, Arlene Morales Evangelista, Maria Cristina Velasco, Shu-Fang Hsu Schmitz

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Genetic studies report the existence of a mutant allele Δ32 of CC R5 chemokine receptor gene at high allele frequencies ( 10%) in Caucasian populations. The presence of the allele is believed to provide partial or full resistance to HIV. In this study, we look at the impact of education, temporarily effective vaccines and therapies on the dynamics of HIV in homosexually active populations. In our model, it is assumed that some individuals possess one or two mutant alleles (like Δ32 of CCR5) that prevent the successful invasion or replication of HIV. Our model therefore differentiates by genetic and epidemiological …

High-Speed Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry, Carol Armstrong Jan 2004

High-Speed Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry, Carol Armstrong

Masters

Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) is used to measure surface displacements. Phase shifting can be used to obtain a fringe pattern which depicts the phase at every point in an image. Previous studies have used algorithms such as the 4-bucket algorithm to obtain phase maps of objects. After the object is displaced a second phase map is obtained in the same way and by correlation the phase difference due to the displacement can be determined. When the object is in rapid continuous motion these algorithms cannot be used. Towards this end a 5-frame algorithm was written, in which the calibrated …

A series of substituted 2-phenacyl-3-phenyl-1H-pyrrole-4-carboxylates were prepared from substituted acetophenones in 6 steps. The final condensations between a chloroenal and an aminoketone were carried out under neutral conditions in parallel to yield the series listed below. Selected pyrrole derivatives proved to be potent hypolipidemic agents lowering serum triglyceride concentrations in CF-1 male mice after 14 days of I.P. administration. One agent orally lowered serum cholesterol in Sprague-Dawley male rats at 2mg/kg/day after 14 days. The agents demonstrated a lowering of mouse serum LDL- cholesterol levels and selected compounds showed an elevation of serum HDL-cholesterol levels. The cholesterol concentrations in the …

Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Drought affects virtually all regions of the world and results in significant economic, social, and environmental impacts. The Federal Emergency Management Agency estimates annual drought-related losses in the United States at $6-8 billion, which is more than any other natural hazard. Congress enacted the Agricultural Risk Protection Act of 2000 to encourage the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Risk Management Agency (RMA) and farmers to be more proactive in managing drought risk. Through the National Science Foundation (NSF) Digital Government program, the USDA RMA is working with the University of Nebraska−Lincoln Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department, National Drought …

Drought Monitoring Using Data Mining Techniques: A Case Study For Nebraska, Usa, Tsegaye Tadesse, Donald A. Wilhite, Sherri K. Harms, Michael J. Hayes, Steve Goddard

Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Drought has an impact on many aspects of society. To help decision makers reduce the impacts of drought, it is important to improve our understanding of the characteristics and relationships of atmospheric and oceanic parameters that cause drought. In this study, the use of data mining techniques is introduced to find associations between drought and several oceanic and climatic indices that could help users in making knowledgeable decisions about drought responses before the drought actually occurs. Data mining techniques enable users to search for hidden patterns and find association rules for target data sets such as drought episodes. These techniques …

Sedimentology And Geochemistry Of An Urban Coastal Lake System: Coombabah Lake Nature Reserve, Gold Coast, Queensland, Tracy D. Frank, Christopher R. Fielding

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

A study was initiated to address environmental concerns associated with changes in land use in the catchment area of Coombabah Lake, a brackish coastal lake system located in southeast Queensland. Sedimentological and geochemical data derived from a series of cores that penetrate the ca. 0–6000 year-old lacustrine sequence indicate that throughout much of its history, Coombabah Lake has remained a quiet, shallow, water body fed by fine-grained sediment dropped from suspension. Discrete and laterally continuous, shelly horizons form the basis for the stratigraphy developed for the lake sequence. A lithological transition in the upper 50 cm of the sediment column, …

Diatom Biostratigraphy Of The Cenozoic Glaciomarine Pagodroma Group, Northern Prince Charles Mountains, East Antarctica, Jason M. Whitehead, David M. Harwood, Barrie Mckelvey, Andrew Mcminn Jan 2004

Diatom Biostratigraphy Of The Cenozoic Glaciomarine Pagodroma Group, Northern Prince Charles Mountains, East Antarctica, Jason M. Whitehead, David M. Harwood, Barrie Mckelvey, Andrew Mcminn

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

In the northern Prince Charles Mountains glaciomarine sediments of the Pagodroma Group outcrop on Fisher Massif (Mt Johnston and Fisher Bench Formations) and at the Amery Oasis (Battye Glacier and Bardin Bluffs Formations), at locations 300 and 250 km south of the Amery Ice Shelf edge, respectively. Most of the Pagodroma Group consists of ice-proximal glaciomarine diamict, and a much subordinate (<2%) amount of more ice-distal mudstone. Microfossil biostratigraphy based upon in situ and glacially reworked diatoms constrains the ages of the four formations, and identifies at least six intervals of marine fjordal deposition. Sparse diatoms in Mt Johnston Formation diamicts indicate an Early Oligocene age. However, it is …
