Exotic Meson Decay Widths Using Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics, Merritt S. Cook
Exotic Meson Decay Widths Using Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics, Merritt S. Cook
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Most experiments in particle physics are scattering experiments, the analysis of which leads to masses, scattering phases, decay widths and other properties of one or multi-particle systems. Until the advent of Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (LQCD) it was difficult to compare experimental results on low energy hadron- hadron scattering processes to the predictions of QCD, the current theory of strong interactions. The reason being, at low energies the QCD coupling constant becomes large and the perturbation expansion for scattering amplitudes does not converge. To overcome this, one puts the theory onto a lattice, imposes a momentum cutoff, and computes the integral …
A Multidisciplinary Approach To Reservoir Characterization Of The Coastal Entrada Erg-Margin Gas Play, Utah, Will D. Monn
A Multidisciplinary Approach To Reservoir Characterization Of The Coastal Entrada Erg-Margin Gas Play, Utah, Will D. Monn
Theses and Dissertations
World-class outcrops of an outermost erg-margin can be observed within the Middle Jurassic Entrada Sandstone near Capitol Reef National Park, Utah. These erg-margin deposits contain isolated reservoir quality sandstone bodies that transition into a muddy tidal flat facies. These high quality reservoirs are dominated by eolian-influenced facies interbedded with sandy interdune facies. They are sealed vertically by muddy and silty facies of associated tidal flat deposits that act as excellent stratigraphic traps in the subsurface. A variety of approaches were used to characterize these Entrada erg-margin reservoirs including: annotated panoramas of outcrops, measured sections, scintillometer measurements of field sections, facies …

Mineral-Scale Sr Isotopic Study Of Plagioclase In The Mafic Dikes Of The North American Wall And The Diorite Of The Rockslides, Yosemite Valley, California., Wendy Rae Nelson
Mineral-Scale Sr Isotopic Study Of Plagioclase In The Mafic Dikes Of The North American Wall And The Diorite Of The Rockslides, Yosemite Valley, California., Wendy Rae Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
The North American Wall mafic dikes and the diorite of the Rockslides mafic complex in the intrusive suite of Yosemite Valley show evidence of mixing with their host granites as well as with earlier components. Whole rock major element variation diagrams indicate the mafic rocks mixed with a more silicic component, but extrapolating to the silica end member does not yield the same result with each element. Trace element concentrations show a wide variation in concentration of Cr and Ni, with two samples showing enrichment in Cr (>300 ppm) and Ni (~44 ppm) compared to other samples (Cr =13-94 …

The Two-Sample Problem For Failure Rates Depending On A Continuous Mark: An Application To Vaccine Efficacy, Peter B. Gilbert, Ian W. Mckeague, Yanqing Sun
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
The efficacy of an HIV vaccine to prevent infection is likely to depend on the genetic variation of the exposing virus. This paper addresses the problem of using data on the HIV sequences that infect vaccine efficacy trial participants to 1) test for vaccine efficacy more powerfully than procedures that ignore the sequence data; and 2) evaluate the dependence of vaccine efficacy on the divergence of infecting HIV strains from the HIV strain that is contained in the vaccine. Because hundreds of amino acid sites in each HIV genome are sequenced, it is natural to treat the divergence (defined in …

Genome Scanning Methods For Comparing Sequences Between Groups, With Application To Hiv Vaccine Trials, Peter B. Gilbert, Chunyuan Wu, David V. Jobes
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Consider a placebo-controlled preventive HIV vaccine efficacy trial. An HIV amino acid sequence is measured from each volunteer who acquires HIV, and these sequences are aligned together with the reference HIV sequence represented in the vaccine. We develop genome scanning methods to identify HIV positions at which the amino acids in sequences from infected vaccine recipients tend to be more divergent from the corresponding reference amino acid than the amino acids in sequences from infected placebo recipients. We consider five two-sample test statistics, based on Euclidean, Mahalanobis, and Kullback-Leibler divergence measures. Weights are incorporated to reflect biological information contained in …

