Technical Note: Comparative Static Analysis Of Information Value In A Canonical Decision Problem, Jeffrey Keisler Oct 2004

Technical Note: Comparative Static Analysis Of Information Value In A Canonical Decision Problem, Jeffrey Keisler

Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series

To gain insight into the behavior of the value of information, this paper identifies specific rules for a canonical decision problem: the two-act linear loss decision with normal prior probability distributions. Conditions are derived for which the expected value of perfect information increases when mean and standard deviation are both linear functions of an exogenous variable. A variety of richer decision problems can be adapted to the problem, so that the general results obtained here can be immediately applied to understand drivers of information value.

Function Of The Signal Peptide And N- And C-Terminal Propeptides In The Leucine Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica, Krzysztof P. Bzymek, Ventris M. D'Souza, Guanjing Chen, Heidi Campbell, Alice Mitchell, Richard C. Holz Oct 2004

Function Of The Signal Peptide And N- And C-Terminal Propeptides In The Leucine Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica, Krzysztof P. Bzymek, Ventris M. D'Souza, Guanjing Chen, Heidi Campbell, Alice Mitchell, Richard C. Holz

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The leucine aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (also known as Vibrio proteolyticus) (AAP) is a metalloenzyme with broad substrate specificity. The open reading frame (ORF) for AAP encodes a 54 kDa enzyme, however, the extracellular enzyme has a molecular weight of 43 kDa. This form of AAP is further processed to a mature, thermostable 32 kDa form but the exact nature of this process is unknown. Over-expression of different forms of AAP in Escherichia coli (with AAP's native leader sequence, with and without the N- and/or C-terminal propeptides, and as fusion protein) has allowed a model for the processing of …

A Search For Tev Gamma-Ray Emission From High-Peaked Flat-Spectrum Radio Quasars Using The Whipple Air Cerenkov Telescope, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al. Oct 2004

A Search For Tev Gamma-Ray Emission From High-Peaked Flat-Spectrum Radio Quasars Using The Whipple Air Cerenkov Telescope, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

Blazars have traditionally been separated into two broad categories based on their optical emission characteristics. Blazars with faint or no emission lines are referred to as BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs), and blazars with prominent, broad emission lines are commonly referred to as flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs). The spectral energy distribution of FSRQs has generally been thought of as being more akin to the low-peaked BL Lacs, which exhibit a peak in the infrared region of the spectrum, as opposed to high-peaked BL Lacs (HBLs), which exhibit a peak in UV/X-ray region of the spectrum. All blazars that are currently …

Spatiotemporal Distribution Of Marine Magnetotactic Bacteria In A Seasonally Stratified Coastal Salt Pond, S. L. Simmons, S. M. Sievert, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski, K. J. Edwards Oct 2004

Spatiotemporal Distribution Of Marine Magnetotactic Bacteria In A Seasonally Stratified Coastal Salt Pond, S. L. Simmons, S. M. Sievert, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski, K. J. Edwards

Physics

The occurrence and distribution of magnetotactic bacteria (MB) were studied as a function of the physical and chemical conditions in meromictic Salt Pond, Falmouth, Mass., throughout summer 2002. Three dominant MB morphotypes were observed to occur within the chemocline. Small microaerophilic magnetite-producing cocci were present at the top of the chemocline, while a greigite-producing packet-forming bacterium occurred at the base of the chemocline. The distributions of these groups displayed sharp changes in abundance over small length scales within the water column as well as strong seasonal fluctuations in population abundance. We identified a novel, greigite-producing rod in the sulfidic hypolimnion …

Lean Energy Analysis: Identifying, Discovering And Tracking Energy Savings Potential, J. Kelly Kissock, John Seryak Oct 2004

Lean Energy Analysis: Identifying, Discovering And Tracking Energy Savings Potential, J. Kelly Kissock, John Seryak

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Energy in manufacturing facilities is used for direct production of goods, space conditioning, and general facility support such as lighting. This paper presents a methodology, called lean energy analysis, LEA, for graphically and statistically analyzing plant energy use in terms of these major end uses.

The LEA methodology uses as few as 60 easily obtainable data points. Multivariable change-point models of electricity and natural gas use as functions of outdoor air temperature and production data are developed. The statistical models are used to subdivide plant energy use into facility, space-conditioning and production-related components.

