Challenges In Radiative Transfer Modeling - W3 Irs5, Lent C. Johnson Iv Oct 2008

Challenges In Radiative Transfer Modeling - W3 Irs5, Lent C. Johnson Iv

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

By modeling the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the W3 IRS5 high-mass star formation region and matching this model to observed data, we can constrain the physical parameters of the basic system geometry and cloud mass distribution. From these parameters, we hope to add to the understanding of high-mass star formation processes. In particular, we hope to determine if the geometries associated with lowmass star formation carry over into the high-mass regime.

Neutral pion transverse momentum (pT) spectra at midrapidity (jyj & 0:35) were measured in Cu þ Cu collisions at ffiffiffiffiffiffiffiffi sNN p ¼ 22:4, 62.4, and 200 GeV. Relative to 0 yields in p þ p collisions scaled by the number of inelastic nucleon-nucleon collisions (Ncoll) the 0 yields for pT * 2 GeV=c in central Cu þ Cu collisions are suppressed at 62.4 and 200 GeV whereas an enhancement is observed at 22.4 GeV. A comparison with a jet-quenching model suggests that final state parton energy loss dominates in central Cu þ Cu collisions at 62.4 and 200 GeV, …

Floodplain Deposits, Channel Changes And Riverbank Stratigraphy Of The Mekong River Area At The 14th-Century City Of Chiang Saen, Northern Thailand., Spencer H. Wood, Alan D. Ziegler, Tharaporn Bundarnsin

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Riverbank stratigraphy and paleochannel patterns of the Mekong River at Chiang Saen provide a geoarchaeological framework to explore for evidence of Neolithic, Bronze-age, AD 5th Century Yonok and AD 14-16th Century Lan Na Cultures. Typical bank stratigraphy charted on the Thailand side is imbricate cobble gravel overlain by 5-10 m of reddish-brown sandy silt. The silt section is composed chiefly of ½ to 2-m thick layers of massive silt without paleosols interpreted as near-channel floodplain and gently-inclined levee deposits laid down by episodic, infrequent, large floods. The surface soil is dark-brown clay loam (La Na time. Brick ruins of 14-16th …

A New Activity Phase Of The Blazar 3c 454.3 Multifrequency Observations By The Webt And Xmm-Newton In 2007-2008, Niall Smith, Et. Al.

Blackrock Castle Observatory Publications

Aims: The Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) consortium has been monitoring the blazar 3C 454.3 from the radio to the optical bands since 2004 to study its emission variability properties.

Methods: We present and analyse the multifrequency results of the 2007-2008 observing season, including XMM-Newton observations and near-IR spectroscopic monitoring, and compare the recent emission behaviour with the past one. The historical mm light curve is presented here for the first time.

Results: In the optical band we observed a multi-peak outburst in July-August 2007, and other faster events in November 2007-February 2008. During these outburst phases, several episodes of …

Chrystal D. Bruce

Imidazole (Im) and Pyrrole (Py)-containing polyamides that can form stacked dimers can be programmed to target specific sequences in the minor groove of DNA and control gene expression. Even though various designs of polyamides have been thoroughly investigated for DNA sequence recognition, the use of H-pin polyamides (covalently cross-linked polyamides) has not received as much attention. Therefore, experiments were designed to systematically investigate the DNA recognition properties of two symmetrical H-pin polyamides composed of PyImPyIm (5) or f-ImPyIm (3e, f=formamido) tethered with an ethylene glycol linker. These compounds were created to recognize the cognate 5′-ACGCGT-3′ through an overlapped and staggered …
