We combine the notion of norming algebra introduced by Pop, Sinclair and Smith with a result of Pisier to show that if A1 and A2 are operator algebras, then any bounded epimorphism of A1 onto A2 is completely bounded provided that A2 contains a norming C*-subalgebra. We use this result to give some insights into Kadison’s Similarity Problem: we show that every faithful bounded homomorphism of a C*-algebra on a Hilbert space has completely bounded inverse, and show that a bounded representation of a C-algebra is similar to a -representation precisely when the image operator algebra -norms itself. We have surveyed the ∼0.1-10 MeV nucleonˉ¹ abundances of heavy ions from ³He through Fe in 64 large solar energetic particle (LSEP) events observed on board the Advanced Composition Explorer from 1997 November through 2005 January. Our main results are (1) the 0.5-2.0 MeV nucleonˉ¹ ³He/⁴He ratio is enhanced between factors of ∼2-150 over the solar wind value in 29 (∼46%) events. (2) The Fe/O ratio in most LSEP events decreases with increasing energy up to ∼60 MeV nucleonˉ¹. (3) The Fe/O ratio is independent of CME speed, flare longitude, event size, the ³He/⁴He ratio, the pre-event Fe/O ratio, and …

Neutrion oscillations affect light-element synthesis through the v-process in supernova explosions. The 7Li and 11B yields produced in a supernova explosion of a 16.2 M ⊙ star model increase by factors of 1.9 and 1.3 in the case of the large mixing angle solution with a normal mass hierarchy of sin^2 2θ13 >~ 2x10^-3 compared with those without the oscillations. In the case of an inerted mass hierarchy or a nonadiabatic 1-3 mixing resonance, the increment of their yields is much smaller. Neutrino oscillations raise the reaction rates of charged-current v-process reactions in the region outside oxygen-rich layers. The number …

We present late-time (590-994 days) mid-IR photometry of the normal but highly reddened Type IIP supernova SN 2002hh. Bright, cool, slowly fading emission is detected from the direction of the supernova. Most of this flux appears not to be driven by the supernova event but instead probably originates in a cool, obscured star formation region or molecular cloud along the line of sight. We also show, however, that the declining component of the flux is consistent with an SN-powered IR echo from a dusty progenitor CSM. Mid-IR emission could also be coming from newly condensed dust and/or an ejecta/CSM impact, …

In this letter, the authors demonstrate isotropic Fe–Pt exchange-spring nanocomposite permanent magnets with a soft magnetic phase fraction of greater than 0.5 with a coercivity of 6.5 kOe, single-phase-like magnetic behavior, and an energy product of 25.1 MG Oe. Sub-10-nm Fe–Pt clusters are formed with compositions in the two-phase Fe3Pt and FePt regions. Intracluster structuring on a scale of a few nanometers occurs after appropriate heat treatment. This ensures full exchange coupling between the two phases, allowing greater soft magnetic phase fractions. The results provide insight into developing high energy product nanostructured permanent magnets.

We propose, develop and implement the simulation extrapolation (SIMEX) methodology for Cox regression models when the log hazard function is linear in the model parameters but nonlinear in the variables measured with error (LPNE). The class of LPNE functions contains but is not limited to strata indicators, splines, quadratic and interaction terms. The first order bias correction method proposed here has the advantage that it remains computationally feasible even when the number of observations is very large and multiple models need to be explored. Price Elasticity Reconsidered: Panel Estimation Of An Agricultural Water Demand Function, Karina Schoengold, David L. Sunding, Georgina Moreno

Using panel data from a period of water rate reform, this paper estimates the price elasticity of irrigation water demand. Price elasticity is decomposed into the direct effect of water management and the indirect effect of water price on choice of output and irrigation technology. The model is estimated using an instrumental variables strategy to account for the endogeneity of technology and output choices in the water demand equation. Estimation results indicate that the price elasticity of agricultural water demand is -0.79, which is greater than that found in previous studies.

