Generalized Geologic Map For Land-Use Planning: Grayson County, Kentucky, E. Glynn Beck, David A. Williams, Daniel I. Carey

Map and Chart--KGS

This map is not intended to be used for selecting individual sites. Its purpose is to inform land-use planners, government officials, and the public in a general way about geologic bedrock conditions that affect the selection of sites for various purposes. The properties of thick soils may supercede those of the underlying bedrock and should be considered on a site-to-site basis. At any site, it is important to understand the characteristics of both the soils and the underlying rock.

Spectral Analysis Of The Supreme Court, Brian L. Lawson, Michael E. Orrison, David T. Uminsky Jan 2006

Spectral Analysis Of The Supreme Court, Brian L. Lawson, Michael E. Orrison, David T. Uminsky

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

The focus of this paper is the linear algebraic framework in which the spectral analysis of voting data like that above is carried out. As we will show, this framework can be used to pinpoint voting coalitions in small voting bodies like the United States Supreme Court. Our goal is to show how simple ideas from linear algebra can come together to say something interesting about voting. And what could be more simple than where our story begins— with counting.

There is increasing pressure on medical practices to use digital information systems for storage of patient data. Some consideration is given to protecting these systems from a external or “ hacker” focus. This paper looks at the issue that the increasing use of digital information systems has for insider malfeasance.

Minimal Congestion Trees, Shelly Jean Dawson Jan 2006

Minimal Congestion Trees, Shelly Jean Dawson

Theses Digitization Project

Analyzes the results of M.I. Ostrovskii's theorem of inequalities which estimate the minimal edge congestion for finite simple graphs. Uses the generic results of the theorem to examine and further reduce the parameters of inequalities for specific families of graphs, particularly complete graphs and complete bipartite graphs. Also, explores a possible minimal congestion tree for some grids while forming a conjecture for all grids.

Modeling Queueing Systems, Angela Zoi Leontas Jan 2006

Modeling Queueing Systems, Angela Zoi Leontas

Theses Digitization Project

The thesis introduces the theory of queueing systems and demonstrates its applicability to real life problems. It discusses (1) Markovian property and measures of effectiveness with exponential interarrival and service times; (2) Erlang service times, and a single server; (3) different goodness-of-fit tests that can be used to determine whether the exponential distribution is appropriate for a given set of data. A single server queueing system with exponential interarrival times and Erlang service times is simulated using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).

A Framework For Inclusive Teaching In Stem Disciplines, Lois Reddick, Wayne Jacobson, Angela Linse, Darryl Yong Jan 2006

A Framework For Inclusive Teaching In Stem Disciplines, Lois Reddick, Wayne Jacobson, Angela Linse, Darryl Yong

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

A wide body of literature exists recounting the ways in which inclusive teaching practices and principles benefit students and positively impact learning, student retention, and professional development across disciplines. However, STEM faculty do not readily accept the traditional approach of examining course content from multiple perspectives as relevant to their course content or useful in their teaching. In this chapter, we propose a Framework for Inclusive Teaching in STEM Disciplines that reflects the contexts of teaching in these disciplines, and extends James Banks’ Five Dimensions of Multicultural Education to the distinct needs of STEM faculty in their classes. We also …

Some Promising Approaches To Tumor-Immune Modeling, Lisette G. De Pillis, Ami E. Radunskaya

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Mathematical models of tumor-immune interactions provide an analytical framework in which to address specific questions regarding tumor-immune dynamics. We present a brief summary of several approaches we are currently exploring to model tumor growth, tumor-immune interactions, and treatments. Results to date have shown that simulations of tumor growth using different levels of immune stimulating ligands, effector cells, and tumor challenge, are able to reproduce data from published studies. We additionally present some of our current efforts in the investigation of optimal control to aid in determining improved treatment strategies.

Spatial Tumor-Immune Modeling, Lisette G. De Pillis, D G. Mallet, Ami E. Radunskaya Jan 2006

Spatial Tumor-Immune Modeling, Lisette G. De Pillis, D G. Mallet, Ami E. Radunskaya

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

In this paper, we carry out an examination of four mechanisms that can potentially lead to changing morphologies in a growing tumor: variations in nutrient consumption rates, cellular adhesion, excessive consumption of nutrients by tumor cells and immune cell interactions with the tumor. We present numerical simulations using a hybrid PDE-cellular automata (CA) model demonstrating the effects of each mechanism before discussing hypotheses about the contribution of each mechanism to morphology change.

