Estimating Load-Sharing Properties In A Dynamic Reliability System, Paul H. Kvam, Edsel A. Peña Jan 2005

Estimating Load-Sharing Properties In A Dynamic Reliability System, Paul H. Kvam, Edsel A. Peña

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

An estimator for the load-share parameters in an equal load-share model is derived based on observing k-component parallel systems of identical components that have a continuous distribution function F (˙) and failure rate r (˙). In an equal load-share model, after the first of k components fails, failure rates for the remaining components change from r (t) to γ1r (t), then to γ2r (t) after the next failure, and so on. On the basis of observations on n independent and identical systems, a semiparametric estimator of the component baseline …

Assessment Of Water Conservation Technique In Rice Culture To Develop Water Use Policies, Manoch Kongchum Jan 2005

Assessment Of Water Conservation Technique In Rice Culture To Develop Water Use Policies, Manoch Kongchum

LSU Master's Theses

The rapid growth of world population has resulted in significantly increased global water demand. According to a recent report on limited water supply, conservation techniques and water use policies are needed to preserve water resources. Worldwide agriculture is the largest consumer of water, particularly for growing rice. Water use for rice production was chosen because rice will continue to be a staple crop for the majority of the world’s population and because of its pervasive use of water. Hence, this thesis was designed to investigate water conservation possibilities for rice production in two water management regimes: alternate flooding and drying, …

Nmr And Modulated Differential Scanning Calorimetry Of Adsorbed Poly(Methyl Acrylate) On Silica, Frank D. Blum, Burak Metin Jan 2005

Nmr And Modulated Differential Scanning Calorimetry Of Adsorbed Poly(Methyl Acrylate) On Silica, Frank D. Blum, Burak Metin

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The interaction between polymers and solid substrates can be studied by a variety of techniques. The results from different experiments can be affected by the nature of the polymer, surface, polymer-surface interactions and, also, the experiment. A great deal has been learned about the behavior of polymers at interfaces, but there is also much to be learned about the interactions and how they affect the physical properties of adsorbed polymers. In the present study, we report both deuterium nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) of poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) adsorbed on Cab-O-Sil silica. The focus of this …

Mole Drainage For Increased Productivity In The South West Irrigation Area, D L. Bennett, Richard George, Bill Russell Jan 2005

Mole Drainage For Increased Productivity In The South West Irrigation Area, D L. Bennett, Richard George, Bill Russell

Bulletins 4000 -

Heavy soils, with low rates of soil-water movement, such as those found in the South-West Irrigation Area (SWIA), require closely spaced (2-6 m apart) subsoil drainage systems to provide sufficient water movement to control the effects of salt-waterlogging on pastures. Such close spacing using traditional buried pipe or tile drainage systems is impractical. As a result, mole drainage systems, used in other parts of the world for over 50 years, have gained popularity in the SWIA in recent years.

This Bulletin Farmnote reports the current ‘best-bet’ mole draining technique for SWIA conditions gathered from observations over a number of years …

Gröbner Bases: A Natural Extension Of Gaussian Reduction And The Euclidean Algorithm (Abstract), Patrick Flinn Jan 2005

Gröbner Bases: A Natural Extension Of Gaussian Reduction And The Euclidean Algorithm (Abstract), Patrick Flinn

Kenneth C. Schraut Memorial Lectures

Gröbner bases can be used to answer fundamental questions concerning certain sets of polynomials. For example, when are two such sets equal? Given such a set and another polynomial, is this polynomial a member of that set? In this introduction to Gröbner bases, we motivate their salient features by considering the Euclidean algorithm and Gaussian row reduction of matrices from a slightly different point of view.

Identification of Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli in the UAE

By

Khawla Hamad Mohd Al-Areef Al-Dhaheri

Abstract

Various patho-groups of Escherichia coli strains are important causes of diarrheal diseases worldwide. Among these strains Shiga toxin producing isolates are particularly important. They are carried by various animals and upon infection, in humans, they may cause serious bloody diarrhea, and in some cases even life threatening sequels as hemolytic uremic syndrome. However, these infections are often under-diagnosed due to the fact that pathogenic strains do not differ from their nonpathogenic counterparts in characters investigated by standard microbiological techniques. Consequently, they can only be …

Symmetric Generation Of Finite Groups, MaríA De La Luz Torres Bisquertt

Theses Digitization Project

Advantages of the double coset enumeration technique include its use to represent group elements in a convenient shorter form than their usual permutation representations and to find nice permutation representations for groups. In this thesis we construct, by hand, several groups, including U₃(3) : 2, L₂(13), PGL₂(11), and PGL₂(7), represent their elements in the short form (symmetric representation) and produce their permutation representations.

A Topological Approach To Nonlinear Analysis, Wendy Ann Peske Jan 2005

A Topological Approach To Nonlinear Analysis, Wendy Ann Peske

Theses Digitization Project

A topological approach to nonlinear analysis allows for strikingly beautiful proofs and simplified calculations. This topological approach employs many of the ideas of continuous topology, including convergence, compactness, metrization, complete metric spaces, uniform spaces and function spaces. This thesis illustrates using the topological approach in proving the Cauchy-Peano Existence theorem. The topological proof utilizes the ideas of complete metric spaces, Ascoli-Arzela theorem, topological properties in Euclidean n-space and normed linear spaces, and the extension of Brouwer's fixed point theorem to Schauder's fixed point theorem, and Picard's theorem.

Evaluating Particle Swarm Intelligence Techniques For Solving University Examination Timetabling Problems, Daniel R. Fealko Jan 2005

Evaluating Particle Swarm Intelligence Techniques For Solving University Examination Timetabling Problems, Daniel R. Fealko

CCE Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the suitability and effectiveness of the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique when applied to the University Examination Timetabling problem. We accomplished this by analyzing experimentally the performance profile-the quality of the solution as a function of the execution time-of the standard form of the PSO algorithm when brought to bear against the University Examination Timetabling problem. This study systematically investigated the impact of problem and algorithm factors in solving this particular timetabling problem and determined the algorithm's performance profile under the specified test environment. Keys factors studied included problem size (i.e., number …

Optimization Of A Sequential Alignment Verification And Positioning System (Savps) For Proton Radiosurgery, Mahesh Raj Neupane

Theses Digitization Project

Functional proton-beam stereotactic radiosurgery requires sub-millimeter alignment accuracy. A patient tracking system called Sequential Alignment and Position Verification System (SAVPS) is under development at Loma Linda University Medical Center. An optical positioning system (OPS), manufactured by Vicon Peak, has been chosen to verify the correct alignment of the target with the proton beam axis. The main objective of this thesis is to optimize an existing version of SAVPS by conducting error analysis. An image processing algorithm was developed and applied to estimate the error introduced by the Patient Positioning System (PPS) in order to derive the true error of the …
