Analysis Of Perturbation-Based Testing Methodology As Applied To A Real-Time Control System Problem, Richard A. Stutler Jan 2005

Analysis Of Perturbation-Based Testing Methodology As Applied To A Real-Time Control System Problem, Richard A. Stutler

Theses and Dissertations

Perturbation analysis is a software analysis technique used to study the tail function of a program by inserting an error into an executing program using data state mutation. The impact of this induced error on the output is then measured. This methodology can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of a given test set and in fact can be used as a means to derive a test set which provides coverage for a given program. Previous research has shown that there is a "coupling effect" such that test sets that identify simple errors will also identify more complex errors. Thus …

Isolation, X-Ray Structures, And Electronic Spectra Of Reactive Intermediates In Friedel−Crafts Acylations, M. G. Davlieva, Sergey V. Lindeman, I. S. Neretin, Jay K. Kochi Jan 2005

Isolation, X-Ray Structures, And Electronic Spectra Of Reactive Intermediates In Friedel−Crafts Acylations, M. G. Davlieva, Sergey V. Lindeman, I. S. Neretin, Jay K. Kochi

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Reactive intermediates in the Friedel−Crafts acylation of aromatic donors are scrutinized upon their successful isolation and X-ray crystallography at very low temperatures. Detailed analyses of the X-ray parameters for the [1:1] complexes of different aliphatic and aromatic-acid chlorides with the Lewis acids antimony pentafluoride and pentachloride, gallium trichloride, titanium and zirconium tetrachlorides provide unexpected insight into the activation mechanism for the formation of the critical acylium carbocations. Likewise, the X-ray-structure examinations of aliphatic and aromatic acylium electrophiles also isolated as crystalline salts point to the origins of their electrophilic reactivity. Although the Wheland intermediates (as acylium adducts to arene donors) …

Characterization Of The Active Site And Insight Into The Binding Mode Of The Anti-Angiogenesis Agent Fumagillin To The Manganese(Ii)-Loaded Methionyl Aminopeptidase From Escherichia Coli, Ventris M. D'Souza, Robert S. Brown, Brian Bennett, Richard C. Holz

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

EPR spectra were recorded for methionine aminopeptidase from Escherichia coli (EcMetAP-I) samples (~2.5 mM) to which one and two equivalents of Mn(II) were added (the latter is referred to as [MnMn(EcMetAP-I)]). The spectra for each sample were indistinguishable except that the spectrum of [MnMn(EcMetAP-I)] was twice as intense. The EPR spectrum of [MnMn(EcMetAP-I)] exhibited the characteristic six-line g≈2 EPR signal of mononuclear Mn(II) with A av(55Mn)=9.3 mT (93 G) and exhibited Curie-law temperature dependence. This signal is typical of Mn(II) in a ligand sphere comprising oxygen and/or nitrogen …

Bell's Jump Process In Discrete Time, Jonathan Barrett, Matthew S. Leifer, Roderich Tumulka Jan 2005

Bell's Jump Process In Discrete Time, Jonathan Barrett, Matthew S. Leifer, Roderich Tumulka

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The jump process introduced by J. S. Bell in 1986, for defining a quantum field theory without observers, presupposes that space is discrete whereas time is continuous. In this letter, our interest is to find an analogous process in discrete time. We argue that a genuine analog does not exist, but provide examples of processes in discrete time that could be used as a replacement.

Point Evaluation And Hardy Space On A Homogeneous Tree, Daniel Alpay, Dan Volok Jan 2005

Point Evaluation And Hardy Space On A Homogeneous Tree, Daniel Alpay, Dan Volok

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We consider stationary multiscale systems as defined by Basseville, Benveniste, Nikoukhah and Willsky. We show that there are deep analogies with the discrete time non stationary setting as developed by the first author, Dewilde and Dym. Following these analogies we define a point evaluation with values in a C*–algebra and the corresponding “Hardy space” in which Cauchy’s formula holds. This point evaluation is used to define in this context the counterpart of classical notions such as Blaschke factors.