Social Sustainability Of Hybrid Electricity Generation Systems In Mexico, Pablo Federico Blackmore
Social Sustainability Of Hybrid Electricity Generation Systems In Mexico, Pablo Federico Blackmore
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis tried to determine the socioeconomic contributions of a renewable-hybrid energy system in San Juanico, Mexico. It also tried to analyze if the hybrid system was designed based on sustainable development principles. A survey of 91 electrified homes was conducted in San Juanico to gather information on consumer satisfaction and data analyzed using simple means and group mean comparisons, with suitable tests as needed. A binomial probit model for two dependent variables was applied to survey data. An energy price-comparison exercise was conducted as well. Findings showed the hybrid system had suffered from weak institutional frameworks, low community participation …
Investigation Of Copper Contamination And Corrosion Scale Mineralogy In Aging Drink Water Distributions Systems, Nadja F. Turek
Investigation Of Copper Contamination And Corrosion Scale Mineralogy In Aging Drink Water Distributions Systems, Nadja F. Turek
Theses and Dissertations
Research has shown higher levels of copper appear in drinking water conveyed through relatively new copper piping systems; older piping systems typically deliver lower copper levels in their drinking water. This research contributes field data from a real drinking water distribution system, providing a better understanding of this phenomenon, as it relates to treatment considerations and compliance with the Lead and Copper Rule. Copper pipes and copper levels were sampled from drinking water taps of 16 buildings with pipes ranging in age from less than 1 to 48 years. Water samples from each building were collected before and following a …
Backward Amplification And Beam Cleanup Of A Raman Fiber Laser Oscillator Using A Multi-Mode Graded Index Fiber Amplifier, Jesse D. S. Morgan Iii
Backward Amplification And Beam Cleanup Of A Raman Fiber Laser Oscillator Using A Multi-Mode Graded Index Fiber Amplifier, Jesse D. S. Morgan Iii
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis tested a CW fiber-based Raman amplifier implemented in a backward pumped geometry. To create a seed for the amplifier, a CW Nd:YAG laser operating at 1.064µm was used to pump a 50µm multimode graded index fiber using fiber Bragg gratings to create a Raman Fiber Laser (RFL) Oscillator with a Stokes beam at 1.116µm. The Stokes beam was then used to seed two lengths, 5.3km and 2.5km, of 50µm multimode graded index fiber. The fiber amplifier was pumped by a second CW Nd:YAG laser in the backward geometry. Spectral data taken for both fibers indicated that the backward …
Unresolved Problems Involving The Hydrogeology And Sequence Stratigraphy Of The Wasatch Plateau Based On Mapping Of The Wattis 7.5 Minute Quadrangle, Carbon And Emery Counties, Utah: Insights Gained From A New Geologic Map, David O. Alderks
Theses and Dissertations
The Wattis 7.5 Minute Quadrangle is located in central Utah, in the transition zone between the Basin and Range province and the Colorado plateau. Two small grabens, located in the quadrangle, are the easternmost evidence of Basin and Range faulting. Sedimentary units exposed are mainly Cretaceous in age and deposited in the Western Cretaceous Interior Seaway. This area is of economical importance due to its large coal deposits, coal bed methane, and groundwater. The Wattis Quadrangle provided an ideal opportunity to test, at a small scale, the applicability of a new groundwater model for stratified mountainous terranes. Water samples had …
Substrate Rigidity Regulates The Formation And Maintenance Of Tissues, Nancy Burnham, Wei-Hui Guo, Margo Frey, Yu-Li Wang
Substrate Rigidity Regulates The Formation And Maintenance Of Tissues, Nancy Burnham, Wei-Hui Guo, Margo Frey, Yu-Li Wang
Nancy A. Burnham
The ability of cells to form tissues represents one of the most fundamental issues in biology. However, it is unclear what triggers cells to adhere to one another in tissues and to migrate once a piece of tissue is planted on culture surfaces. Using substrates of identical chemical composition but different flexibility, we show that this process is controlled by substrate rigidity: on stiff substrates, cells migrate away from one another and spread on surfaces, whereas on soft substrates they merge to form tissue-like structures. Similar behavior was observed not only with fibroblastic and epithelial cell lines but also explants …

