Background
Bartonella species are bacterial blood parasites of animals capable of causing disease in both animals and man. Cat-Scratch Disease (CSD) in humans is caused mainly by Bartonella henselae and is acquired from the cat, which serves as a reservoir for the bacteria. A second species, B. clarridgeiae is also implicated in the disease. Diagnosis of Bartonellosis by culture requires a week or more of incubation on enriched media containing blood, and recovery is often complicated by faster growing contaminating bacteria and fungi. Observation Of A Metallic Superfluid In A Numerical Experiment, E. Smorgrav, J. Smiseth, Egor Babaev, A. Sudbo

We report the observation, in Monte Carlo simulations, of a novel type of quantum ordered state: {\it the metallic superfluid}. The metallic superfluid features ohmic resistance to counter-flows of protons and electrons, while featuring dissipationless co-flows of electrons and protons. One of the candidates for a physical realization of this remarkable state of matter is hydrogen or its isotopes under high compression. This adds another potential candidate to the presently known quantum dissipationless states, namely superconductors, superfluid liquids and vapours, and supersolids.

In this paper, we formalize the concept of tracking in a sensor network and develop a rigorous theory of {\em trackability} that investigates the rate of growth of the number of consistent tracks given a sequence of observations made by the sensor network. The phenomenon being tracked is modelled by a nondeterministic finite automaton and the sensor network is modelled by an observer capable of detecting events related, typically ambiguously, to the states of the underlying automaton. A new concept called wireless ad-hoc control networks (WACNets), designed for distributed and remote monitoring and control is suggested in this work. Such systems represent the next stage in the evolution of distributed control and monitoring. WACNet explores a framework for organic, evolutionary and scalable method of integrating a large number of nodes with sensing and/or actuation, local intelligence and control, data processing and communication capabilities. In recent years, allergy to natural rubber latex has emerged as a major allergy among certain occupational groups and patients with underlying diseases. The sensitization and development of latex allergy has been attributed to exposure to products containing residual latex proteins. Although improved manufacturing procedures resulted in a considerable reduction of new cases, the potential risk for some patient groups is still great. In addition the prevalent cross-reactivity of latex proteins with other food allergens poses a major concern. Multi-resolution analysis has been a very popular technique in the recent years. Wavelets have been used extensively to perform multi resolution image expansion and analysis. DCT, however, has been used to compress image but not for multi resolution image analysis. This thesis is an attempt to explore the possibilities of using DCT for multi-resolution image analysis. Naive implementation of block DCT for multi-resolution expansion has many difficulties that lead to signal distortion. We present a measurement of the t[overline t] production cross section using 194 pb-1 of CDF II data using events with a high transverse momentum electron or muon, three or more jets, and missing transverse energy. The measurement assumes 100% t→Wb branching fraction. Events consistent with tt̅ decay are found by identifying jets containing heavy-flavor semileptonic decays to muons. The dominant backgrounds are evaluated directly from the data. Based on 20 candidate events and an expected background of 9.5±1.1 events, we measure a production cross section of 5.3±3.3-1.0+1.3 pb, in agreement with the standard model.

The rapid expansion of the Internet and the increasingly wide deployment of wireless networks provide opportunities to deliver streaming media content to users at anywhere, anytime. To ensure good user experience, it is important to battle adversary effects, such as delay, loss and jitter. In this thesis, we first study efficient loss recovery schemes, which require pure XOR operations. In particular, we propose a novel scheme capable of recovering up to 3 packet losses, and it has the lowest complexity among all known schemes. Genetic factors have been shown to be involved in etiology of a poor response to the antidepressant treatment with sufficient dosage and duration. Our goal was to identify the role of polymorphisms in the poor response to the treatment. To this end, 5 functional polymorphisms in 109 patients diagnosed with unipolar, major depressive disorder are analyzed. Due to the small sample size, exact conditional tests are utilized to analyze the contingency table. Simultaneously testing multiple hypotheses is important in high-dimensional biological studies. In these situations, one is often interested in controlling the Type-I error rate, such as the proportion of false positives to total rejections (TPPFP) at a specific level, alpha. This article will present an application of the E-Bayes/Bootstrap TPPFP procedure, presented in van der Laan et al. (2005), which controls the tail probability of the proportion of false positives (TPPFP), on two biological datasets. ScoreSVG implements a three-tiered software architecture that generates musical scores in scalable vector graphics (SVG), something no other known music editor has done. SVG is non-proprietary XML-based format that renders graphical content into a web browser equipped with a SVG plugin. Scores in SVG can be scripted to produce interactive music theory examples, or make other graphical score changes impossible in any other format. Large music score editors such as Finale and Sibelius output to proprietary file formats, or Postscript (.ps) files that are not interchangeable or modifiable once created. Computer models have become useful research tools in many disciplines. In many cases a researcher has access to data from a computer simulator and from a physical system. This research discusses Bayesian models that allow for the estimation of the discrepancy between the two data sources. We fit two models to data in the field of electrical engineering. Using this data we illustrate ways of modeling both a deterministic and a stochastic simulator when specific parametric assumptions can be made about the discrepancy term.

