A Random Rotation Perturbation Approach To Privacy Preserving Data Classification, Keke Chen, Ling Liu
A Random Rotation Perturbation Approach To Privacy Preserving Data Classification, Keke Chen, Ling Liu
Kno.e.sis Publications
This paper presents a random rotation perturbation approach for privacy preserving data classification. Concretely, we identify the importance of classification-specific information with respect to the loss of information factor, and present a random rotation perturbation framework for privacy preserving data classification. Our approach has two unique characteristics. First, we identify that many classification models utilize the geometric properties of datasets, which can be preserved by geometric rotation. We prove that the three types of classifiers will deliver the same performance over the rotation perturbed dataset as over the original dataset. Second, we propose a multi-column privacy model to address the …

Variational Bayesian Image Modelling, Li Chen, Feng Jiao, Dale Schuurmans, Shaojun Wang

We present a variational Bayesian framework for performing inference, density estimation and model selection in a special class of graphical models—Hidden Markov Random Fields (HMRFs). HMRFs are particularly well suited to image modelling and in this paper, we apply them to the problem of image segmentation. Unfortunately, HMRFs are notoriously hard to train and use because the exact inference problems they create are intractable. Our main contribution is to introduce an efficient variational approach for performing approximate inference of the Bayesian formulation of HMRFs, which we can then apply to the density estimation and model selection problems that arise when …

Web services are the new paradigm for distributed computing. They have much to offer towards interoperability of applications and integration of large scale distributed systems. To make Web services accessible to users, service providers use Web service registries to publish them. Current infrastructure of registries requires replication of all Web service publications in all Universal Business Registries. Large growth in number of Web services as well as the growth in the number of registries would make this replication impractical. In addition, the current Web service discovery mechanism is inefficient, as it does not support discovery based on the capabilities of …

Semantics is seen as the key ingredient in the next phase of the Web infrastructure as well as the next generation of enterprise content management. Ontology is the centerpiece of the most prevalent semantic technologies and provides the basis of representing, acquiring, and utilizing knowledge. With the availability of several commercial products and many research tools, specifications and increasing adoption of Semantic Web standards such as RDF for metadata and OWL for ontology representation, ontology-driven techniques and systems have already enabled a new generation of industry strength semantic applications. In particular, Semagix's Freedom has powered applications in leading verticals such …

Discovering patterns in graphs has long been an area of interest. In most contemporary approaches to such pattern discovery either quantitative anomalies or frequency of substructure is used to measure the interestingness of a pattern. In this paper we address the issue of discovering informative sub-graphs within RDF graphs. We motivate our work with an example related to Semantic Search. A user might pose a question of the form: ' What are the most relevant ways in which entity X is related to entity Y?' the response to which is a subgraph connecting X to Y. Relevance of the …

Web services have the potential to revolutionize e-commerce by enabling businesses to interact with each other on the fly. To date, however, Web processes using Web services have been created mostly at the syntactic level. Current composition standards focus on building processes based on the interface description of the participating services. This rigid approach, with its strong coupling between the process and the interface of the participating services, does not allow businesses to dynamically change partners and services. As shown in this article, Web process composition techniques can be enhanced by using semantic process templates to capture the semantic requirements …

The amount of glycomics data being generated is rapidly increasing as a result of improvements in analytical and computational methods. Correlation and analysis of this large, distributed data set requires an extensible and flexible representational standard that is also ‘understood’ by a wide range of software applications. An XML-based data representation standard that faithfully captures essential structural details of a glycan moiety along with additional information (such as data provenance) to aid the interpretation and usage of glycan data, will facilitate the exchange of glycomics data across the scientific community. To meet this need, we introduce GLYcan Data Exchange (GLYDE) …

The "Best K" For Entropy-Based Categorical Data Clustering, Keke Chen, Ling Liu
Kno.e.sis Publications
With the growing demand on cluster analysis for categorical data, a handful of categorical clustering algorithms have been developed. Surprisingly, to our knowledge, none has satisfactorily addressed the important problem for categorical clustering – how can we determine the best K number of clusters for a categorical dataset? Since categorical data does not have the inherent distance function as the similarity measure, traditional cluster validation techniques based on the geometry shape and density distribution cannot be applied to answer this question. In this paper, we investigate the entropy property of the categorical data and propose a BkPlot method for determining …