Alexei Gruverman Publications

The majority of calcified and connective tissues possess complex hierarchical structure spanning the length scales from nanometers to millimeters. Understanding the biological functionality of these materials requires reliable methods for structural imaging on the nanoscale. Here, we demonstrate an approach for electromechanical imaging of the structure of biological samples on the length scales from tens of microns to nanometers using piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM), which utilizes the intrinsic piezoelectricity of biopolymers such as proteins and polysaccharides as the basis for high-resolution imaging. Nanostructural imaging of a variety of protein-based materials, including tooth, antler, and cartilage, is demonstrated. Visualization of protein …

Bioelectromechanical Imaging By Scanning Probe Microscopy: Galvani’S Experiment At The Nanoscale, Sergei V. Kalinin, B. J. Rodriguez, J. Shin, Stephen Jesse, V. Grichko, T. Thundat, Arthur P. Baddorf, Alexei Gruverman

Alexei Gruverman Publications

Since the discovery in the late 18th century of electrically induced mechanical response in muscle tissue, coupling between electrical and mechanical phenomena has been shown to be a near-universal feature of biological systems. Here, we employ scanning probe microscopy (SPM) to measure the sub-Angstrom mechanical response of a biological system induced by an electric bias applied to a conductive SPM tip. Visualization of the spiral shape and orientation of protein fibrils with 5 nm spatial resolution in a human tooth and chitin molecular bundle orientation in a butterfly wing is demonstrated. In particular, the applicability of SPM-based techniques for the …

Axel Enders Publications

Ultrathin Fe films on Pt substrates have been investigated under ultrahigh vacuum conditions by scanning tunneling microscopy, low energy electron diffraction, magneto-optical Kerr effect, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements, and Kerr microscopy. We present a comparison between Fe films on flat Pt(111) and stepped Pt(997), with particular focus on the magnetic anisotropy in the submonolayer thickness range below 0.2 monolayer coverage, and above the spin reorientation transition at 3 monolayer thickness. The comparison of structure and magnetism suggests that the perpendicular easy axis found for films thinner than three monolayers is due to dominating contributions from both film interfaces to …

Changes In Land Cover And Breeding Bird Populations With Restoration Of Riparian Habitats In East-Central Iowa, Thomas J. Benson, James J. Dinsmore, William L. Hohman Jan 2006

Changes In Land Cover And Breeding Bird Populations With Restoration Of Riparian Habitats In East-Central Iowa, Thomas J. Benson, James J. Dinsmore, William L. Hohman

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Conversion of Midwestern riparian areas for agricultural production has greatly altered their function and suitability for birds and other wildlife. Recently, however, restoration of riparian functions has been a major focus of land management agencies in the Midwest. We used historic land-use data to describe land-cover changes since European settlement and the subsequent effects of habitat restoration efforts on the landscape along a section of the Iowa River in east-central Iowa. We then used bird-density data collected in a subset of the study area in 2001 and 2002 to estimate changes in breeding bird populations of the entire study area …

Winter Bird Use Of Conservation Reserve Program Fields Harvested For Biomass, Les D. Murray, Louis B. Best Jan 2006

Winter Bird Use Of Conservation Reserve Program Fields Harvested For Biomass, Les D. Murray, Louis B. Best

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

As Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) contracts expire, many fields may be returned to agricultural production. Growing switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) as a biomass fuel is an alternative to returning fields to rowcrops. CRP fields provide winter cover for birds, but the harvest of biomass would remove most of the cover and affect bird use of the fields. We estimated winter bird abundances in nonharvested, total-harvested, and partially (strip) harvested switchgrass fields in southern Iowa. Song sparrows (Melospiza melodia) were observed only in strip-harvested fields and ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) were observed only in nonharvested fields and uncut areas of strip-harvested fields. …

Artists' Depictions Of Catsteps In The Loess Hills Of Iowa: Evidence For Mid-Nineteenth Century Climate Change, Kimberly R. Dillon, Steven H. Emerman, Pamela K. Wilcox Jan 2006

Artists' Depictions Of Catsteps In The Loess Hills Of Iowa: Evidence For Mid-Nineteenth Century Climate Change, Kimberly R. Dillon, Steven H. Emerman, Pamela K. Wilcox

