Combinatorial Theorems About Embedding Trees On The Real Line, Amit Chakrabarti, Subhash Khot Oct 2005

Combinatorial Theorems About Embedding Trees On The Real Line, Amit Chakrabarti, Subhash Khot

Computer Science Technical Reports

We consider the combinatorial problem of embedding a tree metric into the real line with low distortion. For two special families of trees --- the family of complete binary trees and the family of subdivided stars --- we provide embeddings whose distortion is provably optimal, up to a constant factor. We also prove that the optimal distortion of a linear embedding of a tree can be arbitrarily low or high even when it has bounded degree.

A Quasi-Ptas For Unsplittable Flow On Line Graphs, Nikhil Bansal, Amit Chakrabarti, Amir Epstein, Baruch Schieber Oct 2005

A Quasi-Ptas For Unsplittable Flow On Line Graphs, Nikhil Bansal, Amit Chakrabarti, Amir Epstein, Baruch Schieber

Computer Science Technical Reports

We study the Unsplittable Flow Problem (UFP) on a line graph, focusing on the long-standing open question of whether the problem is APX-hard. We describe a deterministic quasi-polynomial time approximation scheme for UFP on line graphs, thereby ruling out an APX-hardness result, unless NP is contained in DTIME(2^polylog(n)). Our result requires a quasi-polynomial bound on all edge capacities and demands in the input instance. Earlier results on this problem included a polynomial time (2+epsilon)-approximation under the assumption that no demand exceeds any edge capacity (the "no-bottleneck assumption") and a super-constant integrality gap if this assumption did not hold. Unlike most …

The Structure And Components Of E-Mall Business Models, Renae Cooper, Katina Michael

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This paper is concerned with e-mall business models. The investigation defines what constitutes an e-mall, the different types of implementations, and surveys a number of established e-malls. The study looks at e-malls through the eyes of a buyer and seller and describes the different types of components available to each on e-malls including categorization, payment facilities and considerations, site linking and redirection, buyer traffic, loyalty and advertising schemes and legalities. It becomes apparent throughout the paper that e-malls use a diverse number of strategies in their implementations, and that sellers using e-malls maintain their autonomy as individual retailers. Therefore while …

Performance Investigation On Three-Classes Of Manet Routing Protocols, Mehran Abolhasan, Tadeusz A. Wysocki, Justin Lipman Oct 2005

Performance Investigation On Three-Classes Of Manet Routing Protocols, Mehran Abolhasan, Tadeusz A. Wysocki, Justin Lipman

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Routing in Ad-hoc Networks has received significant attention with a number of different routing protocols proposed in recent years. These routing protocols may be classified into three main categories: proactive, reactive and hybrid. Prior work aimed at comparing the performance of routing protocols has mainly fo cused on comparing reactive and proactive protocols [6] [4] [1]. In this paper, we present a simulation study of different routing protocols from all three categories. We also explore the benefits and performance of each routing category. Further, we present a discussion of future research directions for routing in Ad-hoc Networks.

The Behavior Of Manet Routing Protocols In Realistic Environments, K. Chin Oct 2005

The Behavior Of Manet Routing Protocols In Realistic Environments, K. Chin

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This paper presents an analysis of MANET routing protocols’ behavior in realistic channel fading scenarios. The motivation of this study was due to our previous testbed experimentations where we found that AODV and DSDV’s performance did not match simulation results, primarily due to the use of a simple radio propagation model that did not take into account transient links caused by small-scale fading. Henceforth, we extended the ns-2 simulator with a realistic radio propagation model, that incorporated Rayleigh fading, to gain insights into the impact of transient links on AODV, DSR, and DSDV’s behaviour. Our simulation studies explain each protocol’s …

Maximum Size Of Fish Caught With Standard Gears And Recreational Angling, Kevin L. Pope, Gene R. Wilde, Daryl L. Bauer Oct 2005

Maximum Size Of Fish Caught With Standard Gears And Recreational Angling, Kevin L. Pope, Gene R. Wilde, Daryl L. Bauer

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

We correlated maximum lengths of freshwater fishes captured during 10 years with standard gears (i.e., gill nets, boat electrofishers and trap nets) and angling from Nebraska water bodies to determine which methodology provided better estimates of maximum size of fishes produced within a given water body. In general, maximum length of fishes captured with standard gears was smaller than maximum length of fishes captured with angling. Although significant (based on sequential Bonferroni adjustment) correlation was found in only one of nine sport fishes assessed, all correlations were positive indicating a general trend between maximum size of fishes captured with these …

A Taxonomy Of Free Network Sniffers For Teaching And Research, Victor A. Clincy, Halaweh Abu Nael Oct 2005

A Taxonomy Of Free Network Sniffers For Teaching And Research, Victor A. Clincy, Halaweh Abu Nael

Faculty Articles

Today's networking environment has become very complex. Networks have been growing in size rapidly and have come to support more complex applications. As result, troubleshooting and maintaining networks has become cumbersome and has created the need for new specialized tools such as Network Protocol Analyzers, better known as "Network Sniffers".Network Sniffers have become critical tools in today's networking management and troubleshooting processes. They enable network managers to evaluate and examine the data running through their network by troubleshooting network performance problems and identifying certain network faults. Network Sniffers can help identify network attacks and detect security threats; they can be …

Structures And Stability Of Medium-Sized Silicon Clusters. Iii. Reexamination Of Motif Transition In Growth Pattern From Si15 To Si20, Soohaeng Yoo, Xiao Cheng Zeng Oct 2005

