Linking Physics And Algorithms In The Random-Field Ising Model, Alan Middleton, Jan H. Meinke Feb 2005

Linking Physics And Algorithms In The Random-Field Ising Model, Alan Middleton, Jan H. Meinke

Physics - All Scholarship

The energy landscape for the random-field Ising model (RFIM) is complex, yet algorithms such as the push-relabel algorithm exist for computing the exact ground state of an RFIM sample in time polynomial in the sample volume. Simulations were carried out to investigate the scaling properties of the push-relabel algorithm. The time evolution of the algorithm was studied along with the statistics of an auxiliary potential field. At very small random fields, the algorithm dynamics are closely related to the dynamics of two-species annihilation, consistent with fractal statistics for the distribution of minima in the potential (``height''). For $d=1,2$, a correlation …

Classical Resistivity Method In Atmosphere And Vacuum, Shigeyuki Takahashi

Senior Theses and Projects

In the space industry one of the most serious problems is charge storage on spacecrafts caused by plasma, solar-photoemission that causes damage to the spacecrafts. Therefore, the research by government and industry about spacecraft charging is thriving because there are still plenty of unknown faces in the space. A key first step for research of the phenomenon in ground-based laboratory test is to know well the most suitable experimental methods for measuring resistivity of spacecraft materials.

This talk describes my investigations of the Classical Resistivity (constant voltage capacitor) Method to measure resistivity. I concentrate on understanding the differences between tests …

Special Event Computerized Tracking Of Officers Reporting, Noel R. Macmahon

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The New York City Police Department needs a way to rapidly and accurately account for and assign personnel during a pre-planned special event. There are currently many archaic systems utilized throughout the Department, yet none of these formats utilizes a computerized system. Because there is no single off-the-shelf product currently available to perform all of the narrow tasks involved in this problem, a solution needs to be developed. The solution to this problem is developing a system that will be a single standard for the entire Department. This solution will combine various hardware devices and off-the-shelf software products into a …

Influence Of The Number Of Repellent-Treated And Untreated Food Or Water Containers On Intake By The European Starling, Arla G. Hile, Michael G. Tordoff Feb 2005

Influence Of The Number Of Repellent-Treated And Untreated Food Or Water Containers On Intake By The European Starling, Arla G. Hile, Michael G. Tordoff

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The availability of multiple sources of food and drink has a profound influence on choice behavior in rodents. It is not known how other taxa might respond to the same kind of variation in availability. We tested European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) with various combinations of unadulterated and repellent-treated (0.025% citronellyl acetate) resources. In Experiment 1, birds drank more plain than repellent-treated water than when given (a) 2 bottles of plain water and 2 of repellent-water, or (b) 3 bottles of plain water and 1 of repellent-water. However, they drank more repellent than water when given 3 bottles of repellent-water and …

Search For Anomalous Production Of Diphoton Events With Missing Transverse Energy At Cdf And Limits On Gauge-Mediated Supersymmetry-Breaking Models, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration Feb 2005

Search For Anomalous Production Of Diphoton Events With Missing Transverse Energy At Cdf And Limits On Gauge-Mediated Supersymmetry-Breaking Models, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present the results of a search for anomalous production of diphoton events with large missing transverse energy using the Collider Detector at Fermilab. In 202 pb-1 of pp̅ collisions at √s =1.96 TeV we observe no candidate events, with an expected standard model background of 0.27±0.07(stat)±0.10(syst) events. The results exclude a lightest chargino of mass less than 167 GeV/c2, and lightest neutralino of mass less than 93 GeV/c2 at 95% C.L. in a gauge-mediated supersymmetry-breaking model with a light gravitino.

Open Charm Yields In D+Au Collisions At √SNn = 200 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez Feb 2005

Open Charm Yields In D+Au Collisions At √SNn = 200 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez

Physics

Midrapidity open charm spectra from direct reconstruction of D0(D0)→Kπ± in d+Au collisions and indirect electron-positron measurements via charm semileptonic decays in p+p and d+Au collisions at √sNN=200  GeV are reported. The D0(D0) spectrum covers a transverse momentum (pT) range of 0.1T<3  GeV/c, whereas the electron spectra cover a range of 1T<4  GeV/c. The electron spectra show approximate binary collision scaling between p+p and d+Au collisions. From these two independent analyses, the differential cross section per nucleon-nucleon binary interaction at midrapidity for open charm production from d+Au collisions at BNL RHIC is dσNNc¯c/dy=0.30±0.04(stat)±0.09(syst)   mb. The results are compared to theoretical calculations. Implications for charmonium results in A+A collisions are discussed.