Blazars exhibit the most extreme variability of the class of objects known asactive galactic nuclei (AGN). They are characterized by a featureless continuum, high polarization, and variability at all wavelengths and timescales. The amplitude of optical variations can range from less than 0.1 magnitude on the timescale of minutes to hours, to greater than 5.0 magnitudes on timescales of months to years, and gamma-ray variability amplitudes can span a range of as much as three orders of magnitude in a time-scale as short as a few days. These characteristics are consistent with a supermassive black hole accreting matter at the …

I developed a spectrum synthesis method to investigate the physical properties of hot OB main sequence (MS) stars, which are often rapid rotators. The code realistically simulates the surface conditions of rapidly rotating stars, considering the rotationally-deformed stellar shape and gravity darkening effect. Comparing the synthesized absorption line profiles with the observed spectra of the member stars of 19 young Galactic clusters, I determined the projected rotational velocities of 496 stars. The average surface temperature and gravity for most of these objects were then derived from H$\gamma$ line fits. The polar gravity of each star was estimated as a good …

New Correlation Effects In Nonrelativistic Atomic Photoionization In The High Energy Limit, Chieh Jen Yang

The effect of initial state correlation on high-energy dipole photoionization is considered and it is shown that for almost all atomic electron the asymptotic high-energy dependence is E-7/2, and the dominant transition is an ionization plus excitation satellite transition. This is demonstrated in numerical calculations of the photoionization of Ge4p2 1S and Sn 5p2 1S.

We review the most important experimental results from the first three years of nucleus–nucleus collision studies at RHIC, with emphasis on results from the STAR experiment, and we assess their interpretation and comparison to theory. The theory-experiment comparison suggests that central Au + Au collisions at RHIC produce dense, rapidly thermalizing matter characterized by: (1) initial energy densities above the critical values predicted by lattice QCD for establishment of a quark–gluon plasma (QGP); (2) nearly ideal fluid flow, marked by constituent interactions of very short mean free path, established most probably at a stage preceding hadron formation; and (3) opacity …

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [Co(C12H8N2)3](I3)2, contains one [Co(1,10-phenanthroline)3]2+ cation, half each of two centrosymmetric triiodide anions, and one complete triiodide anion. The title compound was synthesized solvothermally from Co(NO3)2, 1,10-phenanthroline, and SnI2, where the SnI2 reagent serves only as a source of I atoms.

We present a cross-validated bagging scheme in the context of partitioning algorithms. To explore the benefits of the various bagging scheme, we compare via simulations the predictive ability of single Classification and Regression (CART) Tree with several previously suggested bagging schemes and with our proposed approach. Additionally, a variable importance measure is explained and illustrated.

What we previously thought of as insurmountable physical and chemical barriers to life, we now see as yet another niche harbouring Fextremophiles_. Extremophiles and their macromolecules had to develop molecular mechanisms of adaptation to extreme physico–chemical conditions. Using neutron spectroscopy, we have demonstrated that molecular dynamics represents one of these molecular mechanisms of adaptation. To which extent do hyper-saline conditions and extreme temperatures influence molecular dynamics? First, molecular dynamics were analysed for halophilic malate dehydrogenase from Haloarcula marismortui (Hm MalDH) under different molar solvent salt concentration conditions influencing its stability. Multiplicity And Pseudorapidity Distributions Of Photons In Au+Au Collisions At √SNn=62.4 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez

We present the first measurement of pseudorapidity distribution of photons in the region 2.3≤η≤3.7for different centralities in Au+Au collisions at √sNN=62.4 GeV. We find that the photon yield scales with the number of participating nucleons at all collision centralities studied. The pseudorapidity distribution of photons, dominated by π0 decays, has been compared to those of charged pions, photons, and inclusive charged particles from heavy-ion and nucleon-nucleon collisions at various energies. The photon production has been shown to be consistent with the energy and centrality independent limiting fragmentation scenario.

The UMaine Continuous ice core Melter (UMCoM) system is a modified Wagenbach-style continuous melter system (Rothlisberger et al., 2000) with three important differences. First, we have constructed the melthead as two separate pieces, a base and a melter plate, so that it can be easily dismantled and cleaned between melting sessions. Second, the melter plate in contact with the ice is composed of pure nickel (>99.9% Ni) so that trace element measurements can be made from the meltwater stream. Solute transport controls vegetation and water chemistry gradients in peatlands. Dispersive mixing and advective transport in peat will be measured in laboratory column experiments and in a natural gradient tracer test in a peatland to determine the relative importance of these processes. We will assess the retardation of solutes by matrix diffusion and the applicability of a dual-domain model. Electrical geophysical methods, verified through direct measurements, will be used to track tracer migration.
An extensive geophysical and hydrogeologic characterization of the peatland will map variability in peat depth across the basin and identify stratigraphy. Ground-penetrating radar and resistivity/induced polarization imaging …

Recent research in task transfer and task clustering has necessitated the need for task similarity measures in reinforcement learning. Determining task similarity is necessary for selective transfer where only information from relevant tasks and portions of a task are transferred. Which task similarity measure to use is not immediately obvious. It can be shown that no single task similarity measure is uniformly superior. The optimal task similarity measure is dependent upon the task transfer method being employed. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) adopted the Interstate Fishery Management Plan (hereafter referred to as FMP) for the American eel in November 4 1999. The FMP focuses on increasing coastal states’ efforts to collect American eel data through both fishery dependent and fishery independent studies. Consequently, member jurisdictions (including Virginia) agreed to implement an annual survey for young of year (YOY) American eels. Nomenclature for the Upper Triassic and Lower Jurassic strata along the south flank of the Uinta Mountains has been somewhat confusing because of the position of the study area between southern Wyoming, where one set of names is used, and central/southern Utah where a different set of formation names is used. The Nugget Sandstone or Glen Canyon Sandstone of the eastern Uinta Mountains overlies the Upper Triassic Popo Agie or Chinle Formation. Marine toads are well adapted for living in urban areas and are quite common in suburban areas over their introduced range in Florida. They can frequently be seen hopping along sidewalks or resting near suburban canals (Wright and Wright, 1949; Krakauer, 1968; Ashton and Ashton, 1988). They are active mostly at night.
