The Effect Of Water Droplet Oscillations On The Scavenging Efficiency Of Micron Sized Particles, Raymond Mcdonnell

It has been hypothesized that drop oscillations and vortex shedding within the droplet wake affect the scavenging efficiency, E, of particles. However, no conclusive results have been presented on the effect these phenomena might have on particle scavenging. To address this need, experiments were conducted using oscillating water drops and water drops damped by the addition of glycerol. The scavenging efficiencies were measured for millimeter-sized droplets scavenging micron-sized particles. These results show that E is increased by drop oscillations where the particle diameter is large, but E is decreased by these oscillations when the particle diameter is small.

Natural gas storage produced waters (NGSPWs) are generated in large volumes, vary in composition, and often contain constituents in concentrations and forms that are toxic to receiving system biota. This research had three major objectives: 1) Characterize NGSPWs to discern the constituents of concern present in these waters; 2) Design and measure performance of a pilot-scale hybrid constructed wetland treatments system (CWTS) for treating NGSPWs, and; 3) Discern the reliability of the Turner Designs TD500 handheld fluorometer for measurement of oil-in-water in produced waters containing algae. Seashore paspalum is a new turfgrass being evaluated in the southeastern United States due to its tolerance to salinity and sodicity. Rhizoctonia solani AG 2-2 `LP` was isolated from seashore paspalum exhibiting symptoms typical of Large Patch (LP). The disease was identified based on field symptoms, lesions on the plant, and the fungus identified based on cultural characteristics, multinucleate hyphal cells, and anastomosis with a known tester isolate of R. solani AG 2-2 `LP` from zoysia grass.

Near-bottom seafloor mapping with precisely navigated deep submergence vehicles has become increasingly common in a range of oceanographic settings. Recent mapping efforts at deep-water hydrothermal vent sites have resulted in high-resolution (sub-meter) bathymetry datasets that can be used to identify morphological features associated with volcanic, tectonic, and hydrothermal processes. The resolution of these maps, and our ability to accurately quantify the complex morphologic details of hydrothermal structures has been limited by a number of variables including navigational accuracy, sonar settings (e.g. acoustic wavelength, sonar orientation, ping rate), survey parameters (e.g. altitude, speed), data density, and data processing techniques (e.g. gridding …

With an Optical feedback interferometry (OFI), a self-mixing signal (SMS) can be observed and employed to determine parameters of the semiconductor laser and metrological quantities of an object. In the cases of the measurement of the movement trace of an external target, phase unwrapping of the SMS must be performed, which remains a challenging issue. Adaptive filters are presented for improving the wavelength detection accuracy of FBG sensors within a sensing system which use tunable laser source. Simulation results demonstrated that by using this technique the Bragg wavelengths of the FBG sensors can be accurately detected. In addition, the filter with NMLS-OCF adaptive algorithm performs faster convergence than the other algorithms.

A Tabu-gradient search algorithm is presented for improving the performance of FBG sensors in an intensity and wavelength-division multiplexed sensing system. Simulation results demonstrated that by using this technique the Bragg wavelengths of the FBG sensors can be accurately and quickly detect even when the original spectrums of FBG sensors can not be pre-determined.

We present a novel neural network signal calibration technique to improve the performance of triangulation based structured light profilometers. The performance of such profilometers is often hindered by the capture of noisy and aberrated pattern intensity distributions. We address this problem by employing neural networks and a spatial digital filter in a signal mapping approach. The performance of the calibration technique is gauged through both simulation and experimentation, with simulation results indicating that accuracy can be improved by more than 80%.

This paper presents a new algorithm for fringe pattern parofilometry by utilizing generalized analysis model, called optimal filtering based shift estimation (OFSE) method, which provides much lower complexity compared with traditional methods. Meanwhile, as OFSE is derived based on the generalized analysis model, the reconstruction results will not be influenced by the nonlinearity of fringe pattern projection and acquisition system. The efficiency of the proposed OFSE method is confirmed by simulation results, which show that the accuracy of three-dimensional reconstruction using digital fringe pattern profilometry technique can be much improved and the computational complexity can be significantly reduced.

A hyperthermal and low energy ion beamline to measure electron-hole pair production due to ion bombardment of Schottky diodes has been modified and assembled.
A brief overview of the instrument is given and the reason for operating the ion beamline in the hyperthermal and low energy regime is discussed. The capabilities of the ion beamline are unique and provide the means to measure quantities that offer insight into various energy exchange mechanisms that occur at surfaces. In order to calculate the power spectrum generated during a stage of inflation, we have to specify the quantum state of the inflaton perturbations, which is conventionally assumed to be the Bunch-Davies vacuum. We argue that this choice is justified only if the interactions of cosmological perturbations are strong enough to drive excited states toward the vacuum. We quantify this efficiency by calculating the decay probabilities of excited states to leading order in the slow-roll expansion in canonical single-field inflationary models. These probabilities are suppressed by a slow-roll parameter and the squared Planck mass, and enhanced by ultraviolet and infrared …

