A Theoretical Investigation Of Charge Transfer In Several Substituted Acridinium Ions, Jason Lappe '00, Robert J. Cave, Marshall D. Newton, I.V. Rostov

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We present calculations for various properties of the ground and excited states of several arylamine-substituted acridinium ion systems that have been studied experimentally. Using ab initio and semiempirical quantum mechanical methods together with the generalized Mulliken−Hush (GMH) model, we examine the excitation energies, dipole moment shifts, and electronic coupling elements for the vertical charge shift (CSh) processes in these systems. We also examine solvent effects on these properties using a dielectric continuum reaction field model. The results are in generally good agreement with available experimental results and indicate that there is strong electronic coupling in these systems over a wide …

Properties Of One-Point Completions Of A Noncompact Metrizable Space, Melvin Henriksen, Ludvík Janoš, R. G. Woods Jan 2005

Properties Of One-Point Completions Of A Noncompact Metrizable Space, Melvin Henriksen, Ludvík Janoš, R. G. Woods

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

If a metrizable space X is dense in a metrizable space Y, then Y is called a metric extension of X. If T1 and T2 are metric extensions of X and there is a continuous map of T2 into T1 keeping X pointwise fixed, we write T1 ≤ T2. If X is noncompact and metrizable, then (M(X),≤) denotes the set of metric extensions of X, where T1 and T2 are identified if T1 ≤ T2 and T2 ≤ T1, i.e., if there is a homeomorphism of …

C(X) Can Sometimes Determine X Without X Being Realcompact, Melvin Henriksen, Biswajit Mitra Jan 2005

C(X) Can Sometimes Determine X Without X Being Realcompact, Melvin Henriksen, Biswajit Mitra

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

As usual C(X) will denote the ring of real-valued continuous functions on a Tychonoff space X. It is well-known that if X and Y are realcompact spaces such that C(X) and C(Y ) are isomorphic, then X and Y are homeomorphic; that is C(X) determines X. The restriction to realcompact spaces stems from the fact that C(X) and C(uX) are isomorphic, where uX is the (Hewitt) realcompactifcation of X. In this note, a class of locally compact spaces X that includes properly the class of locally compact realcompact spaces is exhibited such that C(X) determines X. The problem of getting …

Security Governance: Its Impact On Security Culture, K. Koh, A. B. Ruighaver, S. B. Maynard, A. Ahmad

Research outputs pre 2011

While there is an overwhelming amount of literature that recognises the need for organisations to create a security culture in order to effectively manage security, little is known about how to create a good security culture or even what constitutes a good security culture. In this paper, we report on one of two case studies performed to examine how security governance influences security culture and in particular, the sense of responsibility and ownership of security. The results indicate that although the structural and functional mechanisms in security governance are influencing factors, it is the extent of social participation that may …

Electrochemical Detection Of Nanoscale Phase Separation In Binary Self-Assembled Monolayers, R. Carlisle Chambers, Christina E. Inman, James E. Hutchison

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Developing methods to probe the nature and structure of nanoscale environments continues to be a challenge in nanoscience. We report a cyclic voltammetry investigation of internal, hydrogen-bond driven phase separation of amide-containing thiols and alkane thiols. Amide-containing thiols with a terminal ferrocene carboxylate functional group were investigated in two binary monolayers, one homogeneously mixed and the other phase separated. The electrochemical response of the ferrocene probe was used to monitor adsorbate coverage, environment and phase separation within each of these monolayers. The results demonstrate that the behavior of ferrocene containing monolayers can be used to probe nanoscale organization.

A Context-Dependent Model Of Proximity In Physically Situated Environments, John D. Kelleher, Geert-Jan M. Kruijff Jan 2005

A Context-Dependent Model Of Proximity In Physically Situated Environments, John D. Kelleher, Geert-Jan M. Kruijff

Conference papers

The paper presents a computational model for a context-dependent analysis of a physical environment in terms of spatial proximity. The model provides a basis for grounding linguistic analyses of spatial expressions in visual perception. The model uses potential fields to model spatial proximity. It has been implemented, and when combined with a handcrafted grammar, is used to enable a conversational robot to carry out a situated dialogue with a human. The key concept in our approach is defining the region that is proximal to a landmark based on the spatial configuration of other objects in the scene. The model extends …

Queuing Systems With Multiple Fbm-Based Traffic Models, Mihaela Teodora Matache, Valentin Matache Jan 2005

Queuing Systems With Multiple Fbm-Based Traffic Models, Mihaela Teodora Matache, Valentin Matache

Mathematics Faculty Publications

A multiple fractional Brownian motion (FBM)-based traffic model is considered. Various lower bounds for the overflow probability of the associated queueing system are obtained. Based on a probabilistic bound for the busy period of an ATM queueing system associated with a multiple FBM-based input traffic, a minimal dynamic buffer allocation function (DBAF) is obtained and a DBAF-allocation algorithm is designed. The purpose is to create an upper bound for the queueing system associated with the traffic. This upper bound, called a DBAF, is a function of time, dynamically bouncing with the traffic. An envelope process associated with the multiple FBM-based …

Asynchronous Random Boolean Network Model Based On Elementary Cellular Automata Rule 126, Mihaela Teodora Matache, Jack Heidel

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This paper considers a simple Boolean network with N nodes, each node’s state at time tbeing determined by a certain number k of parent nodes, which is fixed for all nodes. The nodes, with randomly assigned neighborhoods, are updated based on various asynchronous schemes. We make use of a Boolean rule that is a generalization of rule 126 of elementary cellular automata. We provide formulas for the probability of finding a node in state 1 at a time t for the class of asynchronous random Boolean networks (ARBN) in which only one node is updated at every time step, and …

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

The effects of cattle grazing on stream stability have been well documented for the western portion of the U.S., but are lacking for the east. Stream and riparian damage resulting from grazing can include alterations in watershed hydrology, changes to stream morphology, soil compaction and erosion, destruction of vegetation, and water quality impairments. However, few studies have examined the successes of best management practices (BMPs) for mitigating these effects. The objective of this project was to assess the ability of two common BMPs to reduce streambank erosion along a central Kentucky stream. The project site consisted of two replications of …

Studies Of Unusual Packing And Of Polymorphism In Two Crystal Systems, Xiang Hao Jan 2005

Studies Of Unusual Packing And Of Polymorphism In Two Crystal Systems, Xiang Hao

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Crystal structures of anhydrous pinacol, the hexagonal pinacol, pinacol monohydrate, and pinacol hexahydrate were studied. In all the structures crystal packing is unusual and complicated. The origin of the complexity may be the difficulty in filling space densely and while also satisfying the H-bonding requirements when the molecule has few internal degrees of freedom.

Five 15-crown-5 complexes of M(NO3)2 (M = Cu, Zn, Mg, Co, Mn) were synthesized and characterized using X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. The system is rich in polymorphs. Nine definite solid-state phases were identified. More phases probably exist in the solid state …

Root Subgroups Of The Rank Two Unitary Groups, Matthew Thomas Henes Jan 2005

Root Subgroups Of The Rank Two Unitary Groups, Matthew Thomas Henes

Theses Digitization Project

Discusses certain one-parameter subgroups of the low-rank unitary groups called root subgroups. Unitary groups also have representations of Lie type which means they consist of transformations that act as automorphisms of an underlying Lie algebra, in this case the special linear algebra. Exploring this definition of the unitary groups, we find a correlation, via exponentiation, to the basis elements of Lie algebra.
