Application Of The Explicit Asymptotic Method To Nuclear Burning In Type Ia Supernova, Christopher Ryan Smith Aug 2009

Application Of The Explicit Asymptotic Method To Nuclear Burning In Type Ia Supernova, Christopher Ryan Smith

Masters Theses

Modern problems in astrophysics tend to require large, complex computational frameworks to solve many aspects of the system simultaneusly. Calculation of the energy production through nuclear reactions is typically one of those aspects. The use of standard nuclear burning algorithms will take up the majority of the computational time with all but the smallest of networks. The explicit asymptotic method has shown promise in computing large networks faster than existing methods in various environments while retaining accuracy. The purpose of this thesis is to show that this method can be successfully used to solve complex systems using a network of …

Local Adaptive Smoothing In Kernel Regression Estimation, Qi Zheng Aug 2009

Local Adaptive Smoothing In Kernel Regression Estimation, Qi Zheng

All Theses

We consider nonparametric estimation of a smooth regression function of one variable. In practice it is quite popular to use the data to select one global smoothing parameter. Such global selection procedures cannot sufficiently account for local sparseness of the covariate nor can they adapt to local curvature of the regression function. We propose a new method to select local smoothing parameters which takes into account sparseness and adapts to local curvature of the regression function. A Bayesian method allows the smoothing parameter to adapt to the local sparseness of the covariate and provides the basis for a local cross …

Non-Rigid Multi-Modal Object Tracking Using Gaussian Mixture Models, Prakash Chockalingam Aug 2009

Non-Rigid Multi-Modal Object Tracking Using Gaussian Mixture Models, Prakash Chockalingam

All Theses

This work presents an approach to visual tracking based on dividing a target into multiple regions, or fragments. The target is represented by a Gaussian mixture model in a joint feature-spatial space, with each ellipsoid corresponding to a different fragment. The fragment set and its cardinality are automatically adapted to the image data using an efficient region-growing procedure and updated according to a weighted average of the past and present image statistics. The fragment modeling is used to generate a strength map indicating the probability of each pixel belonging to the foreground. The strength map provides vital information about new …

Single Command Rendering With Sun Grid Engine, William Robinson Aug 2009

Single Command Rendering With Sun Grid Engine, William Robinson

All Theses

According to the Autodesk website, Autodesk Maya software is a powerful, integrated 3D modeling, animation, visual effects, and rendering solution. While this statement is true in every sense, one quality that this software and its competitors lack is in the area of resource management. Though not as critical to the other tasks in the production line, resource management is a crucial component of successful rendering. Until recently, Digital Production Arts students have been left to their own means to manage the rendering process; however, with the use of Sun Grid Engine, rendering tasks can be simplified to a single-command process, …

Measurements of the neutral current cross sections for deep inelastic scattering in e - p collisions at HERA with a longitudinally polarised electron beam are presented. The single-differential cross-sections d σ/dQ 2, d σ/dx and d σ/dy and the double-differential cross sections in Q 2 and x are measured in the kinematic region y185∈GeV 2 for both positively and negatively polarised electron beams and for each polarisation state separately. The measurements are based on an integrated luminosity of 169.9∈pb -1 taken with the ZEUS detector in 2005 and 2006 at a centre-of-mass energy of 318∈GeV. The structure functions F3 and …

Fluorescence Polarization Of Atomic, Dissociated Atomic, And Molecular Transitions Induced By Spin-Polarized Electron Impact, Jack W. Maseberg Aug 2009

Fluorescence Polarization Of Atomic, Dissociated Atomic, And Molecular Transitions Induced By Spin-Polarized Electron Impact, Jack W. Maseberg

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Excitation of atoms by spin-polarized electron impact yields fluorescence that can generally exhibit both linear and circular polarization. For experiments where the scattered electrons are not detected, symmetry requires that the electron beam be spin polarized in order for non-zero circular polarization to be observed. Extensive theoretical and experimental investigations have been performed regarding fluorescence polarizations (Stokes parameters) resulting from spin-polarized electron impact excitation of atoms. Measurement of fluorescence polarization provides insight into the angular momentum coupling that exists in the atomic state of interest. It also enables the measurement of electron spin polarization and experimental benchmarking of theoretical atomic …

Regioselective Intermolecular Coupling Reaction Of Arylketones And Alkenes Involving C-H Bond Activation Catalyzed By An In Situ Formed Cationic Ruthenium-Hydride Complex, Chae S. Yi, Do W. Lee

