Providing information about the risk of disease and clinical factors that may increase or decrease a patient's risk of disease is standard medical practice. Although case-control studies can provide evidence of strong associations between diseases and risk factors, clinicians need to be able to communicate to patients the age-specific risks of disease over a defined time interval for a set of risk factors.

An estimate of absolute risk cannot be determined from case-control studies because cases are generally chosen from a population whose size is not known (necessary for calculation of absolute risk) and where duration of follow-up is not …

Efficient Wait-Free Algorithms For Implementing Ll/Sc Objects, Srdjan Petrovic

Over the past decade, a pair of instructions called load-linked (LL) and store-conditional (SC) have emerged as the most suitable synchronization instructions for the design of lock-free algorithms. However, current architectures do not support these instructions; instead, they support either CAS (e.g., UltraSPARC, Itanium, Pentium) or restricted versions of LL/SC (e.g., POWER4, MIPS, Alpha). Thus, there is a gap between what algorithm designers want (namely, LL/SC) and what multiprocessors actually support (namely, CAS or restricted LL/SC). To bridge this gap, this thesis presents a series of efficient, wait-free algorithms that implement LL/SC from CAS or restricted LL/SC.

Despite their enormous potential as novel research tools and therapeutic agents, artificial transcription factors (ATFs) that up-regulate transcription robustly in vivo remain elusive. In investigating an ATF that does function exceptionally well in vivo, we uncovered an unexpected relationship between transcription function and a binding interaction between the activation domain and an adjacent region of the DNA binding domain. Disruption of this interaction leads to complete loss of function in vivo, even though the activation domain is still able to bind to its target in the transcriptional machinery. Probit-normal models have attractive properties compared to logit-normal models. In particular, they allow for easy specification of marginal links of interest while permitting a conditional random effects structure. Moreover, programming fitting algorithms for probit-normal models can be trivial with the use of well-developed algorithms for approximating multivariate normal quantiles. In typical settings, the data cannot distinguish between probit and logit conditional link functions. Therefore, if marginal interpretations are desired, the default conditional link should be the most convenient one. Dynamic dead variable analysis (DDVA) extends traditional static dead variable analysis (SDVA) in the context of model checking through the use of run-time information. The analysis is run multiple times during the course of model checking to create a more precise set of dead variables. The DDVA is evaluated based on the amount of memory used to complete model checking relative to SDVA while considering the extra overhead required to implement DDVA. On several models with a complex control flow graph, DDVA reduces the amount of memory needed by 38-88MB compared to SDVA with a cost of 36 bytes of …

Oxygen isotopic analysis of marine carbonate shells (δ18Oc) is a standard paleoceanographic technique used to document the chronology of seawater temperature change. Shell δ18Oc depends not only upon seawater temperature, but also upon the isotopic composition of the seawater (δ18Ow; related to salinity) and any species-specific fractionation that occurs during biomineralization. This award provides support to significantly enhance the elemental and isotopic analysis capabilities at the University of Maine through the acquisition of a high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (HR-ICP-MS). The HR-ICP-MS will enable environmental scientists and students at UMaine, as well as other educational institutions and state agencies, to substantially broaden their interdisciplinary research interests far beyond the current possibilities. We use mass color-marhng to track the local and regional movements of large roosts of blackbirds (Icteridae). Several marhngs have been done by National Wildlife Research Center scientists, including marhng of spring roosts in northeastern Missouri and eastern South Dakota (Knittle et al. 1987, Knittle et al. 1996, Homan et al. 2004), fall roosts in central North Dakota (Linz et al. 1991, Homan et al. 2005), and winter roosts in the southern U.S. (Harsch 1995). Here, we provide a description of the process and methodology of aerial mass color-marhng with fluorescent particles.

In the Robotics industry, it is a frequent requirement that robots operate in real-time. The usual approach to this issue involves creating robots driven entirely by direct environmental input rather than complicated planning and decision-making AI. This approach means that the current state of the robot in relation to its environment exclusively determines the actions of the robot. In the simplest terms, this approach creates a Finite State Machine (FSM). Clearly, a standard FSM is completely pre-deterministic upon its creation. Project APEX (Aircraft Particle Emissions eXperiment) was a multi-agency commercial aircraft emission characterization and technology demonstration experiment. Its objective was to characterize particle and trace gas precursor species in the emissions from a NASA DC-8 aircraft with General Electric CFM56-2C1 engines at the engine exit plane as well as selected down stream locations. This was to advance the understanding of particle emissions and their evolution in the atmosphere from a current in-service turbofan engine. The Cayley-Hamilton Theorem is an important result in the study of linear transformations over finite dimensional vector spaces. In this thesis, we show that the Cayley-Hamilton Theorem can be extended to self-adjoint trace-class operators and to closed self-adjoint operators with trace-class resolvent over a separable Hilbert space. Applications of these results include calculating operators resolvents and finding the inverse of a frame operator.

This research focused on investigating and comparing the cytotoxicity and cellular uptake of RRR-alpha-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol succinate (TPGS, with that of alpha-tocopheryl succinate (α-TS). Both TPGS and α-TS are water-soluble forms of vitamin E with important clinical applications. Cytotoxicity assays with RAW 264.7 and LNCaP cells incubated overnight with TPGS or α-TS at concentrations ≥ 12.4 μM suggest that α-TS is more cytotoxic than TPGS. Macrophages were found to be more sensitive than LNCaP cells when treated with similar concentrations of α-TS. For both cell lines, most of the TPGS or α-TS taken up remained esterified after 24 hours. Our …

The interquartile range (IQR) is used to describe the spread of a distribution. In an introductory statistics course, the IQR might be introduced as simply the “range within which the middle half of the data points lie.” In other words, it is the distance between the two quartiles, IQR = Q3 - Q1. We will compute the population IQR, the expected value, and the variance of the sample IQR for various continuous distributions. In addition, a bootstrap confidence interval for the population IQR will be evaluated.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate a company’s online H & S training program. The ABC Company’s online 8-hr HAZWOPER refresher course is based on current OSHA standard topics required for certification and principles flexible to fit site- or task-specific situations and conditions.

An 18-question survey was used to evaluate employee perceptions of online training compared to traditional classroom training. Perceptions were compared by demographic variables (e.g. gender, position, race, age and longevity with the ABC Company), which suggested that only age had an influence on employee response. The formation of the tropylium ion, C7H7+, in the mass spectrum of toluene is a chemical process that has been studied extensively in the past. The advances in computational power of personal computers have made the investigation of the pathway to form this ion and its subsequent decomposition feasible at a fairly high level of theory. The calculations that we performed were at the HF/6-31G (d, p) and the B3LYP/6-311++G (2d) levels.