Rapid, Sequence-Specific Detection Of Unpurified Pcr Amplicons Via A Reusable, Electrochemical Sensor, Rebecca Lai, Eric T. Hagally, Sang-Ho Lee, H. T. Soh, Kevin W. Plaxco, Alan J. Heeger
Rebecca Lai Publications
We report an electrochemical method for the sequence-specific detection of unpurified amplification products of the gyrB gene of Salmonella typhimurium. Using an asymmetric PCR and the electrochemical E-DNA detection scheme, single-stranded amplicons were produced from as few as 90 gene copies and, without subsequent purification, rapidly identified. The detection is specific; the sensor does not respond when challenged with control oligonucleotides based on the gyrB genes of either Escherichia coli or various Shigella species. In contrast to existing sequence-specific optical- and capillary electrophoresis- based detection methods, the E-DNA sensor is fully electronic and requires neither cumbersome, expensive optics nor …

Fabrication Of Nanopillars By Nanosphere Lithography, Chin Li Cheung, R. J. Nikolic, C. E. Reinhardt, T. F. Wang
Barry Chin Li Cheung Publications
A low cost nanosphere lithography method for patterning and generation of semiconductor nanostructures provides a potential alternative to the conventional top-down fabrication techniques. Forests of silicon pillars of sub-500 nm diameter and with an aspect ratio up to 10 were fabricated using a combination of the nanosphere lithography and deep reactive ion etching techniques. The nanosphere etch mask coated silicon substrates were etched using oxygen plasma and a timemultiplexed “Bosch” process to produce nanopillars of different length, diameter and separation. Scanning electron microscopy data indicate that the silicon etch rates with the nanoscale etch masks decrease linearly with increasing aspect …