This research focuses on superacid perfluoroalkyl(aryl) sulfonimides and their derivatives as a source of stable zwitterionic salts. The strong resonance stabilization of sulfonimides imparts unexpected stability to the zwitterions.
Two types of zwitterions were investigated. The first are symmetrical diaryliodonium zwitterions (DZs) as potential photo acid generators (PAGs) for microlithography. Driven by the demand for smaller feature sizes in the microelectronics industry, microlithography using shorter wavelength light has evolved and new PAGs are of interest. New DZs are potentially useful because they have good thermal stability and may be structurally modified to alter their spectral absorption characteristics. As an extension …

The first-principles density functional molecular dynamics simulations have been carried out to investigate the geometric, the electronic, and the finite temperature properties of pure Li clusters (Li10, Li12) and Al-doped Li clusters (Li10Al, Li10Al2). We find that the addition of two Al impurities in Li10 results in a substantial structural change, while the addition of one Al impurity causes a rearrangement of atoms. Introduction of Al impurities in Li10 establishes a polar bond between Li and nearby Al atom(s), leading to a multicentered bonding, which weakens the Li-Li …

A three-dimensional wave packet generated by a local disturbance in a two-dimensional hypersonic boundary layer flow is studied with the aid of the previously solved initialvalue problem. The solution can be presented as a sum of modes consisting of continuous and discrete spectra of temporal stability theory. Two discrete modes, known as Mode S and Mode F, are of interest in high-speed flows since they may be involved in a laminar-turbulent transition scenario. The presence of an excess of short-lived radionuclides in the early protoplanetary disk has been inferred from studying how the distribution of the abundances, in materials like Ca-Al-rich inclusions, differ from the solar abundance distribution (SAD). The likely source of these radioactivites is a supernova that ejected material into the early solar system. The water quality in the Reedy River basin has been shown to be impacted from the diverse and highly urbanized land uses within the watershed. The objective of this study was to examine the observed toxicological effects of EDCs that may be present in the Reedy River watershed by using a suite of biomarkers that were measured in indigenous fish to characterize the exposure and biological effects of these contaminants. We report the results of a globally coordinated photometric campaign to search for transits by the P ~ 30 day and P ~ 60 day outer planets of the three-planet system orbiting the nearby M dwarf Gl 876. These two planets experience strong mutual perturbations, which necessitate the use of a dynamical (four-body) model to compute transit ephemerides for the system. Our photometric data have been collected from published archival sources, as well as from our photometric campaigns that were targeted to specific transit predictions. Physics

We report on p−Λ,p− ¯Λ¯ ,¯p¯−Λ, and ¯p¯− ¯Λ¯ correlation functions constructed in central Au-Au collisions at √sNN=200 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The proton and lambda source size is inferred from the p−Λ and p− ¯Λ¯; correlation functions. It is found to be smaller than the pion source size also measured by the STAR experiment at smaller transverse masses, in agreement with a scenario of a strong universal collective flow. The ¯p¯− Λ and p− ¯Λ¯ correlation functions, which are measured for the first time, exhibit a large anticorrelation. Annihilation channels and/or a negative real …

Students from Mashpee High School have been studying water quality of local rivers for a number of years. In the past, the primary focus was on two rivers that flow through the town: the Quashnet River, and Quaker Run. This school year (2006-07) the Mashpee River was added as the third watershed of interest. Each of three Earth Science classes adopted and studied one of the rivers. This was a study of two sites along Fall Brook, located in Middleborough, MA. Fall Brook has been monitored by MHS students over the past 10 years and is a major tributary of the Taunton River Watershed. The purpose of the study completed this year was to determine how land use affects the nitrate and phosphate levels of Fall Brook. The Wareham Street Site is located next to a horse farm and downstream from several cranberry bogs in a heavily wooded area. The nonparametric transformation model for survival time that makes no parametric assumptions on both the transformation function and the error is appealing in its flexibility. The nonparametric transformation model makes no assumption on the forms of the transformation function and the error distribution. This model is appealing in its flexibility for modeling censored survival data. Current approaches for estimation of the regression parameters involve maximizing discontinuous objective functions, which are numerically infeasible to implement in the case of multiple covariates. Although saltmarshes are thought to enhance the productivity of open estuarine water, the mechanism by which energy transfer occurs has been debated for decades. One possible mechanism is the transfer of saltmarsh production to estuarine waters by vagile fishes and invertebrates. Monthly estimates of fish standing stock, net fish ingress, and predation were used to develop a bio-mass budget to estimates annual production of fishes and the relative yield to predatory fish, birds, and direct migration to the estuary. Annual production of saltmarsh fishes was estimated to 31.0 gm-2 saltmarsh, which falls within the range of previously reported values …

The purpose of this research is to ascertain potential iris scan data variations from near infrared waves derived from fluorescent illumination. Prior studies of iris data variances from infrared wave interference of halogen, incandescent, and sunlight with iris cameras suggest that similar changes may exist under near infrared wavelengths from fluorescent light. The concern is that the fluorescent energy emission may interfere with the near infrared detection of an iris camera. An iris camera is used to measure human eye characteristics known as biometrics. One mechanism for an intelligent agent to adapt to substantial environmental changes is to change its decision making structure. Pervious work in this area has developed a context-dependent behavior selection architecture that uses structure change, i.e., changing the mutual inhibition structures of a behavior network, as the main mechanism to generate different behavior patterns according to different behavioral contexts.
