Spitzer White Dwarf Planet Limits, F. Mullally, Ted Von Hippel, D. E. Winget Oct 2006

Spitzer White Dwarf Planet Limits, F. Mullally, Ted Von Hippel, D. E. Winget

Publications

We present preliminary limits on the presence of planets around white dwarf stars using the IRAC photometer on the Spitzer space telescope. Planets emit strongly in the mid-infrared which allows their presence to be detected as an excess at these wavelengths. We place limits of 5 MJ for 8 stars assuming ages of 1 Gyr, and 10 MJ for 23 stars. We describe our survey, present our results and comment on approaches to improve our methodology.

Sharing Digital Rights With Domain Licensing, N. P. Sheppard, R. Safavi-Naini Oct 2006

Sharing Digital Rights With Domain Licensing, N. P. Sheppard, R. Safavi-Naini

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Sharing of multimedia content is a common practice that, combined with appropriate business models, need not be detrimental to the interests of content providers. Existing digital rights management systems, however, support only relatively limited sharing of content between multimedia terminals, resulting in inconvenience and frustration for end-users of rights-managed content. In this paper, we propose to combine the notion of an "authorised domain" with an "environment role" to permit end-users to share access to multimedia content within the constraints expressed in a domain licence. We describe how a variety of different business models can be supported using domain licences, and …

Electronic Structure And Polymerization Of A Self-Assembled Monolayer With Multiple Arene Rings, D.Q. Feng, David Wisbey, Yaroslav B. Losovyj, Y. Tai, M. Zharnikov, Peter A. Dowben Oct 2006

Electronic Structure And Polymerization Of A Self-Assembled Monolayer With Multiple Arene Rings, D.Q. Feng, David Wisbey, Yaroslav B. Losovyj, Y. Tai, M. Zharnikov, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

We find evidence of intermolecular interactions for a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formed from a large molecular adsorbate, [1,1′;4′,1′′-terphenyl]-4,4′′-dimethanethiol, from the dispersion of the molecular orbitals with changing wave vector k. With the formation self-assembled molecular (SAM) layer, the molecular orbitals hybridize to electronic bands, with indications of significant band dispersion of the unoccupied molecular orbitals. The electronic structure is also seen to be dependent upon temperature, and cross linking between the neighbor molecules, indicating that the electronic structure may be subtly altered by changes in molecular conformation and packing.

The Legacy Of Leaded Gasoline In Bottom Sediment Of Small Rural Reservoirs, Kyle E. Juracek, Andrew C. Ziegler Oct 2006

The Legacy Of Leaded Gasoline In Bottom Sediment Of Small Rural Reservoirs, Kyle E. Juracek, Andrew C. Ziegler

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The historical and ongoing lead (Pb) contamination caused by the 20th-century use of leaded gasoline was investigated by an analysis of bottom sediment in eight small rural reservoirs in eastern Kansas, USA. For the reservoirs that were completed before or during the period of maximum Pb emissions from vehicles (i.e., the 1940s through the early 1980s) and that had a major highway in the basin, increased Pb concentrations reflected the pattern of historical leaded gasoline use. For at least some of these reservoirs, residual Pb is still being delivered from the basins. There was no evidence of increased Pb deposition …

Search For Pair Production Of Scalar Bottom Quarks In Pp̅ Collisions At √S =1:96 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

A search for direct production of scalar bottom quarks () is performed with 310 pb-1 of data collected by the D0 experiment in pp̅ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The topology analyzed consists of two b jets and an imbalance in transverse momentum due to undetected neutralinos (χ̃10), with χ̃10 assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle. We find the data consistent with standard model expectations, and set a 95% C.L. exclusion domain in the (m, m χ̃10) mass plane, …

A Logistic Regression Analysis Of Utah Colleges Exit Poll Response Rates Using Sas Software, Clint W. Stevenson Oct 2006

A Logistic Regression Analysis Of Utah Colleges Exit Poll Response Rates Using Sas Software, Clint W. Stevenson

Theses and Dissertations

In this study I examine voter response at an interview level using a dataset of 7562 voter contacts (including responses and nonresponses) in the 2004 Utah Colleges Exit Poll. In 2004, 4908 of the 7562 voters approached responded to the exit poll for an overall response rate of 65 percent. Logistic regression is used to estimate factors that contribute to a success or failure of each interview attempt. This logistic regression model uses interviewer characteristics, voter characteristics (both respondents and nonrespondents), and exogenous factors as independent variables. Voter characteristics such as race, gender, and age are strongly associated with response. …

