The ²H(E, E'P)N Reaction At High Four-Momentum Transfer, Hassan F. Ibrahim
The ²H(E, E'P)N Reaction At High Four-Momentum Transfer, Hassan F. Ibrahim
Physics Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation presents the highest four-momentum transfer, Q2, quasielastic (xBj = 1) results from Experiment E01-020 which systematically explored the 2H(e, e'p)n reaction ("Electro-disintegration" of the deuteron) at three different four-momentum transfers, Q2 = 0.8, 2.1, and 3.5 GeV2 and missing momenta, pmiss = 0, 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 GeV including separations of the longitudinal-transverse interference response function, RLT, and extraction of the longitudinal-transverse asymmetry, ALT. This systematic approach will help to understand the reaction mechanism and the deuteron structure down to the short …
Measured Stark Widths And Shifts Of The Neutral Argon Spectral Lines In 4s–4p And 4s–4p′ Transitions, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Albert R. Ellingboe, Stevan Djenize
Measured Stark Widths And Shifts Of The Neutral Argon Spectral Lines In 4s–4p And 4s–4p′ Transitions, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Albert R. Ellingboe, Stevan Djenize
Articles
We investigate the Stark widths (W) and the shift (d), of the seven neutral argon (Ar I) spectral lines from the 4s–4p and 4s–4p′ transitions. The line shapes are measured in a linear, low-pressure, optically thin pulsed arc discharge at about 16 000 K electron temperature (T) and about 7.0 × 1022 m− 3 electron density (N). The new data separates the electron width (We) and ion width Wi from the total Stark width (Wt), as well the separation of electron total Stark …

Brittle Compressive Failure Of Ice: Proportional Straining Vs Proportional Loading, E. M. Schulson, D. Iliescu
Brittle Compressive Failure Of Ice: Proportional Straining Vs Proportional Loading, E. M. Schulson, D. Iliescu
Dartmouth Scholarship
Proportional straining experiments have been performed on columnar-grained S2 fresh- water ice biaxially compressed across the columns at –108C at a strain rate of (4.5 1.5) 10–3 s–1. The results are compared with those obtained earlier (Iliescu and Schulson, 2004) from the same kind of material deformed to terminal failure under the same conditions, but through proportional loading. The exercise shows that the biaxial strength is practically independent of the path taken, at least under low confinement where Coulombic shear faulting limits terminal failure. First-year sea ice is expected to exhibit the same behavior.
Discovery Agent : An Interactive Approach For The Discovery Of Inclusion Dependencies, Dhaval B. Patel
Discovery Agent : An Interactive Approach For The Discovery Of Inclusion Dependencies, Dhaval B. Patel
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The information integration problem is a hard yet important problem in the field of databases. The goal of information integration is to provide unified views on diverse data among several resources. This subject has been studied for a long time. The integration can be performed using several ways. Schema integration using inclusion dependency constraints is one of them. The problem of discovering inclusion dependencies among input relations is NP-complete in terms of the number of attributes.
Two significant algorithms address this problem: FIND2 by Andreas Koeller and Zigzag by Fabien De Marchi. Both algorithms discover inclusion dependencies among input …
Studies Of Condensation/Evaporation Processes In The Glowworm Cave, New Zealand, C. R. De Freitas, A. Schmekal
Studies Of Condensation/Evaporation Processes In The Glowworm Cave, New Zealand, C. R. De Freitas, A. Schmekal
International Journal of Speleology
The condensation/evaporation process is important in caves, especially in tourist caves where there is carbon dioxide enriched air caused by visitors. The cycle of condensation and evaporation of condensate is believed to enhance condensation corrosion. The problem is condensation is difficult to measure. This study addresses the problem and reports on a method for measuring and modelling condensation rates in a limestone cave. Electronic sensors for measuring condensation and evaporation of the condensate as part of a single continuous process of water vapour flux are tested and used to collect 12 months of data. The study site is the Glowworm …

A Dyadic Composition To Foster Virtual Team Effectiveness: An Experimental Study, Gamze Karayaz
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The importance of effectiveness for virtual teamwork continues to gain momentum as technology and globalization of work accelerate. The implementation of virtual teams provides one approach to enhance competitiveness, overcoming the disadvantages of space and time differences through collaborative technologies. The influence of structure to virtual team performance has not been clearly established in the literature. The purpose of this research study was to investigate the effectiveness of a dyad structured approach for virtual teams using a quasi-experimental research design.
This research investigated four questions related to the influence of structure on virtual team effectiveness related to task performance, communication …

