Contributing Factors To Pointcut Fragility, Phil Greenwood, Awais Rashid, Raffi T. Khatchadourian Oct 2009

Contributing Factors To Pointcut Fragility, Phil Greenwood, Awais Rashid, Raffi T. Khatchadourian

Publications and Research

Pointcut fragility is a well-documented problem of Aspect-Oriented Programming with changes to the base-code causing join points to incorrectly fall in or out of scope. In order to combat this problem a tool was developed that provides mechanical assistance to pointcut maintenance. This tool relied on the deep structural commonalities between program elements to detect when pointcut fragility occurs. During the assessment of this tool a number of common practices were uncovered that were employed both in the aspect and base-code that contributed to or prevented pointcut fragility. This paper documents the practices uncovered and describes how they can affect …

Observations Of Neck-Collared Canada Geese Near John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, Thomas W. Seamans, Scott E. Clemons, Allen L. Gosser

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Canada geese (Branta canadensis) often cause significant damage when they strike aircraft. They are responsible for a reported minimum of $2.6 million in damage per year to civil aviation in the United States. Knowledge of goose movements in relation to airports would allow wildlife managers to allocate time and funds to manage those populations that pose the greatest threat to aircraft. We placed alpha-numeric neck collars on 300 Canada geese within 8 km of both John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFKIA) and LaGuardia Airport in New York, New York. We conducted weekly observations for 2 years within a …

Richard A. Dolbeer: Scientist, Innovator, Manager, And Mentor, Bradley F. Blackwelll, Travis L. Devault

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Richard A. Dolbeer retired in September 2008 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Wildlife Services (WS) program. Over the last 30 years, his research has encompassed the areas of population dynamics of pest species, economic assessment of losses, development of practical management techniques for resolving human–wildlife conflicts, and integrated pest management programs in the United States and abroad (Africa, Asia, Latin America). Most notably, he is one of a few individuals who recognized, early on, the cost in lives and property due to wildlife collisions with aircraft and that much of that cost is avoidable through the application of findings …

Mining Globally Distributed Frequent Subgraphs In A Single Labeled Graph, Xing Jiang, Hui Xiong, Chen Wang, Ah-Hwee Tan Oct 2009

Mining Globally Distributed Frequent Subgraphs In A Single Labeled Graph, Xing Jiang, Hui Xiong, Chen Wang, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent years have observed increasing efforts on graph mining and many algorithms have been developed for this purpose. However, most of the existing algorithms are designed for discovering frequent subgraphs in a set of labeled graphs only. Also, the few algorithms that find frequent subgraphs in a single labeled graph typically identify subgraphs appearing regionally in the input graph. In contrast, for real-world applications, it is commonly required that the identified frequent subgraphs in a single labeled graph should also be globally distributed. This paper thus fills this crucial void by proposing a new measure, termed G-Measure, to find globally …

Broadband Records Of Earthquakes In Deep Gold Mines And A Comparison With Results From Safod, California, Art Mcgarr, Margaret S. Boettcher, Jon Peter B. Fletcher, R Sell, Malcolm J. Johnston, R Durrheim, S Spottiswoode, A Milev

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

For one week during September 2007, we deployed a temporary network of field recorders and accelerometers at four sites within two deep, seismically active mines. The ground-motion data, recorded at 200 samples/sec, are well suited to determining source and ground-motion parameters for the mining-induced earthquakes within and adjacent to our network. Four earthquakes with magnitudes close to 2 were recorded with high signal/noise at all four sites. Analysis of seismic moments and peak velocities, in conjunction with the results of laboratory stick-slip friction experiments, were used to estimate source processes that are key to understanding source physics and to assessing …

Mapping and charting of the seafloor underwent a revolution approximately 20 years ago with the introduction of multibeam sonars -- sonars that provided complete, high-resolution coverage of the seafloor rather than sparse measurements. The initial focus of these sonar systems was the charting of depths in support of safety of navigation and offshore exploration; more recently innovations in processing software have led to approaches to characterize seafloor type and for mapping seafloor habitat in support of fisheries research. In recent years, a new generation of multibeam sonars has been developed that, for the first time, have the ability to map …

Nonlinear Power Spectrum In The Presence Of Massive Neutrinos: Perturbation Theory Approach, Galaxy Bias, And Parameter Forecasts, Shun Saito, Masahiro Takada, Atsushi Taruya

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Future or ongoing galaxy redshift surveys can put stringent constraints on neutrinos masses via the high-precision measurements of galaxy power spectrum, when combined with CMB information. In this paper we develop a method to model galaxy power spectrum in the weakly nonlinear regime for a mixed dark matter [cold dark matter (CDM) plus finite-mass neutrinos] model, based on perturbation theory (PT) whose validity is well tested by simulations for a CDM model. In doing this we carefully study various aspects of the nonlinear clustering (nonlinear neutrino perturbations and the higher-order growth functions), and then arrive at a useful approximation allowing …

