Synthesis Of Vic-Dioxime Derivatives With Hydrazone Side Groups And Their Metal Complexes, İlknur Babahan, Hüseyi̇n Anil, Nursabah Sarikavakli

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Two novel vic-dioxime (L^1H_2, L^2H_2) compounds bearing hydrazone side groups and their transition metal complexes Ni(II), Co(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) were synthesized. The vic-dioxime ligands bearing hydrazone side groups were synthesized by reacting anti-glyoximehydrazine (GH_2) with 4-nitroacetophenone and 4-methylacetophenenone, respectively. Ligands form mononuclear complexes [(LH)_2M] with a metal to ligand ratio of 1:2 with M=Co(II)(H_2O)_2, Ni(II), and Cu(II). Zn(II) forms complexes [(LH)(H_2O)(Cl)Zn] with a metal to ligand ratio of 1:1. The Co(II) complexes of the ligands are proposed to be octahedral with water molecules as axial ligands, the Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes are proposed to be square planar, and the …

Electrochemical Copolymerization Of Thiophene Containing Pseudo-Polyether Cages With Pyrrole, Ati̇lla Ci̇haner, Ahmet M. Önal

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Conducting copolymers were synthesized via the electrochemical oxidation of pyrrole (Py) in the presence of the monomer 1,12-bis(2-thienyl)-2,5,8,11-tetraoxadodecane (I). The presence of monomer I in the electrolytic solution greatly changed the CV behavior of Py during its potensiodynamic polymerization. The electroactivity of poly(I-co-Py) increased with the increasing amount of I in the comonomer mixture. Copolymer films were prepared via constant potential electrolysis in an electrolytic solution containing 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate (TBAPF_6) dissolved in acetonitrile. The spectroelectrochemical properties of the films were investigated using UV-VIS spectroscopy.

Low-Temperature Infrared Spectroscopy Of H2 In Solid C60, Hugh O.H. Churchill Jan 2006

Low-Temperature Infrared Spectroscopy Of H2 In Solid C60, Hugh O.H. Churchill

Honors Papers

Diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy is used to measure the quantum dynamics of molecular hydrogentrapped within a C60 lattice at temperatures as low as 10 K. Crystal field effects in conjunction with rotational translational coupling lead to a rich spectrum with multiply split peaks that are more than an order of magnitude sharper than at room temperature. The induced redshifts in the vibrational-rotational mode frequencies are explained using a simple model in which the state dependence of the H2 polarizability leads to changes in the C60-H2 interaction potential.

Unconfined Versus Confined Speleogenetic Settings: Variations Of Solution Porosity, Alexander Klimchouk Jan 2006

Unconfined Versus Confined Speleogenetic Settings: Variations Of Solution Porosity, Alexander Klimchouk

International Journal of Speleology

Speleogenesis in confined settings generates cave morphologies that differ much from those formed in unconfined settings. Caves developed in unconfined settings are characterised by broadly dendritic patterns of channels due to highly competing development. In contrast, caves originated under confined conditions tend to form two- or three-dimensional mazes with densely packed conduits. This paper illustrates variations of solution (channel) porosity resulted from speleogenesis in unconfined and confined settings by the analysis of morphometric parameters of typical cave patterns. Two samples of typical cave systems formed in the respective settings are compared. The sample that represents unconfined speleogenesis consists of solely …

A Server Consolidation Solution, Richard J. Swain Jan 2006

A Server Consolidation Solution, Richard J. Swain

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Advances in server architecture has enabled corporations the ability to strategically redesign their data centers in order to realign the system infrastructure to business needs. The architectural design of physically and logically consolidating servers into fewer and smaller hardware platforms can reduce data center overhead costs, while adding quality of service. In order for the organization to take advantage of the architectural opportunity a server consolidation project was proposed that utilized blade technology coupled with the virtualization of servers. Physical consolidation reduced the data center facility requirements, while server virtualization reduced the number of required hardware platforms. With the constant …

Assessing Trace Evidence Left By Secure Deletion Programs, Paul Burke, Philip Craiger Jan 2006

Assessing Trace Evidence Left By Secure Deletion Programs, Paul Burke, Philip Craiger

Publications

Secure deletion programs purport to permanently erase files from digital media. These programs are used by businesses and individuals to remove sensitive information from media, and by criminals to remove evidence of the tools or fruits of illegal activities. This paper focuses on the trace evidence left by secure deletion programs. In particular, five Windows-based secure deletion programs are tested to determine if they leave identifiable signatures after deleting a file. The results show that the majority of the programs leave identifiable signatures. Moreover, some of the programs do not completely erase file metadata, which enables forensic investigators to extract …

Publications

A reduced proper motion diagram utilizing Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) photometry and astrometry and USNO-B plate astrometry is used to separate cool white dwarf candidates from metal-weak, high-velocity, mainsequence Population II stars (subdwarfs) in the SDSS Data Release 2 imaging area. Follow-up spectroscopy using the Hobby-Eberly Telescope, the MMT, and the McDonald 2.7 m telescope is used to demonstrate that the white dwarf and subdwarf loci separate cleanly in the reduced proper motion diagram and that the contamination by subdwarfs is small near the cool white dwarf locus. This enables large, statistically complete samples of white dwarfs, particularly the …