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The cationic ruthenium hydride complex, formed in situ from the treatment of the tetranuclear ruthenium hydride complex {[(PCy3)(CO)RuH]44-O)(μ3-OH)(μ2-OH)} with HBF4·OEt2, was found to be a highly effective catalyst for the intermolecular coupling reaction of arylketones and 1-alkenes to give the substituted indene and ortho-C−H insertion products. The formation of the indene products resulted from the initial alkene isomerization followed by regioselective ortho-C−H insertion of 2-alkene and dehydrative cyclization. The preliminary mechanistic studies revealed a rapid and reversible ortho-C−H bond activation followed by the …

A Trust-Based Multiagent System, Richard S. Seymour, Gilbert L. Peterson Aug 2009

A Trust-Based Multiagent System, Richard S. Seymour, Gilbert L. Peterson

Faculty Publications

Cooperative agent systems often do not account for sneaky agents who are willing to cooperate when the stakes are low and take selfish, greedy actions when the rewards rise. Trust modeling often focuses on identifying the appropriate trust level for the other agents in the environment and then using these levels to determine how to interact with each agent. Adding trust to an interactive partially observable Markov decision process (I-POMDP) allows trust levels to be continuously monitored and corrected enabling agents to make better decisions. The addition of trust modeling increases the decision process calculations, and solves more complex trust …

Structure And Properties Of Maximal Outerplanar Graphs., Benjamin Allgeier Aug 2009

Structure And Properties Of Maximal Outerplanar Graphs., Benjamin Allgeier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Outerplanar graphs are planar graphs that have a plane embedding in which each vertex lies on the boundary of the exterior region. An outerplanar graph is maximal outerplanar if the graph obtained by adding an edge is not outerplanar. Maximal outerplanar graphs are also known as triangulations of polygons. The spine of a maximal outerplanar graph G is the dual graph of G without the vertex that corresponds to the exterior region. In this thesis we study metric properties involving geodesic intervals, geodetic sets, Steiner sets, different concepts of boundary, and also relationships between the independence numbers and domination numbers …

Creek, Yuxiang Dong, Jacques Chollet, Christian Scheurer, Sergio Wittlin, Susan A. Charman, Patrick H. Dussault, James K. Wood, Jonathan L. Vennerstrom

Chemistry Faculty Publications

These data suggest that iron(II) reactivity for a set of homologous spiroadamantyl 1,2,4-trioxolane, 1,2,4-trioxane, and 1,2,4-trioxepane peroxide heterocycles is a necessary, but insufficient, property of animalarial peroxides. Heme alkylation efficiency appears to give a more accurate prediction of antimalarial activity than FeSO4-mediated reaction rates, suggesting that antimalarial activity is not merely dependent on peroxide bond cleavage, but also on the ability of reactive intermediates to alkylate heme or other proximal targets.

Near-Surface Atmospheric Response To Simulated Changes In Land-Cover Vegetation Fraction, And Soil Moisture Over Western Kentucky, Ronnie Leeper Aug 2009

Near-Surface Atmospheric Response To Simulated Changes In Land-Cover Vegetation Fraction, And Soil Moisture Over Western Kentucky, Ronnie Leeper

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A series of land-use-land-cover-change (LULCC) based sensitivity experiments, including changes in vegetation type, fractional vegetation (FV), and soil moisture (SM), over Western Kentucky were conducted to investigate atmospheric response to land-use. The choice of land-use for this study was chosen in the context of Western Kentucky’s historical LULCC. For this study, vegetation types considered were grassland, forest, and bare soil with further variations in FV for grassland and forest at 25, 50, 75, and 100 % and systematic increases and decreases in volumetric SM of 0.05, 0.10, and 0.15 m3 m-3. To the author’s knowledge, this is the first assessment …

Optimization Models For Designing Spatially Compact Ecological Reserve Systems, Lakmali Weerasena Aug 2009

Optimization Models For Designing Spatially Compact Ecological Reserve Systems, Lakmali Weerasena

All Theses

Over the past decades, a number of mathematical models and solution techniques have been developed to preserve reserve sites for species and their natural habitats. Two optimization models for designing spatially compact ecological reserve systems are addressed here as zero-one integer programming problems. These formulations have a bicriteria objective function that is a combination of both boundary length and distance. The two formulations cluster the sites into a relatively small number of compact groups while preserving a required number of sites that contain a certain species using a given amount of resources. Two general types of approaches have been developed …

Fair Electronic Exchange Using Biometrics, Harkeerat Bedi Aug 2009

Fair Electronic Exchange Using Biometrics, Harkeerat Bedi

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Fair exchange between two parties can be defined as an instance of exchange such that either both parties obtain what they expected or neither one does. Protocols that facilitate such transactions are known as “fair exchange protocols”. We analyze one such protocol by Micali that demonstrates fair contract signing, where two parties exchange their commitments over an already negotiated contract. In this research we show that Micali’s protocol is not completely fair and demonstrate the possibilities for one party cheating by obtaining the other party’s commitment and not offer theirs. A revised version of this protocol by Bao provides superior …
