The Acute Phase Protein Haptoglobin Is A Mammalian Extracellular Chaperone With An Action Similar To Clusterin, Justin Yerbury, Mark S Rybchyn, Simon B Easterbrook-Smith, C. Henriques, Mark Wilson Dec 2004

The Acute Phase Protein Haptoglobin Is A Mammalian Extracellular Chaperone With An Action Similar To Clusterin, Justin Yerbury, Mark S Rybchyn, Simon B Easterbrook-Smith, C. Henriques, Mark Wilson

Mark R Wilson

Haptoglobin (Hp) is an acidic glycoprotein present in most body fluids of humans and other mammals. Although the functions of Hp are not yet fully understood, the available evidence indicates that it is likely to play an important role in suppressing inflammatory responses. Some earlier work suggested that Hp might be a newly identified member of a small group of extracellular chaperones found at significant levels in human body fluids. Previously, the only well-characterized member of this group was clusterin, which shares functional similarities with the small heat-shock proteins. We report here that Hp specifically inhibited the precipitation of a …

Exploring The Persistence Of Sorted Bedforms On The Inner-Shelf Of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, Benjamin Gutierez, George Voulgaris, Robert Thieler Dec 2004

Exploring The Persistence Of Sorted Bedforms On The Inner-Shelf Of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, Benjamin Gutierez, George Voulgaris, Robert Thieler

George Voulgaris

Geological studies offshore of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina reveal subtle large-scale regions of coarse sand with gravel and shell hash (widths between 100 and 200 m and negative relief of ∼1 m) that trend obliquely to the coast. It was previously suggested that these regions serve as conduits for sand exchange between the shoreface and inner shelf during storm-associated downwelling. Consequently they were classified as rippled scour depressions. More recently, the role of alongshore flows and self-organization as a result of inhibited settling of fine sand has been discussed. In this study, 45 days of near-bed current measurements were analyzed …

Fracturing In A Reverse Drag Fold, Parashant Canyon, Az, Phillip Resor, Patrick Welsh Dec 2004

Fracturing In A Reverse Drag Fold, Parashant Canyon, Az, Phillip Resor, Patrick Welsh

Phillip G Resor

The western Grand Canyon is a natural laboratory for investigating processes of continental extension due to the great vertical exposure (> 1 km) and the relatively simple pre-extensional structure. We have undertaken a detailed field study of joint frequency in Parashant Canyon, a natural cross-section through the normal fault related Lone Mountain monocline, in order to better understand the role that joints play in accommodating extensional folding. The Lone Mountain monocline is made up of two half-monoclinal flexures: a hanging wall fold in which dips gradually increase toward the fault from a regional dip of 2° to a maximum dip …

Effect Of Channel Bifurcation On Residual Estuarine Circulation: Winyah Bay, South Carolina, Yong Kim, George Voulgaris Dec 2004

Effect Of Channel Bifurcation On Residual Estuarine Circulation: Winyah Bay, South Carolina, Yong Kim, George Voulgaris

George Voulgaris

The residual circulation pattern of Winyah Bay, the fourth largest estuary on the eastern coast of the US, is examined using stationary and shipborne current measurements during periods of low freshwater discharge. The estuary has a complex morphology with a single channel and narrow banks at the river entrance and the bay mouth, and a bifurcated channel system (main and western channels, respectively) in the middle part that appears to affect the residual circulation. Overall, the upper (single channel morphology) and middle (dual-channel morphology) parts of the estuary exhibit a baroclinic residual circulation. The presence of bifurcated channels in the …

A Solvent-Free Baeyer–Villiger Lactonization For The Undergraduate Organic Laboratory: Synthesis Of Γ-T-Butyl-Ε-Caprolactone, John Esteb, James Hohman, Diana Schlamadinger, Anne Wilson Dec 2004

A Solvent-Free Baeyer–Villiger Lactonization For The Undergraduate Organic Laboratory: Synthesis Of Γ-T-Butyl-Ε-Caprolactone, John Esteb, James Hohman, Diana Schlamadinger, Anne Wilson

John Esteb

We present an experiment involving the Baeyer–Villiger oxidation reactionfor a first-year organic chemistry class. The Baeyer–Villiger reactionprovides an efficient method to convert ketones to esters or lactones. Most organictextbooks cover the Baeyer–Villiger reaction but owing to a lack of suitableexperiments, students seldom get to explore the reaction in the undergraduateteaching laboratory. In this experiment, m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid(m-CPBA) and4-tert-butylcyclohexanone are mixed together for 30 minutes under solvent-freeconditions to produce γ-t-butyl-ε-caprolactone in 95%yield. The solvent-free nature of this procedure greatly limits the quantityof waste generated by students and keeps costs low by removing the need for solvent.

The Effect Of Residual Ca2+ On The Stochastic Gating Of Ca2+-Regulated Ca2+ Channel Models, Borbala Mazzag, Christoper J. Tignanelli, Gregory D. Smith Dec 2004

The Effect Of Residual Ca2+ On The Stochastic Gating Of Ca2+-Regulated Ca2+ Channel Models, Borbala Mazzag, Christoper J. Tignanelli, Gregory D. Smith

Borbala Mazzag

Single channel models of intracellular Ca2+ channels such as the inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate
receptor and ryanodine receptor often assume that Ca2+-dependent transitions are mediated
by a constant background [Ca2+] as opposed to a dynamic [Ca2+] representing the formation
and collapse of a localized Ca2+ domain. This assumption neglects the fact that Ca2+ released
by open intracellular Ca2+ channels may influence subsequent gating through the processes
of Ca2+-activation or Ca2+-inactivation. We study the effect of such “residual Ca2+” from
previous channel opening on the stochastic gating of minimal and realistic single channel
models coupled to a restricted cytoplasmic compartment. Using Monte-Carlo simulation …

On An Extension Of Abel-Gontscharoff's Expansion Formula, Tian-Xiao He, Leetsch C. Hsu, Peter J.-S. Shiue

Tian-Xiao He

We present a constructive generalization of Abel-Gontscharoff’s series expansion to higher dimensions. A constructive application to a problem of multivariate interpolation is also investigated. In addition, two algorithms for the constructing the basis functions of the interpolants are given.

