How Cellular Movement Determines The Collective Force Generated By The Dictyostelium Discoideum Slug, J. C. Dallon, H. G. Othmer Nov 2004

How Cellular Movement Determines The Collective Force Generated By The Dictyostelium Discoideum Slug, J. C. Dallon, H. G. Othmer

Faculty Publications

How the collective motion of cells in a biological tissue originates in the behavior of a collection of individuals, each of which responds to the chemical and mechanical signals it receives from neighbors, is still poorly understood. Here we study this question for a particular system, the slug stage of the cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum. We investigate how cells in the interior of a migrating slug can effectively transmit stress to the substrate and thereby contribute to the overall motive force. Theoretical analysis suggests necessary conditions on the behavior of individual cells, and computational results shed light on experimental …

Average Nighttime F Region Disturbance Neutral Winds Measured By Windi Uars: Initial Results, J. T. Emmert, Bela G. Fejer, G. G. Shepard, B. H. Solheim

Bela G. Fejer

[1] We use low- and mid-latitude wind data from the Wind Imaging Interferometer (WINDII) on board the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) to study the average response of nighttime upper thermospheric winds to geomagnetic activity. We calculate perturbation winds in magnetic coordinates and analyze them as a function of magnetic local time, latitude, geomagnetic activity, and solar EUV flux. The nighttime zonal disturbance winds are predominately westward, with the strongest effects extending from dusk at 70° to midnight at 45°. Westward disturbance winds are also observed throughout most of the night at low latitudes, where they change to eastward at …

Evaluating The Use Of In Vitro Bioassays For The Ecotoxicological Assessment Of Irish Estuarine Sediments, Sharon Ni Shuilleabhain Nov 2004

Evaluating The Use Of In Vitro Bioassays For The Ecotoxicological Assessment Of Irish Estuarine Sediments, Sharon Ni Shuilleabhain

Doctoral

Sediments, as a repository for persistent anthropogenic contaminants, have the potential to cause deleterious effects in the aquatic environment. Particular attention to the quality of sediment is, therefore, warranted in the ecotoxicological risk assessment of aquatic systems. An assessment methodology combining chemical, ecotoxicological and ecological evaluations in a hierarchial test strategy, where toxicological significant and complexity increases with the tiers, is recommended for a thorough appraisal of sediment toxicity. The aim of the present study was to assess the potential of in vitro bioassays to be employed as screening tools got Tier 1 ecotoxicity evaluation of Irish estuarine sediments. Chemical …

Geodetic And Sconstraints On Some Seismogenic Zone Processes In Costa Rica, Edmundo Norabuena, Timothy H. Dixon, Susan Schwartz, Heather Deshon, Andrew Newman, Marino Protti, Victor Gonzalez, Leroy Dorman, Ernst R. Flueh, Paul Lundgren, Fred Pollitz, Dan Sampson Nov 2004

Geodetic And Sconstraints On Some Seismogenic Zone Processes In Costa Rica, Edmundo Norabuena, Timothy H. Dixon, Susan Schwartz, Heather Deshon, Andrew Newman, Marino Protti, Victor Gonzalez, Leroy Dorman, Ernst R. Flueh, Paul Lundgren, Fred Pollitz, Dan Sampson

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

New seismic and geodetic data from Costa Rica provide insight into seismogenic zone processes in Central America, where the Cocos and Caribbean plates converge. Seismic data are from combined land and ocean bottom deployments in the Nicoya peninsula in northern Costa Rica and near the Osa peninsula in southern Costa Rica. In Nicoya, inversion of GPS data suggests two locked patches centered at 14 ± 2 and 39 ± 6 km depth. Interplate microseismicity is concentrated in the more freely slipping intermediate zone, suggesting that small interseismic earthquakes may not accurately outline the updip limit of the seismogenic zone, the …

