Sub-Pixel Registration In Computational Imaging And Applications To Enhancement Of Maxillofacial Ct Data, Murat Balci
Sub-Pixel Registration In Computational Imaging And Applications To Enhancement Of Maxillofacial Ct Data, Murat Balci
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In computational imaging, data acquired by sampling the same scene or object at different times or from different orientations result in images in different coordinate systems. Registration is a crucial step in order to be able to compare, integrate and fuse the data obtained from different measurements. Tomography is the method of imaging a single plane or slice of an object. A Computed Tomography (CT) scan, also known as a CAT scan (Computed Axial Tomography scan), is a Helical Tomography, which traditionally produces a 2D image of the structures in a thin section of the body. It uses X-ray, which …
Epidemiological Models For Mutating Pathogens With Temporary Immunity, Neeta Singh
Epidemiological Models For Mutating Pathogens With Temporary Immunity, Neeta Singh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Significant progress has been made in understanding different scenarios for disease transmissions and behavior of epidemics in recent years. A considerable amount of work has been done in modeling the dynamics of diseases by systems of ordinary differential equations. But there are very few mathematical models that deal with the genetic mutations of a pathogen. In-fact, not much has been done to model the dynamics of mutations of pathogen explaining its effort to escape the host's immune defense system after it has infected the host. In this dissertation we develop an SIR model with variable infection age for the transmission …

The Stable Manifold Theorem For Semilinear Stochastic Evolution Equations And Stochastic Partial Differential Equations, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Tusheng Zhang, Huaizhong Zhao
Articles and Preprints
The main objective of this paper is to characterize the pathwise local structure of solutions of semilinear stochastic evolution equations (see’s) and stochastic partial differential equations (spde’s) near stationary solutions. Such characterization is realized through the long-term behavior of the solution field near stationary points. The analysis falls in two parts 1, 2.
In Part 1, we prove general existence and compactness theorems for Ck-cocycles of semilinear see’s and spde’s. Our results cover a large class of semilinear see’s as well as certain semilinear spde’s with Lipschitz and non-Lipschitz terms such as stochastic reaction diffusion equations and the …

Let a, b, c, d be complex numbers with d 6= 0 and |q| < 1. Define H1(a, b, c, d, q) := 1 1 + −abq + c (a + b)q + d + · · · + −abq2n+1 + cqn (a + b)q n+1 + d + · · · . We show that H1(a, b, c, d, q) converges and 1 H1(a, b, c, d, q) − 1 = c − abq d + aq P∞ j=0 (b/d) j (−c/bd)j q j(j+3)/2 (q)j (−aq2/d)j P∞ j=0 (b/d) j (−c/bd)j q j(j+1)/2 (q)j (−aq/d)j . We then use this result to deduce various corollaries, including the following: 1 1 − q 1 + q − q 3 1 + q 2 − q 5 1 + q 3 − · · · − q 2n−1 1 + q n − · · · = (q 2 ; q 3 )∞ (q; q 3)∞ , (−aq)∞ X∞ j=0 (bq) j (−c/b)j q j(j−1)/2 (q)j (−aq)j = (−bq)∞ X∞ j=0 (aq) j (−c/a)j q j(j−1)/2 (q)j (−bq)j , and the Rogers-Ramanujan identities, X∞ n=0 q n 2 (q; q)n = 1 (q; q 5)∞(q 4; q 5)∞ , X∞ n=0 q n 2+n (q; q)n = 1 (q 2; q 5)∞(q 3; q 5)∞.
The Convergence Behavior Of Q-Continued Fractions On The Unit Circle, Douglas Bowman, James Mclaughlin
The Convergence Behavior Of Q-Continued Fractions On The Unit Circle, Douglas Bowman, James Mclaughlin
Mathematics Faculty Publications
In a previous paper, we showed the existence of an uncountable set of points on the unit circle at which the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction does not converge to a finite value. In this present paper, we generalise this result to a wider class of qcontinued fractions, a class which includes the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction and the three Ramanujan-Selberg continued fractions. We show, for each q-continued fraction, G(q), in this class, that there is an uncountable set of points, YG, on the unit circle such that if y ∈ YG then G(y) does not converge to a finite value. We discuss …

Continued Fractions And Generalizations With Many Limits: A Survey, Douglas Bowman, James Mclaughlin
Mathematics Faculty Publications
There are infinite processes (matrix products, continued fractions, (r, s)-matrix continued fractions, recurrence sequences) which, under certain circumstances, do not converge but instead diverge in a very predictable way. We give a survey of results in this area, focusing on recent results of the authors.

The Radiative Transport Of Dust In Primordial Galaxies And Second-Generation Star Formation, Aparna Venkatesan, Biman B. Nath, J Shull
Physics and Astronomy
We investigate the radiativetransport of dust inprimordial galaxies in thepresence of the UVradiation field from thefirst metal-free stars. Wefind that dust createdin the first supernova(SN) explosions can bedriven through the interiorof the SN remnantto accumulate in theSN shells, where second-generationstars may form fromcompressed cooling gas. Thisscenario requires metal-free starsto form continuously overtimescales of up to10 Myr, consistent withrecent estimates. Silicate andgraphite grains, as wellas iron-bearing magnetites, aretransported to the shellsfor reasonable parameter assumptions, but their relative yieldsfrom primordial SNe isan important factor inthe resulting abundance ratios. We compare the resultsof segregated grain transportwith the current nucleosyntheticdata on extremely metal-poorGalactic halo stars. Analysis Of Response Calls To Diverse Ground Predators From Three Geographically Separate Florida Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma Coerulescens) Subpopulations, Sarah A. (Bales) Douglass
Master of Environmental Science (MES) Theses
Dialectic variation occurs in many bird species. Different factors have been investigated regarding dialectic variation, including cultural and genetic transmission of songs or calls, and geographic separation. In this study, the predator alarm call of the Florida Scrub-Jay to ground predators was recorded in three geographically separate subpopulations across Florida—Canaveral National Seashore/Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Lyonia Preserve and Leisure Lakes/Lake June in Winter Scrub State Park—to examine any dialectic occurrence between these three subpopulations. Additionally, many bird species are recognized as having highly evolved predator recognition systems, often with different calls for specific predators. The Florida Scrub Jay has …