Prior Knowledge Input Method In Device Modeling, Serdar Heki̇mhan, Serdar Menekay, N. Serap Şengör Jan 2005

Prior Knowledge Input Method In Device Modeling, Serdar Heki̇mhan, Serdar Menekay, N. Serap Şengör

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The artificial neural networks are being used in modelling electronic elements and devices especially at microwave frequencies where non-linearity and dependence on frequency cannot be neglected. In this paper, instead of using artificial neural networks as a unique modelling device prior knowledge input method based on feed-forward artificial neural network structures as multi-layer perceptrons and wavelet-based neural networks is investigated. The benefits of prior knowledge input method over plain usage of artificial neural networks in modelling BJT is explored by comparing models obtained with and without prior knowledge input. The novelty of the paper is utilizing wavelet-based neural networks as …

A Survey On The H.264/Avc Standard, Nükhet Özbek, Turhan Tunali Jan 2005

A Survey On The H.264/Avc Standard, Nükhet Özbek, Turhan Tunali

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

H.264/AVC is a recently completed video compression standard jointly developed by ITU-T VCEG and ISO/IEC MPEG standards committees. The standard is becoming more popular as it promises much higher compression than that possible with earlier standards. The standard provides flexibilities in coding and organization of data which enable efficient error resilience. The increased coding efficiency offers new application areas and business opportunities. As might be expected, the increases in compression efficiency and flexibility come at the expense of increase in complexity, which is a fact that must be overcome. This paper provides an overview of the technical features of H.264 …

Control Charts Approach For Scenario Recognition In Video Sequences, Ersi̇n Elbaşi, Long Zuo, Kishan Mehrotra, Chilukuri Mohan, Pramod Varshney Jan 2005

Control Charts Approach For Scenario Recognition In Video Sequences, Ersi̇n Elbaşi, Long Zuo, Kishan Mehrotra, Chilukuri Mohan, Pramod Varshney

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A new approach, based on control charts, is presented for the task of recognition of events and scenarios in video image sequences. For each image in the sequence, low level image processing and feature extraction steps result in feature descriptors for objects of interest detected in the images. Control charts analysis is then explored to classify the nature of the activity depicted by the temporal changes in these features over the image sequence. Scenario recognition with higher accuracy is achieved using this simple approach.

Color Image Profiling Using Fuzzy Sets, Amine Ait Younes, Isis Truck, Herman Akdag Jan 2005

Color Image Profiling Using Fuzzy Sets, Amine Ait Younes, Isis Truck, Herman Akdag

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this article, a software for image indexing and retrieval is presented. The classification proposed here is based on the dominant color(s) of the images. The process consists in assigning a colorimetric profile to the image in HLS space (Hue, Lightness, Saturation). First, the definition of hue is done thanks to a fuzzy representation to take into account the non-uniformity of colors distribution. And then, lightness and saturation are represented through linguistic qualifiers also defined in a fuzzy way. Finally, the profile is built through fuzzy functions representing the membership degree of the image to different classes. In order to …

The Effects Of Shilling On Final Bid Prices In Online Auctions, Robert J. Kauffman, Charles A. Wood Jan 2005

The Effects Of Shilling On Final Bid Prices In Online Auctions, Robert J. Kauffman, Charles A. Wood

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

An increasing number of reports of online auction fraud are of growing concern to auction operators and participants. In this research, we discuss reserve price shilling, where a bidder shills in order to avoid paying auction house fees, rather than to drive up the price of the final bid. We examine the effect that premium bids have upon the final selling price, since they are linked with reserve price shill bids. We use 10,260 eBay auctions during April 2001, and identify 919 auctions involving 322 sellers and 1583 bidders involved in concurrent auctions for the exact same item. We find …

Technology Competition And Optimal Investment Timing: A Real Options Perspective, Robert J. Kauffman, X. Li Jan 2005

Technology Competition And Optimal Investment Timing: A Real Options Perspective, Robert J. Kauffman, X. Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Companies often choose to defer irreversible investments to maintain valuable managerial flexibility in an uncertain world. For some technology-intensive projects, technology uncertainty plays a dominant role in affecting investment timing. This article analyzes the investment timing strategy for a firm that is deciding about whether to adopt one or the other of two incompatible and competing technologies. We develop a continuous-time stochastic model that aids in the determination of optimal timing for managerial adoption within the framework of real options theory. The model captures the elements of the decision-making process in such a way so as to provide managerial guidance in …

A Multi-Agent Approach For Solving Optimization Problems Involving Expensive Resources, Hoong Chuin Lau, H. Wang Jan 2005

A Multi-Agent Approach For Solving Optimization Problems Involving Expensive Resources, Hoong Chuin Lau, H. Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose a multi-agent approach for solving a class of optimization problems involving expensive resources, where monolithic local search schemes perform miserably. More specifically, we study the class of bin-packing problems. Under our proposed Fine-Grained Agent System scheme, rational agents work both collaboratively and selfishly based on local search and mimic physics-motivated systems. We apply our approach to a generalization of bin-packing - the Inventory Routing Problem with Time Windows - which is an important logistics problem, and demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our approach.