Two different polymers, with large local electric dipoles, are compared: copolymers of polyvinylidene fluoride with trifluoroethylene [P(VDF-TrFE, 70%:30%)] and polymethylvinylidenecyanide (PMVC). While the different local point group symmetries play a key role, both crystalline polymers exhibit intra-molecular band structure, though the Brillouin zone critical points differ.
Development Of A Three-Dimensional Air Blast Propagation Model Based Upon The Weighted Average Flux Method, Stephen R. Mchale
Development Of A Three-Dimensional Air Blast Propagation Model Based Upon The Weighted Average Flux Method, Stephen R. Mchale
Theses and Dissertations
Accurate numerical modeling of complex, multi-dimensional shock propagation is needed for many Department of Defense applications. A three-dimensional code, based upon E.F. Toro's weighted average flux (WAF) method has been developed, tested, and validated. Code development begins with the introduction and application of all techniques in a single dimension. First-order accuracy is achieved via Godunov's scheme using an exact Riemann solver. Adaptive techniques, which employ approximate solutions, are implemented to improve computational efficiency. The WAF method produces second-order accurate solutions, but introduces spurious oscillations near shocks and contact discontinuities. Total variation diminishing (TVD) flux and weight limiting schemes are added …
Assessing The Potential For Improved Scramjet Performance Through Application Of Electromagnetic Flow Control, Martin F. Lindsey
Assessing The Potential For Improved Scramjet Performance Through Application Of Electromagnetic Flow Control, Martin F. Lindsey
Theses and Dissertations
Hypersonic flight using scramjet propulsion bridges the gap between turbojets and rockets. Recent efforts focus on magnetogasdynamic (MGD) flow control to mitigate the problems of high thermomechanical loads and low efficiencies associated with scramjets. This research is the first flight-scale, three-dimensional computational analysis of a realistic scramjet to assess how MGD flow control improves scramjet performance. Developing a quasi-one dimensional design tool culminated in the first open source scramjet geometry. This geometry was tested with the Air Force Research Laboratory's electromagnetic computational code. To increase fidelity, an algorithm was developed to incorporate thermochemistry, resulting in the only open-source model of …
Modeling Study To Quantify The Benefits Of Groundwater Contaminant Source Remediation, David E. Wagner
Modeling Study To Quantify The Benefits Of Groundwater Contaminant Source Remediation, David E. Wagner
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to quantify the benefits of groundwater contaminant source remediation by using a model to simulate how reduction of source mass was related to reduction of contaminant concentration at a receptor. This thesis sought to answer three research questions: (1) how are contaminant source mass reduction and reduction of mass flux leaving the source-zone related; (2) how can we quantify the effect of the important natural attenuation processes that act upon the dissolved contaminant as it travels from the source zone to downgradient receptors, and (3) under specified site conditions, what is the maximum contaminant …
Efficient And Accurate Computation Of Elastic Cross Sections In The Single-Level Breit-Wigner Resonance Region, Edward L. Hobbs
Efficient And Accurate Computation Of Elastic Cross Sections In The Single-Level Breit-Wigner Resonance Region, Edward L. Hobbs
Theses and Dissertations
The use of piecewise cubic Hermite polynomials to approximate resonance region cross sections provides a means to accomplish the same task with increased accuracy and fewer points that require exact cross section calculation. Once the derivative of the cross section formula is derived and the interpolating cubic is appropriately shifted and scaled for numerical stability, use of the piecewise cubic Hermite polynomial is easily inserted into computer codes that depend on cross section calculation in the resonance energy region.
Comparison Of Climatological Optical Turbulence Profiles To Standard, Statistical And Numerical Models Using Heleeos, Liesebet E. Gravley
Comparison Of Climatological Optical Turbulence Profiles To Standard, Statistical And Numerical Models Using Heleeos, Liesebet E. Gravley
Theses and Dissertations
Optical turbulence within earth’s atmosphere plays a significant role in electromagnetic radiation propagation from a high energy laser. The index of refraction structure constant, Cn2, characterizes turbulent spatial fluctuations due to temperature gradients. These changes in the index of refraction affect the intensity of the laser wave front on its intended target. It is important to characterize this parameter throughout the atmosphere, the boundary layer and above, for its applications regarding the Airborne Laser (ABL) and the Advanced Tactical Laser (ATL). There are several ways to obtain values of optical turbulence, including standard and statistical models, physically-based numerical models, and …
The Violation Of Bell's Inequality In A Deterministic But Nonlocal Model, Stephanie Allred Magleby
The Violation Of Bell's Inequality In A Deterministic But Nonlocal Model, Stephanie Allred Magleby
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the violation of Bell's Inequality through the use of nonlocal measurement schemes as encapsulated in a quasi-deterministic toy model. This toy model, called the Q Box, is reminiscent of Mermin's Box in that it describes a system that appears to be deterministic yet produces the statistics of a quantum type system. [1] The workings of the Q Box are detailed both as a thought experiment and as a computer simulation. Nonlocal measurement protocols similar to those which generate a violation of Bell's Inequality in the Q Box are also applied to Mermin's Box, with comparable results. [1] …

Tuning Supported Catalyst Reactivity With Dendrimer-Templated Pt-Cu Nanoparticles, Natalie N. Hoover, Bethany J. Auten, Bert D. Chandler
Chemistry Faculty Research
The effects of particle composition on heterogeneous catalysis were studied using dendrimer-encapsulated nanoparticles (DENs) as precursors to supported Pt-Cu catalysts. Bimetallic Pt-Cu DENs with varying Pt/Cu ratios were prepared in an anaerobic aqueous solution and deposited onto a high-purity commercial alumina support. The dendrimer template was then thermally removed to yield supported nanoparticle catalysts, which were studied with toluene hydrogenation and CO oxidation catalysis as well as infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed CO. Incorporating Cu into Pt nanoparticles had opposite effects on the two test reactions. Cu acted as a mild promoter for CO oxidation catalysis, and the promoting effect was …

