Use Of Tracers And Isotopes To Evaluate Vulnerability Of Water In Domestic Wells To Septic Waste, Ingrid M. Verstraeten, Gregory S. Fetterman, Michael T. Meyer, Thomas D. Bullen, Sonja Sebree

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

In Nebraska, a large number (>200) of shallow sand-point and cased wells completed in coarse alluvial sediments along rivers and lakes still are used to obtain drinking water for human consumption, even though construction of sand-point wells for consumptive uses has been banned since 1987. The quality of water from shallow domestic wells potentially vulnerable to seepage from septic systems was evaluated by analyzing for the presence of tracers and multiple isotopes. Samples were collected from 26 sand-point and perforated, cased domestic wells and were analyzed for bacteria, coliphages, nitrogen species, nitrogen and boron isotopes, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), …

Producing Pulses In The Northern Agricultural Region, Peter White, Martin Harries, Mark Seymour, Pam Burgess Apr 2005

Producing Pulses In The Northern Agricultural Region, Peter White, Martin Harries, Mark Seymour, Pam Burgess

Bulletins 4000 -

Pulses, like most other temperate crops, are ideally suited to environments with mild temperatures, adequate rainfall and free draining soils that have a deep uniform profile, a medium to fine texture and slightly acid to neutral pH (6.5-7.5). Pulses when grown on these soils and in these environments produce reliable yields, are relatively easy to manage and achieve good returns on investment.

Pulses can be grown very successfully in less ideal situations, but must then be managed carefully to ensure reliable yields. The different pulse species, and even different varieties of the same species, vary in how tolerant they are …

Power Quality (Pq) Survey Reporting: Discrete Disturbance Limits, H. M. Herath, V. J. Gosbell, S. Perera Apr 2005

Power Quality (Pq) Survey Reporting: Discrete Disturbance Limits, H. M. Herath, V. J. Gosbell, S. Perera

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

iscrete or event type power quality (PQ) disturbances mainly include voltage sags, swells, and the transients. An extensive literature survey suggests that there is no generally accepted method for characterization of these disturbances and suitable limits are not yet found in any international standard. One of the reasons for the lack of characterization methods is the difficulty of defining suitable site indices for each discrete disturbance type. In this paper existing characterization methods are reviewed and discussed. A new generalized approach is then given to show a better way of characterizing voltage sags, swells and transients. This is followed by …

In this paper, possible spin transformation and Co valence in dilute magnetic semiconductors is studied. Polycrystalline samples of Zn/sub 1-x/Co/sub x/O (0.05/spl les/x/spl les/0.17) and Zn/sub 1-z/Mg/sub z/Co/sub 0.15/O are prepared by rapid oxalate decomposition technique. X-ray diffraction is used to determine phase purity of the samples. Co valence state 2+ is determined by X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) using synchrotron irradiation. Magnetic properties measured show that all samples are paramagnetic and magnetization hysteresis measurement indicated that there is no trace of ferromagnetism. From Curie-Weiss fittings at high temperature region, the effective magnetic moment (/spl mu//sub eff/) is 3.87/spl …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Mercury Vapor Coordination Species Using 1,3-Benzenedioethanethiolate (Bdet), Elizabeth Zuchek, Harvest L. Collier Apr 2005

Synthesis And Characterization Of Mercury Vapor Coordination Species Using 1,3-Benzenedioethanethiolate (Bdet), Elizabeth Zuchek, Harvest L. Collier

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Mercury is a major pollutant in the air today. Some possible chelators that have been used are British anti-Lewisite (BAL) 2,3-dimercaptopropanol, dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA). diinercaptopropanesulfonic acid (DMPS). and 1,3-benzenediamidoethanethiolate (BDE'I1. All contain two thiol groups, which 'capture' the heavy mercury element. Due to their structure, they all differ in how well they bind to the mercury atom. BDET is the most recent and efficient chelate used. Statistics show that coal-fired power plants are the nation's largest mercury polluter. Steps have been taken to lower the emission of this toxic metal by the Clean Air Act. However, recently The Bush Administration's …

Obstruction Sets For Classes Of Cubic Graphs, Joshua Hughes Apr 2005

Obstruction Sets For Classes Of Cubic Graphs, Joshua Hughes

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation establishes two theorems which characterize the set of minimal obstructions for two classes of graphs. A minimal obstruction for a class of graphs is a graph that is not in the class but every graph that it properly contains, under some containment relation, is in the class. In Chapter 2, we provide a characterization of the class of cubic outer-planar graphs in terms of its minimal obstructions which are also called cubic obstructions in this setting. To do this, we first show that all the obstructions containing loops can be obtained from the complete set of loopless obstructions …