Age Validation And Reproductive Biology Of Bluefish, Pomatomus Saltatrix, Along The East Coast Of United States, Eric Robillard
OES Theses and Dissertations
I describe a new preparation technique that increases readability of otoliths, along with criteria for the interpretation of otolith microstructure of bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix, collected from Florida to New York during 2001-2003 (n = 2652). I validated annulus formation in otoliths for ages 1 to 8 using marginal increment analysis and thus extended validation by four years to include the preponderance of age classes in the catch. Although otoliths are typically superior for ageing, bluefish are routinely aged with scales; thus a side-by-side comparison of otoliths versus scales is necessary before otoliths can supplant scales. When compared, precision …
Group Key Management In Wireless Ad-Hoc And Sensor Networks, Mohammed A. Moharrum
Group Key Management In Wireless Ad-Hoc And Sensor Networks, Mohammed A. Moharrum
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
A growing number of secure group applications in both civilian and military domains is being deployed in WAHNs. A Wireless Ad-hoc Network (WARN) is a collection of autonomous nodes or terminals that communicate with each other by forming a multi-hop radio network and maintaining connectivity in a decentralized manner. A Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) is a special type of WARN with mobile users. MANET nodes have limited communication, computational capabilities, and power. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are sensor networks with massive numbers of small, inexpensive devices pervasive throughout electrical and mechanical systems and ubiquitous throughout the environment that monitor and …
Template-Based Metadata Extraction For Heterogeneous Collection, Jianfeng Tang
Template-Based Metadata Extraction For Heterogeneous Collection, Jianfeng Tang
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
With the growth of the Internet and related tools, there has been a rapid growth of online resources. In particular, by using high-quality OCR (Optical Character Recognition) tools it has become easy to convert an existing corpus into digital form and make it available online. However, a number of organizations have legacy collections that lack metadata. The lack of metadata hampers not only the discovery and dispersion of these collections over the Web, but also their interoperability with other collections. Unfortunately, manual metadata creation is expensive and time-consuming for a large collection, and most existing automated metadata extraction approaches have …

Femtosecond Laser Ablation With Single And Two-Photon Excitation For Mems, Mohamed Abdelfattah Kottb Ahmad Elbandrawy
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
There is an increasing interest in femtosecond laser micromachining of materials because of the femtosecond laser's unique high peak power, ultrashort pulse width, negligible heat conductivity process during the laser pulse, and the minimal heat affected zone, which is in the same order of magnitude of the ablated submicron spot. There are some obstacles in reaching optimal and reliable micromachining parameters. One of these obstacles is the lack of understanding of the nature of the interaction and related physical processes. These processes include amorphization, melting, re-crystallization, nucleated-vaporization, and ablation.
The focus of this Dissertation was to study the laser-matter interaction …

A strontium tungstate SrWO4 single crystal with dimensions of 25 40 mm2 has been grown by the Czochralski method using an iridium crucible. X-ray powder diffraction results show that as grown the SrWO4 crystal belongs to the tetragonal system in the scheelite structure. The effective segregation coefficients of elemental W and Sr in the crystal growth are measured by x-ray fluorescence, and the respective values are close to 1. The thermal properties of the SrWO4 crystal were systemically studied by measuring the thermal expansion, specific heat, and thermal diffusion coefficient. These results show that the crystal possesses a large anisotropic …
Classical And Quantum Algorithms For Finding Cycles, Jill Cirasella
Classical And Quantum Algorithms For Finding Cycles, Jill Cirasella
Publications and Research
Quantum computing—so weird, so wonderful—inspires much speculation about the line between the possible and the impossible. (Of course, there is still unclarity about how “impossible” intractable problems are and about how “possible” quantum computers are.) This thesis takes a slightly different tack: instead of focusing on how to make the impossible possible, it focuses on how to make the possible easier.
More specifically, this paper discusses quantum algorithms for finding cycles in graphs, a problem for which polynomial-time classical algorithms already exist. It explains and compares the classical and quantum algorithms, and it introduces a few new algorithms and observations. …

Controlling Rna Self-Assembly To Form Filaments, Neocles B. Leontis, Lorena Nasalean, Stéphanie Baudrey, Luc Jaeger
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Fundamental control over supra-molecular self-assembly for organization of matter on the nano-scale is a major objective of nanoscience and nanotechnology. 'RNA tectonics' is the design of modular RNA units, called tectoRNAs, that can be programmed to self-assemble into novel nano- and meso-scopic architectures of desired size and shape. We report the three-dimensional design of tectoRNAs incorporating modular 4-way junction (4WJ) motifs, hairpin loops and their cognate loop-receptors to create extended, programmable interaction interfaces. Specific and directional RNA-RNA interactions at these interfaces enable conformational, topological and orientational control of tectoRNA self-assembly. The interacting motifs are precisely positioned within the helical arms …

Structural And Evolutionary Classification Of G/U Wobble Basepairs In The Ribosome, Neocles B. Leontis, Ali Mokdad, Maryna V. Krasovska, Jiří Sponer
Chemistry Faculty Publications
We present a comprehensive structural, evolutionary and molecular dynamics (MD) study of the G/U wobble basepairs in the ribosome based on high-resolution crystal structures, including the recent Escherichia coli structure. These basepairs are classified according to their tertiary interactions, and sequence conservation at their positions is determined. G/U basepairs participating in tertiary interactions are more conserved than those lacking any interactions. Specific interactions occurring in the G/U shallow groove pocket-like packing interactions (P-interactions) and some phosphate backbone interactions (phosphate-in-pocket interactions)-lead to higher G/U conservation than others. Two salient cases of unique phylogenetic compensation are discovered. First, a P-interaction is conserved …