Structures And Stability Of Medium-Sized Silicon Clusters. Iii. Reexamination Of Motif Transition In Growth Pattern From Si15 To Si20, Soohaeng Yoo, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

It has been established from experiments that stable medium-sized ionic clusters Si15–Si20 are prolate in shape. Density-functional theories (DFTs) also predict that nearly all low-lying neutral clusters in this size range are prolate in shape. Moreover, most of them are built onto two generic structural motifs, either the tricapped-trigonal-prism (TTP) Si9 motif or the six/six Si6/Si6 (sixfold-puckered hexagonal ring Si6 plus six-atom tetragonal bipyramid Si6) motif. However, it appears that the exact location of the TTP-to-six/six motif transition is dependent on the functional (e.g., PBE or BLYP) used in the …

Renormalization-Group Analysis Of Layered Sine-Gordon Type Models, I. Nandori, Sandor Alex Nagy, Kornel Sailer, Ulrich D. Jentschura Oct 2005

Renormalization-Group Analysis Of Layered Sine-Gordon Type Models, I. Nandori, Sandor Alex Nagy, Kornel Sailer, Ulrich D. Jentschura

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We analyze the phase structure and the renormalization group (RG) flow of the generalized sine-Gordon models with nonvanishing mass terms, using the Wegner-Houghton RG method in the local potential approximation. Particular emphasis is laid upon the layered sine-Gordon (LSG) model, which is the bosonized version of the multi-flavour Schwinger model and approaches the sum of two "normal", massless sine-Gordon (SG) models in the limit of a vanishing interlayer coupling J. Another model of interest is the massive sine-Gordon (MSG) model. The leading-order approximation to the UV (ultraviolet) RG flow predicts two phases for the LSG as well as for the …

Calculation Of The One- And Two-Loop Lamb Shift For Arbitrary Excited Hydrogenic States, Andrzej Czarnecki, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Krzysztof Pachucki Oct 2005

Calculation Of The One- And Two-Loop Lamb Shift For Arbitrary Excited Hydrogenic States, Andrzej Czarnecki, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Krzysztof Pachucki

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

General expressions for quantum electrodynamic corrections to the one-loop self-energy [of order α(Zα)6] and for the two-loop Lamb shift [of order α2(Zα)6] are derived. The latter includes all diagrams with closed fermion loops. The general results are valid for arbitrary excited non-S hydrogenic states and for the normalized Lamb shift difference of S states, defined as Δn=n3ΔE(nS)-ΔE(1S). We present numerical results for one-loop and two-loop corrections for excited S, P, and D states. In particular, the normalized Lamb shift difference of S states is calculated with an uncertainty of order …

Prediction Of Sediment-Bound Nutrient Delivery From Semi-Arid California Watersheds, Emmanuel Gabet, Noah Fierer, Oliver Chadwick Oct 2005

Prediction Of Sediment-Bound Nutrient Delivery From Semi-Arid California Watersheds, Emmanuel Gabet, Noah Fierer, Oliver Chadwick

Faculty Publications

Soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) are lost from hillslopes in particulate forms through soil erosion. The fate of the eroded C (e.g., sequestration or oxidation) may affect the global C budget, and delivery of N and P to waterbodies can lead to eutrophication. Whereas the magnitude of particulate nutrient losses may be similar to or greater than dissolved losses, it is rarely estimated. We couple a sediment delivery model with measurements of C, N, and P in soil to account explicitly for hillslope sediment transport processes that yield sediment-bound nutrients to fluvial networks. The model is applied …

Review Of Lewis And Clark And The Geology Of The Great Plains And Lewis And Clark And The Geology Of Nebraska And Parts Of Adjacent States, Harmon D. Maher Jr.

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

When it comes to science in general, and the geology of the Great Plains in particular, there is arguably an imbalance between the wealth of material written for experts and the relative paucity written for the general public. These publications help correct that imbalance at a time when the various Lewis and Clark celebrations create an especially receptive and engaged audience.

Microcapsule Biosensors Based On Competitive Binding And Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer Assays, Swetha Chinnayelka Oct 2005

Microcapsule Biosensors Based On Competitive Binding And Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer Assays, Swetha Chinnayelka

Doctoral Dissertations

Fluorescent sensing systems offer the potential for minimally invasive monitoring with implantable devices, but they require carrier technologies that provide suitable immobilization, accessibility, and biocompatibility while maintaining adequate response characteristics. Towards the development of this goal, a general design of a biosensor with the capability of detecting different metabolites was investigated. The approach is based on the encapsulation of a competitive binding assay in microcapsules and monitoring the changes in fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) in the presence of analyte. To experimentally demonstrate this type of sensing system, glucose was chosen as the model target analyte. The design, fabrication, and …

Mountain Plover Population Responses To Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs In Montana, Stephen J. Dinsmore, Gary C. White, Fritz L. Knopf Oct 2005

Mountain Plover Population Responses To Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs In Montana, Stephen J. Dinsmore, Gary C. White, Fritz L. Knopf

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

We studied a local population of mountain plovers (Charadrius montanus) in southern Phillips County, Montana, USA, from 1995 to 2000 to estimate annual rates of recruitment rate (f) and population change (λ). We used Pradel models, and we modeled λ as a constant across years, as a linear time trend, as year-specific, and with an additive effect of area occupied by prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). We modeled recruitment rate (f) as a function of area occupied by prairie dogs with the remaining model structure identical to the best model used to estimate λ. Our results indicated …
