Threading And Autodocumenting News Videos: A Promising Solution To Rapidly Browse News Topics, Xiao Wu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Qing Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper describes the techniques in threading and autodocumenting news stories according to topic themes. Initially, we perform story clustering by exploiting the duality between stories and textual-visual concepts through a co-clustering algorithm. The dependency among stories of a topic is tracked by exploring the textual-visual novelty and redundancy of stories. A novel topic structure that chains the dependencies of stories is then presented to facilitate the fast navigation of the news topic. By pruning the peripheral and redundant news stories in the topic structure, a main thread is extracted for autodocumentary

Mercury Concentrations In South Texas Game Fishes, E. Anthony Reisinger Mar 2006

Mercury Concentrations In South Texas Game Fishes, E. Anthony Reisinger

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Mercury (Hg) is one of the most ubiquitous and controversial metals in the world primarily due to the toxicity of the organic form of the metal, methylmercury (MeHg). MeHg is a neurotoxin at high levels, known to manifest its effects on humans primarily through consumption of certain fish and marine mammals, which tend to bioaccumulate MeHg in their tissues over time. Increased fish consumption and, thus, mercury intake in residents of coastal areas necessitates a better awareness of MeHg content in game fish species, thus the subject of this study.

Three hundred thirty-nine tissue samples were taken from 19 south …

Motion Of An Electron From A Point Source In Parallel Electric And Magnetic Fields, Christian Bracher, John B. Delos Mar 2006

Motion Of An Electron From A Point Source In Parallel Electric And Magnetic Fields, Christian Bracher, John B. Delos

Arts & Sciences Articles

Negative ions undergoing near-threshold photodetachment in a weak laser field provide an almost pointlike, isotropic source of low-energy electrons. External fields exert forces on the emitted coherent electron wave and direct its motion. Here, we examine the spatial distribution of photodetached electrons in uniform, parallel electric and magnetic fields. The interplay of the electric and magnetic forces leads to a surprising intricate shape of the refracted electron wave, and mutiple interfering trajectories generate complex fringe patterns in the matter wave. The exact quantum solution is best understood in terms of the classical electron motion.

Nonlinear Dynamics Derived From The Oxyhalogen Oxidation Of Selected Organosulfur Compounds, Edward Chickwana Mar 2006

Nonlinear Dynamics Derived From The Oxyhalogen Oxidation Of Selected Organosulfur Compounds, Edward Chickwana

Dissertations and Theses

Structure, stability, kinetics and mechanisms of oxidation of some physiologically important organosulfur compounds were studied and the results obtained show that oxidation occurs mainly at the reactive sulfur center of the molecules. These results not only display the usual S-oxygenation pathways that have been observed with most thiocarbamides, but also show dimerization and cyclization.

The oxidation of guanylthiourea, GTU, was studied in the presence of mildly acidic iodate and the strong oxidants bromate and bromine. The GTU reaction dynamics with iodate show clock reaction characteristics and oligooscillatory formation of iodine both in excess oxidant and reductant. The major oxidation product …

Preparation Of Silica-Coated Lanthanum-Strontium Manganite Particles With Designable Curie Point, For Application In Hyperthermia Treatments, Vuk Uskoković, Aljoša Košak, Miha Drofenik

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Silica-coated lanthanum–strontium manganite particles with La0.76Sr0.24MnO3+δ stoichiometric formula, exhibiting Curie temperature at ∼40°C, were prepared by using a traditional solid-state method of synthesis of magnetic ceramic particles, followed by milling and a low-temperature coating procedure in an aqueous alcoholic alkali medium. The properties of the obtained material establish it as a potential candidate for self-regulated power-absorbing and temperature-controlling materials in hyperthermia treatments. Moreover, core-comprising LaSr–manganites with different stoichiometries, ranging from La0.5Sr0.5MnO3+δ to LaMnO3+δ, were synthesized, with magnetic and structural properties examined thereof. Herein reported findings can potentially be …

Caps: Energy-Efficient Processing Of Continuous Aggregate Queries In Sensor Networks, Wen Hu, Archan Misra, Rajiv Shorey Mar 2006

Caps: Energy-Efficient Processing Of Continuous Aggregate Queries In Sensor Networks, Wen Hu, Archan Misra, Rajiv Shorey

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we design and evaluate an energy efficient data retrieval architecture for continuous aggregate queries in wireless sensor networks. We show how the modification of precision in one sensor affects the sample-reporting frequency of other sensors, and how the precisions of a group of sensors may be collectively modified to achieve the target quality of information (QoI) with higher energy-efficiency. The proposed collective adaptive precision setting (CAPS) architecture is then extended to exploit the observed temporal correlation among successive sensor samples for even greater energy efficiency. Detailed simulations with synthetic and real data traces demonstrate how the combination …

Agility Measurement Index: A Metric For The Crossroads Of Software Development Methodologies, Subhajit Datta

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software engineering's journey to maturity has been marked by the advent of different development methodologies. While each paradigm has its context and cognoscenti, project teams are often faced with the choice of one approach over another in the grind of delivering software on time and within budget. In this paper, we briefly review the three major techniques of addressing enterprise software development, namely the Waterfall, Unified and Extreme styles. The metric Agility Measurement Index is then proposed, which helps organizations choose the methodology that best suites a particular project.