The bird infecting viral strain H5N1, commonly known as the Avian Flu, is a highly infectious and resilient virus that can be fatal if contracted by humans. Authorities and health services have a major responsibility to citizens to respond quickly to minimize the possibility of a localized outbreak becoming a pandemic. The Avian Flu Tracker is a dynamic Location Based Service (LBS) designed to warn citizens of their proximity to potentially infectious regions. Cyclooxygenases (COXs) are of important therapeutic value as they are the target site of aspirin-like drugs. Here I report nine new COX-1 splice variants in chapter 1, which I characterized with regard to heme-binding and other properties. Inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) are co-inducible in many tissues following mitogenic and proinflammatory stimulation. In chapter 2, I investigate the physical and enzymatic properties of human COX-2 and iNOS and demonstrate that, despite reports to the contrary by another laboratory, they do not interact. Populations of Pinus ponderosa and Juniperus virginiana are expanding into semiarid Sandhills grasslands in Nebraska. To evaluate the physiological basis of their success, we measured the seasonal course of leaf gas exchange, plant water status, and carbon isotope discrimination in these two native trees and two native C4 grasses (Schizachyrium scoparium and Panicum virgatum). Compared to the trees, grasses had higher net photosynthetic rates (Anet) and water use efficiency (WUE) and more negative predawn and midday water potentials (Ψ) in June and July. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve has been extended to survival data recently, including the nonparametric approach by Heagerty, Lumley and Pepe (2000) and the semiparametric approach by Heagerty and Zheng (2005) using standard survival analysis techniques based on two different time-dependent ROC curve definitions. However, both approaches cannot adjust for the effect of covariates on the accuracy of the biomarker. To account for the covariate effect, we propose semiparametric models for covariate specific ROC curves corresponding to the two time-dependent ROC curve definitions, respectively. The long-standing problem of moving discrete solitary waves in nonlinear Schrödinger lattices is revisited. The context is photorefractive crystal lattices with saturable nonlinearity whose grand-canonical energy barrier vanishes for isolated coupling strength values. Genuinely localized traveling waves are computed as a function of the system parameters for the first time. The relevant solutions exist only for finite velocities.

This paper describes the development of a microscopic traffic simulator purposely designed for ITS researchers studying inter-vehicle communication (IVC) concepts and applications in large traffic networks. The simulator can represent real life vehicles within the simulation by using data from vehicle Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, enabling validation of theories with real vehicle data. The software is developed on top of the existing microscopic traffic simulator VISSIM with the added flexibility of modelling and efficiently handling communication between large numbers of vehicles. This along with the software architecture was discussed in detail.

The majority of today's navigation techniques for intelligent transportation systems use Global Positioning Systems (GPS) that can provide position information with bounded errors. However, because of the low accuracy and multi-path problem, it is challenging to determine a vehicle's position at lane level. With Markov-based approach based on sharing information among a group of vehicles that are traveling close to each other, the lane positions of vehicles can be found. The algorithm shows its effectiveness in both simulations and experiments with real data.

In the title electron donor–acceptor complex, C27H22N2·0.5C6Cl4O2, the p-chloranil molecule lies on a crystallographic inversion center, which is located at the center of the benzene ring. In the crystal structure, one p-chloranil molecule lies above and below the central rings of each donor group of two neighboring 1,3-bis(9H-carbazol-9-yl)propane molecules, with a ring-centroid separation of 3.444 (1) Å. The angle between the planes of the stacking rings of the carbazole and p-chloranil molecules is 3.4 (2)°.

The title compound, C33H24N8O16, was obtained as a product of the photoreaction between 1,3-di-9-anthrylpropane and tetranitromethane. The molecule occupies a special position on a twofold axis. The trinitromethyl and nitro substituents on the 9,10-dihydroacridine system are E oriented.

We present a search for supersymmetry in the R-parity violating resonant production and decay of smuons and muon sneutrinos in the channels μ̃→ χ̃10μ, μ̃→ χ̃2,3,40μ, and ν̃μ→ χ̃1,2±μ. We analyzed 0:38 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected between April 2002 and August 2004 with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The observed number of events is in agreement with the standard model expectation, and we calculate 95% C.L. limits on the slepton production cross section times branching fraction to gaugino plus muon, as a function …

Most researchers agree that Milankovitch seasonal forcing paces the ice ages but how these insolation changes are leveraged into abrupt global climate change remains unknown. Effectiveness measures provide decision makers feedback on the impact of deliberate actions and affect critical issues such as allocation of scarce resources, as well as whether to maintain or change existing strategy. Currently, however, there is no formal foundation for formulating effectiveness measures. This research presents a new framework for effectiveness measurement from both a theoretical and practical view. First, accepted effects-based principles, as well as fundamental measurement concepts are combined into a general, domain independent, effectiveness measurement methodology. Prestack depth migration (PSDM) analysis has the potential to significantly improve the accuracy of both shallow seismic reflection images and the measured velocity distributions. In a study designed to image faults in the Alvord Basin, Oregon, at depths from 25–1000 m, PSDM produced a detailed reflection image over the full target depth range. In contrast, poststack time migration produced significant migration artifacts in the upper 100 m that obscured reflection events and limited the structural interpretation in the shallow section. Additionally, an abrupt increase from ~2500 to >3000 m/s in the PSDM velocity model constrained the interpretation of the transition …

An integration of geological and geophysical techniques has been used to characterize the internal structure of the Little Valley Landslide in Draper, Utah, USA. The Little Valley Landslide is a pre-historic landslide as old as 13ka B.P. It is found to consist of chaotic and disturbed weathered volcanic units derived from Tertiary age volcanics that comprise a great portion of the Wasatch Range. Geotechnical investigations that were integrated with the geophysical results included excavation of trenches and drilling of boreholes.
