The 2005 Quequechan River Project has a couple of interesting subplots: The fecal coliform bacteria data, the increasing phosphorus levels, the leaf decomposition project, and the sewer overflow diversion project.

  1. We had no bacteria growth for the samples we collected this year. That could be a good thing resulting from the tunnel project diverting sewer overflow waters or it could just be because we had no rain before we sampled.
  2. Our biotic index indicated a severely impacted river (7.0). We collected mostly scuds from our site below the bridge. However, when we went with Olyssa Starry from the Urban Environmental …

The Indian Head River is a tributary of the North River which is part of the South Coastal Basin. The Drinkwater becomes the Indian Head River below Factory Pond on the Hanson/Hanover line. Upstream there are a number of businesses but from Factory Pond downstream, much of the river has a forested riparian zone. The Indian Head River flows through the towns of Hanson, Hanover, and Pembroke. Between the two study sites there is some white water including several small waterfalls.

This is the fourth year that Whitman-Hanson Regional Schools have investigated the Indian Head River. The High School studied …

Three probabilistic models were developed for characterizing the risk of mortality and sub-acute coagulopathy to Poouli, an endangered non-target avian species, in broadcast diphacinone-baited areas on Hawaii, USA. For single-day exposure, the risk of Poouli mortality approaches 0. For 5-d exposure, the mean probability of mortality increased to 3% for adult and 8% for juvenile Poouli populations. For Poouli that consume snails containing diphacinone residues for 14 d, the model predicted increased levels of coagulopathy for 0.42 and 11% of adult and juvenile Poouli populations, respectively. We report the first largely model independent measurement of charged particle multiplicities in quark and gluon jets, Nq and Ng, produced at the Fermilab Tevatron in pp̅ collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV and recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The measurements are made for jets with average energies of 41 and 53 GeV by counting charged particle tracks in cones with opening angles of θ c=0.28, 0.36, and 0.47 rad around the jet axis. We present first measurements of the pseudorapidity and azimuth (η, ϕ) binsize dependence of event-wise mean transverse-momentum ⟨pt⟩ fluctuations for Au–Au collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV. We invert that dependence to obtain pt autocorrelations on differences (η, ϕ) interpreted to represent velocity/temperature distributions on (η, ϕ). The general form of the autocorrelations suggests that the basic correlation mechanism is parton fragmentation. The autocorrelations vary rapidly with collision centrality, which suggests that fragmentation is strongly modified by a dissipative medium in the more central Au–Au collisions relative to peripheral or p–p collisions.

As multiple types of traffic converge onto one network (frequently wireless), enterprises face a tradeoff between effectiveness and security. Some types of traffic, such as voice-over-IP (VoIP), require certain quality of service (QoS) guarantees to be effective. The end client platform is in the best position to know which packets deserve this special handling. In many environments (such as universities), end users relish having control over their own machines. We have measured the azimuthal angular correlation of b[overline b] production, using 86.5 pb-1 of data collected by Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) in pp̅ collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV during 1994–1995. In high-energy pp̅ collisions, such as at the Tevatron, bb̅ production can be schematically categorized into three mechanisms. The leading-order (LO) process is "flavor creation," where both bb and quarks substantially participate in the hard scattering and result in a distinct back-to-back signal in final state. A new class of photoactive chiral liquid crystals based on a photoactive nematic host material and a photoinactive chiral dopant was utilized to investigate the behavior of the blues phases when trans-cis isomerization is induced. While the general behavior follows what has been observed in the cholesteric phase, the sensitivity of the blue phases to external parameters causes different behavior when these systems are exposed to UV radiation. This work investigates the guest-host chemistry in water of p-sulfonatocalix[6]arene and a number of guests related to the amino acids arginine and lysine. Two questions are particularly important: what are the interactions that drive guest-host binding and what is the role of the solvent. The answers to these questions are investigated with isothermal titration calorimetry (lTC), which gives K, ?H, and ?S, and pressure perturbation calorimetry (PPC), which allows the calculation of the thermal coefficient of expansion ? and relating it to a molecule's structure-breaking or structure-making properties. Exchange coupling between a magnetoelectric (111)-oriented Cr2O3 single crystal and a CoPt multilayer with perpendicular anisotropy exhibits an exchange bias field proportional to the applied axial electric field. Extrapolation from bulk to thin film magnetoelectric pinning system suggests promising spintronic applications due to coupling between the electric field-controlled magnetization and the magnetization of a neighbor ferromagnetic layer. Pure voltage control of magnetic configurations of tunneling magnetoresistance spin valves is an attractive alternative to current-induced magnetization switching. ©2005 American Institute of Physics

Lowest-order nondipole effects are studied systematically in double photoionization (DPI) of the He atom. Ab initio parametrizations of the quadrupole transition amplitude for DPI from the 1S0 state are presented in terms of the exact two-electron radial matrix elements. Analytic expressions for these matrix elements within lowest-order perturbation theory (LOPT) in the interelectron interaction are also given. The corresponding parametrizations for the dipole-quadrupole triply differential cross section (TDCS) are presented for the case of an elliptically polarized photon. A general analysis of retardation-induced asymmetries of the TDCS including the circular dichroism effect at equal energy sharing is presented. Numerical LOPT …

Although organic adsorbates and thin films are generally regarded as "soft" materials, the effective Debye temperature, indicative of the dynamic motion of lattice normal to the surface, can be very high. For biphenyldimethyldithiol, the effective Debye temperature, determined from core level photoemission from the all carbon arene rings, is comparable to that of graphite. We associate this rigidity to the stiffness of the benzene rings, and the ordering in the molecular thin film. Measurements on the sulfur of poly(hexylthiophene) show that sulfur in an arene ring is less dominated by soft modes than the pendant sulfur of biphenyldimethyldithiol on the …

We report nonlocal spin injection and detection experiments on mesoscopic Co-Al2O3-Cu spin valves. We have observed a temperature-dependent asymmetry in the nonlocal resistance between parallel and antiparallel configurations of the magnetic injector and detector. This strongly supports the existence of a nonequilibrium resistance that depends on the relative orientation of the detector magnetization and the nonequilibrium magnetization in the normal metal providing evidence for increasing interface spin scattering with temperature.