A Hybrid Scatter Search/Electromagnetism Meta-Heuristic For Project Scheduling, Dieter Debels, Bert De Reyck, Roel Leus, Mario Vanhoucke Mar 2006

A Hybrid Scatter Search/Electromagnetism Meta-Heuristic For Project Scheduling, Dieter Debels, Bert De Reyck, Roel Leus, Mario Vanhoucke

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In the last few decades, several effective algorithms for solving the resource-constrained project scheduling problem have been proposed. However, the challenging nature of this problem, summarised in its strongly NP-hard status, restricts the effectiveness of exact optimisation to relatively small instances. In this paper, we present a new meta-heuristic for this problem, able to provide near-optimal heuristic solutions for relatively large instances. The procedure combines elements from scatter search, a generic population-based evolutionary search method, and from a recently introduced heuristic method for the optimisation of unconstrained continuous functions based on an analogy with electromagnetism theory. We present computational …

Accurate Evolutions Of Orbiting Black-Hole Binaries Without Excision, M. Campanelli, C. O. Lousto, P. Marronetti, Z. Zlochower

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present a new algorithm for evolving orbiting black-hole binaries that does not require excision or a corotating shift. Our algorithm is based on a novel technique to handle the singular puncture conformal factor. This system, based on the Baumgarte-Shapiro-Shibata-Nakamura formulation of Einstein’s equations, when used with a ‘‘precollapsed’’ initial lapse, is nonsingular at the start of the evolution and remains nonsingular and stable provided that a good choice is made for the gauge. As a test case, we use this technique to fully evolve orbiting black-hole binaries from near the innermost stable circular orbit regime. We show fourth-order convergence …

A Participatory Approach To Learning Sustainability Feb 2006

A Participatory Approach To Learning Sustainability

Sandra Wooltorton

I contend that for progress towards a sustainable future, we need an understanding of sustainability as having a core of reconnective learning as an inbuilt ‘driver’. Many writers such as Sterling (2001: 19) call for the elaboration of a new, lived paradigm of sustainable education and learning sustainability. In this chapter, I use notions of primary and secondary meaning and Heron’s (1996) and Reason’s (2004) framework of experiential, presentational, propositional and practical knowledge to propose a transformative, reconnective process for learning sustainability. I articulate a holistic, relational ontology and a participatory epistemology as the basis of the participatory approach. The …

Serial Ruptures Of The San Andreas Fault, Carrizo Plain, California, Revealed By Three-Dimensional Excavations, Jing Liu-Zeng, Yann Klinger, Kerry Sieh, Charles Rubin, Gordon Seitz

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

It is poorly known if fault slip repeats regularly through many earthquake cycles. Well‐documented measurements of successive slips rarely span more than three earthquake cycles. In this paper, we present evidence of six sequential offsets across the San Andreas fault at a site in the Carrizo Plain, using stream channels as piercing lines. We opened a latticework of trenches across the offset channels on both sides of the fault to expose their subsurface stratigraphy. We can correlate the channels across the fault on the basis of their elevations, shapes, stratigraphy, and ages. The three‐dimensional excavations allow us to locate accurately …

Some New Methodologies For Pattern Recognition Aided By Self-Organizing Maps., Arijit Laha Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In this thesis we develop several techniques for performing different pattern recognition tasks. In particular, the pattern recognition tasks considered here are classification and vector quantization. We propose several methods for designing classifiers and address various issues involved in the task. For vector quantization, we develop a method for image compression with superior psychovisual reproduction quality. We also propose a method for fast codebook search in a vector quantizer. We exploit different properties of Self-organizing Map (SOM) network for developing these methods. Along with SOM, we also use fuzzy sets theory and Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence to design classi- fiers …

The Complex Of Pasp And Tungstate As Inhibitors Of Cupronickel B10′S Corrosion In 3% Nacl Solution, Qun-Jie Xu

Journal of Electrochemistry

AC impedance and polarization curve measurements were conducted to study the effects of environ-ment-friendly inhibitors PASP,Na_(2)WO_(4)and their complexes on the corrosion of cupronickel B10 in 3%NaCl solution. The results indicate that PASP or Na_(2)WO_(4)alone does inhibit the corrosion of B10,and most effectiveconcentrations are 40 mg/L and 60 mg/L for PASP and Na_(2)WO_(4),respectively.With the total concentration of 40mg/L for the complex inhibitors, the optimum complex ratio of PASP to Na_(2)WO_(4)was 3:1.The complex of such a combination showed a significantly synergetic inhibition effect on the corrosion of B10.