Geographical Information System Analysis Of Great Blue Heron (Ardea Herodias) Colony Site Selection In Northeastern Indiana, Jason M. Kauffman
Master of Environmental Science (MES) Theses
Seventeen Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) nesting colonies were studied in northeastern Indiana to determine which natural and human variables, within 15 km of each heronry, correlated with the size and location of this bird’s nesting sites. The data collected in the field and with ArcMap, a Geographical Information System program, included: the types and distances to human disturbances and water/foraging sources; wetland size and type; the height, dbh, and species of nesting trees; and the number of active and total nests. This information was used to produce an individual map for each heronry as well as a …

Flow Resistance Dynamics In Step-Pool Stream Channels: 1. Large Woody Debris And Controls On Total Resistance, Andrew C. Wilcox, Ellen E. Wohl
Flow Resistance Dynamics In Step-Pool Stream Channels: 1. Large Woody Debris And Controls On Total Resistance, Andrew C. Wilcox, Ellen E. Wohl
Geosciences Faculty Publications
Flow resistance dynamics in step-pool channels were investigated through physical modeling using a laboratory flume. Variables contributing to flow resistance in step-pool channels were manipulated in order to measure the effects of various large woody debris (LWD) configurations, steps, grains, discharge, and slope on total flow resistance. This entailed nearly 400 flume runs, organized into a series of factorial experiments. Factorial analyses of variance indicated significant two-way and three-way interaction effects between steps, grains, and LWD, illustrating the complexity of flow resistance in these channels. Interactions between steps and LWD resulted in substantially greater flow resistance for steps with LWD …

Flow Resistance Dynamics In Step-Pool Channels: 2. Partitioning Between Grain, Spill, And Woody Debris Resistance, Andrew C. Wilcox, Jonathan M. Nelson, Ellen E. Wohl
Geosciences Faculty Publications
In step-pool stream channels, flow resistance is created primarily by bed sediments, spill over step-pool bed forms, and large woody debris (LWD). In order to measure resistance partitioning between grains, steps, and LWD in step-pool channels we completed laboratory flume runs in which total resistance was measured with and without grains and steps, with various LWD configurations, and at multiple slopes and discharges. Tests of additive approaches to resistance partitioning found that partitioning estimates are highly sensitive to the order in which components are calculated and that such approaches inflate the values of difficult-to-measure components that are calculated by subtraction …

Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Barium, Bart Davidson, R. Stephen Fisher
Information Circular--KGS
Barium is a silver-white alkaline earth metal that is not found free in nature because it is highly reactive with sulfate and carbonate. Barium compounds can be naturally occurring or man-made. The most common natural occurrence of barium is in the mineral barite (barium sulfate), which has many uses in industry, such as a filler in the making of rubber, plastic and resin, white pigment, drilling lubricants used in the oil and gas industry, paint, bricks and glass (Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, 2004). Barium sulfate is very slightly soluble in water and absorbs X-rays, making it an …

Thirty-one analytes were measured in fish tissue taken from largemouth bass, catfish, and bluegill harvested from lakes and ponds in reclaimed and unreclaimed coal-mine spoil of Pennsylvanian age. The spoil area is approximately 7,756 acres created primarily from surface mining, and has been used in increasing intensity since 1969 as a training site by the Kentucky Army National Guard. Four fish were harvested for analysis from the area of unreclaimed spoil that resulted from mining prior to 1977, and 15 fish were harvested for analysis from the part of the training facility that was reclaimed by 1985. Twenty-six analytes had …

Clustering Spatial Data For Join Operations Using Match-Based Partition, Jitian Xiao
Clustering Spatial Data For Join Operations Using Match-Based Partition, Jitian Xiao
Research outputs pre 2011
The spatial join is an operation that combines two sets of spatial data by their spatial relationships. The cost of spatial join could be very high due to the large sizes of spatial objects and the computation-intensive spatial operations. In spatial join processing, a common method to minimize the I/O cost is to partition the spatial objects into clusters and then schedule the processing of the clusters such that the number of times the same objects to be fetched into memory can be minimized. In this paper, we propose a match-based approach to partition a large spatial data set into …

We assessed scientists’ ability to detect declines of marine mammal stocks based on recent levels of survey effort, when the actual decline is precipitous. We defined a precipitous decline as a 50% decrease in abundance in 15 yr, at which point a stock could be legally classified as “depleted” under the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act.We assessed stocks for three categories of cetaceans: large whales (n = 23, most of which are listed as endangered), beaked whales (n = 11, potentially vulnerable to anthropogenic noise), and small whales/dolphins/porpoises (n = 69, bycatch in fisheries and important abundant …