Developing A B -Tagging Algorithm Using Soft Muons At Level-3 For The Dø Detector At Fermilab, Mayukh Das Apr 2005

Developing A B -Tagging Algorithm Using Soft Muons At Level-3 For The Dø Detector At Fermilab, Mayukh Das

Doctoral Dissertations

The current data-taking phase of the DØ detector at Fermilab, called Run II, is designed to aid the search for the Higgs Boson. The neutral Higgs is postulated to have a mass of 117 GeV. One of the channels promising the presence of this hypothetical particle is through the decay of b-quark into a muon. The process of identifying a b-quark in a jet using muon as a reference is b-tagging with a muon tag.

At the current data taking and analysis rate, it will take long to reach the process of identifying valid events. The triggering mechanism of the …

Nonparametric Estimation Of The Case Fatality Ratio With Competing Risks Data: An Application To Severe Acute Respiratory Syndome (Sars) , Nicholas P. Jewell, Xiudong Lei, A. C. Ghani, C. A. Donnelly, G. M. Leung, L. M. Ho, B. Cowling, A. J. Hedley

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

For diseases with some level of associated mortality, the case fatality ratio measures the proportion of diseased individuals who die from the disease. In principle, it is straightforward to estimate this quantity from individual follow-up data that provides times from onset to death or recovery. In particular, in a competing risks context, the case fatality ratio is defined by the limiting value of the sub-distribution function, associated with death, at infinity. When censoring is present, however, estimation of this quantity is complicated by the possibility of little information in the right tail of of the sub-distribution function, requiring use of …

Hierarchical Kohonenen Net For Anomaly Detection In Network Security, Suseela T. Sarasamma, Qiuming Zhu, Julie Huff Apr 2005

Hierarchical Kohonenen Net For Anomaly Detection In Network Security, Suseela T. Sarasamma, Qiuming Zhu, Julie Huff

Computer Science Faculty Publications

A novel multilevel hierarchicalKohonen Net (K-Map) for an intrusion detection system is presented. Each level of the hierarchical map is modeled as a simple winner-take-all K-Map. One significant advantage of this multilevel hierarchical K-Map is its computational efficiency. Unlike other statistical anomaly detection methods such as nearest neighbor approach, K-means clustering or probabilistic analysis that employ distance computation in the feature space to identify the outliers, our approach does not involve costly point-to-point computation in organizing the data into clusters. Another advantage is the reduced network size. We use the classification capability of the K-Map on selected dimensions of data …

26Al-Containing Acidic And Basic Sodium Aluminum Phosphate Preparation And Use In Studies Of Oral Aluminum Bioavailability From Foods Utilizing 26Al As An Aluminum Tracer, Robert A. Yokel, Aaron A. Urbas, Robert A. Lodder, John P. Selegue, Rebecca L. Florence

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

We synthesized 26Al-containing acidic and basic (alkaline) sodium aluminum phosphates (SALPs) which are FDA-approved leavening and emulsifying agents, respectively, and used them to determine the oral bioavailability of aluminum incorporated in selected foods. We selected applicable methods from published syntheses (patents) and scaled them down (∼3000- and 850-fold) to prepare ∼300–400 mg of each SALP. The 26Al was incorporated at the beginning of the syntheses to maximize 26Al and 27Al equilibration and incorporate the 26Al in the naturally-occurring Al-containing chemical species of the products. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) were used …

An Investigation Of The Interlobate Area West Of Three Rivers, Michigan And Its Relationship To The Late Wisconsinan Glaciation Of Southwest Michigan, Scott J. Kendzierski Apr 2005

An Investigation Of The Interlobate Area West Of Three Rivers, Michigan And Its Relationship To The Late Wisconsinan Glaciation Of Southwest Michigan, Scott J. Kendzierski

Masters Theses

A detailed investigation of selected mineralogical and textural characteristics of glacial deposits was conducted in order to explore the complex relationships between the Lake Michigan and Saginaw Lobe ice-margins and associated depositional regimes during the deglaciation of southwest Michigan. Various analytical methodologies were applied to the characterization of glacial materials, glacial and post-glacial environments in order to infer a chronology of lobate activity.

