Review Of Structure And Basement Control Of The Lapstone Structural Complex, Sydney Basin, Eastern New South Wales, C. L. Fergusson Nov 2006

Review Of Structure And Basement Control Of The Lapstone Structural Complex, Sydney Basin, Eastern New South Wales, C. L. Fergusson

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

In the western Sydney Basin, the Lapstone Structural Complex is a major north-trending association of monoclines and faults that forms the frontal ridge of the Blue Mountains Plateau. At Kurrajong Heights, the Lapstone Structural Complex is dominated by an east-facing monocline with a gently dipping central limb containing several different homoclinal segments. At the Hawkesbury Lookout section, strata are steeply dipping to near vertical along the main east-facing monocline. The Lapstone Structural Complex has been related to either steep east-dipping extensional faulting or to moderate to steep west-dipping contraction faults. Strike-slip displacement may also have played a role in its …

Multiwalled Ice Helixes And Ice Nanotubes, Jaeil Bai, Jun Wang, Xiao Cheng Zeng Nov 2006

Multiwalled Ice Helixes And Ice Nanotubes, Jaeil Bai, Jun Wang, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

We report six phases of high-density nano-ice predicted to form within carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at high pressure. High-density nano-ice self-assembled within smaller-diameter CNT (17,0) exhibits a double-walled helical structure where the outer wall consists of four double- stranded helixes, which resemble a DNA double helix, and the inner wall is a quadruple-stranded helix. Four other double-walled nano-ices, self-assembled respectively in two larger-diameter CNTs (20,0 and 22,0), display tubular structure. Within CNT (24,0), the confined water can freeze spontaneously into a triple-walled helical nanoice where the outer wall is an 18-stranded helix and the middle and inner walls are hextuple-stranded helixes.

Peter Dowben Publications

A boron carbide diode detector, fabricated from two different polytypes of semiconducting boron carbide, will detect neutrons in reasonable agreement with theory. Small deviations from the model calculations occur due to the detection efficiencies of the 10B capture products Li plus α sum signal differing somewhat from expectation in the thin diodes. The performance of the all boron carbide neutron detector does depart from the behavior of devices where a boron rich neutron capture layer is distinct from the diode charge collection region (i.e. a conversion layer solid state detector), as is expected.

Energetics Of Oxaspirocycle Prototypes: 1,7-Dioxaspiro[5.5]Undecane And 1,7,9-Trioxadispiro[5.1.5.3]Hexadecane, Abby Jones Weldon, Gregory S. Tschumper Nov 2006

Energetics Of Oxaspirocycle Prototypes: 1,7-Dioxaspiro[5.5]Undecane And 1,7,9-Trioxadispiro[5.1.5.3]Hexadecane, Abby Jones Weldon, Gregory S. Tschumper

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

(Chemical Equation Presented) The relative gas-phase energetics of several low-lying isomers of 1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane and 1,7,9-trioxadispiro[5.1.5. 3]hexadecane have been calculated with second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory and basis sets as large as aug-cc-pVQZ. Relative energies in THF, dichloromethane, acetone, and DMSO have been estimated with corrections from polarized continuum model calculations at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d) level. In the most stable conformation of 1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane, both rings adopt chair conformations, and both oxygens are axially disposed (2A). It is more than 2 kcal mol-1 more stable than all the other conformers. In agreement with previous work, the "twist-boat" trans isomer (3A) is the most …

Fluorescence Blinking Statistics From Cdse Core And Core/Shell Nanorods, S. Wang, C. Querner, Thomas B. Emmons , '08, M. Drndic, Catherine Hirshfeld Crouch

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

We report fluorescence blinking statistics measured from single CdSe nanorods (NRs) of seven different sizes with aspect ratios ranging from 3 to 11. This study also included core/shell CdSe/ZnSe NRs and core NRs with two different surface ligands producing different degrees of surface passivation. We compare the findings for NRs to our measurements of blinking statistics from spherical CdSe core and CdSe/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals (NCs). We find that, for both NRs and spherical NCs, the off-time probability distributions are well described by a power law, while the on-time probability distributions are best described by a truncated power law, P(tau(on)) similar …