Web services have primarily been designed for providing inter-operability between business applications. Current technologies assume a large amount of human interaction, for integrating two applications. This is primarily due to the fact that business process integration requires understanding of data and functions of the involved entities. Semantic Web technologies, powered by description logic based languages like OWL[1], aim to add greater meaning to Web content, by annotating the data with ontologies. Ontologies provide a mechanism of providing shared conceptualizations of domains. This allows agents to get an understanding of users’ Web content and greatly reduces human interaction for meaningful Web …

Science-Based Organic Farming 2005: Toward Local And Secure Food Systems, Charles A. Francis, Twyla Hansen, Peter Skelton
Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)
Organic farming includes growing food and fiber — animals, agronomic crops, horticultural fruits and vegetables, related products — as one dynamic and rapidly evolving component of our complex U.S. food system. Even as more farmers are moving toward organic certification and participation in an environmentally sound and economically lucrative market, questions arise about the long-term social impacts and sustainability of a set of practices that has gone from a movement to an industry. Consolidations in the organic trade have brought multinational corporations to the table, as they have observed a grassroots activity that has grown by 20% per year for …

The Essential Features Of The Personalized System Of Instruction (Psi) Or The Keller Plan, Robert Fuller
The Essential Features Of The Personalized System Of Instruction (Psi) Or The Keller Plan, Robert Fuller
Personalized System of Instruction (PSI), or Keller Plan, Materials
While the elements vary somewhat from list to list most authors agree that the five points presented here constitute the essential aspects of PSI. Even wider variation exists among lists of learning principles prepared by various psychologists. While some arbitrariness is inevitable, the principles offered in support of each element of the PSI approach were chosen in an attempt to represent at least a modicum of consensus among psychologists concerning the way humans learn. These principles are offered here primarily as a means of showing how the Keller Plan incorporates some of the basic concepts of learning.

The Personalized System of Instruction (PSI), or Keller Plan – Thirty Years Later
In the early 1970s a mastery-oriented, self-paced style of instruction, called the Personalized System of Instruction, or Keller Plan, came into physics courses. For a few years the Keller Plan flourished and reached an apex in physics with the publication of a complete set of Keller Plan materials for the calculus-based physics course in 1975. By 1980 it had all but disappeared from physics courses. This presentation will discuss the features of the Keller Plan, the explanations of why it disappeared and what are some attributes of …

There are a variety of LaTeX classes which can be used to produce "overhead slides" for presentations. One of these, beamer, provides flexible and powerful environments which can be used to create slides and PDF-based documents suitable for presentations. Although the class is extensively documented, first-time users may prefer learning about this class using a collection of graduated examples. The examples presented here cover a wide spectrum of use, from the simplest static slides to those with dynamic effects.

Belowground Productivity Of Mangrove Forests In Southwest Florida, Beatriz Eugenia Giraldo Sánchez
Belowground Productivity Of Mangrove Forests In Southwest Florida, Beatriz Eugenia Giraldo Sánchez
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Studies in belowground dynamics are limited mainly due to the difficulty of studying roots despite wide recognition of its importance. This dissertation focused on methods for analyzing mangrove roots, root responses to phosphorus and flooding, and variation in root production between forest types. Techniques to separate live and dead roots such as colorimetric, fluorescence, buoyancy, and visual assessment were compared. The traditional method of visual assessment combined with root buoyancy was accurate, fast, and applicable to larger samples. Additionally, techniques such as rhizotrons, root ingrowth cores, and root image analysis were useful to study mangrove roots. Root and litter production, …
Consistency Management Among Replicas In Peer-To-Peer Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Takahiro Hara
Consistency Management Among Replicas In Peer-To-Peer Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Takahiro Hara
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Recent advances in wireless communication along with peer-to-peer (P2P) paradigm have led to increasing interest in P2P mobile ad hoc networks. In this paper, we assume an environment where each mobile peer accesses data items held by other peers which are connected by a mobile ad hoc network. Since peers' mobility causes frequent network partitions, replicas of a data item may be inconsistent due to write operations performed by mobile peers. In such an environment, the global consistency of data items is not desirable by many applications. Thus, new consistency maintenance based on local conditions such as location and time …