Determining The Gasb/Gaas-(2 × 8) Reconstruction, Jessica E. Bickel, Normand A. Modine, Joanna Mirecki Millunchick

Physics Faculty Publications

Highly strained thin layers of GaSb/GaAs possess a (2 × 4) reconstruction at low Sb overpressures, and a (2 × 8) reconstruction at high Sb overpressures. While the atomic details of the Sb/GaAs-(2 × 4) are well known, the details of the (2 × 8) are not understood. In this paper, we use density functional theory to analyze possible (2 × 8) structures. Comparing scanning tunneling microscope images from both simulation and experiment and examining the relative energies of possible (2 × 8) structures, we show the α(2 × 8) and β(2 × 8) are the thermodynamically stable surface reconstructions …

Reinforcing The Number Of Disjoint Spanning Trees, Damin Liu, Hong-Jian Lai, Zhi-Hong Chen Oct 2009

Reinforcing The Number Of Disjoint Spanning Trees, Damin Liu, Hong-Jian Lai, Zhi-Hong Chen

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The spanning tree packing number of a connected graph G, denoted by T(G), is the maximum number of edge-disjoint spanning trees of G. In this paper, we determine the minimum number of edges that must be added to G so that the resulting graph has spanning tree packing number at least k, for a given value of k.

Effects Of Tide Gate Replacement On Water Temperature In A Freshwater Slough In The Columbia River Estuary, Sara Ennis Oct 2009

Effects Of Tide Gate Replacement On Water Temperature In A Freshwater Slough In The Columbia River Estuary, Sara Ennis

Environmental Science and Management Professional Master's Project Reports

Dramatic declines in salmon populations in the Pacific Northwest have brought new attention to the importance of estuarine rearing habitats. Levees and tide gates used to convert estuarine wetlands into farmland have reduced available habitat by more than half of historical levels. Recent efforts to restore estuarine habitats include tide gate replacement, though this method has been poorly studied. As a key indicator of salmon habitat suitability, temperature was used to evaluate the effects of tide gate replacement in a tidally influenced freshwater slough in the Lower Columbia River estuary. Three tide gates in the largest slough on Tenasillahe Island …

Domain Adaptive Semantic Diffusion For Large Scale Context-Based Video Annotation, Yu-Gang Jiang, Jun Wang, Shih-Fu Chang, Chong-Wah Ngo Oct 2009

Domain Adaptive Semantic Diffusion For Large Scale Context-Based Video Annotation, Yu-Gang Jiang, Jun Wang, Shih-Fu Chang, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Learning to cope with domain change has been known as a challenging problem in many real-world applications. This paper proposes a novel and efficient approach, named domain adaptive semantic diffusion (DASD), to exploit semantic context while considering the domain-shift-of-context for large scale video concept annotation. Starting with a large set of concept detectors, the proposed DASD refines the initial annotation results using graph diffusion technique, which preserves the consistency and smoothness of the annotation over a semantic graph. Different from the existing graph learning methods which capture relations among data samples, the semantic graph treats concepts as nodes and the …

Analyzing The Video Popularity Characteristics Of Large-Scale User Generated Content Systems, Meeyoung Cha, Haewoon Kwak, Pablo Rodriguez, Yong-Yeol Ahn, Sue Moon

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

User generated content (UGC), now with millions of video producers and consumers, is re-shaping the way people watch video and TV. In particular, UGC sites are creating new viewing patterns and social interactions, empowering users to be more creative, and generating new business opportunities. Compared to traditional video-on-demand (VoD) systems, UGC services allow users to request videos from a potentially unlimited selection in an asynchronous fashion. To better understand the impact of UGC services, we have analyzed the world's largest UGC VoD system, YouTube, and a popular similar system in Korea, Daum Videos. In this paper, we first empirically show …

Versatile Reactive Navigation, Robert P. Burton, Luther A. Tychonievich, Louis P. Tychonievich

Faculty Publications

Most autonomous mobile agents operate in a highly constrained environment. Despite significant research, existing solutions are limited in their ability to handle heterogeneous constraints within highly dynamic or uncertain environments. This paper presents a novel maneuver selection technique suited for both 2D and 3D environments with highly dynamic maneuvering constraints and multiple mobile obstacles. Agents may have any arbitrary set of nonholonomic control variables; maneuvers can be constrained by a broad class of function inequalities, including time-dependent constraints involving nonlinear relationships between controlled and agent-state variables. The resulting algorithm has been implemented to run in real time using only a …