Properties Of Some Matrix Classes In Linear Complementarity Theory., Arup Kumar Das Dr. Nov 2006

Properties Of Some Matrix Classes In Linear Complementarity Theory., Arup Kumar Das Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The linear complementarity problem is a fundamental problem that arises in optimization, game theory, economics, and engineering. It can be stated as follows:Given a square matrix A of order n with real entries and an n dimensional vector q, find n dimensional vectors w and z satisfying w − Az = q, w ≥ 0, z ≥ 0 (1.1.1) w t z = 0. (1.1.2)This problem is denoted as LCP(q, A). The name comes from the condition (1.1.2), the complementarity condition which requires that at least one variable in the pair (wj , zj ) should be equal to 0 …

New Options For Extending Grazing, Edward N. Ballard

Kentucky Grazing Conference

Feed costs represent the major cost in most livestock production systems. A recently completed analysis of 225 Standardized Performance Analysis (SPA) Beef Cow Records on herds in Illinois and Iowa showed that feed cost was the overriding factor determining profitability, explaining over 57 percent of the herd-to-herd variation.

Dollars & Cents Of Intensive Grazing, Kenneth H. Burdine Nov 2006

Dollars & Cents Of Intensive Grazing, Kenneth H. Burdine

Kentucky Grazing Conference

A rotational grazing system can generally be defined as the use of several pastures with one being grazed while the others are rested. On the contrary, conventional or continuous grazing systems allow livestock access to the entire pasture area and let them decide where, what, and how long to graze. In most cases, Kentucky pastures employing continuous grazing systems are too large for efficient management and forage utilization. In such instances, cattle overgraze more palatable forages and areas close to shade and water, while other sections of the pasture are underutilized. This leads to lower animal output per acre than …

Kentucky Grazing Conference

The University of Kentucky is developing stronger ties with the state’s horse industry in the areas of research, extension and teaching. Many horse farms in the bluegrass region are interested in UK’s assistance with pasture evaluation. During the fall of 2005 a team from the UK Forage Extension Program (Ray Smith, Tom Keene, Jesse Morrison, Gabriel Roberts) conducted a pilot project to evaluate horse pastures on 14 central KY farms. One of the focuses of the pilot was the evaluation of pastures for percent tall fescue and the potential of fescue stands to cause fescue toxicity in pregnant broodmares. We …

Managing Pasture Growth And Quality With Grazing, S. Ray Smith Nov 2006

Managing Pasture Growth And Quality With Grazing, S. Ray Smith

Kentucky Grazing Conference

One of the keys to profitable livestock production is to minimize the costs of producing a marketable animal or animal product. Feed costs are commonly 70-80 percent of the cost of growing or maintaining an animal. Pastures provide feed at a cost of .01-.02 cents/lb of TDN while hay costs .04-.06 cents/lb TDN. Improved pasture management offers the single greatest opportunity to lower production costs, assuming that animal genetics, health, marketing procedures, and other areas of management have been addressed. A primary goal of livestock producers should be to utilize grazed forage for as many months of the year as …

Everyday Cattle Graze Is Money Saved, Garry D. Lacefield

Kentucky Grazing Conference

During one of my first visits to New Zealand over twenty years ago, I had the opportunity to visit many different dairy, beef, sheep and deer farms. While visiting a dairy farm, I remember the farmer telling me about his grazing program and their goal to “optimize grazing and minimize stored feed.” I remember him saying, “everyday grazed is money saved”. I admit, the reality of that statement didn’t truly sink in that day; but over the years, the truth of what he said has not only “sunk in” but has been reinforced by visits to other farms literally around …

Bermudagrass In Kentucky, David C. Ditsch Nov 2006

Bermudagrass In Kentucky, David C. Ditsch

Kentucky Grazing Conference

Interest in bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers] is increasing in Kentucky as livestock producers continue their search for warm-season perennial forages capable of filling in the mid-summer growth slump we commonly experience with our traditional cool-season grasses. This is partially due to the recent availability of seeded bermudagrass varieties with improved winter hardiness thereby reducing establishment cost and increasing the odds of success.