Infinitely Often Dense Bases And Geometric Structure Of Sumsets, Jaewoo Lee
Infinitely Often Dense Bases And Geometric Structure Of Sumsets, Jaewoo Lee
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We'll discuss two problems related to sumsets.
Nathanson constructed bases of integers with prescribed representation functions, then asked how dense bases for integers can be in such cases. Let A(-x, x) be the number of elements of A whose absolute value is less than or equal to x, then it's easy to see that A(-x, x) << x1/2 if its representation function is bounded, giving us a general upper bound. Chen constructed unique representation bases for integers with A(-x, x) ≥ x1/2-epsilon infinitely often. In the first chapter, we'll construct bases for integers with a prescribed representation function with A(-x, x) > x1/2/&phis;(x) infinitely often where &phis;(x) is any nonnegative real-valued function which tends to infinity.
In the second chapter, we'll see how sumsets appear geometrically. Assume A is a finite set of lattice points and h*D=h˙x:x∈conv A is a full dimensional polytope. Then we'll see …
Taphonomic And Sedimentologic Study Of The Cretaceous Tepee Buttes Limestone, Hilary G. Close
Taphonomic And Sedimentologic Study Of The Cretaceous Tepee Buttes Limestone, Hilary G. Close
Honors Papers
The Tepee Buttes methane seep deposits exist today as topographically defined limestone features in the surrounding Pierre Shale of the Campanian Western Interior Seaway. The present sloping surface has previously been assumed to be indicative of original seep structure, and biofacies were interpreted as roughly ringing a central vent core. Contradictory field observations in this study have prompted a more detailed taphonomic approach to the Tepee Buttes limestone, and certain depositional features such as reworked horizontal shell beds were noted and examined in detail for the first time. The results of a taphonomic and sedimentologic analysis reveal a complex history …
Evaluating Surface Area-Basin Volume Relationships For Prairie Potholes, Mike A. Davis
Evaluating Surface Area-Basin Volume Relationships For Prairie Potholes, Mike A. Davis
Theses and Dissertations
Establishing a relationship between surface area and volume of prairie potholes provides a simple method to estimate changes in water storage across the landscape. Applications include better prediction of floods and improved design for wetland restoration. Length, width, depth, surface area, and volumes were surveyed for eighty two potholes within the upper Turtle River watershed which lies sixty kilometers west of Grand Forks, ND. These data were used to determine the relationship and uncertainty between pothole surface and volume. Chi squared tests defined distributions of each variable. F and T statistical tests resolved similarities in variance and mean. The eighty …

Cave Levels, Marine Terraces, Paleoshorelines, And The Water Table In Peninsular Florida, Lee J. Florea, H L. Vacher
Earth, Environmental, and Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications
Levels of passages are a common feature of many cave systems around the world. Likewise, coastal and marine terraces are common in coastal plain settings. This paper extends the discussion of cave levels from traditional research sites in the interior lowlands of the United States to the Atlantic Coastal Plains, namely peninsular Florida. Are there levels in Florida caves, and is there a link between the elevation of cave levels, marine terraces, paleoshorelines, and thus the water table, above and below present sea level in peninsular Florida?

Shoreline evolution is the change in shore position through time. In fact, it is the material resistance of the coastal geologic underpinnings against the impinging hydrodynamic (and aerodynamic) forces. Along the shores of Chesapeake Bay, it is a process-response system. The processes at work include winds, waves, tides and currents, which shape and modify coastlines by eroding, transporting and depositing sediments. The shore line is commonly plotted and measured to provide a rate of change but it is as important to understand the geomorphic patterns of change. Shore analysis provides the basis to know how a particular coast has changed …

Climatic Forcing Of Erosion, Landscape, And Tectonics In The Bhutan Himalayas, Djordje Grujic, Isabelle Coutand, Bodo Bookhagen, Stéphane Bonnet, Ann Blythe, Chris Duncan
Ann Blythe
A fundamental objective in studies of climate-erosion-tectonics coupling is to document convincing correlation between observable indicators of these processes on the scale of a mountain range. The eastern Himalayas are a unique range to quantify the contribution of tectonics and climate to long-term erosion rates, because uniform and steady tectonics have persisted for several million years, while monsoonal precipitation patterns have varied in space and time. Specifically, the rise of the Shillong plateau, the only orographic barrier in the Himalayan foreland, has reduced the mean annual precipitation downwind in the eastern Bhutan Himalaya at the Miocene-Pliocene transition. Apatite fission-track (AFT) …
