Nil Is Not Nothing: Recognition Of Chinese Network Informal Language Expressions, Yunqing Xia, Kam-Fai Wong, Wei Gao Oct 2005

Nil Is Not Nothing: Recognition Of Chinese Network Informal Language Expressions, Yunqing Xia, Kam-Fai Wong, Wei Gao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Informal language is actively used in network-mediated communication, e.g. chat room, BBS, email and text message. We refer the anomalous terms used in such context as network informal language (NIL) expressions. For example, “஧(ou3)” is used to replace “ᚒ(wo3)” in Chinese ICQ. Without unconventional resource, knowledge and techniques, the existing natural language processing approaches exhibit less effectiveness in dealing with NIL text. We propose to study NIL expressions with a NIL corpus and investigate techniques in processing NIL expressions. Two methods for Chinese NIL expression recognition are designed in NILER system. The experimental results show that pattern matching method produces …

Common Pattern Discovery Using Earth Mover's Distance And Local Flow Maximization, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo Oct 2005

Common Pattern Discovery Using Earth Mover's Distance And Local Flow Maximization, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present a novel segmentation-insensitive approach for mining common patterns from 2 images. We develop an algorithm using the earth movers distance (EMD) framework, unary and adaptive neighborhood color similarity. We then propose a novel local flow maximization approach to provide the best estimation of location and scale of the common pattern. This is achieved by performing an iterative optimization in search of the most stable flows' centroid. Common pattern discovery is difficult owing to the huge search space and problem domain. We intend to solve this problem by reducing the search space through identifying the location …

Managerial Assessments Of E-Business Investment Opportunities: A Field Study, Anandhi S. Bharadwaj, Amrit Tiwana Oct 2005

Managerial Assessments Of E-Business Investment Opportunities: A Field Study, Anandhi S. Bharadwaj, Amrit Tiwana

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Managers charged with assessing investment opportunities for information technologies such as e-business projects face considerable uncertainty in their decision-making processes. Contemporary theories of the firm and the normative prescriptions thereof emphasize the potential for such investments to augment firm-level knowledge and relational capabilities. However, prior research has not examined the relative emphases that managers place on the knowledge and relational capability-augmenting characteristics of the e-business investments. In this paper, we develop a model to assess whether managerial evaluations of e-business investment opportunities are consistent with these normative and theoretical prescriptions. A test of the model using survey data on 485 …

The National Weather Service's Polygon Method: Warning Dissemination Of The Future, Crystal L. Bergman Oct 2005

The National Weather Service's Polygon Method: Warning Dissemination Of The Future, Crystal L. Bergman

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The National Weather Service (NWS) is continuously improving its forecasting skills, but forecasters still cannot accurately predict the path of a tornado or a severe thunderstorm. The NWS has developed a new warning system in which the warned area is outlined by a polygon, not a county boundary. The polygon-waming approach is expected to significantly reduce the total square-mile area of warnings not followed by an event, called the False Alarm Area. There are three central issues concerning the failure of the polygon-warning method: I) the size of the counties impacted by a storm, 2) the impact of the new …

Sub-Femtosecond Correlated Dynamics Explored With Antiprotons, J. Ullrich, A. Dorn, Daniel Fischer, R. Moshammer, B. Najjari, Michael Schulz, A. B. Voitkiv, C. P. Welsch Oct 2005

Sub-Femtosecond Correlated Dynamics Explored With Antiprotons, J. Ullrich, A. Dorn, Daniel Fischer, R. Moshammer, B. Najjari, Michael Schulz, A. B. Voitkiv, C. P. Welsch

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ionizing collisions of antiprotons with atoms or molecules at energies between a few keV up to about one MeV provide a unique tool to explore correlated dynamics of electrons at large perturbations on a time scale between several femtoseconds (1 fs = 10-15 s) down to some tens of attoseconds (1 as = 10-18 s). Exploiting and developing many-particle imaging methods - Reaction-Microscopes - integrated into a novel ultra-low energy storage ring (USR) for slow antiprotons will enable to access for the first time fully differential cross sections for single and multiple ionization in such collisions. Moreover, the …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The identification of parasites from ancient cultures expands our list of parasites infective to extant humans. A partially mummified human body from the archeological site of Lapa do Boquete, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, was recently discovered. It was interred between 600 and 1,200 yr ago. Dietary analysis showed that the mummified body was from a society that had a mixed subsistence of agriculture and gathering of wild foods. Coprolites from the body contained numerous helminth eggs. The eggs were identified as those of Echinostoma sp. and hookworm. Hookworm infection in pre-Columbian populations is already established, but this is the first …

Multifractal Structure In Nonrepresentational Art, Jonas R. Mureika, C. C. Dyer, G. C. Cupchik Oct 2005

Multifractal Structure In Nonrepresentational Art, Jonas R. Mureika, C. C. Dyer, G. C. Cupchik

Physics Faculty Works

Multifractal analysis techniques are applied to patterns in several abstract expressionist artworks, painted by various artists. The analysis is carried out on two distinct types of structures: the physical patterns formed by a specific color (“blobs”) and patterns formed by the luminance gradient between adjacent colors (“edges”). It is found that the multifractal analysis method applied to “blobs” cannot distinguish between artists of the same movement, yielding a multifractal spectrum of dimensions between about 1.5 and 1.8. The method can distinguish between different types of images, however, as demonstrated by studying a radically different type of art. The data suggest …

Let G be a finite p-group, where p is a prime number, and aG. Denote by Cl(a) = {gag−1| gG} the conjugacy class of a in G. Assume that |Cl(a)| = p n . Then Cl(a) Cl(a−1) = {xy | x ∈ Cl(a), yCl(a−1)} is the union of at least n(p − 1) + 1 distinct conjugacy classes of G.

