Search For Scalar Leptoquark Pairs Decaying To Νν̅ Qq̅ In Pp̅ Collisions At √S=1.96 Tev, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report on a search for the pair production of scalar leptoquarks (LQ), using 191 pb-1 of proton-antiproton collision data recorded by the CDF experiment during Run II of the Tevatron. The leptoquarks are sought via their decay into a neutrino and quark yielding missing transverse energy and several jets of large transverse energy. No evidence for LQ production is observed, and limits are set on sigma(pp̅→LQ L̅Q̅X→ νν̅qq̅X). Using a next-to-leading order theoretical prediction of the cross section for LQ production, we exclude first-generation LQ in the mass interval 78 to 117 GeV/c2 …

An Empirical Process Limit Theorem For Sparsely Correlated Data, Thomas Lumley

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

We consider data that are dependent, but where most small sets of observations are independent. By extending Bernstein's inequality we prove a strong law of law numbers and an empirical process central limit theorem under bracketing entropy conditions.

Web services have primarily been designed for providing inter-operability between business applications. Current technologies assume a large amount of human interaction, for integrating two applications. This is primarily due to the fact that business process integration requires understanding of data and functions of the involved entities. Semantic Web technologies, powered by description logic based languages like OWL[1], aim to add greater meaning to Web content, by annotating the data with ontologies. Ontologies provide a mechanism of providing shared conceptualizations of domains. This allows agents to get an understanding of users’ Web content and greatly reduces human interaction for meaningful Web …

Evaluation Of Optimized Variable Area Transect Sampling Using Totally Enumerated Field Data Sets, Richard M. Engeman, Ryan M. Nielson, Robert T. Sugihara Jun 2005

Evaluation Of Optimized Variable Area Transect Sampling Using Totally Enumerated Field Data Sets, Richard M. Engeman, Ryan M. Nielson, Robert T. Sugihara

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Plotless density estimators (PDEs) can be efficient alternatives to quadrat sampling for estimating the density of stationary objects. Variable area transect (VAT) sampling had been identified, and optimized relative to effort, in previous Monte Carlo simulated population studies as a low-labor field method that demonstrated superior estimation properties among many PDEs considered. However, natural populations tend to be much more complex and less predictable in spatial distribution than computer generated populations. Therefore, we carried out a Monte Carlo simulation study that used 17 fully enumerated field populations rather than simulated populations. These natural populations represented a variety of population densities …

Pion, Kaon, Proton And Anti-Proton Transverse Momentum Distributions From P+P And D+Au Collisions At √SNn=200 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez

Physics

Identified mid-rapidity particle spectra of π±, K±, and p(p¯) from 200 GeV p+p and d+Au collisions are reported. A time-of-flight detector based on multi-gap resistive plate chamber technology is used for particle identification. The particle-species dependence of the Cronin effect is observed to be significantly smaller than that at lower energies. The ratio of the nuclear modification factor (Rd Au) between protons (p+p¯) and charged hadrons (h) in the transverse momentum range 1.2

The Colorado River is approaching a crossroads. For the first time in its history, satisfying water demands in one state may require curtailing legally-recognized uses in another. This is not the first instance of water shortages in the region, and conflict among the seven Colorado River states is certainly not new. But the potential shortages on …

Xtagger: A New Approach To Authoring Document-Centric Xml, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar Jun 2005

Xtagger: A New Approach To Authoring Document-Centric Xml, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The process of authoring document-centric XML documents in humanities disciplines is very different from the approach espoused by the standard XML editing software with the data-centric view of XML. Where data-centric XML is generated by first describing a tree structure of the encoding and then providing the content for the leaf elements, document-centric encodings start with content which is then marked up. In the paper we describe our approach to authoring document-centric XML documents and the tool, xTagger, originally developed for this purpose within the Electronic Boethius project, otherwise enhanced within the ARCHway project, an interdisciplinary project devoted to development …

Pixel Entanglement: Experimental Realization Of Optically Entangled D=3 And D=6 Qudits, Malcolm N. O'Sullivan, Irfan Ali Khan, Robert W. Boyd, John C. Howell Jun 2005

Pixel Entanglement: Experimental Realization Of Optically Entangled D=3 And D=6 Qudits, Malcolm N. O'Sullivan, Irfan Ali Khan, Robert W. Boyd, John C. Howell

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We demonstrate a simple experimental method for creating entangled qudits. Using transverse-momentum and position entanglement of photons emitted in spontaneous parametric down-conversion, we show entanglement between discrete regions of space, i.e., pixels. We map each photon onto as many as six pixels, where each pixel represents one level of our qudit state. The method is easily generalizable to create even higher dimensional, entangled states. Thus, the realization of quantum information processing in arbitrarily high dimensions is possible, allowing for greatly increased information capacity.

K(892)* Resonance Production In Au+Au And P+P Collisions At √SNn = 200 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez

Physics

The short-lived K(892) resonance provides an efficient tool to probe properties of the hot and dense medium produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We report measurements of K in √sNN=200GeV Au+Au and p+p collisions reconstructed via its hadronic decay channels K(892)*0→Kπ and K(892)*±→K0Sπ± using the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The K*0 mass has been studied as a function of pT in minimum bias p+p and central Au+Au collisions. The K∗pT spectra for minimum bias p+pinteractions and for Au+Au collisions in different centralities are presented. The K∗/K yield ratios for all …