Kernels Of Directed Graph Laplacians, John S. Caughman Iv, J. J. P. Veerman Jan 2006

Kernels Of Directed Graph Laplacians, John S. Caughman Iv, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Let G denote a directed graph with adjacency matrix Q and in- degree matrix D. We consider the Kirchhoff matrix L = D − Q, sometimes referred to as the directed Laplacian. A classical result of Kirchhoff asserts that when G is undirected, the multiplicity of the eigenvalue 0 equals the number of connected components of G. This fact has a meaningful generalization to directed graphs, as was observed by Chebotarev and Agaev in 2005. Since this result has many important applications in the sciences, we offer an independent and self-contained proof of their theorem, showing in this paper …

Analyzing Dna Microarrays With Undergraduate Statisticians, Johanna S. Hardin, Laura Hoopes, Ryan Murphy '06 Jan 2006

Analyzing Dna Microarrays With Undergraduate Statisticians, Johanna S. Hardin, Laura Hoopes, Ryan Murphy '06

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

With advances in technology, biologists have been saddled with high dimensional data that need modern statistical methodology for analysis. DNA microarrays are able to simultaneously measure thousands of genes (and the activity of those genes) in a single sample. Biologists use microarrays to trace connections between pathways or to identify all genes that respond to a signal. The statistical tools we usually teach our undergraduates are inadequate for analyzing thousands of measurements on tens of samples. The project materials include readings on microarrays as well as computer lab activities. The topics covered include image analysis, filtering and normalization techniques, and …

Yeast Through The Ages: A Statistical Analysis Of Genetic Changes In Aging Yeast, Alison Wise '05, Johanna S. Hardin, Laura Hoopes

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

Microarray technology allows for the expression levels of thousands of genes in a cell to be measured simultaneously. The technology provides great potential in the fields of biology and medicine, as the analysis of data obtained from microarray experiments gives insight into the roles of specific genes and the associated changes across experimental conditions (e.g., aging, mutation, radiation therapy, drug dosage). The application of statistical tools to microarray data can help make sense of the experiment and thereby advance genetic, biological, and medical research. Likewise, microarrays provide an exciting means through which to explore statistical techniques.

Intrinsic Linking And Knotting Of Graphs In Arbitrary 3–Manifolds, Erica Flapan, Hugh Howards, Don Lawrence, Blake Mellor

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

We prove that a graph is intrinsically linked in an arbitrary 3–manifold M if and only if it is intrinsically linked in S3. Also, assuming the Poincaré Conjecture, we prove that a graph is intrinsically knotted in M if and only if it is intrinsically knotted in S3.

Super Solutions Of The Dynamical Yang-Baxter Equation, Gizem Karaali Jan 2006

Super Solutions Of The Dynamical Yang-Baxter Equation, Gizem Karaali

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

Solutions of the classical dynamical Yang-Baxter equation on a Lie superalgebra are called super dynamical r−matrices. A super dynamical r−matrix r satisfies the zero weight condition if

[h ⊗ 1 + 1 ⊗ h, r(λ)] = 0 for all h ∈ ɧ, λ ∈ ɧ ∗ .

In this paper we classify super dynamical r−matrices with zero weight.

Implications Of Mass Education On Chemistry Higher Education, Christine O'Connor Jan 2006

Implications Of Mass Education On Chemistry Higher Education, Christine O'Connor

Conference Papers

The following paper discusses the implications of government policy on widening of participation at third level institutes. The increase in ‘non-traditional’ students has been widely recognised on an international scale; however some inequality issues still exist. The ‘struggles’ associated with widening of participation and creating a ‘new’ student type is discussed in particular reference to chemistry education. A change in mindset of staff on their pedagogical approach to cater for a diverse student body with a broad range of learner types is required. This must be supported from a departmental and institutional level. A look at the literature to investigate …

Effect Of A Finite Number Of Electrons On The Physical Properties Of Two Dimensional Parabolic Quantum Dot, Berna Gülveren, Ülfet Atav, Mehmet Tomak

Turkish Journal of Physics

The effect of number of particles on the physical properties of a two dimensional parabolic quantum dot system is investigated numerically at finite temperature. The Thomas-Fermi equation is solved self consistently with Poisson equation. The changes induced by electron-electron interaction are also analyzed. It is shown that the numerical procedure that is applied to solve the problem is very efficient at all temperatures.

Ibm-2 Calculations Of Selected Even-Even Ruthenium Nuclei, İlyas İnci̇, Nuretti̇n Türkan

Turkish Journal of Physics

In this study, we have employed the Interacting Boson Model-2 (IBM-2) to determine the most appropriate Hamiltonian for the study of ruthenium nuclei in the region A \cong 100. Using the best fit values of parameters to construct the Hamiltonian, we have estimated energy levels and multipole mixing ratios (\delta (E2/M1)) for some doubly-even Ru nuclei. The results are compared with previous experimental and theoretical data and it is observed that they are in good agreement.