We report results from a comprehensive follow-up observing campaign of the afterglow of GRB 030226, in-cluding VLTspectroscopy, VLT polarimetry, and Chandra X-ray observations. In addition, we present BOOTES-1 wide-field observations at the time of the occurrence of the burst. First observations at ESO started 0.2 days after the event when the gamma ray burst (GRB) afterglow was at a magnitude of R $19 and continued until the afterglow had faded below the detection threshold (R > 26). No underlying host galaxy was found. The optical light curve shows a break around 0.8 days after the burst, which is achromatic within the …

Deep-Sea Image Processing, Yuri Rzhanov, Larry A. Mayer, D J. Fornari Nov 2004

Deep-Sea Image Processing, Yuri Rzhanov, Larry A. Mayer, D J. Fornari

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

High-resolution seafloor mapping often requires optical methods of sensing, to confirm interpretations made from sonar data. Optical digital imagery of seafloor sites can now provide very high resolution and also provides additional cues, such as color information for sediments, biota and divers rock types. During the cruise AT11-7 of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) vessel R/V Atlantis (February 2004, East Pacific Rise) visual imagery was acquired from three sources: (1) a digital still down-looking camera mounted on the submersible Alvin, (2) observer-operated 1-and 3-chip video cameras with tilt and pan capabilities mounted on the front of Alvin, and (3) …

Variable Bandwidth Filter For Multibeam Echo-Sounding Bottom Detection, Barbara J. Kraft, Christian De Moustier Nov 2004

Variable Bandwidth Filter For Multibeam Echo-Sounding Bottom Detection, Barbara J. Kraft, Christian De Moustier

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The accuracy of a seafloor map derived from multibeam swath bathymetry depends first and foremost on the quality of the bottom detection process that yields estimates of the arrival time and angle of bottom echoes received in each beam. Filtering of each beam with a fixed bandwidth filter, with the bandwidth based on the length of the transmitted pulse, reduces the error associated with the time-angle estimates. However, filters of this type can not be optimal over the wide range of operational environments encountered. Better results are obtained with a processing scheme that varies the filter bandwidth across the swath …

A Maximal Chain Approach For Scheduling Tasks In A Multiprocessor Systems, Sachin Pawaskar, Hesham Ali Nov 2004

A Maximal Chain Approach For Scheduling Tasks In A Multiprocessor Systems, Sachin Pawaskar, Hesham Ali

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Scheduling dependent tasks is one of the most challenging versions of the scheduling problem in parallel and distributed systems. It is known to be computationally intractable in its general form as well as several restricted cases. As a result, researchers have studied restricted forms of the problem by constraining either the task graph representing the parallel tasks or the computer model. Also, in an attempt to solve the problem in the general case, a number of heuristics have been developed. In this paper, we study the scheduling problem for a fixed number of processors m. In the proposed work, we …

Integrated Coverage And Connectivity Configuration For Energy Conservation In Sensor Networks, Guoliang Xing, Xiaorui Wang, Yuanfang Zhang, Chenyang Lu, Robert Pless, Christopher Gill Nov 2004

Integrated Coverage And Connectivity Configuration For Energy Conservation In Sensor Networks, Guoliang Xing, Xiaorui Wang, Yuanfang Zhang, Chenyang Lu, Robert Pless, Christopher Gill

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

An effective approach for energy conservation in wireless sensor networks is scheduling sleep intervals for extraneous nodes, while the remaining nodes stay active to provide continuous service. For the sensor network to operate successfully, the active nodes must maintain both sensing coverage and network connectivity. Fur-thermore, the network must be able to configure itself to any feasible degrees of coverage and connectivity in order to support different applications and environments with diverse requirements. This paper presents the design and analysis of novel protocols that can dynamically configure a network to achieve guaranteed degrees of coverage and connectivity. This work differs …

Appeal Rates And Outcomes In Tried And Nontried Cases: Further Exploration Of Anti-Plaintiff Appellate Outcomes, Theodore Eisenberg