γ Cas is an unusual classical Be star for which the optical-band and hard X-ray fluxes vary on a variety of timescales. We report results of a 9 yr monitoring effort on this star with a robotic ground-based (APT) telescope in the B, V filter system, as well as simultaneous observations in 2004 November with this instrument and the RXTE. Our observations disclosed no correlated optical response to the rapid X-ray flares in this star, nor did the star show any sustained flux changes any time during two monitored nights in either wavelength regime. Consistent with an earlier study by …

We present the centrality-dependent measurement of multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions of charged particles and photons in Au+Au collisions at √sNN=62.4 GeV. The charged particles and photons are measured in the pseudorapidity region 2.9≤η≤3.9 and 2.3≤η≤3.7, respectively. We have studied the scaling of particle production with the number of participating nucleons and the number of binary collisions. The photon and charged particle production in the measured pseudorapidity range has been shown to be consistent with energy-independent limiting fragmentation behavior. Photons are observed to follow a centrality-independent limiting fragmentation behavior, while for charged particles it is centrality dependent. We have carried out …
Asymptotic Stability Of A Fluid-Structure Semigroup, George Avalos
Asymptotic Stability Of A Fluid-Structure Semigroup, George Avalos
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
The strong stability problem for a fluid-structure interactive partial differential equation (PDE) is considered. The PDE comprises a coupling of the linearized Stokes equations to the classical system of elasticity, with the coupling occurring on the boundary interface between the fluid and solid media. It is now known that this PDE may be modeled by a $C_{0}$-semigroup of contractions on an appropriate Hilbert space. However, because of the nature of the unbounded coupling between fluid and structure, the resolvent of the semigroup generator will \emph{not} be a compact operator. In consequence, the classical solution to the stability problem, by means …
On The Equivalence Of Case-Crossover And Time Series Methods In Environmental Epidemiology, Yun Lu, Scott L. Zeger
On The Equivalence Of Case-Crossover And Time Series Methods In Environmental Epidemiology, Yun Lu, Scott L. Zeger
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
Time series and case-crossover methods are often viewed as competing alternatives in environmental epidemiologic studies. Several recent studies have compared the time series and case-crossover methods. In this paper, we show that case-crossover using conditional logistic regression is a special case of time series analysis when there is a common exposure such as in air pollution studies. This equivalence provides computational convenience for case-crossover analyses and a better understanding of time series models. Time series log-linear regression accounts for over-dispersion of the Poisson variance, while case-crossover analyses typically do not. This equivalence also permits model checking for case-crossover data using …

Little is known of the mating system of the swift fox or how it compares to other socially monogamous mammals. In a 4-year study of 188 swift foxes, we used microsatellite analysis at 11 loci along with spatial observations to investigate swift fox mating strategies. The mating strategies used by swift foxes were highly diverse. Previous field observations have indicated that the swift fox is socially monogamous. However, we found that extrapair mating was a common breeding strategy; 52% of offspring were sired by a male that was not the mate of their mother. There was also variation in the …
Development Of A New Deer Repellent For The Protection Of Forest Resources, Bruce A. Kimball, Dale L. Nolte
Development Of A New Deer Repellent For The Protection Of Forest Resources, Bruce A. Kimball, Dale L. Nolte
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
We have identified hydrolyzed casein as a promising repellent for minimizing damage to forest resources inflicted by browsing ungulates. Eight and twelve percent hydrolyzed casein formulations prepared in water with a latex-based agricultural sticker significantly reduced browse damage by captive black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) to western redcedar (Thuja plicata) saplings. These repellent formulations can be prepared by the user at significant cost savings versus commercial products.
