The Geographically Contiguous And Expanding Coastal Range Of The Northern Curlytail Lizard (Leiocephalus Carinatus Armouri ) In Florida, Walter E. Meshaka Jr., Henry T. Smith, Richard M. Engeman, Christopher L. Dean, Jon A. Moore, William E. O'Brien Jan 2005

The Geographically Contiguous And Expanding Coastal Range Of The Northern Curlytail Lizard (Leiocephalus Carinatus Armouri ) In Florida, Walter E. Meshaka Jr., Henry T. Smith, Richard M. Engeman, Christopher L. Dean, Jon A. Moore, William E. O'Brien

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We surveyed for the presence of the Northern Curlytail Lizard, Leiocephalus carinatus armouri, from Port Salerno, Martin County, FL, northward to the Indian River-Brevard county line to determine the extent to which this species occurs along the Florida East Coast. The geographic range of L. c. armouri appears to be uninterrupted along the coast from northern Broward County through Palm Beach County. The heavily modified coastal habitat provided this species with the open sunny conditions and cement analogues to the rocky substratum to which it is adapted. Its ubiquity, rate of geographic expansion, combined with its carnivorous habits and large …

Spatial Ecology Of Swift Fox Social Groups: From Group Formation To Mate Loss, Ann M. Kitchen, Erik M. Gese, Seija M. Karki, Edward R. Schauster

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We examined social group formation, movements and denning relative to other group members, home-range use, and the response to social group disruption among 188 radiocollared swift foxes (Vulpes velox) in Colorado. We found that during the initial stages of pair formation mated foxes shared dens more frequently than during the remainder of their pair-bond. The average distance between mated pairs was influenced by season and time of day, with the greatest proximity in the breeding season (727.2 m 6 42.3 SE), and during diurnal hours (463.7 6 34.7 m). Female foxes spent more time in the core area of the …

Interactions Between The American White Pelican And Aquaculture In The Southeastern United States: An Overview, D. Tommy King Jan 2005

Interactions Between The American White Pelican And Aquaculture In The Southeastern United States: An Overview, D. Tommy King

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The eastern metapopulation of the American White Pelican ( Pelecanus erythrorhynchos ) breeds mainly in the Northern Great Plains, migrates through the Great Plains and along the Mississippi River and winters in the lower Mississippi River Valley and along the Gulf of Mexico. The production of farm-raised Channel Catfish ( Ictalurus punctatus ) in the southeastern United States has increased dramatically in the last 25 years. In 1990, U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services offices in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi began receiving complaints concerning the foraging of pelicans in commercial Channel Catfish ponds. Because of the relatively shallow depth and …

A Comparison Of Three Trap Designs For Capturing Brown Treesnakes On Guam, Daniel S. Vice, Richard M. Engeman, Diane L. Vice Jan 2005

A Comparison Of Three Trap Designs For Capturing Brown Treesnakes On Guam, Daniel S. Vice, Richard M. Engeman, Diane L. Vice

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The accidental introduction of the brown treesnake (Boiga irregularis) to Guam has resulted in the extirpation of most native terrestrial vertebrates on the island, thousands of power outages, and significant ecological changes. In addition, Guam now serves as a source population for the dispersal of snakes to other islands. Control of the brown treesnake is dependent upon the use of traps in a variety of settings, including port environments and in forested habitat A variety of snake traps have been used on Guam; most consist of a modified crawfish or minnow trap, housing a live mouse that serves as a …

Slow Migration Of Capsicum Oleoresin In A Sandy Loam Soil, Ray T. Sterner, Bruce A. Kimball

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

A mixture of 16.4770.038 L concentrated capsicum oleoresin with 163.873.63L water and a total of 17.2L concentrated soybean oil with 177.1L water was dispensed over five 4.87m4.87m plots via a grid of 128 augured holes (E15 cmdiameter E30 cm deep) in a compacted, sandy loam soil. During the next 9 days, a total of 37 soil samples were obtained from these plots and other off-plot areas. Spectrophotometric analyses of dual aliquots of soil samples were performed to detect absorbance of capsaicin (lmax at 282 nm). Analysis of variance showed that absorbance readings from points of capsicum application (augured holes) were …

Coyote Movements And Social Structure Along A Cryptic Population Genetic Subdivision, Benjamin N. Sacks, Brian R. Mitchell, Christen L. Williams, Holly B. Ernest Jan 2005