Joint Mri Bias Removal Using Entropy Minimization Across Images, Erik G. Learned-Miller, Parvez Ahammad Dec 2004

Joint Mri Bias Removal Using Entropy Minimization Across Images, Erik G. Learned-Miller, Parvez Ahammad

Erik G Learned-Miller

The correction of bias in magnetic resonance images is an important problem in medical image processing. Most previous approaches have used a maximum likelihood method to increase the likelihood of the pixels in a single image by adaptively estimating a correction to the unknown image bias field. The pixel likelihoods are defined either in terms of a pre-existing tissue model, or non-parametrically in terms of the image's own pixel values. In both cases, the specific location of a pixel in the image is not used to calculate the likelihoods. We suggest a new approach in which we simultaneously eliminate the …

Combining Text And Audio-Visual Features In Video Indexing, Shih-Fu Chang, R. Manmatha, Tat-Seng Chua Dec 2004

Combining Text And Audio-Visual Features In Video Indexing, Shih-Fu Chang, R. Manmatha, Tat-Seng Chua

R. Manmatha

We discuss the opportunities, state of the art, and open research issues in using multi-modal features in video indexing. Specifically, we focus on how imperfect text data obtained by automatic speech recognition (ASR) may be used to help solve challenging problems, such as story segmentation, concept detection, retrieval, and topic clustering. We review the frameworks and machine learning techniques that are used to fuse the text features with audio-visual features. Case studies showing promising performance will be described, primarily in the broadcast news video domain.

A Probabilistic Upper Bound On Differential Entropy, Joseph Destefano, Erik G. Learned-Miller Dec 2004

A Probabilistic Upper Bound On Differential Entropy, Joseph Destefano, Erik G. Learned-Miller

Erik G Learned-Miller

A novel probabilistic upper bound on the entropy of an unknown one-dimensional distribution, given the support of the distribution and a sample from that distribution, is presented. No knowledge beyond the support of the unknown distribution is required. Previous distribution-free bounds on the cumulative distribution function of a random variable given a sample of that variable are used to construct the bound. A simple, fast, and intuitive algorithm for computing the entropy bound from a sample is provided.

Detecting Acromegaly: Screening For Disease With A Morphable Model, Qifeng Lu, Erik G. Learned-Miller, Angela Paisley, Peter Trainer, Volker Blanz, Katrin Dedden, Ralph Miller Dec 2004

Detecting Acromegaly: Screening For Disease With A Morphable Model, Qifeng Lu, Erik G. Learned-Miller, Angela Paisley, Peter Trainer, Volker Blanz, Katrin Dedden, Ralph Miller

Erik G Learned-Miller

Acromegaly is a rare disorder which affects about 50 of every million people. The disease typically causes swelling of the hands, feet, and face, and eventually permanent changes to areas such as the jaw, brow ridge, and cheek bones. The disease is often missed by physicians and progresses beyond where it might if it were identified and treated earlier. We consider a semi-automated approach to detecting acromegaly, using a novel combination of support vector machines (SVMs) and a morphable model. Our training set consists of 24 frontal photographs of acromegalic patients and 25 of disease-free subjects. We modelled each subject's …

Boosted Decision Trees For Word Recognition In Handwritten Document Retrieval, Nicholas R. Howe, Toni M. Rath, R. Manmatha Dec 2004

Boosted Decision Trees For Word Recognition In Handwritten Document Retrieval, Nicholas R. Howe, Toni M. Rath, R. Manmatha

R. Manmatha

Recognition and retrieval of historical handwritten material is an unsolved problem. We propose a novel approach to recognizing and retrieving handwritten manuscripts, based upon word image classification as a key step. Decision trees with normalized pixels as features form the basis of a highly accurate AdaBoost classifier, trained on a corpus of word images that have been resized and sampled at a pyramid of resolutions. To stem problems from the highly skewed distribution of class frequencies, word classes with very few training samples are augmented with stochastically altered versions of the originals. This increases recognition performance substantially. On a standard …

Inferring Information Frequency And Quality, Douglas G. Steigerwald, John Owens Dec 2004

Inferring Information Frequency And Quality, Douglas G. Steigerwald, John Owens

Douglas G. Steigerwald

We develop a microstructure model that, in contrast to previous models, allows one to estimate the frequency and quality of private information. In addition, the model produces stationary asset price and trading volume series. We find evidence that information arrives frequently within a day and that this information is of high quality. The frequent arrival of information, while in contrast to previous microstructure model estimates, accords with nonmodel-based estimates and the related literature testing the mixture-of-distributions hypothesis. To determine if the estimates are correctly reflecting the arrival of latent information, we estimate the parameters over half-hour intervals within the day. …

R. Manmatha

In this paper we describe our approach for jointly modeling the text part and the visual part of multimedia documents for the purpose of information retrieval(IR). In the prevalent state-of-the-art systems, a late combination between two independent systems, one analyzing just the text part of such documents, and the other analyzing the visual part without leveraging any knowledge acquired in the text processing, is the norm. Such systems rarely exceed the performance of any single modality (i.e. text or video) in information retrieval tasks. Our experiments indicate that allowing a rich interaction between the modalities results in signi.- cant improvement …