Exploring Bit-Difference For Approximate Knn Search In High-Dimensional Databases, Bin Cui, Heng Tao Shen, Jialie Shen, Kian-Lee Tan Jan 2005

Exploring Bit-Difference For Approximate Knn Search In High-Dimensional Databases, Bin Cui, Heng Tao Shen, Jialie Shen, Kian-Lee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we develop a novel index structure to support effcient approximate k-nearest neighbor (KNN) query in high-dimensional databases. In high-dimensional spaces, the computational cost of the distance (e.g., Euclidean distance) between two points contributes a dominant portion of the overall query response time for memory processing. To reduce the distance computation, we first propose a structure (BID) using BIt-Difference to answer approximate KNN query. The BID employs one bit to represent each feature vector of point and the number of bit-difference is used to prune the further points. To facilitate real dataset which is typically skewed, we enhance …

Self-Assembly Of Ge Quantum Dots On Si(100)- 2×1 By Pulsed Laser Deposition, M. S. Hegazy, H. E. Elsayed-Ali Jan 2005

Self-Assembly Of Ge Quantum Dots On Si(100)- 2×1 By Pulsed Laser Deposition, M. S. Hegazy, H. E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Self-assembled Ge quantum dots are grown on Si(100)- 2×1 by pulsed laser deposition. The growth is studied by in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction and postdeposition atomic force microscopy. After the completion of the wetting layer, transient hut clusters, faceted by different planes, are observed. When the height of these clusters exceeded a certain value, the facets developed into {305} planes. Some of these huts become {305}-faceted pyramids as the film mean thickness was increased. With further thickness increase, dome clusters developed on the expense of these pyramids. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. [DOI: 10.1063/1.1949285]

Effect Of Humic Substance Photodegradation On Bacterial Growth And Respiration In Lake Water, Alexandre M. Anesio, William Granéli, George R. Aiken, David J. Kieber, Kenneth Mopper

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

This study addresses how humic substance (HS) chemical composition and photoreactivity affect bacterial growth, respiration, and growth efficiency (BGE) in lake water. Aqueous solutions of HSs from diverse aquatic environments representing different dissolved organic matter sources (autochthonous and allochthonous) were exposed to artificial solar UV radiation. These solutions were added to lake water passed through a 0.7-μm pore-size filter (containing grazer-free lake bacteria) followed by dark incubation for 5, 43, and 65 h. For the 5-h incubation, several irradiated HSs inhibited bacterial carbon production (BCP) and this inhibition was highly correlated with H2O2 photoproduction. The H2 …

Optimization Of Ultraviolet Emission And Chemical Species Generation From A Pulsed Dielectric Barrier Discharge At Atmospheric Pressure, Xinpei Lu, Mounir Laroussi Jan 2005

Optimization Of Ultraviolet Emission And Chemical Species Generation From A Pulsed Dielectric Barrier Discharge At Atmospheric Pressure, Xinpei Lu, Mounir Laroussi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

One of the attractive features of nonthermal atmospheric pressure plasmas is the ability to achieve enhanced gas phase chemistry without the need for elevated gas temperatures. This attractive characteristic recently led to their extensive use in applications that require low temperatures, such as material processing and biomedical applications. The agents responsible for the efficient plasma reactivity are the ultraviolet (UV) photons and the chemically reactive species. In this paper, in order to optimize the UV radiation and reactive species generation efficiency, the plasma was generated by a dielectric barrier discharge driven by unipolar submicrosecond square pulses. To keep the discharge …

Human Mental Models Of Humanoid Robots, Sau-Lai Lee, Ivy Yee-Man Lau, Sara Kiesler, Chi-Yue Chiu Jan 2005

Human Mental Models Of Humanoid Robots, Sau-Lai Lee, Ivy Yee-Man Lau, Sara Kiesler, Chi-Yue Chiu

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Effective communication between a person and a robot may depend on whether there exists a common ground of understanding between the two. In two experiments modelled after human-human studies we examined how people form a mental model of a robot's factual knowledge. Participants estimated the robot's knowledge by extrapolating from their own knowledge and from information about the robot's origin and language. These results suggest that designers of humanoid robots must attend not only to the social cues that robots emit but also to the information people use to create mental models of a robot.

Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Hyperbranched Polyimides Based On Silsesquioxane Nanocomposite Networks, Turgay Seçki̇n, Ahmet Gültek, Süleyman Köytepe

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A series of nanosized polyimides was successfully prepared by condensation polymerization of an octaamino-functionalized silsesquioxane and a series of commercially available dianhyride monomers. The polymerization of the octaamino silsesquioxane was carried out in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) at room temperature, giving poly(amic acid) as precursor polymers that were readily converted to the corresponding polyimides by thermal treatment in the subsequent step, which is similar to the conventional 2-stage method. The appropriate molar ratio of the silsesquioxane monomer to a dianhyride was 1:1. These polyimides are readily soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, and N,N-dimethylacetamide at room temperature, and show high …