Coyote Movements And Social Structure Along A Cryptic Population Genetic Subdivision, Benjamin N. Sacks, Brian R. Mitchell, Christen L. Williams, Holly B. Ernest

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

A recent region-wide study determined that the central California coyote ( Canis latrans ) population was genetically subdivided according to habitat bioregions, supporting the hypothesis that coyotes exhibit a dispersal bias toward their natal habitat type. Here, we further investigated this hypothesis using radio-collared coyotes captured on a 150-km 2 study site on the border of (i.e. overlapping) two bioregions (Great Valley and Cascade Mountains). As predicted, most coyotes were assigned (based on a priori genetic criteria) to genetic clusters corresponding to one of these two bioregions. All of those assigned to the Great Valley genetic cluster were caught in …

On The Regulation Of Networks As Complex Systems: A Graph Theory Approach, Daniel F. Spulber, Christopher S. Yoo Jan 2005

On The Regulation Of Networks As Complex Systems: A Graph Theory Approach, Daniel F. Spulber, Christopher S. Yoo

All Faculty Scholarship

The dominant approach to regulating communications networks treats each network component as if it existed in isolation. In so doing, the current approach fails to capture one of the essential characteristics of networks, which is the complex manner in which components interact with one another when combined into an integrated system. In this Essay, Professors Daniel Spulber and Christopher Yoo propose a new regulatory framework based on the discipline of mathematics known as graph theory, which better captures the extent to which networks represent complex systems. They then apply the insights provided by this framework to a number of current …

Toric Residue And Combinatorial Degree, Ivan Soprunov Jan 2005

Toric Residue And Combinatorial Degree, Ivan Soprunov

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Consider an -dimensional projective toric variety defined by a convex lattice polytope . David Cox introduced the toric residue map given by a collection of divisors on . In the case when the are -invariant divisors whose sum is , the toric residue map is the multiplication by an integer number. We show that this number is the degree of a certain map from the boundary of the polytope to the boundary of a simplex. This degree can be computed combinatorially. We also study radical monomial ideals of the homogeneous coordinate ring of . We give a necessary and sufficient …

Cyclic Maps In Rational Homotopy Theory, Gregory Lupton, Sam Smith Jan 2005

Cyclic Maps In Rational Homotopy Theory, Gregory Lupton, Sam Smith

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

The notion of a cyclic map g:A→X is a natural generalization of a Gottlieb element in π n (X). We investigate cyclic maps from a rational homotopy theory point of view. We show a number of results for rationalized cyclic maps which generalize well-known results on the rationalized Gottlieb groups.

Homotopy Actions, Cyclic Maps And Their Duals, Martin Arkowitz, Gregory Lupton Jan 2005

Homotopy Actions, Cyclic Maps And Their Duals, Martin Arkowitz, Gregory Lupton

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

An action of A on X is a map F: AxX to X such that F|_X = id: X to X. The restriction F|_A: A to X of an action is called a cyclic map. Special cases of these notions include group actions and the Gottlieb groups of a space, each of which has been studied extensively. We prove some general results about actions and their Eckmann-Hilton duals. For instance, we classify the actions on an H-space that are compatible with the H-structure. As a corollary, we prove that if any two actions F and F' of A on X …

Combinatorial Construction Of Toric Residues, Amit Khetan, Ivan Soprunov Jan 2005

Combinatorial Construction Of Toric Residues, Amit Khetan, Ivan Soprunov

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

In this paper we investigate the problem of finding an explicit element whose toric residue is equal to one. Such an element is shown to exist if and only if the associated polytopes are essential. We reduce the problem to finding a collection of partitions of the lattice points in the polytopes satisfying a certain combinatorial property. We use this description to solve the problem when n=2 and for any n when the polytopes of the divisors share a complete flag of faces. The latter generalizes earlier results when the divisors were all ample

Free And Semi-Inert Cell Attachments, Peter Bubenik Jan 2005

Free And Semi-Inert Cell Attachments, Peter Bubenik

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Let Y be the space obtained by attaching a finite-type wedge of cells to a simply-connected, finite-type CW-complex. We introduce the free and semi-inert conditions on the attaching map which broadly generalize the previously-studied inert condition. Under these conditions we determine H (QY; R) as an R-module and as an R-algebra, respectively. Under a further condition we show that H. (QY; R) is generated by Hurewicz images. As an example we study an infinite family of spaces constructed using only semi-inert cell attachments.

