The 2003 Boumerdes, Algeria Earthquake: Regional Moment Tensor Analysis, Jochen Braunmiller, Fabrizio Bernardi
The 2003 Boumerdes, Algeria Earthquake: Regional Moment Tensor Analysis, Jochen Braunmiller, Fabrizio Bernardi
School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications
We used regional broadband seismograms to determine seismic moment tensors for the destructive May 21, 2003 Boumerdes (Algeria) Mw = 7.0 earthquake and its larger aftershocks. Fully automatic inversions using near-real time data provided solutions for seven Mw ≥ 4.7 events within 90 minutes after event occurrence. After adding off-line data, we manually obtained 30 solutions (Mw ≥ 3.8) from May 2003 to January 2004. All have shallow source depths (6–21 km). The median P-axis orientation (338°) of 24 thrust and four strike-slip events is consistent with Africa-Eurasia plate motion (330°). The main shock hypocenter at 8–10 …
Intelligent Autonomous Data Categorization, Edward Graham Finegan
Intelligent Autonomous Data Categorization, Edward Graham Finegan
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this research was to determine if the results of a simple comparison algorithm (SCA) could be improved by adding a hyperspace analogue to language model of memory (HAL) layer to form NCA. The HAL layer provides contextual data that otherwise would be unavailable for consideration. It was found that NCA did improve the results when compared to SCA alone. However, NCA added complexity problems that limit its practicality. The complexity of this algorithm is On3 where n is equal to the number of unique symbols in the data. While there is a relativity reasonable soft upper bound …

Phytoplankton Development Within Tidal Freshwater Regions Of Two Virginia Rivers, Usa, Harold G. Marshall, Lubomira Burchardt
Phytoplankton Development Within Tidal Freshwater Regions Of Two Virginia Rivers, Usa, Harold G. Marshall, Lubomira Burchardt
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Phytoplankton composition and the range of seasonal patterns of abundance are presented for the tidal freshwater regions in two Virginia rivers based on data accumulated monthly from 1986 through 1999. Diatoms dominated the flora during spring, summer, and fall, whereas, other taxonomic categories were more representative when the river flow rates decreased, allowing for a more stable water system and increased residency time within this tidal region during summer and early fall. This summer/fall period was associated with increased water temperatures, higher productivity rates and chlorophyll levels, increased total phytoplankton abundance and species diversity. The major components of the summer …
The Architecture Of A Proteomic Network In The Yeast, Emad Ramadan, Christopher Osgood, Alex Pothern
The Architecture Of A Proteomic Network In The Yeast, Emad Ramadan, Christopher Osgood, Alex Pothern
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
We describe an approach to clustering the yeast protein-protein inter-action network in order to identify functional modules, groups of proteins forming multi-protein complexes accomplishing various functions in the cell. We have developed a clustering method that accounts for the small-world nature of the network. The algorithm makes use of the concept of k-cores in a graph, and employs recursive spectral clustering to compute the functional modules. The computed clusters are annotated using their protein memberships into known multi-protein complexes in the yeast. We also dissect the protein interaction network into a global subnetwork of hub proteins (connected to several clusters), …
A New Search For The Neutron Electric Dipole Moment, Crystal Storey
A New Search For The Neutron Electric Dipole Moment, Crystal Storey
Theses & Honors Papers
The next generation experiments to measure the neutron EDM are being proposed at the Los Alamos National Lab. The use of spin polarized 3He is a critical component of the experiment. Thus measuring the relaxation times of polarized 3He under the actual conditions of the neutron EDM is a crucial step in the success of the experiment. This paper talks about the effort underway at Duke University to measure the relaxation time of polarized 3He at cryogenic temperatures. The applications available in LabView and ExpressPCB have been used extensively in these efforts.

On The Structure Of Graphs With Non-Surjective L(2,1)-Labelings, John P. Georges, David W. Mauro
Faculty Scholarship
For a graph G, an L(2,1)-labeling of G with span k is a mapping $L \right arrow \{0, 1, 2, \ldots, k\}$ such that adjacent vertices are assigned integers which differ by at least 2, vertices at distance two are assigned integers which differ by at least 1, and the image of L includes 0 and k. The minimum span over all L(2,1)-labelings of G is denoted $\lambda(G)$, and each L(2,1)-labeling with span $\lambda(G)$ is called a $\lambda$-labeling. For $h \in \{1, \ldots, k-1\}$, h is a hole of Lif and only if h …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the field of photolithography for micro-chip manufacturing, the photo-mask is used to print desired patterns on a proper photo-resist on wafer. The most common type of photo-mask is binary amplitude mask made an opaque layer of chrome. The principle and potential application of hybrid photo-mask with diffractive phase element and binary amplitude is presented in this dissertation paper from both numerical modeling and experimental research. The first important application is the characterization of aberration in the stepper system using hybrid diffractive photo-mask. By utilizing multiple diffractive illumination conditions, it is possible to characterize Zernike wave front aberration coefficients up …

Transform Based And Search Aware Text Compression Schemes And Compressed Domain Text Retrieval, Nan Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent times, we have witnessed an unprecedented growth of textual information via the Internet, digital libraries and archival text in many applications. While a good fraction of this information is of transient interest, useful information of archival value will continue to accumulate. We need ways to manage, organize and transport this data from one point to the other on data communications links with limited bandwidth. We must also have means to speedily find the information we need from this huge mass of data. Sometimes, a single site may also contain large collections of data such as a library database, …