These breakdowns suggest the savings potential from …

Optically Thick Clumps – Not The Solution To The Wolf-Rayet Wind Momentum Problem?, J. Brown, J. Cassinelli, Q. Li, A. Kholtygin, Richard Ignace

ETSU Faculty Works

The hot star wind momentum problem eta = M-upsiloninfinity/(L/c) much greater than 1 is revisited, and it is shown that the conventional belief, that it can be solved by a combination of clumping of the wind and multiple scattering of photons, is not self-consistent for optically thick clumps. Clumping does reduce the mass loss rate. M, and hence the momentum supply, required to generate a specified radio emission measure epsilon, while multiple scattering increases the delivery of momentum from a specified stellar luminosity L. However, in the case of thick clumps, when combined the two effects act in opposition rather …

One of the most exciting prospects for the LISA gravitational wave observatory is the detection of gravitational radiation from the inspiral of a compact object into a supermassive black hole. The large inspiral parameter space and low amplitude of the signal make detection of these sources computationally challenging. We outline here a first-cut data analysis scheme that assumes realistic computational resources. In the context of this scheme, we estimate the signal-to-noise ratio that a source requires to pass our thresholds and be detected. Combining this with an estimate of the population of sources in the universe, we estimate the number …

Chaos-Induced Escape Over A Potential Barrier, L. Y. Chew, Hian Ann, Christopher Ting, C. H. Lai Oct 2004

Chaos-Induced Escape Over A Potential Barrier, L. Y. Chew, Hian Ann, Christopher Ting, C. H. Lai

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We investigate the statistical parity of a class of chaos-generated noises on the escape of strongly damped particles out of a potential well. We show that statistical asymmetry in the chaotic fluctuations can lead to a skewed Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution in the well. Depending on the direction of skew, the Kramers escape rate is enhanced or suppressed accordingly. Based on the Perron–Frobenious equation, we determine an analytical expression for the escape rate’s prefactor that accounts for this effect. Furthermore, our perturbative analysis proves that in the zeroth-order limit, the rate of particle escape converges to the Kramers rate.

In the last decade and a half mathematics education literature has shown a rapid increase in books and articles that focus on the social and cultural issues related to mathematics learning and teaching. Although the social and cultural dimensions are important and relevant, the cognitive dimension of mathematical learning is equally important and received less attention. Mathematical and Analogical Reasoning of Young Learners takes us back to the very roots of learning and investigates foundational questions on the nature of …

Clip-Based Similarity Measure For Hierarchical Video Retrieval, Yuxin Peng, Chong-Wah Ngo Oct 2004

Clip-Based Similarity Measure For Hierarchical Video Retrieval, Yuxin Peng, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper proposes a new approach and algorithm for the similarity measure of video clips. The similarity is mainly based on two bipartite graph matching algorithms: maximum matching (MM) and optimal matching (OM). MM is able to rapidly filter irrelevant video clips, while OM is capable of ranking the similarity of clips according to the visual and granularity factors. Based on MM and OM, a hierarchical video retrieval framework is constructed for the approximate matching of video clips. To allow the matching between a query and a long video, an online clip segmentation algorithm is also proposed to rapidly locate …

Flexible Verification Of Mpeg-4 Stream In Peer-To-Peer Cdn, Tieyan Li, Yongdong Wu, Di Ma, Robert H. Deng Oct 2004

Flexible Verification Of Mpeg-4 Stream In Peer-To-Peer Cdn, Tieyan Li, Yongdong Wu, Di Ma, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The current packet based stream authentication schemes provide effective and efficient authentication over a group of packets transmitted on erasure channels. However, by fixing the packets in transmission, any packet manipulation will cause authentication failure. In p2p content delivery network where a proxy-in-the-middle is able to store, forward, transcode and transform the stream, previous schemes are simply unapplicable. To address the problem, we propose a flexible verification scheme that relies on special stream formats (i.e. Unequal Loss Protection ULP scheme [7]). We apply the so called Unequal Loss Verification ULV scheme into MPEG-4 framework. The encoding, packing, amortizing and verifying …

The Correlation Of Lithium And Beryllium In F And G Cluster Dwarf Stars, Ann Merchant Boesgaard, Eric Armengaud, Constantine P. Deliyannis, Alex Stephens, Jeremy R. King

Publications

Although Li has been extensively observed in main-sequence field and cluster stars, there are relatively fewer observations of Be. We have obtained Keck HIRES spectra of 36 late F and early G dwarfs in order to study the Li-Be correlation we found previously in the temperature regime of 5900–6650 K. The sample size for this temperature range with detectable and (usually) depleted Li and Be is now 88, including Li and Be abundances in both cluster and field stars. Therefore we can now investigate the influence of other parameters such as age, temperature, and metallicity on the correlation. The Be …

Growth And Magnetic Properties Of Mno₂-Δ Nanowire Microspheres, Jinbo Yang, X.-D. Zhou, Satish K. Malik, C. S. Wang, William Joseph James

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report the synthesis of MnO2-delta microspheres using hydrothermal and conventional chemical reaction methods. The microspheres of MnO2-delta consist of nanowires having a diameter of 20-50 nm and a length of 2-8 µm. The value of oxygen vacancy delta estimated from x-ray photoelectron spectrum is 0.3. The magnetization versus temperature curve indicates a magnetic transition at about 13 K. It is found that a parasitic ferromagnetic component is imposed on the antiferromagnetic structure of MnO2-delta, which might result from distortion of the lattice structure due to oxygen vacancies. The magnetic transition temperature TN is about 10 K lower than that …