Induced Matter: Curved N-Manifolds Encapsulated In Riemann-Flat N+1 Dimensional Space, Harry I. Ringermacher, Lawrence R. Mead Oct 2005

Induced Matter: Curved N-Manifolds Encapsulated In Riemann-Flat N+1 Dimensional Space, Harry I. Ringermacher, Lawrence R. Mead

Faculty Publications

Liko and Wesson have recently introduced a new five-dimensional induced matter solution of the Einstein equations, a negative curvature Robertson-Walker space embedded in a Riemann-flat five-dimensional manifold. We show that this solution is a special case of a more general theorem prescribing the structure of certain N+1 dimensional Riemann-flat spaces which are all solutions of the Einstein equations. These solutions encapsulate N-dimensional curved manifolds. Such spaces are said to "induce matter" in the submanifolds by virtue of their geometric structure alone. We prove that the N-manifold can be any maximally symmetric space. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

The 7 May 2001 Induced Seismic Event In The Ekofisk Oil Field, North Sea, L. Ottemöller, H. H. Nielsen, K. Atakan, Jochen Braunmiller, J. Havskov

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

A moderate size seismic event on 7 May 2001 was strongly felt on platforms in the Ekofisk oil field, in the southern North Sea, but did not cause damage to platforms or wells. We combined near- and far-field observations to develop a consistent source model and to determine whether the event was induced. Seismic data placed the epicenter inside the Ekofisk field and suggested a shallow source depth based on spectral and moment tensor analysis. GPS data from the Ekofisk platforms displayed permanent vertical and horizontal movement due to the event. A topographic bulge in the sea bottom, revealed by …

Application Of Information-Theoretic Data Mining Techniques In A National Ambulatory Practice Outcomes Research Network, Adam Wright, Thomas N. Ricciardi, Martin Zwick

Systems Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Medical Quality Improvement Consortium data warehouse contains de-identified data on more than 3.6 million patients including their problem lists, test results, procedures and medication lists. This study uses reconstructability analysis, an information-theoretic data mining technique, on the MQIC data warehouse to empirically identify risk factors for various complications of diabetes including myocardial infarction and microalbuminuria. The risk factors identified match those risk factors identified in the literature, demonstrating the utility of the MQIC data warehouse for outcomes research, and RA as a technique for mining clinical data warehouses.

And/Or Graph And Search Algorithm For Discovering Composite Web Services, Qianhui (Althea) Liang, Stanley Y. W. Su Oct 2005

And/Or Graph And Search Algorithm For Discovering Composite Web Services, Qianhui (Althea) Liang, Stanley Y. W. Su

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a formalization of the Web Service composition problem as a search problem in an AND/OR graph, and a search algorithm for searching the graph to identify composite service(s) that satisfies a Web Service request. Given a service request that can only be satisfied by a composition of Web Services, we identify the service categories that are relevant to the request and dynamically construct an AND/OR graph to capture the input/output dependencies among the Web Services of these service categories. The graph is modified, based on the information provided in the service request. The search algorithm is then …

Dsim: A Distance-Based Indexing Method For Genomic Sequences, Xia Cao, Beng-Chin Ooi, Hwee Hwa Pang, Kian-Lee Tan, Anthony K. H. Tung Oct 2005

Dsim: A Distance-Based Indexing Method For Genomic Sequences, Xia Cao, Beng-Chin Ooi, Hwee Hwa Pang, Kian-Lee Tan, Anthony K. H. Tung

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose a Distance-based Sequence Indexing Method (DSIM) for indexing and searching genome databases. Borrowing the idea of video compression, we compress the genomic sequence database around a set of automatically selected reference words, formed from high-frequency data substrings and substrings in past queries. The compression captures the distance of each non-reference word in the database to some reference word. At runtime, a query is processed by comparing its substrings with the compressed data strings, through their distances to the reference words. We also propose an efficient scheme to incrementally update the reference words and the compressed …

Towards Semantic Service Request Of Web Service Composition, Qianhui Althea Liang, Jen-Yao Chung, Steven M. Miller Oct 2005

Towards Semantic Service Request Of Web Service Composition, Qianhui Althea Liang, Jen-Yao Chung, Steven M. Miller

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

When meeting the challenges in automatic and semi-automatic Web service composition, capturing the user's service demand and preferences is as important as knowing what the services can do. This paper discusses the idea of semantic service requests for composite services, and presents a way to model the elements of a composite service request as user preferences and constraints. The model is based on an interactive and iterative strategy meant to obtain the exact requirements from potential service consumers. The markup vocabularies and associated inference mechanism of OWL-S are used as a means to bring semantics to service requests. Language constructs …