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Federal data sets covering district court and appellate court civil cases for cases terminating in fiscal years 1988 through 2000 are analyzed. Appeals are filed in 10.9 percent of filed cases, and 21.0 percent of cases if one limits the sample to cases with a definitive judgment for plaintiff or defendant. The appeal rate is 39.6 percent in tried cases compared to 10.0 percent of nontried cases. For cases with definitive judgments, the appeal filing rate is 19.0 percent in nontried cases and 40.9 percent in tried cases. Tried cases with definitive judgments are appealed to a conclusion on the …

Spatial Queries In Wireless Broadcast Systems, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Dik Lun Lee Nov 2004

Spatial Queries In Wireless Broadcast Systems, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Dik Lun Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Owing to the advent of wireless networking and personal digital devices, information systems in the era of mobile computing are expected to be able to handle a tremendous amount of traffic and service requests from the users. Wireless data broadcast, thanks to its high scalability, is particularly suitable for meeting such a challenge. Indexing techniques have been developed for wireless data broadcast systems in order to conserve the scarce power resources in mobile clients. However, most of the previous studies do not take into account the impact of location information of users. In this paper, we address the issues of …

On Semantic Caching And Query Scheduling For Mobile Nearest-Neighbor Search, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Dik Lun Lee Nov 2004

On Semantic Caching And Query Scheduling For Mobile Nearest-Neighbor Search, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Dik Lun Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Location-based services have received increasing attention in recent years. In this paper, we address the performance issues of mobile nearest-neighbor search, in which the mobile user issues a query to retrieve stationary service objects nearest to him/her. An index based on Voronoi Diagram is used in the server to support such a search, while a semantic cache is proposed to enhance the access efficiency of the service. Cache replacement policies tailored for the proposed semantic cache are examined. Moreover, several query scheduling policies are proposed to address the inter-cell roaming issues in multi-cell environments. Simulations are conducted to evaluate the …

Two-Echelon Repairable Item Inventory System With Limited Repair Capacity Under Nonstationary Demands, Hoong Chuin Lau, Huawei Song

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We study a repairable item inventory system under limited repair capacity and nonstationary Poisson demands, motivated by corrective maintenance of military equipment. Our goal is to minimize the cost of both spare and repair resource allocation. We propose an efficient analytical model that combines optimization modeling and queuing theory.

Job Scheduling With Unfixed Availability Constraints, Hoong Chuin Lau, C. Zhang Nov 2004

Job Scheduling With Unfixed Availability Constraints, Hoong Chuin Lau, C. Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Standard scheduling theory assumes that all machines are continuously available throughout the planning horizon. In many manufacturing and service management situations however, machines need to be maintained periodically to prevent malfunctions. During the maintenance period, a machine is not available for processing jobs. Hence, a more realistic scheduling model should take into account machine maintenance activities. In this paper, we study the problem of job scheduling with unfixed availability constraints on a single machine. We first propose a preliminary classification for the scheduling problem with unfixed availability constraints based on maintenance constraints, job characteristics and objective function. We divide our …

Multivariate Stochastic Volatility Models: Bayesian Estimation And Model Comparison, Jun Yu, Renate Meyer Nov 2004

Multivariate Stochastic Volatility Models: Bayesian Estimation And Model Comparison, Jun Yu, Renate Meyer

Research Collection School Of Economics

In this paper we show that fully likelihood-based estimation and comparison of multivariate stochastic volatility (SV) models can be easily performed via a freely available Bayesian software called WinBUGS. Moreover, we introduce to the literature several new specifications which are natural extensions to certain existing models, one of which allows for time varying correlation coefficients. Ideas are illustrated by fitting, to a bivariate time series data of weekly exchange rates, nine multivariate SV models, including the specifications with Granger causality in volatility, time varying correlations, heavy-tailed error distributions, additive factor structure, and multiplicative factor structure. Empirical results suggest that the …

Two-Loop Bethe Logarithms For Higher Excited S Levels, Ulrich D. Jentschura Nov 2004