Use Of Unbiased Estimating Equations To Estimate Correlation In Generalized Estimating Equation Analysis Of Longitudinal Trials, Wenguang Sun, Justine Shults, Mary Leonard

Justine Shults

In a recent publication, Wang and Carey (Journal of the American Statistical Association, 99, pp. 845-853, 2004) presented a new approach for estimation of the correlation parameters in the framework of generalized estimating equations (GEE). They considered correlated continuous, binary and count data with a generalized Markov correlation structure that includes the first-order autoregressive AR(1) and Markov structures as special cases. They made detailed comparisons with pseudo-likelihood (PL) and the first stage of quasi-least squares (QLS), a two-stage approach in the framework of generalized estimating equations (GEE). In this note we extend their comparisons for the second (bias corrected) stage …

Censored Data Regression In High-Dimension And Low-Sample Size Settings For Genomic Applications, Hongzhe Li Oct 2006

Censored Data Regression In High-Dimension And Low-Sample Size Settings For Genomic Applications, Hongzhe Li

Hongzhe Li

New high-throughput technologies are generating various types of high-dimensional genomic and proteomic data and meta-data (e.g., networks and pathways) in order to obtain a systems-level understanding of various complex diseases such as human cancers and cardiovascular diseases. As the amount and complexity of the data increase and as the questions being addressed become more sophisticated, we face the great challenge of how to model such data in order to draw valid statistical and biological conclusions. One important problem in genomic research is to relate these high-throughput genomic data to various clinical outcomes, including possibly censored survival outcomes such as age …

Large Cluster Asymptotics For Gee: Working Correlation Models, Hyoju Chung, Thomas Lumley Oct 2006

Large Cluster Asymptotics For Gee: Working Correlation Models, Hyoju Chung, Thomas Lumley

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

This paper presents large cluster asymptotic results for generalized estimating equations. The complexity of working correlation model is characterized in terms of the number of working correlation components to be estimated. When the cluster size is relatively large, we may encounter a situation where a high-dimensional working correlation matrix is modeled and estimated from the data. In the present asymptotic setting, the cluster size and the complexity of working correlation model grow with the number of independent clusters. We show the existence, weak consistency and asymptotic normality of marginal regression parameter estimators using the results of empirical process theory and …

We report specialized interplane magnetoresistance (MR) measurements on the organic superconducting compound β″–(BEDT-TTF)₂SF₅CH₂CF₂SO₃ (where BEDT-TTF is bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene) in both the superconducting (Tc ∼ 5K) and normal states versus magnetic field direction. In the normal state, detailed angular-dependent magnetoresistance oscillation (AMRO) studies reveal peculiar features of the Fermi surface topology of this compound, and very high magnetic field studies further support the unusual nature of the electronic structure. In the superconducting state we investigate, through detailedAMRO measurements, the anomalous MR peak that appears within the superconducting field-temperature phase diagram. Our results reveal a direct connection between the superconducting state determined from …

Indeks Sosio-Ekonomi Menggunakan Principal Component Analysis, Iwan Ariawan

Kesmas

On 28 February 2000, a volcanic cloud from Hekla volcano, Iceland, was serendipitously sampled by a DC-8 research aircraft during the SAGE III Ozone Loss and Validation Experiment (SOLVE I). It was encountered at night at 10.4 km above sea level (in the lower stratosphere) and 33–34 hours after emission. The cloud is readily identified by abundant SO2 (≤1 ppmv), HCl (≤70 ppbv), HF (≤60 ppbv), and particles (which may have included fine silicate ash). We compare observed and modeled cloud compositions to understand its chemical evolution. Abundances of sulfur and halogen species indicate some oxidation of sulfur gases but …

Periodic Boundary Condition Induced Breakdown Of The Equipartition Principle And Other Kinetic Effects Of Finite Sample Size In Classical Hard-Sphere Molecular Dynamics Simulation, Randall B. Shirts, Scott R. Burt, Aaron M. Johnson