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Catsteps are the staircase-like features common on hillslopes of the Loess Hills of western Iowa. The record of artistic depictions of the Loess Hills was examined to determine when catsteps appeared. George Catlin, Karl Bodmer, and John James Audubon traveled up the Missouri River m 1832, 1833 and 1843, respectively, and between them, produced 31 works of art depicting either the Loess Hills or the loess bluffs on the Nebraska side of the river. Only three works by Bodmer of Blackbird Hill on the Nebraska side possibly show catsteps. The Assistant State Geologist, Orestes St. John, produced six sketches of …

Silicification Of Corals, Stromatoporids, And Brachiopods At The Weathered Surface Within The Devonian-Age Little Cedar Formation (Solon And Rapid Members) In Eastern Iowa, Adam L. Majeski, Paul L. Garvin Jan 2006

Silicification Of Corals, Stromatoporids, And Brachiopods At The Weathered Surface Within The Devonian-Age Little Cedar Formation (Solon And Rapid Members) In Eastern Iowa, Adam L. Majeski, Paul L. Garvin

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Diagenesis of fossils contained in middle-Devonian limestones was studied at the Troy Mills and Robins quarries in Linn County, Iowa and at the Four County and Ernst quarries in Johnson County, Iowa. Fossils located at weathered bedrock surfaces were preferentially silicified, and the silicification affected corals, stromatoporids and, to a limited extent, brachiopods, but not other fossils or the host rock. The siliceous horizon extends no more than a few centimeters below the weathered surfaces, suggesting that silicification was constrained by them. Silica for silicification might have come from a variety of sources, including sponge spicules or radiolarian tests, insoluble …

Nanodot-Based Organic Memory Devices, Zhengchun Liu Jan 2006

Nanodot-Based Organic Memory Devices, Zhengchun Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, resistor-type, diode-type, and transistor-type organic memory devices were investigated, aiming at the low-cost plastic integrated circuit applications. A series of solution-processing techniques including spin-coating, inkjet printing, and self-assembly were employed to fabricate these devices.

The organic resistive memory device is based on a novel molecular complex film composed of tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and a soluble methanofullerene derivative [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). It has an Al/molecules/Al sandwich structure. The molecular layer was formed by spin-coating technique instead of expensive vacuum deposition method. The current-voltage characteristics show that the device switches from the initial 'low' conduction state to …

The Strav/berry River has been designated an Extraordinary Resource Water, an Ecologically Sensitive Water Body, and a Natural and Scenic Waterway. As such, it is particularly important that the biodiversity of this river system be documented thoroughly. The purpose of this research was to develop a comprehensive list of the aquatic macroinvertebrates of the Strawberry River and its major tributaries. The information was developed from a thorough literature review and by examining specimens housed in various collections of the Arkansas State University Museum of Zoology and collections of the authors. The latter included 9 collections at 4 sites along the …

Parallel Algorithms For Multicriteria Shortest Path Problems, David L. Sonnier Jan 2006

Parallel Algorithms For Multicriteria Shortest Path Problems, David L. Sonnier

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

This paper presents two strategies for solving multicriteria shortest path problems with more than two criteria. Given an undirected graph within vertices, medges, and a set of K weights associated with each edge, we define a path as a sequence of edges from vertex s to vertex t. We want to find the Pareto-optimal set of paths from s to t. The solutions proposed herein are based on cluster computing using the Message-Passing Interface (MPI) extensions to the C programming language. We solve problems with 3 and 4 criteria, using up to 8 processors in parallel and using solutions based …

Generalised E-Algebras Over Valuation Domains, Brendan Goldsmith, P. Zanardo Jan 2006

Generalised E-Algebras Over Valuation Domains, Brendan Goldsmith, P. Zanardo

Articles

Let R be a valuation domain. We investigate the notions of E(R)- algebra and generalized E(R)-algebra and show that for wide classes of maximal valuation domains R, all generalized E(R)-algebras have rank one. As a by-product we prove if R is a maximal valuation domain of finite Krull dimension, then the two notions coincide. We give some examples of E(R)-algebras of finite rank that are decomposable, but show that over Nagata domains of small degree, the E(R)-algebras are, with one exception, the indecomposable finite rank algebras.