The Use Of Discontinuities And Functional Groups To Assess Relative Resilience In Complex Systems, Craig R. Allen, L. Gunderson, A. R. Johnson Jan 2005

The Use Of Discontinuities And Functional Groups To Assess Relative Resilience In Complex Systems, Craig R. Allen, L. Gunderson, A. R. Johnson

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

It is evident when the resilience of a system has been exceeded and the system qualitatively changed. However, it is not clear how to measure resilience in a system prior to the demonstration that the capacity for resilient response has been exceeded. We argue that self-organizing human and natural systems are structured by a relatively small set of processes operating across scales in time and space. These structuring processes should generate a discontinuous distribution of structures and frequencies, where discontinuities mark the transition from one scale to another. Resilience is not driven by the identity of elements of a system, …

Determination Of Goslarite–Bianchite Equilibria By The Humidity-Buffer Technique At 0.1 Mpa, I-Ming Chou, Robert R. Seal Ii Jan 2005

Determination Of Goslarite–Bianchite Equilibria By The Humidity-Buffer Technique At 0.1 Mpa, I-Ming Chou, Robert R. Seal Ii

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Goslarite–bianchite equilibria were determined along four humidity-buffer curves at 0.1 MPa and between 27 and 36 °C. Results, based on tight reversals along each humidity buffer, can be represented by ln K (±0.005)=19.643-7015.38/T, where K is the equilibrium constant and T is temperature in K. Our data are in excellent agreement with several previous vapor-pressure measurements and are consistent with the solubility data reported in the literature. Thermodynamic analysis of these data yields 9.634 (±0.056) kJ mol-1 for the standard Gibbs free energy of reaction, which is in good agreement with the value of 9.658 kJ mol-1 calculated …

Ybco Coated Conductor Using Biaxially Textured Clad Composite Ni-Mn/Ni-Cr Substrate, D Q. Shi, S X. Dou, R. K. Ko, J K. Chung, H S. Kim, H S. Ha, K J. Song, C. Park

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A new biaxially textured composite tape of Ni–4.5% Mn/Ni–1.5% Cr was used as a substrate for a YBCO coated conductor through the RABiTS approach. Multi-layer CeO2/YSZ/Y2O3 buffer layers and YBCO film were deposited on the substrate by pulsed laser deposition. The deposition conditions of the buffer layers and the YBCO were studied and compared. Good biaxial textures have been obtained for buffer layers on composite Ni–4.5% Mn/Ni–1.5% Cr substrates. Scanning electron microscopy on sample cross-sections was used to examine the interface and diffusion of oxygen. The uniform formation of an Ni–Mn–O layer between NiO and …

Nano-Structured Sno2-Carbon Composites Obtained By In Situ Spray Pyrolysis Method As Anodes In Lithium Batteries, Ling Yuan, Konstantin Konstantinov, Guoxiu Wang, Hua-Kun Liu, S X. Dou

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

In this paper, we report on a series of SnO2-carbon nano-composites synthesized by in situ spray pyrolysis of a solution of SnCl2·2H2O and sucrose at 700 °C. The process results in super fine nanocrystalline SnO2, which is homogeneously distributed inside the amorphous carbon matrix. The SnO2 was revealed as a structure of broken hollow spheres with porosity on both the inside and outside particle surfaces. This structure promises a highly developed specific surface area. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and transmission electron microscope (TEM) images revealed the SnO2 crystal size is …

Magnetic Ordering And Spin Waves In Na0.82coo2, S P. Bayrakci, I Mirebeau, P Bourges, Y Sidis, M Enderle, J Mesot, Dapeng Chen, C T Lin, B Keimer

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

NaxCoO2, the parent compound of the recently synthesized superconductor NaxCoO2∶yH2O, exhibits bulk antiferromagnetic order below ∼20   K for 0.75≤x≤0.9. We have performed neutron scattering experiments in which we observed Bragg reflections corresponding to A-type antiferromagnetic order in a Na0.82CoO2 single crystal and characterized the corresponding spin-wave dispersions. The spin waves exhibit a strongly energy-dependent linewidth. The in-plane and out-of-plane exchange constants resulting from a fit to a nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model are similar in magnitude, which is unexpected in view of the layered crystal structure of NaxCoO2. Possible implications of these observations are discussed.