Faculty Publications

We examine consequences of the non-Boltzmann nature of probability distributions for one-particle kinetic energy, momentum, and velocity for finite systems of classical hard spheres with constant total energy and nonidentical masses. By comparing two cases, reflecting walls (NVE or microcanonical ensemble) and periodic boundaries (NVEPG or molecular dynamics ensemble), we describe three consequences of the center-of-mass constraint in periodic boundary conditions: the equipartition theorem no longer holds for unequal masses, the ratio of the average relative velocity to the average velocity is increased by a factor of [N/(N–1)]^1/2, and the ratio of average collision energy to average kinetic energy is …

Provenance Of A Garnet-Rich Beach Placer Deposit, Montauk Point, Long Island, Ny, Nazrul I. Khandaker, Stanley Schleifer, Zarine Ali, Olalekan Jemilugba

Publications and Research

Garnet and magnetite rich sand, also enriched in monazite and zircon, has been observed and sampled near Montauk Point, Long Island. The sediment is derived from the glacial till and stratified drift of the Ronkonkoma Moraine by mechanical weathering and erosion due to wave action at Montauk Point, the headland on the eastern tip of Long Island. Sand sized sediment is moved westward along the southern shore of Long Island by longshore transport. The garnet and magnetite components of this sediment are significantly denser than the quartzo-feldspathic components. This allows for hydraulic segregation of these components, by wave action, …

We present results based on mid-infrared (3.6-30 μm) observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope of the nearby Type IIP supernova 2005af. We report the first ever detection of the SiO molecule in a Type IIP supernova. Together with the detection of the CO fundamental, this is an exciting finding as it may signal the onset of dust condensation in the ejecta. From a wealth of fine-structure lines we provide abundance estimates for stable Ni, Ar, and Ne that, via spectral synthesis, may be used to constrain nucleosynthesis models.

The Importance Of Emerging Biobased Industries To Engineering And Technology, Kurt A. Rosentrater, R. Balamuralikrishma Oct 2006

The Importance Of Emerging Biobased Industries To Engineering And Technology, Kurt A. Rosentrater, R. Balamuralikrishma

Kurt A. Rosentrater

Our society has developed an insatiable demand for energy and material goods. Historically, these needs have been met primarily by fossil fuels and other non-renewable raw materials. As environmental concerns grow, however, renewable resources are gaining increased attention. This paper examines the emergence and importance that biobased industries are increasingly beginning to play. A biobased enterprise, similar in concept to a traditional refinery or factory, utilizes conversion technologies to produce various products. These operations are rapidly increasing both in number as well as in capacity throughout this country, and are poised to add significantly to the nation’s energy and material …

Analytical And Experimental Studies Of Properties Of Ethanol Coproduct-Filled Plastics, Robert Tatara, Andrew Otieno, Srikrishna Suraparaju, Kurt A. Rosentrater

Kurt A. Rosentrater

As the renewable fuels industry continues to grow, the quantity of resulting byproducts has expanded in tandem. Currently, these materials are primarily used for animal feed, but at some point will saturate the animal feeds market. Thus, it is necessary to investigate alternative methods and applications by which these coproducts can be utilized. One potential application for these process residues involves plastics manufacturing. Due, in part, to the increasing cost of resins and conventional fillers, alternate fillers have been increasingly sought. Many of these include biological materials such as grasses, bamboo, starch, chicken feathers, soy protein, and cellulose. Not only …

Application Of Coulomb Wave Function Discrete Variable Representation To Atomic Systems In Strong Laser Fields, Liang-You Peng, Anthony F. Starace Oct 2006

Application Of Coulomb Wave Function Discrete Variable Representation To Atomic Systems In Strong Laser Fields, Liang-You Peng, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

We present an efficient and accurate grid method for solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for an atomic system interacting with an intense laser pulse. Instead of the usual finite difference (FD) method, the radial coordinate is discretized using the discrete variable representation (DVR) constructed from Coulomb wave functions. For an accurate description of the ionization dynamics of atomic systems, the Coulomb wave function discrete variable representation (CWDVR) method needs three to ten times fewer grid points than the FD method. The resultant grid points of the CWDVR are distributed unevenly so that one has a finer grid near the origin …

Measurements And Analysis Of Helium-Like Triplet Ratios In The X-Ray Spectra Of O-Type Stars, M. A. Leutenegger, F. B.S. Paerels, S. M. Kahn, David H. Cohen Oct 2006

