The UNLV developed TRPSEMPro software package can access engineering modeling software, ASPEN Plus through its own interface. The new interface eliminates the user interaction with the complex ASPEN Plus package and also provides input and output results for analysis purpose. The current interface will keep improving on collecting multiple scenario runs and database population.

Two separation processes, acid and plutonium separations, are near completion. The unit operations were finished while some sensitive chemical data for certain species are unknown. Graduate student, Matthew Hodges, continues on finishing those processes using dummy values for those restricted variables. Once the processes complete, researchers …

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) represents a significant portion of the total discharge from coastal aquifers through diffuse seepage and point source springs, but can be difficult to locate. SGD is important as it can be a source of nutrients to estuaries and other coastal ecosystems. In an effort to evaluate geophysical and thermal methods for detecting SGD on the Florida Gulf coast, a suite of water-borne surveys were run in conjunction with aerial thermal imagery over the lower Suwannee River and estuary in March and September 2005. Measurement Of The Inclusive Jet Cross Section Using The KT Algorithm In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.96 Tev, A. Abulencia, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cdf Collaboration

We report on a measurement of the inclusive jet production cross section as a function of the jet transverse momentum in pp̅ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV using data collected with the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab in run II, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 385 pb-1. The measurement is carried out for jets with rapidity 0.1 <∣yjet∣ < 0.7 and transverse momentum in the range 54<pTjet < 700 GeV/c. Next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions are in good agreement with the measured cross section after the necessary nonperturbative parton-to-hadron corrections are included.

Starting from a microscopic definition of an alignment vector proportional to the polarization, we discuss the hydrodynamics of polar liquid crystals with local C∞v symmetry. The free energy for polar liquid crystals differs from that of nematic liquid crystals (D∞h) in that it contains terms violating the n−n symmetry. First we show that these Z2-odd terms induce a general splay instability of a uniform polarized state in a range of parameters. Next we use the general Poisson-bracket formalism to derive the hydrodynamic equations of the system in the polarized state. The structure of …

An important class of models in causal inference are the so-called marginal structural models which model the comparison between counterfactual outcome distributions corresponding with a static treatment intervention, conditional on user supplied baseline covariates, based on observing a longitudinal data structure on a sample of n independent and identically distributed experimental units. Identification of a static treatment regimen specific outcome distribution based on observational data requires beyond the so-called sequential randomization assumption that each experimental unit has positive probability of following the static treatment regimen. The family Phycodnaviridae consists of a morphologically similar but genetically diverse group of large dsDNA viruses which infect both fresh and marine water eukaryotic algae. Two viruses, the 370 kb Chlorella NC64A virus NY-2A and the 313 kb Chlorella Pbi virus MT325, from the family Phycodnaviridae, genus Chlorovirus, were sequenced, analyzed, and compared to the prototype chlorella virus PBCV-1. The NY-2A genome, the largest chlorella viral genome sequenced to date, contains 886 open reading frames (ORFs) of 65 codons or larger and encodes 404 putative proteins and 7 tRNAs. A study of the reaction pathways of 1,1-diphenylethylene; methyleneindan; fluorenene; trans,trans-1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiene; cis,trans-1,4-diphenyl-1,3- butadiene and cis,cis-1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiene with singlet oxygen and the singlet oxygen mimic, 4-alkyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione (RTAD) has been undertaken. Comparisons of the reactivity and reaction mechanisms among the isomers and electrophiles have been conducted. Singlet oxygen exhibits significantly lower reactivity compared to RTAD. RTAD reacts with 1,1- diphenylethylene to produce 4+2/ene and 4+2/4+2 (2:1) adducts but with methyleneindan to give a complex mixture including the ene adduct. Reactions of isomeric 1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadienes with RTAD produce 4+2 adducts. The results of the studies provide …