Comment On “Radiation Damage Of Biosystems Mediated By Secondary Electrons: Resonant Precursors For Uracil Molecules” † [J. Chem. Phys. 120, 7446 „ (2004)], Paul Burrow

Paul Burrow Publications

Gianturco and Lucchese have recently presented calculations reporting resonances in the electron scattering cross section of the RNA base uracil and discussed the role of these temporary negative ion states in various fragmentation processes. Such efforts in complex systems are highly commendable. However, the authors have not made a proper comparison of their calculated anion states with those measured and assigned earlier, although this latter work is cited in their paper. In particular, they omit any reference to the lowest-lying resonance observed previously.

The amplitudes and nodal characteristics of the resonance orbitals sat the geometry of the neutral moleculed certainly …

Extent And Duration Of The 2003 Cascadia Slow Earthquake, Walter Szeliga, Timothy I. Melbourne, M. Meghan Miller, Victor Marcelo Santillan

Faculty Scholarship for the Cascadia Hazards Institute

Inversion of continuous GPS measurements from the Pacific Northwest show the 2003 Cascadia slow earthquake to be among the largest of ten transients recognized here. Twelve stations bracketing slow slip indicate transient slip propagated bi-directionally from initiation in the southern Puget basin, reaching 300 km along-strike over a period of seven weeks. This event produced, for the first time, resolvable vertical subsidence, and horizontal displacement reaching six mm in southern Washington State. Inverted for non-negative thrust slip, a maximum of 3.8 cm of slip is inferred, centered at 28 km depth near the sharp arch in the subducting Juan de …

Apparent Soil Electrical Conductivity: Applications For Designing And Evaluating Field-Scale Experiments, C. K. Johnson, Kent M. Eskridge, D. L. Corwin

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

On-farm field-scale research has become increasingly common with the advent of new technologies. While promoting a realistic systems perspective, field-scale experiments do not lend themselves to the traditional design concepts of replication and blocking. Previously, a farm-scale dryland experiment in northeastern Colorado was conducted to evaluate apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) classification (within-field blocking) as a basis for estimating plot-scale experimental error. Comparison of meansquare (MS) errors for several soil properties and surface residue mass measured at this site, with those from a nearby plot-scale experiment, revealed that ECa-classified within-field variance approximates plot-scale experimental error. In the …

The Chromospheric Activity And Ages Of M Dwarf Stars In Wide Binary Systems, Nicole M. Silvesteri, T. D. Oswalt, Suzanne L. Hawley

Publications

We investigate the relationship between age and chromospheric activity for 139 M dwarf stars in wide binary systems with white dwarf companions. The age of each system is determined from the cooling age of its white dwarf component. The current limit for activity-age relations found for M dwarfs in open clusters is 4 Gyr. Our unique approach to finding ages for M stars allows for the exploration of this relationship at ages older than 4 Gyr. The general trend of stars remaining active for a longer time at later spectral type is confirmed. However, our larger sample and greater age …

Vertical Movement Of Water In A High Plains Aquifer Induced By A Pumping Well, Xunhong Chen, Yanfeng Yin, James W. Goeke, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Feb 2005

Vertical Movement Of Water In A High Plains Aquifer Induced By A Pumping Well, Xunhong Chen, Yanfeng Yin, James W. Goeke, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Field observation and numerical simulations were carried out to evaluate the hydraulic relationship between the shallow and deep aquifer of a High Plains Aquifer system, in which shallow and deep aquifers are separated by an aquitard. Pumping from the lower aquifer resulted in a small drawdown in the upper aquifer and a larger drawdown in the aquitard; pumping from the shallow aquifer caused a small drawdown in the aquitard and the deep aquifer. Analysis of pumping test data gives the values of the hydraulic conductivity of the aquitard and the deep aquifer. Long-term observation of groundwater levels in the shallow …

