Research in Earth and Environmental Sciences is becoming increasingly quantitative and process-based. This trend is driven by the widespread availability of digital data sets and high-power computing as well as the need to develop predictive models of earth processes to address societal problems. To address these changes in the field I integrate traditional aspects of structural geology including field observation and three-dimensional visualization with quantitative process-based methods in a series of topical course modules. Although the Permian Capitan depositional system is perhaps one of the best-exposed and most thoroughly studied steep-rimmed carbonate systems, the role of synsedimentary deformation in the development of the platform geometry is still poorly understood. We have undertaken an effort to map 3D stratal and structural architecture in two regions of the Guadalupe Mountains, Slaughter and Big Canyons, to better constrain present-day geometry and quantify the distribution and magnitude of syn- and post-depositional deformation. The resulting 3D geologic models serve to inform and constrain mechanical models aimed at understanding the process of synsedimentary deformation, including formation of early fracture systems …

The stratal geometry of the Permian Capitan Reef Complex has been influenced by syn-sedimentary deformation including tilting, folding, Previous HitfracturingTop, and faulting of strata. The importance of these effects has been a topic of debate for decades and impacts our understanding of the initial sedimentary geometry as well as the distribution of early-formed fracture systems. We use geomechanical finite element modeling to predict the magnitude and distribution of syn-sedimentary deformation associated with a prograding shelf margin. Sustainable development would require the United States to maintain and improve human prosperity while at the same time greatly reducing its consumption of energy, materials, water, and land. The scope of the challenge includes, but is not limited to, climate change. This Article suggests the elements of a legal structure for achieving sustainability.
Because achieving sustainable development is a significant learning experience, the United States will need to employ a form of governance—reflexive governance—that requires constant learning and supportive citizens and stakeholders who are also working to ensure sustainability in their own activities. Use of a square-wave potential program for time-dependent amperometric detection of analyte zones in capillary electrophoresis (CE) is described. Electrochemical detection for CE requires that the separation field be isolated from that of the electrochemical detection. This is generally done by physically separating the CE separation field from that of the detection. By applying a time variant potential program to the detection electrode, the detector current has a time dependence that can be used to help isolate the electrochemical detection current from that of the separation. When using a 20 μm inner-diameter capillary, we find that a square-wave potential program …

The propagation of coherent, polarized light in a nematic liquid crystal, governed by the nematicon equations, is considered. It is found that in the special case of 1 + 1 dimensions and the highly nonlocal limit, the nematicon equations have an asymptotic bulk solitary wave solution, termed a nematicon, which is given in terms of Bessel functions. This asymptotic solution gives both the ground state and the symmetric and antisymmetric excited states, which have multiple peaks. Numerical simulations of nematicon evolution, for parameters corresponding to experimental scenarios, are presented. It is found, for experimentally reasonable parameter choices, that the validity …

Electricity spot prices exhibit strong time series properties, including substantial periodicity, both inter-day and intraday serial correlation, heavy tails and skewness. In this paper we capture these characteristics using a first order vector autoregressive model with exogenous effects and a skew t distributed disturbance. The vector is longitudinal, in that it comprises observations on the spot price at intervals during a day. A band two inverse scale matrix is employed for the disturbance, as well as a sparse autoregressive coefficient matrix. This corresponds to a parsimonious dependency structure that directly relates an observation to the two immediately prior, and the …

This article explores the early evolution of the structure and management of gameplay in videogames. We introduce the notion of gameplay segmentation to capture the role that design elements like level, boss, and wave play in videogames, and identify three modes of segmentation. Temporal segmentation limits, synchronizes and/or coordinates player activity over time. Spatial segmentation breaks the game’s virtual space into sub-locations. Challenge segmentation presents the player with a sequence of self-contained challenges. We describe each mode, and additional sub-modes, by analyzing vintage arcade games. Our analyses illustrate how these games represent a “primordial soup” in which many current game …

The past 15 years have witnessed a rapid growth in computational modeling of emotion and cognitive-affective architectures. Architectures are being built both to elucidate mechanisms of emotions, and to enhance believability and effectiveness of synthetic agents and robots. Yet in spite of the many emotion models developed to date, there is a lack of consistency, and clarity, regarding what exactly it means to ‘model emotions’. This article explains why policy makers should seriously consider substantial early reductions in greenhouse gas emissions as a part of any post-Kyoto framework, and sets out suggested elements of a framework for early action in a post-Kyoto agreement. Substantial early reductions are needed because of the growing urgency of the climate change science, the precautionary approach identified in the Framework Convention on Climate Change as a decision-making principle, the fact that cost-effective measures are now available, and the significant non-climate benefits (security, economic, social, and environmental) that can be achieved by implementing them. α2-Macroglobulin (α2M) is a major human blood glycoprotein best known for its ability to inhibit a broad spectrum of proteases by a unique trapping method. This action induces an “activated” conformation of α2M with an exposed binding site for the low density lipoprotein receptor, facilitating clearance of α2M-protease complexes from the body. This report establishes that protease activation also modulates a potent chaperone-like action of α2M which has broad specificity for proteins partly unfolded as a result of heat or oxidative stress. Protease-mediated activation of α2M abolishes its chaperone-like activity. However, native α2M is able to form soluble complexes with …

The interaction of two symmetric solitary waves, termed nematicons, in a liquid crystal is considered in the limit of nonlocal response of the liquid crystal. This nonlocal limit is the applicable limit for most experimentally available liquid crystals. In this nonlocal limit, two separate cases for the initial separation of the nematicons are considered, these being large and small separation. Both spinning and nonspinning nematicons are considered. It is found that in the case of large initial separation, the nematicons can form a spinning or nonspinning bound state with a finite steady separation, this being called a nematicon dipole, when …

Affective gaming has received much attention lately, as the gaming community recognizes the importance of emotion in the development of engaging games. Affect plays a key role in the user experience, both in entertainment and in ‘serious’ games. Current focus in affective gaming is primarily on the sensing and recognition of the players’ emotions, and on tailoring the game responses to these emotions. Emotions exert a profound influence on cognitive processes, both the fundamental processes mediating cognition, such as attention and memory, and higher-level processes including decision-making and learning. A number of emotion effects on cognition have been identified, but their mechanisms are not yet understood. In this paper I describe a methodology for modeling the effects of emotion on cognition, within a symbolic cognitive-affective architecture. The primary objective of the approach is to facilitate the construction of alternative mechanisms of observed emotion effects.