Segmental Dynamics In Poly(Methyl Acrylate)-D3 On Strongly And Weakly Adsorbing Silica Surfaces, Burak Metin, Frank D. Blum
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The segmental dynamics of a polymer on a solid surface appears to be significantly different than that in bulk. The strength of the interaction between polymer segments and a solid surface is likely to be an important factor affecting the segmental mobility of the polymers. Studies of polymers on a weakly adsorbing surface would provide additional understanding of their motional characteristics on surfaces. In a recent NMR study by Rivillon et al., chain dynamics was seen to be different for samples, even when there was no specific interaction with the surface. Peanasky et al. have found a restricted segmental dynamics …

College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship
This paper presents a mathematical model for basketball free throws. It is intended to be a supplement to an existing calculus course and could easily be used as a basis for a calculus project. Students will learn how to apply calculus to model an interesting real-world problem, from problem identification all the way through to interpretation and verification. Along the way we will introduce topics such as optimization (univariate and multiobjective), numerical methods, and differential equations.

Effect Of Phosphoric Acid Anion Structure On The Corrosion Inhibition Of Steel By Polyaniline, Yasir Idlibi, Thomas P. Schuman, James O. Stoffer
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Conductive polymers such as polyaniline (PAni) have been examined as candidates for replacing the existing chromate systems. Protonation of emeraldine base creates polarons and bipolarons, single and paired radical cations, respectively, of higher bond energy levels within the molecular orbital band gap.' For a conductive coating, considerable delocalization of corrosion charge and potential may be obtained along or between the polymer chains, because of high electron mobility. Current corrosion systems based on polyaniline typically rely on sulfuric or sulfonic acids as a dopant material, since synthetic techniques utilize persulfates as the oxidant of choice. In our experience, sulfonic/sulfuric acid systems …

An Hmm-Based Framework For Video Semantic Analysis, Gu Xu, Yu-Fei Ma, Hong-Jiang Zhang, Shiqiang Yang
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Video semantic analysis is essential in video indexing and structuring. However, due to the lack of robust and generic algorithms, most of the existing works on semantic analysis are limited to specific domains. In this paper, we present a novel hidden Markove model (HMM)-based framework as a general solution to video semantic analysis. In the proposed framework, semantics in different granularities are mapped to a hierarchical model space, which is composed of detectors and connectors. In this manner, our model decomposes a complex analysis problem into simpler subproblems during the training process and automatically integrates those subproblems for recognition. The …

Dynamical Systems With Time Delay, Norma Ortiz
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, we study necessary conditions and weak invariance properties of dynamical systems with time delay. A number of results have been obtained recently that refine necessary conditions of optimal solutions for nonsmooth dynamical systems without time delay. In this dissertation, we examine the extension of some of these results to problems with time delay. In particular, we study the generalized problem of Bolza with the addition of delay in the state and velocity variables and refer to this problem as the Neutral Problem of Bolza. We consider the relationship between the generalized problem of Bolza with time delay …

Adaptive Remote Visualization System With Optimized Network Performance For Large Scale Scientific Data, Mengxia Zhu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation discusses algorithmic and implementation aspects of an automatically configurable remote visualization system, which optimally decomposes and adaptively maps the visualization pipeline to a wide-area network. The first node typically serves as a data server that generates or stores raw data sets and a remote client resides on the last node equipped with a display device ranging from a personal desktop to a powerwall. Intermediate nodes can be located anywhere on the network and often include workstations, clusters, or custom rendering engines. We employ a regression model-based network daemon to estimate the effective bandwidth and minimal delay of a …