Detection Of Clostridium Botulinum Type C Cells In The Gastrointestinal Tracts Of Mozambique Tilapia (Oreochromis Mossambicus) By Polymerase Chain Reaction, P. Nol, J.L. Williamson, T.E. Rocke, T.M. Yuill

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We established a method of directly detecting Clostridium botulinum type C cells, while minimizing spore detection, in the intestinal contents of Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus). This technique involved extraction of predominantly cellular DNA from tilapia intestinal tracts and used a polymerase chain reaction assay to detect presence of type C1 toxin gene. We consistently detected C. botulinum type C cells in tilapia gastrointestinal contents at a level of 7.53104 cells per 0.25 g material or 1.93103 cells. This technique is useful for determining prevalence of the potentially active organisms within a given population of fish …

Measurement Of The Tt̅ Production Cross Section In Pp̅ Collisions At √S =1.96 Tev Using Dilepton Events, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report a measurement of the tt̅ production cross section using dilepton events with jets and missing transverse energy in pp̅ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. Using a 197±12 pb-1 data sample recorded by the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab, we use two complementary techniques to select candidate events. We compare the number of observed events and selected kinematical distributions with the predictions of the standard model and find good agreement. The combined result of the two techniques yields a tt̅ production cross section of 7.0-2.1+2.4 (stat) -1.1+1.6 (syst)±0.4(lum) pb.

Inclusive Double-Pomeron Exchange At The Fermilab Tevatron P̅P Collider, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report results from a study of events with a double-Pomeron exchange topology produced in p̅p collisions at √s =1800 GeV. The events are characterized by a leading antiproton and a large rapidity gap on the outgoing proton side. We find that the differential production cross section agrees in shape with predictions based on Regge theory and factorization, and that the ratio of double-Pomeron exchange to single diffractive production rates is relatively unsuppressed as compared to the θ(10) suppression factor previously measured in single diffractive production.

Computational Approaches To The Design And Analysis Of Stability Of Polypeptide Multilayer Thin Films, Bin Zheng Oct 2004

Computational Approaches To The Design And Analysis Of Stability Of Polypeptide Multilayer Thin Films, Bin Zheng

Doctoral Dissertations

The focus of this research is the development of computational approaches to understanding the physical basis of layer-by-layer assembly (LBL), a key methodology of nanomanufacturing. The results provided detailed information on structure which cannot be obtained directly by experiments.

The model systems chosen for study are polypeptide chains. Reasons for this are that polypeptides are no less polyelectrolytes than the more usual polyions, and one can control the primary structure of a polypeptide on a residue-by-residue basis using modern synthetic methods. Moreover, as peptides constitute one of the four major classes of biological macromolecules, research in this direction is expected …

Sense -Based Text Classification By Semantic Hierarchy Representation, Xiaogang Peng Oct 2004

Sense -Based Text Classification By Semantic Hierarchy Representation, Xiaogang Peng

Doctoral Dissertations

Automatic classification of web pages is an effective way to facilitate the process of retrieving information from the Internet. Currently, two major classification methods are used in this area: keyword-based classification and sense-based classification. For keyword-based classification, keywords often have different semantic meanings, and the correct keyword matching is largely based on using exactly the same keywords. Thus, the classification results of keyword-based classification are not always satisfying. Many sense-based classification algorithms and systems have been presented, but they pay little attention to the relationship between senses. In this dissertation, we present a method to automatically classify documents based on …

Experimental Evaluation Of Wireless Simulation Assumptions, David Kotz, Calvin Newport, Robert S. Gray, Jason Liu, Yougu Yuan, Chip Elliot

Dartmouth Scholarship

All analytical and simulation research on ad hoc wireless networks must necessarily model radio propagation using simplifying assumptions. We provide a comprehensive review of six assumptions that are still part of many ad hoc network simulation studies, despite increasing awareness of the need to represent more realistic features, including hills, obstacles, link asymmetries, and unpredictable fading. We use an extensive set of measurements from a large outdoor routing experiment to demonstrate the weakness of these assumptions, and show how these assumptions cause simulation results to differ significantly from experimental results. We close with a series of recommendations for researchers, whether …

The Merciful Capital Juror, Theodore Eisenberg, Stephen P. Garvey

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

We examine the role of mercy in capital sentencing along three dimensions. We first explain why mercy is a philosophically problematic virtue, and second, why it presently holds an ambiguous status within constitutional doctrine. Finally, we draw on interviews with jurors who served on capital cases in order better to understand how the behavior of merciful jurors compares to the behavior of their less merciful counterparts. Among other things, we find that merciful jurors tend to be better educated and to attend religious services regularly. We also find that merciful jurors are, as one might reasonably expect, more apt to …