Two-Loop Bethe Logarithms For Higher Excited S Levels, Ulrich D. Jentschura

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Processes mediated by two virtual low-energy photons contribute quite significantly to the energy of hydrogenic S states. The corresponding level shift is of the order of ( α / π )2 ( Z α )6 mec2 and may be ascribed to a two-loop generalization of the Bethe logarithm. For 1 S and 2 S states, the correction has recently been evaluated by Pachucki and Jentschura [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 113005 (2003)]. Here, we generalize the approach to higher excited S states, which in contrast to the 1 S and 2 S states can decay to …

The Shallow Water Equations In Lagrangian Coordinates, J. L. Mead Nov 2004

The Shallow Water Equations In Lagrangian Coordinates, J. L. Mead

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Recent advances in the collection of Lagrangian data from the ocean and results about the well-posedness of the primitive equations have led to a renewed interest in solving flow equations in Lagrangian coordinates. We do not take the view that solving in Lagrangian coordinates equates to solving on a moving grid that can become twisted or distorted. Rather, the grid in Lagrangian coordinates represents the initial position of particles, and it does not change with time. However, using Lagrangian coordinates results in solving a highly nonlinear partial differential equation. The nonlinearity is mainly due to the Jacobian of the coordinate …

Relaxation To Native Conformation Of A Bond-Fluctuating Protein Chain With Hydrophobic And Polar Nodes, Johan Bjursell, Ras B. Pandey Nov 2004

Relaxation To Native Conformation Of A Bond-Fluctuating Protein Chain With Hydrophobic And Polar Nodes, Johan Bjursell, Ras B. Pandey

Faculty Publications

The conformation and dynamics of a protein chain with hydrophobic and polar nodes are examined by the bond-fluctuation model using Monte Carlo simulations on a cubic lattice. The minimal (nearest neighbor) interaction leads to standard (self-avoiding walk) conformation, i.e., the scaling of the radius of gyration Rg with the molecular weight N RgNγ with γ ≃ 3/5/ Specific interactions with longer range and higher strength are needed to approach the native globular conformations with γ < 3/5. Relaxation into the globular ground state shows a weak power-law decay, i.e., Rg ∝ t, α ~ 0.06-0.12.

The D-Tree: An Index Structure For Planar Point Queries Location-Based Wireless Services, Jianliang Xu, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Dik Lun Lee Nov 2004

The D-Tree: An Index Structure For Planar Point Queries Location-Based Wireless Services, Jianliang Xu, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Dik Lun Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Location-based services (LBSs), considered as a killer application in the wireless data market, provide information based on locations specified in the queries. In this paper, we examine the indexing issue for querying location-dependent data in wireless LBSs; in particular, we focus on an important class of queries, planar point queries. To address the issues of responsiveness, energy consumption, and bandwidth contention in wireless communications, an index has to minimize the search time and maintain a small storage overhead. It is shown that the traditional point-location algorithms and spatial index structures fail to achieve either objective or both. This paper proposes …

Corrective Maintenance Optimization In An Air Force, Hoong Chuin Lau, K. Y. Neo, W. C. Wan Nov 2004

Corrective Maintenance Optimization In An Air Force, Hoong Chuin Lau, K. Y. Neo, W. C. Wan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Successful military mission planning and execution depend critically on equipment serviceability and resupply. Due to the stochastic nature of demands, the forecast of optimal spares and resources needed to guarantee the level of serviceability is a complex problem, especially in a multi-echelon setting. In this paper, we propose a decision-support concept and software tool known as Corrective Maintenance Optimizer (CMO) that helps to optimize system availability, through proper allocation of spare parts, both strategically and operationally.

Logistics Network Design With Differentiated Delivery Lead Time: A Chemical Industry Case Study, Michelle Lee Fong Cheong, Rohit Bhatnagar, Stephen C. Graves Nov 2004

Logistics Network Design With Differentiated Delivery Lead Time: A Chemical Industry Case Study, Michelle Lee Fong Cheong, Rohit Bhatnagar, Stephen C. Graves

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Most logistics network design models assume exogenous customer demand that is independent of the service time or level. This paper examines the benefits of segmenting demand according to lead-time sensitivity of customers. To capture lead-time sensitivity in the network design model, we use a facility grouping method to ensure that the different demand classes are satisfied on time. In addition, we perform a series of computational experiments to develop a set of managerial insights for the network design decision making process.