Deep inelastic scattering and its diffractive component, ep → e′ γ* p → e′ X N, have been studied at HERA with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 4.2 pb-1. The measurement covers a wide range in the γ* p c.m. energy W (37-245 GeV), photon virtuality Q2 (2.2-80 GeV2) and mass MX (0.28-35 GeV). The diffractive cross section for MX > 2 GeV rises strongly with W; the rise is steeper with increasing Q2. The latter observation excludes the description of diffractive deep inelastic scattering in terms of the exchange of a single pomeron. The ratio of diffractive …

This dissertation presents work that examines the use of polystyrene-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) diblock copolymer thin films as nanoporous templates. Diblock copolymer thin films are able to microphase separate to produce microdomains on the nanometer length scale. Cylindrical domains can be perpendicularly oriented when cast as a thin film on a neutral surface. From the perpendicularly oriented cylindrical microdomains, nanoporous templates can be created.

The observation of anomalous diffusion rates on surfaces by recent experiments has renewed interest in diffusion mechanics. In order to provide a better understanding of the atomistic motions resulting in anomalous diffusion, we have investigated the diffusion dynamics of sodium on a copper surface using conservative molecular dynamics. The properties of diffusing adatoms transitioning between normal diffusive motion and anomalous motion have then been examined. Utilizing short time approximation Lyapunov exponents, stable cantori within chaotic manifolds are identified. Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods are a class of powerful computer simulation techniques for solving the many-body Schrӧdinger equation. These techniques deliver essentially exact results and boast favorable computational scaling with system size. Calculations provide a full quantum mechanical treatment and may be carried to arbitrary precision. These characteristics make QMC a promising choice for the investigation of doped helium clusters, where quantum effects are substantial.

This dissertation describes syntheses, characterization, and reactivities of Groups 4 and 5 metal amide silyl complexes free of anionic π-ligands such as cyclopentadienyl (Cp).

A summary of the research in this dissertation is provided in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 reports unusual equilibria involving zirconium amides, silyl anions, and zirconium silyl complexes through amide-silyl ligand exchange reactions. Silyl anion SiButPh2− (2) was found to substitute an amide ligand in Zr(NMe2)4 (3) to give (Me2N)3Zr(SiButPh2)2− (1a) and Zr(NMe2)5− (1b) in THF. These newly discovered reactions include the rhodium-catalyzed direct cross-coupling of allylic alcohols with aryl- and vinylboronic acids; palladium-catalyzed coupling reaction of Baylis-Hillman acetate adducts with both potassium organotrifluoroborate reagents and organosiloxanes; efficient syntheses of functionalized allylmetals such as allylboranes, allylsilanes, and allylgermanes; application of allylboranes to the synthesis of homoallylic alcohols; syntheses of 4-(1-alkynyl)-2(5H)-furanones and coumarins; utilization of potassium alkynyltrifluoroborates in the synthesis of conjugated enediynes; and application of potassium alkynyltrifluoroborates as reagents in the Petasis reaction.

We present comprehensive neutron scattering studies on the electron-doped superconductors Nd2-xCexCuO4 and Pr1-xLaCexCuO4 to understand how magnetic properties and phonon are related to superconductivity. For the superconducting Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4, a c-axis magnetic field enhances the commensurate antiferromagnetic order, while an ab-plane magnetic field induces spin-flop transition from the noncollinear to the collinear magnetic structure. The c-axis field-induced effect is absent in both the parent Nd2CuO4 and the as-grown nonsuperconducting Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4 samples. These results, combined …

Established by relatively few communities in the 1970s as a method of funding flood control measures, stormwater utilities now exist in over 400 municipalities and counties throughout the United States. During the next 10 years, their numbers are expected to swell dramatically – by one estimate to over 2,000 by the year 2014.

Experimental precision deep tillage was applied at three sites in central Kentucky with relatively well-drained silt loam soils in no-till crop production. Fields were divided into 0.4 ha (1 ac) grid cells using DGPS mapping. Assessment of soil compaction by machinery traffic was made using multiple soil cone penetrometer measurements and expressed as cone index (CI). Corn, wheat, and soybean yields were depressed in grid cells with CIavg ≥ 1.5 MPa (218 psi) prior to application of tillage treatments at sites 1 and 3, whereas at site 2, where most of the highest average CI values ranged from 1.44 …

We present data on student performance on conceptual understanding and on quantitative problem-solving ability in introductory mechanics in both studio and traditional classroom modes. The conceptual measures used were the Force Concept Inventory and the Force and Motion Conceptual Evaluation. Quantitative problem-solving ability was measured with standard questions on the final exam. Our data compare three different quarters over the course of 2 years. In all three quarters, the normalized learning gain in conceptual understanding was significantly larger for students in the studio sections. At the same time, students in the studio sections performed the same or slightly worse on …