In this dissertation, we describe the portable, open-source distributed simulation framework (WINDS) targeting simulations of wireless network infrastructures that we have developed. We present the simulation framework which uses modular architecture and apply the framework to studies of mobility pattern effects, routing and intrusion detection mechanisms in simulations of large-scale wireless ad hoc, infrastructure, and totally mobile networks. The distributed simulations within the framework execute seamlessly and transparently to the user on a symmetric multiprocessor cluster computer or a network of computers with no modifications to the code or user objects. A visual graphical interface precisely depicts simulation object states …
Recovery Of Hydrogen And Helium From Their Mixtures Using Metal Hydrides, Muzaffer Tonguc Oztek
Recovery Of Hydrogen And Helium From Their Mixtures Using Metal Hydrides, Muzaffer Tonguc Oztek
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Waste streams of hydrogen and helium mixtures are produced at the Kennedy Space Center during purging of the hydrogen systems and supply lines. This process is done prior to and after hydrogen servicing. The purged waste gases are lost to the atmosphere, resulting in an annual loss of 2 million and 0.1 million standard cubic meters of helium and hydrogen, respectively. Recovery of these gases will have an economic benefit. Metals, alloys, and intermetallics are known to react with hydrogen in favorable conditions; therefore, they have the possibility of serving as separating and recovery agents. In this study, Mg2Ni, VTiNi …
Messenger Rna Profiling: A Prototype Method For Body Fluidand Tissue Identification, Jane Juusola
Messenger Rna Profiling: A Prototype Method For Body Fluidand Tissue Identification, Jane Juusola
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Conventional methods of body fluid identification use labor-intensive, technologically diverse techniques that are performed in a series, not parallel, manner and are costly in terms of time and sample. Furthermore, for some frequently encountered body fluids, such as saliva or vaginal secretions, no confirmatory technique exists. Terminally differentiated cells, such as blood lymphocytes or epithelial cells lining the oral cavity, have a unique pattern of gene expression, which is evinced by the presence and relative abundance of specific mRNA species. If the type and abundance of mRNAs can be determined in a stain or tissue sample recovered at the crime …
Real-Time Realistic Rendering And High Dynamic Range Image Display And Compression, Ruifeng Xu
Real-Time Realistic Rendering And High Dynamic Range Image Display And Compression, Ruifeng Xu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the many issues that arise from the visual rendering problem. Of primary consideration is light transport simulation, which is known to be computationally expensive. Monte Carlo methods represent a simple and general class of algorithms often used for light transport computation. Unfortunately, the images resulting from Monte Carlo approaches generally suffer from visually unacceptable noise artifacts. The result of any light transport simulation is, by its very nature, an image of high dynamic range (HDR). This leads to the issues of the display of such images on conventional low dynamic range devices and the development of …
Planning And Scheduling For Large-Scaledistributed Systems, Han Yu
Planning And Scheduling For Large-Scaledistributed Systems, Han Yu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many applications require computing resources well beyond those available on any single system. Simulations of atomic and subatomic systems with application to material science, computations related to study of natural sciences, and computer-aided design are examples of applications that can benefit from the resource-rich environment provided by a large collection of autonomous systems interconnected by high-speed networks. To transform such a collection of systems into a user's virtual machine, we have to develop new algorithms for coordination, planning, scheduling, resource discovery, and other functions that can be automated. Then we can develop societal services based upon these algorithms, which hide …

Tunable Liquid Crystal Photonic Devices, Yun-Hsing Fan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Liquid crystal (LC)-based adaptive optics are important for information processing, optical interconnections, photonics, integrated optics, and optical communications due to their tunable optical properties. In this dissertation, we describe novel liquid crystal photonic devices and their fabrication methods. The devices presented include inhomogeneous polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC), polymer network liquid crystals (PNLC) and phase-separated composite film (PSCOF). Liquid crystal/polymer composites could exist in different forms depending on the fabrication conditions. In Chap. 3, we demonstrate a novel nanoscale PDLC device that has inhomogeneous droplet size distribution. In such a PDLC, the inhomogeneous droplet size distribution is obtained by exposing the …
Discrete Wave Propagation In Quadratically Nonlinear Media, Robert Iwanow
Discrete Wave Propagation In Quadratically Nonlinear Media, Robert Iwanow
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Discrete models are used in describing various microscopic phenomena in many branches of science, ranging from biology through chemistry to physics. Arrays of evanescently coupled, equally spaced, identical waveguides are prime examples of optical structures in which discrete dynamics can be easily observed and investigated. As a result of discretization, these structures exhibit unique diffraction properties with no analogy in continuous systems. Recently nonlinear discrete optics has attracted a growing interest, triggered by the observation of discrete solitons in AlGaAs waveguide arrays reported by Eisenberg et al. in 1998. So far, the following experiments involved systems with third order nonlinearities. …

Optimizing The Performance Of As-Manufactured Grazing Incidence X-Ray Telescopes Using Mosaic Detector Arrays, Martina Atanassova
Optimizing The Performance Of As-Manufactured Grazing Incidence X-Ray Telescopes Using Mosaic Detector Arrays, Martina Atanassova
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The field of X-ray astronomy is only forty (43) years old, and grazing incidence X-ray telescopes have only been conceived and designed for a little over fifty (50) years. The Wolter Type I design is particularly well suited for stellar astronomical telescopes (very small field-of-view). The first orbiting X-ray observatory, HEAO-1 was launched in 1977, a mere twenty-eight (28) years ago. Since that time large nested Wolter Type I X-ray telescopes have been designed, build, and launched by the European Space Agency (ROSAT) and NASA (the Chandra Observatory). Several smaller grazing incidence telescopes have been launched for making solar observations …