Access Games: A Game Theoretic Framework For Fair Bandwidth Sharing In Distributed Systems, Sudipta Rakshit Jan 2005

Access Games: A Game Theoretic Framework For Fair Bandwidth Sharing In Distributed Systems, Sudipta Rakshit

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, the central objective is to achieve fairness in bandwidth sharing amongst selfish users in a distributed system. Because of the inherent contention-based nature of the distributed medium access and the selfishness of the users, the distributed medium access is modeled as a non-cooperative game; designated as the Access Game. A p-CSMA type medium access scenario is proposed for all the users. Therefore, in the Access Game, each user has two actions to choose from: "transmit" and "wait". The outcome of the Access Game and payoffs to each user depends on the actions taken by all the users. …

Atomic Layer Depostion Of Tio2/Al2o3 Films For Optical Applications, G Triani, P J. Evans, D Rg Mitchell, D J. Attard, K Finnie, M James, T Hanley, B Latella, Kathryn Prince, J Bartlett

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is an important technology for depositing functional coatings on accessible, reactive surfaces with precise control of thickness and nanostructure. Unlike conventional chemical vapour deposition, where growth rate is dependent on reactant flux, ALD employs sequential surface chemical reactions to saturate a surface with a (sub-) monolayer of reactive compounds such as metal alkoxides or covalent halides, followed by reaction with a second compound such as water to deposit coatings layer-by-layer. A judicious choice of reactants and processing conditions ensures that the reactions are self-limiting, resulting in controlled film growth with excellent conformality to the substrate.

Double Injection As A Technique To Study Charge Carrier Transport And Recombination In Bulk-Heterojunction Solar-Cells, G Juska, K Arlauskas, G Sliauzys, A Pivrikas, Attila Mozer, Serdar Sariciftci, Markus Scharber, R Osterbacka

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Ambipolar charge carriermobility and recombination in bulk-heterojunction solar cells based on the mixture of regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) and 1-(3-methoxycarbonyl)propyl-1-phenyl-[6,6]-methanofullerene (PCBM) has been studied using injection current transients. The experimental results demonstrate double injection with bimolecular recombination limiting the injection current. We found that charge carrier bimolecular recombination is significantly reduced compared to Langevin recombination. We have measured the temperature and electric field dependence of the reduced bimolecular recombination coefficient and the results suggest that the electron and hole pathways are different and the recombination is controlled by the probability of the carriers to meet at the polymer/PCBM interface.

Terminator Or Super Mario: Human/Computer Hybrids, Actual And Virtual, Noreen L. Herzfeld Jan 2005

Terminator Or Super Mario: Human/Computer Hybrids, Actual And Virtual, Noreen L. Herzfeld

Theology Faculty Publications

Is a human/computer hybrid feasible: If so, in what ways would such hybridization affect our concept of what it means to be human? There are two forms of such hybridization, the actual and the virtual. Actual hybridization involves the implantation of mechanical devices in the human body. In actual hybridization the computer comes to us and to our body to enhance our functioning in our world. In virtual hybridization we go to the computer, projecting our minds into the world of cyberspace and being formed there. Perhaps the most common form of virtual hybridization is the immersion our children experience …

Sediment Loading And Water Quality Of Field Run-Off Water, J. S. Mcconnell, J. D. Mattice, B. W. Skulman, C. K. Bryant, M. Mozaffari

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Intensive tillage is commonly employed in many agronomic production systems in the United States. Tillage operations may include disking the field, re-smoothing the soil, seedbed formation, reducing the seedbeds, and shallow cultivation for weed control. Tillage practices in conjunction with rainfall have been linked to soil erosion, which may adversely affect the environment. The soil erosion dynamics of two large-scale production cotton fields that utilized both modern-conventional and conservation-tillage technology were examined. Studies were conducted in the cotton-producing region of southeast Arkansas in the Bayou Bartholomew watershed. Bayou Bartholomew is currently listed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as …

Identifying Asphalt Construction As A Point Source Emitter Of Volatile Organic Compounds Near The Louisiana State University Ozone Monitoring Station, Sean Jason Kice

LSU Master's Theses

The EPA has classified Baton Rouge as a non-attainment area for ozone pollution for many years. Since then Photochemical Assessment Monitoring Stations (PAMS) and other ozone monitoring stations around the metropolitan area have monitored for ozone, NOx, and more than 50 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which are considered precursors to ozone pollution. Traditionally, automobile engines and industrial plants and refineries have been blamed as major point sources for VOC emissions and the ozone pollution they cause. This research focuses on another possible point source for failing ozone levels at one of the ozone monitoring stations located on the campus of …