Creation Of Crm Selection Methodology For The Aerospace & Defense Industry, Reggie Arsenault Feb 2006

Creation Of Crm Selection Methodology For The Aerospace & Defense Industry, Reggie Arsenault

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The Aerospace and Defense Industry is rebounding from one of the worst financial downturns in the history of the market. What has emerged is a realization that the future for Aerospace and Defense manufacturing requires a focus on “services†versus supplying high quality products alone. In order to support such a complex offering of products and services, manufacturing organizations in the Aerospace and Defense Industry must migrate to a customer-centric business structure within their people, processes, and tools. To support the shift, companies must deploy a robust, enterprise, CRM (Customer Relationship Management) technology. The difficulty is in the selection process …

Synthesis And Properties Of Metallic Technetium And Technetium - Zirconium Alloys As A Radioactive Storage Waste Form To Stabilize The Technetium Waste Stream Of The Urex+1 Process, Frederic Poineau, Thomas Hartmann, Kenneth Czerwinski Feb 2006

Synthesis And Properties Of Metallic Technetium And Technetium - Zirconium Alloys As A Radioactive Storage Waste Form To Stabilize The Technetium Waste Stream Of The Urex+1 Process, Frederic Poineau, Thomas Hartmann, Kenneth Czerwinski

Waste Forms Campaign (TRP)

In the AFCI program the UREX+1 process is proposed as one of the most promising technique to separate TRU (transuranic elements) form LWR spent nuclear fuel in the years to come. The application of UREX+1 results in good separation of the 5f-transuranics from the 4f-lanthanides, reduced waste volumes by eliminating the uranium content, and reduced waste package costs. Technetium-99 will be separated together with uranium and iodine within the first process steps. After the separation of uranium, technetium and iodine must be immobilized by their incorporation in a suitable waste storage form. Based on recent activities within the AFCI community, …

Mechanism Of Self Discharge Performance Improvement In The Ni-Mh Batteries With Naoh Electrolyte, Xiao-Feng Li Feb 2006

Mechanism Of Self Discharge Performance Improvement In The Ni-Mh Batteries With Naoh Electrolyte, Xiao-Feng Li

Journal of Electrochemistry

The self-discharge performance and charge efficiency at 60 ℃ for Ni-MH battery can be markedly enhanced by using NaOH electrolyte instead of KOH electrolyte. Both the results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry tests indicate that the separation of H_2 from the negative electrode may be partly blocked in the former because of the change of the adsorption/desorption behavior of H on the surface of the negative electrode, thus results in an improvement of self-discharge performance of the battery.

Oxygen Enrichment Effect Of Ceo_2 To The Cathode Performance Of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell, Xiang-Li Hou, Hong-Feng Xu, Jian-Hua Dong, Xin Sun Feb 2006

Oxygen Enrichment Effect Of Ceo_2 To The Cathode Performance Of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell, Xiang-Li Hou, Hong-Feng Xu, Jian-Hua Dong, Xin Sun

Journal of Electrochemistry

CeO_2 was added to Pt/C catalyst in the cathode of PEMFC by both sol and impregnation methods. The samples were evaluated by TEM,cyclic voltammogram techniques and proton exchange membrane fuel cell performance test. The addition of CeO_2 obviously improved the performance of PEMFC and represented a notable function of oxygen enrichment in the cathode side. But with the addition of CeO_2,part of the catalyst surface was covered and led to the performance drop of the PEMFC.The best content of CeO_2 is 1% when it is added by impregnation method and 3% when it is added by sol method.

Preparation Of Spinel Limn_2o_4 Cathode Materials For Li-Ion Batteries Based On Sol-Gel Process, Xiang-Ming He

Journal of Electrochemistry

Spinel LiMn_(2)O_(4) was prepared from CH_(3)COOLi·2H_(2)O,Mn(CH_(3)COO)_(2) and adipic acid based on sol-gel process.XRD analysis showed that when the sintering temperature increased, the crystallinity increased, and the capacity also increased. However, its cycleability reached a maximum value at 750 ℃.The sintering duration also influenced on the capacity. The optimized performance was obtained when the sintering was carried out at 750 ℃ for 20 h.Under these conditions,as-prepared spinel LiMn_(2)O_(4) presented the initial discharge capacity of 130 mAh g~(-1) and 125 mAh g~(-1) at 15~(th) cycle.