Grazing Corn, Chad Lee Nov 2006

Grazing Corn, Chad Lee

Kentucky Grazing Conference

Grazing is the cheapest form of feed for cattle. While perennial grasses and alfalfa are reliable components to a grazing system, another component could be corn.

Grazing corn is an option for a couple of situations: 1) as a bridge crop when pasture renovation is needed, and 2) as an insurance crop in an overall grazing system.

Rovibrational Resonance Effects In Collision-Induced Electronic Energy Transfer: I2(E,V=0-2)+Cf4, J. M. Hutchison, Benjamin Robert Booth Carlisle , '05, Thomas Alex Stephenson Nov 2006

Rovibrational Resonance Effects In Collision-Induced Electronic Energy Transfer: I2(E,V=0-2)+Cf4, J. M. Hutchison, Benjamin Robert Booth Carlisle , '05, Thomas Alex Stephenson

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

Collisions of I-2 in the E(0(g)(+)) electronic state with CF4 molecules induce electronic energy transfer to the nearby D, beta, and D-' ion-pair states. Simulations of dispersed fluorescence spectra reveal collision-induced electronic energy transfer rate constants and final vibrational state distributions within each final electronic state. In comparison with earlier reports on I-2(upsilon(E)=0-2) collisions with He or Ar atoms, we find markedly different dynamics when I-2, excited to the same rovibronic states, collides with CF4. Final vibrational state distributions agree with the associated Franck-Condon factors with the initially prepared state to a greater degree than those found with He or …

Myrothecium Verrucaria : A Potential Biological Control Agent For The Invasive 'Old World Climbing Fern' Lygodium Microphyllum, Tainya Cathia Clarke

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Non native plants are a threat to ecosystems across the globe, some delicate ecosystems like those in South Florida are in greater danger because of the large number of endemics at risk. Old World Climbing Fern (Lygodium microphyllum) has become one of the most invasive and destructive weeds in southern Florida. To date different efforts have been made to control its growth and spread but have not been successful. In light of the highly delicate ecosystem affected by L. microphyllum, a biological paradigm may be a more ecologically sound approach to the containment of this obnoxious weed. …

The Interaction Between Hydrogen And Various Carbon Allotropes Calculated Using Bond-Order Potentials, Michael Knippenberg Nov 2006

The Interaction Between Hydrogen And Various Carbon Allotropes Calculated Using Bond-Order Potentials, Michael Knippenberg

All Dissertations

Carbon-based materials are an exciting component of materials science. The understanding of interactions at the atomic level provide useful information for creating materials with specific properties. This dissertation examines three hydrocarbon systems: amorphous carbon (with and without hydrogenation), hydrogen adsorption in carbon nanotubes, and reconstructions of the diamond surface.
A melting/quenching procedure is used to produce amorphous carbon films at 2.0, 2.6, and 3.0 g/cm3. The sp3 fraction at each density is calculated and found to be qualitatively similar to experimental data at low densities. The inclusion of hydrogen in the amorphous film causes the sp3 …

Phase Contrast Imaging Using Photothermally Induced Phase Transitions In Liquid Crystals, Chandra S. Yelleswarapu, Sri-Rajasekhar Kothapalli, Francisco J. Aranda, D.V.G.L.N. Rao, Yvonne Vaillancourt, Brian R. Kimball

Physics Faculty Publications

Phase contrast imaging is performed for live biological species using photothermal induced birefringence in dye doped liquid crystals. Using typical 4-f configuration, when liquid crystal cell is at back focal plane of Fourier lens, low spatial frequencies at center of Fourier spectrum are intense enough to induce local liquid crystal molecules into isotropic phase, whereas high spatial frequencies on the edges are not intense enough and remain in anisotropic phase. This results in π/2 phase difference between high and low spatial frequencies. This simple, inexpensive, all-optical, user-friendly, self-adaptive phase contrast imaging technique using low-power laser offers several distinct advantages.