Temperature Dependence Of The Double Layer Capacitance For The Restricted Primitive Model Of An Electrolyte Solution From A Density Functional Approach, Douglas Henderson, J. Reszko-Zygmunt, Stefan Sokolowski, Dezso Boda

Faculty Publications

We apply a different version of the density functional theory, given by Pizio, Patrykiejew, and Sokolowski [J. Chem. Phys. 121, 11957 (2004)], for a nonuniform restricted primitive model of an electrolyte solution to evaluate the temperature dependence of the capacitance of an electric double layer. We show that this theory is capable of reproducing the computer simulation data at a quantitative level. In particular, the reversal of the temperature dependence of the capacitance at low temperatures is predicted. This phenomenon has been difficult to predict from theory. Further, this theory also leads to an accurate description of the double layer …

Ecological Functions And Values Of Fringing Salt Marshes Susceptible To Oil Spills In Casco Bay, Maine, Pamela A. Morgan, Michele Dionne, Richard Mackenzie, Lucas Curci Feb 2005

Ecological Functions And Values Of Fringing Salt Marshes Susceptible To Oil Spills In Casco Bay, Maine, Pamela A. Morgan, Michele Dionne, Richard Mackenzie, Lucas Curci

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Casco Bay is the largest oil port in Maine and northern New England, handling over 20 million tons of crude oil and oil products annually. The susceptibility of the Bay’s estuarine habitats, especially its fringing salt marshes, to potential spill events was the impetus for this study. Although much has been learned to date about the effects of oil spills on estuarine habitats around the world, there is a real need for site-specific knowledge of the structures and functions of local habitats so that resource managers can be prepared in the event of a spill. Our study focused specifically on …

Switchable Two-Dimensional Gratings Based On Field-Induced Layer Undulations In Cholesteric Liquid Crystals, B. I. Senyuk, I. I. Smalyukh, Oleg Lavrentovich Feb 2005

Switchable Two-Dimensional Gratings Based On Field-Induced Layer Undulations In Cholesteric Liquid Crystals, B. I. Senyuk, I. I. Smalyukh, Oleg Lavrentovich

Oleg Lavrentovich

We propose switchable two-dimensional (2D) diffractive gratings with periodic refractive-index modulation arising from layer undulations in cholesteric liquid crystals. The cholesteric cell can be switched between two states: (1) f lat layers of a planar cholesteric texture and (2) a square lattice of periodic director modulation associated with layer undulations that produces 2D diffraction patterns. The intensities of the diffraction maxima can be tuned by changing the applied field. The diffractive properties can be optimized for different wavelengths by appropriately choosing cholesteric pitch, cell thickness, and surface treatment.

A Comparison Of The Gas Phase Acidities Of Phospholipid Headgroups:Experimental And Computational Studies, M. C. Thomas, Todd Mitchell, Stephen J. Blanksby

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Proton-bound dimers consisting of two glycerophospholipids with different headgroups were prepared using negative ion electrospray ionization and dissociated in a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. Analysis of the tandem mass spectra of the dimers using the kinetic method provides, for the first time, an order of acidity for the phospholipid classes in the gas phase of PE < PA << PG < PS < PI. Hybrid density functional calculations on model phospholipids were used to predict the absolute deprotonation enthalpies of the phospholipid classes from isodesmic proton transfer reactions with phosphoric acid. The computational data largely support the experimental acidity trend, with the exception of the relative acidity ranking of the two most acidic phospholipid species. Possible causes of the discrepancy between experiment and theory are discussed and the experimental trend is recommended. The sequence of gas phase acidities for the phospholipid headgroups is found to; (i) have little correlation with the relative ionization efficiencies of the phospholipid classes observed in the negative ion electrospray process, and (ii) correlate well with fragmentation trends observed upon collisional activation of phospholipid [M-H]– anions.