Measurements And Analysis Of Helium-Like Triplet Ratios In The X-Ray Spectra Of O-Type Stars, M. A. Leutenegger, F. B.S. Paerels, S. M. Kahn, David H. Cohen

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

We discuss new methods of measuring and interpreting the forbidden-to-intercombination line ratios of heliumlike triplets in the X-ray spectra of O- type stars, including accounting for the spatial distribution of the X-ray-emitting plasma and using the detailed photospheric UV spectrum. Measurements are made for four O stars using archival Chandra HETGS data. We assume an X- ray-emitting plasma spatially distributed in the wind above some minimum radius R-0. We find minimum radii of formation typically in the range of 1.25 < R-0 / R-* < 1.67, which is consistent with results obtained independently from line profile fits. We find no evidence for anomalously low f / i ratios, and we do not require the existence of X-ray-emitting plasmas at radii that are too small to generate sufficiently strong shocks.

Search For Neutral, Long-Lived Particles Decaying Into Two Muons In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1:96 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present a search for a neutral particle, pair produced in pp̅ collisions at√s = 1.96 TeV, which decays into two muons and lives long enough to travel at least 5 cm before decaying. The analysis uses ≈ 380 pb-1 of data recorded with the D0 detector. The background is estimated to be about one event. No candidates are observed, and limits are set on the pair-production cross section times branching fraction into dimuons + X for such particles. For a mass of 10 GeVand lifetime of 4 × 10-11 s, we exclude values greater than 0.14 pb …

Search For The Standard Model Higgs Boson In The Pp̅→ Zh → Νν̅Bb̅ Channel, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report a search for the standard model (SM) Higgs boson based on data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 260 pb-1. We study events with missing transverse energy and two acoplanar b jets, which provide sensitivity to the ZH production cross section in the νν̅bb̅ channel, and to WH production when the lepton from the W → ℓν decay is undetected. The data are consistent with the SM background expectation, and we set 95% C.L. upper limits on σ(pp̅ZH/WH) × …

The P14 Fusion-Associated Small Transmembrane (Fast) Protein Effects Membrane Fusion From A Subset Of Membrane Microdomains, Jennifer A. Corcoran, Jayme Salsman, Roberto De Antueno, Ahmed Touhami, Manfred H. Jericho, Eileen K. Clancy, Roy Duncan

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

The reovirus fusion-associated small transmembrane (FAST) proteins are a unique family of viral membrane fusion proteins. These nonstructural viral proteins induce efficient cell-cell rather than virus-cell membrane fusion. We analyzed the lipid environment in which the reptilian reovirus p14 FAST protein resides to determine the influence of the cell membrane on the fusion activity of the FAST proteins. Topographical mapping of the surface of fusogenic p14-containing liposomes by atomic force microscopy under aqueous conditions revealed that p14 resides almost exclusively in thickened membrane microdomains. In transfected cells, p14 was found in both Lubrol WX-and Triton X-100-resistant membrane complexes. Cholesterol depletion …

Casimir Forces And Non-Newtonian Gravitation, Roberto Onofrio Oct 2006

Casimir Forces And Non-Newtonian Gravitation, Roberto Onofrio

Dartmouth Scholarship

The search for non-relativistic deviations from Newtonian gravitation can lead to new phenomena signalling the unification of gravity with the other fundamental interactions. Various recent theoretical frameworks indicate a possible window for non-Newtonian forces with gravitational coupling strength in the micrometre range. The major expected background in the same range is attributable to the Casimir force or variants of it if dielectric materials, rather than conducting ones, are considered. Here we review the measurements of the Casimir force performed so far in the micrometre range and how they determine constraints on non-Newtonian gravitation, also discussing the dominant sources of false …

Statistical Analysis Of Air Pollution Panel Studies: An Illustration, Holly Janes, Lianne Sheppard, Kristen Shepherd

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The panel study design is commonly used to evaluate the short-term health effects of air pollution. Standard statistical methods for analyzing longitudinal data are available, but the literature reveals that the techniques are not well understood by practitioners. We illustrate these methods using data from the 1999 to 2002 Seattle panel study. Marginal, conditional, and transitional approaches for modeling longitudinal data are reviewed and contrasted with respect to their parameter interpretation and methods for accounting for correlation and dealing with missing data. We also discuss and illustrate techniques for controlling for time-dependent and time-independent confounding, and for exploring and summarizing …