Accommodating Instance Heterogeneities In Database Integration, Ee Peng Lim, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang Nov 2004

Accommodating Instance Heterogeneities In Database Integration, Ee Peng Lim, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A complete data integration solution can be viewed as an iterative process that consists of three phases, namely analysis, derivation and evolution. The entire process is similar to a software development process with the target application being the derivation rules for the integrated databases. In many cases, data integration requires several iterations of refining the local-to-global database mapping rules before a stable set of rules can be obtained. In particular, the mapping rules, as well as the data model and query model for the integrated databases have to cope with poor data quality in local databases, ongoing local database updates …

A Periodic-Review Inventory Model With Application To The Continuous-Review Obsolescence Problem, Yuyue Song, Hoong Chuin Lau Nov 2004

A Periodic-Review Inventory Model With Application To The Continuous-Review Obsolescence Problem, Yuyue Song, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper we consider a stochastic-demand periodic-review inventory model with sudden obsolescence. We characterize the structure of the optimal policy and propose a dynamic programming algorithm for computing its parameters. We then utilize this algorithm to approximate the solution to the continuous-review sudden obsolescence problem with general obsolescence distribution. We prove convergence of our approximation scheme, and demonstrate it numerically against known closed-form solutions of special cases.

Anonymous Secure Routing In Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks, Bo Zhu, Zhiguo Wan, Mohan S. Kankanhalli, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng Nov 2004

Anonymous Secure Routing In Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks, Bo Zhu, Zhiguo Wan, Mohan S. Kankanhalli, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Although there are a large number of papers on secure routing in mobile ad-hoc networks, only a few consider the anonymity issue. In this paper, we define more strict requirements on the anonymity and security properties of the routing protocol, and notice that previous research works only provide Weak Location Privacy and Route Anonymity, and are vulnerable to specific attacks. Therefore, we propose the Anonymous Secure Routing (ASR) protocol that can provide additional properties on anonymity, i.e. Identity Anonymity and Strong Location Privacy, and at the same time ensure the security of discovered routes against various passive and active attacks. …

Long-Residency Hydration, Cation Binding, And Dynamics Of Loop E/Helix Iv Rrna-L25 Protein Complex, Neocles B. Leontis, Kamila Réblová, Nad'a Špačková, Jaroslav Koča, Jiří Šponer

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Molecular dynamics simulations of RNA-protein complex between Escherichia coli loop E/helix IV (LE/HeIV) rRNA and L25 protein reveal a qualitative agreement between the experimental and simulated structures. The major groove of LE is a prominent rRNA cation-binding site. Divalent cations rigidify the LE major groove geometry whereas in the absence of divalent cations LE extensively interacts with monovalent cations via inner-shell binding. The HeIV region shows bistability of its major groove explaining the observed differences between x-ray and NMR structures. In agreement with the experiments, the simulations suggest that helix-alpha1 of L25 is the least stable part of the protein. …

Micro-Bathymetric Mapping Using Acoustic Range Images, Christopher Roman, Hanumant Singh Oct 2004

Micro-Bathymetric Mapping Using Acoustic Range Images, Christopher Roman, Hanumant Singh

Christopher N. Roman

This work focuses on the creation of high resolution micro-bathymetric maps using a high frequency pencil beam sonar. These maps typically cover areas of 10's to 100's of square meters. Data is collected using a sonar mounted to an underwater vehicle that can be positioned at discrete locations on the sea floor or flown in a survey pattern above the bottom. Specifically, we are focused on improving the accuracy of these terrain maps by merging sonar pings taken from multiple vantage points over the same location. This requires the adaption of data registration techniques to handle errors related to the …