The Dyad Theory Of Classical And Quantum Physics, Preston Jones

Publications

The 4-space equations of hydrodynamics, electrodynamics, and quantum mechanics are developed using the dyad calculus. Gravity is found to couple hydrodynamics, electrodynamics, and quantum mechanics through the 4- space metric and differential operator. Expanding the 4-space equations of electrodynamics a time varying metric is shown to dissipate electromagnetic energy.

Climatology Of Short-Period Gravity Waves Observed Over Northern Australia During The Darwin Area Wave Experiment (Dawex) And Their Dominant Source Regions, P. -D. Pautet, M. J. Taylor, Alan Z. Liu, Gary Swenson

Physical Sciences - Daytona Beach

The Darwin Area Wave Experiment (DAWEX) was designed to investigate the generation and propagation of gravity waves from intense regions of localized convection that occur regularly over northern Australia (in the vicinity of Darwin) during the premonsoon period. This multinational program was conducted during the austral spring 2001 using a range of coordinated optical, radar, and in situ balloon measurements. As part of this program, all-sky image observations of short-period gravity wave events in the near infrared OH nightglow emission (altitude ~87 km) were made from two well-separated sites in northern Australia: Wyndham (15.5ºS, 128.1ºE) and Katherine (14.5ºS, 132.3ºE), over …

The N2K ("next 2000") consortium is carrying out a distributed observing campaign with the Keck, Magellan, and Subaru telescopes, as well as the automatic photometric telescopes of Fairborn Observatory, in order to search for short-period gas giant planets around metal-rich stars. We have established a reservoir of more than 14,000 main-sequence and subgiant stars closer than 110 pc, brighter than V = 10.5, and with 0.4 < B - V < 1.2. Because the fraction of stars with planets is a sensitive function of stellar metallicity, a broadband photometric calibration has been developed to identify a subset of 2000 stars with [Fe/H] > 0.1 dex for this survey. We outline the strategy and report the detection of a planet orbiting the metal-rich G5 IV star HD 88133 with a period of 3.41 days, semivelocity amplitude K = …

Response Factor Considerations For The Quantitative Analysis Of Western Redcedar (Thuja Plicaia) Foliar Monoterpenes, Bruce A. Kimball, John H. Russell, Doreen L. Griffin, John J. Johnston

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

A method is described for quantitative analysis of monoterpenes in western redcedar (Thuja plicata) foliage by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection. Response factors for monoterpenes identified in redcedar are evaluated to determine similarities among monoterpene responses. Evaluation demonstrates that redcedar monoterpenes yield detector responses that fall into two groups. One monoterpene from each group is used as a standard for quantitative analysis. Redcedar monoterpenes are quantitated by comparing analyte response with the response factor of one of the standards in single-point calibrations. Homogenized foliage samples are extracted with ethyl acetate and the extracts passed through a solid phase extraction …

Fixed-Width Output Analysis For Markov Chain Monte Carlo, Galin L. Jones, Murali Haran, Brian S. Caffo, Ronald Neath Feb 2005

Fixed-Width Output Analysis For Markov Chain Monte Carlo, Galin L. Jones, Murali Haran, Brian S. Caffo, Ronald Neath

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Markov chain Monte Carlo is a method of producing a correlated sample in order to estimate features of a complicated target distribution via simple ergodic averages. A fundamental question in MCMC applications is when should the sampling stop? That is, when are the ergodic averages good estimates of the desired quantities? We consider a method that stops the MCMC sampling the first time the width of a confidence interval based on the ergodic averages is less than a user-specified value. Hence calculating Monte Carlo standard errors is a critical step in assessing the output of the simulation. In particular, we …

Chemistry and Biochemistry

The present invention provides a new process for the preparation of 2S,3S-N-isobutyl-N-(2-hydroxy-3-amino-4phenylbutyl)- p-nitrobenzenesulfonylamide hydrochloride, wherein this compound is prepared directly from the chloromethylalcohol. Importantly, the process of the present invention results in higher yields of 2S,3S-N-isobutyl-N-(2hydroxy -3 -amino -4-phenylbutyl) -pnitrobenzenesulfonylamide hydrochloride without sacrificing its purity. The processes of the present invention can be used to prepare not only the 2S,3S-derivative, but also the 2R,3S-, 2S,2R- and the 2R,3R-derivatives.