Electric cell-substrate impedance sensing (ECIS) pioneered by Giaever and Keese is suitable for continuous, automatic and real-time cell attachment analysis. ECIS is a novel electrical method to study, in real time, many of the activities of animal cells when grown in tissue culture. These include morphological changes, cell locomotion, and other behaviors directed by the cell's cytoskeleton. One of the most direct ECIS measurements is that of the attachment and spreading behaviors of cells. This manuscript details a collaborative effort that reduced the risk of wildfire in an affluent, wildland-urban interface community in southern California while simultaneously minimizing the environmental impact to the site. FARSITE simulations illustrated the potential threat to the community of Rancho Santa Fe in San Diego County, California, where multimillion-dollar homes were located immediately above a designated open space area that consisted primarily of 60-year-old, decadent chaparral. Post-treatment fire behavior simulations demonstrated the potential ability to moderate fire behavior. Weedon Island, a peninsula located on the western inner shoreline of Tampa Bay, Florida, is the location of a collaborative geological and archaeological project that aims to relate the present day geomorphology to natural processes and human occupational activity during the middle to late Holocene. The area is known for extensive archaeological sites, which were originally investigated in the 1920s, although they have received relatively little scientific attention during most of the last century. A global compilation of 170 time-averaged volumetric volcanic output rates (Qe) is evaluated in terms of composition and petrotectonic setting to advance the understanding of long-term rates of magma generation and eruption on Earth. Repose periods between successive eruptions at a given site and intrusive:extrusive ratios were compiled for selected volcanic centers where long-term (>104 years) data were available. More silicic compositions, rhyolites and andesites, have a more limited range of eruption rates than basalts. Even when high Qe values contributed by flood basalts (9 ± 2 10[1]1 km3/yr) are removed, there is a trend in decreasing average Qe …

Ultracold highly excited atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT) are strongly coupled by the dipole-dipole interaction. We have investigated the importance of many-body effects by controlling the dimensionality and density of the excited sample. We excited three different cylindrical volumes of atoms in the MOT to Rydberg states. At small radius, where the sample is nearly one-dimensional, many-body interactions are suppressed. At larger radii, the sample becomes three-dimensional and many-body effects are apparent.

Sharp peaks in the dissociative electron attachment (DEA) cross sections of uracil and thymine at energies below 3 eV are assigned to vibrational Feshbach resonances (VFRs) arising from coupling between the dipole bound state and the temporary anion state associated with occupation of the lowest σ* orbital. Three distinct vibrational modes are identified, and their presence as VFRs is consistent with the amplitudes and bonding characteristics of the σ * orbital wave function. The pinning of size-selected AuN and NiN clusters on graphite, for N=7–100, is investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulations and the results are compared to experiment and previous work with Ag clusters. Ab initio calculations of the binding of the metal adatom and dimers on a graphite surface are used to parametrize the potentials used in the simulations. The clusters are projected normally towards a graphite surface and the value of the energy at which pinning first occurs, EP, is determined. Pinning is shown to occur when a surface defect, made by the cluster interaction, is first produced. The …

A highly optimized register allocator should provide an efficient placement of save/restore code for procedures that contain calls. This paper presents a new approach to placing callee-saved save and restore instructions that generalizes Chow's shrink-wrapping technique (Chow 1988). An efficient, profile-guided, hierarchical spill code placement algorithm is used to analyze the structure of a procedure to calculate the minimum dynamic execution count locations to place callee-saved save and restore code. The algorithm is implemented in the Gnu Compiler Collection and has been tested on the SPEC CPU2000 Integer Benchmark suite. Results show that the technique reduces the number of dynamic …

One of the main problems encountered in chemical analysis operations in the field is collecting sufficient sample from the source and transferring that sample to the measurement instrument for fast separation and identification. I have been involved in developing a field-portable gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) system with solid phase microextraction (SPME) sampling for point detection of chemical agents. The San Miguel de Allende graben, Guanajuato, Mexico, contains numerous rhyolitic volcanic ash beds. Electron microprobe and x-ray fluorescence analyses of glass shards from 14 localities, combined with mineralogic, stratigraphic, radiometric, and paleomagnetic data, allow us to correlate the ash beds (and the intervening sedimentary strata and fossils), understand the timing of volcanism, date the age of extension, and better understand the tectonic and volcanic evolution of central Mexico. Our analyses reveal that at least six separate eruptions of rhyolitic ash occurred during the Late Miocene and Pliocene (5-3 Ma) while the San Miguel Allende basin was subsiding. The fallout …

Background: New health status instruments are described by psychometric properties, such as Reliability, Effect Size, and Responsiveness. For cluster-randomized trials, another important statistic is the Intraclass Correlation for the instrument within clusters. Studies using better instruments can be performed with smaller sample sizes, but better instruments may be more expensive in terms of dollars, lost opportunities, or poorer data quality due to the response burden of longer instruments. Investigators often need to estimate the psychometric properties of a new instrument, or of an established instrument in a new setting. The cross-shore structure of subtidal flows on the inner shelf (7 to 12 m water depth) of Long Bay, South Carolina, a concave-shaped bay, is examined through the analysis of nearly 80 days of near-bed (1.7–2.2 m above bottom) current observations acquired during the spring and fall of 2001. In the spring and under northeastward winds (upwelling favorable) a two-layered flow was observed at depths greater than 10 m, while closer to the shore the currents were aligned with the wind.