The Sturgis Moraine, located in St. Joseph County, Michigan, is a major recessional moraine owing to the processes of both the Lake Michigan and Saginaw Lobes. Analysis of geologic materials and examination of subsurface data along with …

Glacial Stratigraphy And Surficial Geology Of The Decatur, Lawrence, And Paw Paw U.S.G.S.7.5 Minute Quadrangles In Van Buren County, Michigan, Brian Bird

Masters Theses

The modern day landscape of Van Buren County Michigan was created by the advance and retreat of glaciers from about 13,000 to 20,000 years ago. The Lake Michigan Lobe of the Laurentide Ice Sheet sculpted southwest Michigan most recently. The sediments deposited by the glacier include diamicton, outwash sediments, and lacustrine deposits. The build up of sediment by the glaciers led to the construction of particular features such as moraines, till plains, and outwash fans. The huge amount of meltwater from the glaciers led to the erosion of channels throughout the area. In the area of this investigation the Ganges …

Synthetic And Structural Studies Of Novel 1, 10-Phenanthroline Derivatives, Eunjoo Kim Apr 2005

Synthetic And Structural Studies Of Novel 1, 10-Phenanthroline Derivatives, Eunjoo Kim

Masters Theses

Asymmetric catalysis can provide a general approach to the preparation of enantiomerically enriched compounds in organic synthesis. Very often these asymmetric catalysts consist of a chiral ligand-metal complex. Because of the growing demand to develop enantioselective reactions in organic chemistry one focus of this area of research is the design and characterization of new chiral ligands for asymmetric synthesis.

The focus of my research is in the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel 1, 10-phenanthroline derivatives that could be used as chiral ligands in enantioselective reactions. Central to these studies have been the effect of substituents on the B-ring of …

Lower Bounds For Simplicial Covers And Triangulations Of Cubes, Adam Bliss '03, Francis E. Su Apr 2005

Lower Bounds For Simplicial Covers And Triangulations Of Cubes, Adam Bliss '03, Francis E. Su

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We show that the size of a minimal simplicial cover of a polytope P is a lower bound for the size of a minimal triangulation of P, including ones with extra vertices. We then use this fact to study minimal triangulations of cubes, and we improve lower bounds for covers and triangulations in dimensions 4 through at least 12 (and possibly more dimensions as well). Important ingredients are an analysis of the number of exterior faces that a simplex in the cube can have of a specified dimension and volume, and a characterization of corner simplices in terms of their …

A Mathematical Model For Treatment-Resistant Mutations Of Hiv, Helen Moore, Weiqing Gu Apr 2005

A Mathematical Model For Treatment-Resistant Mutations Of Hiv, Helen Moore, Weiqing Gu

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

In this paper, we propose and analyze a mathematical model, in the form of a system of ordinary differential equations, governing mutated strains of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and their interactions with the immune system and treatments. Our model incorporates two types of resistant mutations: strains that are not responsive to protease inhibitors, and strains that are not responsive to reverse transcriptase inhibitors. It also includes strains that do not have either of these two types of resistance (wild-type virus) and strains that have both types. We perform our analysis by changing the system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) to …

Evidence Of Holocene Climate Change In A Nebraska Sandhills Wetland, Barbara Nicholson, James B. Swinehart Apr 2005

Evidence Of Holocene Climate Change In A Nebraska Sandhills Wetland, Barbara Nicholson, James B. Swinehart

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

The Nebraska Sandhills consist of 50,000 km2 of dunes, currently stabilized by vegetation. Radiocarbon dates of paleosols, blocked paleovalleys, and sand beds found in interdunal wetlands suggest that the Holocene had significant periods of dune reactivation. A paleoecological investigation was conducted in Jumbo Valley, NE, in an interdunal wetland known to contain sand layers interbedded with peat. The sedimentary record in two cores is continuous, except for some loss due to surficial burns. Macrofossils indicate that the late Pleistocene was cool and wet, with current vegetation establishing around 12,000 years ago. Sand and bulk density profiles reveal significant periods …

Strongly Decoupled Europium And Iron Vibrational Modes In Filled Skutterudites, Gary J. Long, Raphäel P. Hermann, Fernande Grandjean, Ercan E. Alp, Wolfgang Sturhahn, Charles E. Johnson, Dennis E. Brown, Olaf Leupold, Rudolf Rüffer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The europium partial vibrational density of states (DOS) in EuFe4Sb12 and the iron partial vibrational DOS in both EuFe4Sb12 and Ce57Fe4Sb12 have been obtained by nuclear inelastic scattering. The results reveal the strong independence of the iron and rare-earth vibrational modes. The cage filling europium only participates significantly to the low-energy local vibrational modes. The force constants have been obtained from the measured probability of nuclear absorption. The energies of the peaks in the europium and iron DOS are in excellent agreement with the calculated DOS in LaFe4 …
