Analysis Of Channel Networks And The Potential For Sediment Transport In The Vicinity Of The North Polar Seas Of Titan, Richard Cartwright
Analysis Of Channel Networks And The Potential For Sediment Transport In The Vicinity Of The North Polar Seas Of Titan, Richard Cartwright
Geosciences Theses
This study analyzes the available radar evidence in order to describe the morphology of channel networks around the north polar seas of Titan. Critical flow depths necessary to entrain water-ice grains, and denudation rates for a north polar channel network are discussed. The results indicate that channel networks on Titan have similar morphologies to channel networks cut by water on Earth. We also find that water-ice sediment should be readily entrained in the headwaters and downstream sections of the analyzed Titanian basin, given sufficient flow depths of liquid hydrocarbons. Also, the importance of slope and the elevated topography of the …
An Application Of Armitage Trend Test To Genome-Wide Association Studies, Nigel A. Scott
An Application Of Armitage Trend Test To Genome-Wide Association Studies, Nigel A. Scott
Mathematics Theses
Genome-wide Association (GWA) studies have become a widely used method for analyzing genetic data. It is useful in detecting associations that may exist between particular alleles and diseases of interest. This thesis investigates the dataset provided from problem 1 of the Genetic Analysis Workshop 16 (GAW 16). The dataset consists of GWA data from the North American Rheumatoid Arthritis Consortium (NARAC). The thesis attempts to determine a set of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) that are associated significantly with rheumatoid arthritis. Moreover, this thesis also attempts to address the question of whether the one-sided alternative hypothesis that the minor allele is …
Discovery And Extraction Of Protein Sequence Motif Information That Transcends Protein Family Boundaries, Bernard Chen
Discovery And Extraction Of Protein Sequence Motif Information That Transcends Protein Family Boundaries, Bernard Chen
Computer Science Dissertations
Protein sequence motifs are gathering more and more attention in the field of sequence analysis. The recurring patterns have the potential to determine the conformation, function and activities of the proteins. In our work, we obtained protein sequence motifs which are universally conserved across protein family boundaries. Therefore, unlike most popular motif discovering algorithms, our input dataset is extremely large. As a result, an efficient technique is essential. We use two granular computing models, Fuzzy Improved K-means (FIK) and Fuzzy Greedy K-means (FGK), in order to efficiently generate protein motif information. After that, we develop an efficient Super Granular SVM …
A Multi-Wavelength Investigation Of Seyfert 1.8 And 1.9 Galaxies, Margaret Trippe
A Multi-Wavelength Investigation Of Seyfert 1.8 And 1.9 Galaxies, Margaret Trippe
Physics and Astronomy Dissertations
We focus on determining the underlying physical cause of a Seyfert galaxy's appearance as type a 1.8 or 1.9. Are these "intermediate" Seyfert types typical Seyfert 1 nuclei reddened by central dusty tori or by nuclear dust lanes/spirals in the narrow-line region? Or, are they similar to NGC 2992, objects that have intrinsically weak continua and weak broad emission lines? Our study compares measurements of the reddenings of the narrow and broad-line regions with each other and with the X-ray column derived from XMM Newton 0.5-10 keV spectra to determine the presence and location of dust in the line of …
Sizing Up The Stars, Tabetha Suzanne Boyajian
Sizing Up The Stars, Tabetha Suzanne Boyajian
Physics and Astronomy Dissertations
For the main part of this dissertation, I have executed a survey of nearby, main sequence A, F, and G-type stars with the CHARA Array, successfully measuring the angular diameters of forty-four stars to better than 4% accuracy. The results of these observations also yield empirical determinations of stellar linear radii and effective temperatures for the stars observed. In addition, these CHARA-determined temperatures, radii, and luminosities are fit to Yonsei-Yale isochrones to constrain the masses and ages of the stars. These quantities are compared to the results found in Allende Prieto & Lambert (1999), Holmberg et al. (2007), and Takeda …

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
Oleate-containing layered double hydroxides of zinc aluminum (ZnAl) and magnesium aluminum (MgAl) were used to prepare nanocomposites of polyethylene, poly(ethylene-co-butyl acrylate) and poly(methyl methacrylate). The additives and/or their polymer composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, FTIR, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, mechanical testing, and cone calorimetry. The unusual packing of the monounsaturated oleate anions in the gallery of these LDHs facilitates the dispersion of these nanomaterials. The inorganic LDH protects the polymer from thermal oxidation, shown by enhancement of the thermal and fire properties of the corresponding polymer nanocomposites. There is a qualitative difference in the morphology of the …

A Task-Centered Visualization Design Environment And A Method For Measuring The Complexity Of Visualization Designs, Xiaoyuan Suo
Computer Science Dissertations
Recent years have seen a growing interest in the emerging area of computer security visualization which is about developing visualization methods to help solve computer security problems. In this thesis, we will first present a method for measuring the complexity of information visualization designs. The complexity is measured in terms of visual integration, number of separable dimensions for each visual unit, the complexity of interpreting the visual attributes, number of visual units, and the efficiency of visual search. This method is designed to better assist fellow developers to quickly evaluate multiple design choices, potentially enables computer to automatically measure the …

We introduce a novel cooling technique capable of approaching the quantum ground state of a kilogram-scale system-an interferometric gravitational wave detector. The detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) operate within a factor of 10 of the standard quantum limit (SQL), providing a displacement sensitivity of 10-18 m in a 100 Hz band centered on 150 Hz. With a new feedback strategy, we dynamically shift the resonant frequency of a 2.7 kg pendulum mode to lie within this optimal band, where its effective temperature falls as low as 1.4μK, and its occupation number reaches about 200 quanta. Epr, Endor And Dft Studies On X-Irradiated Single Crystals Of L-Lysine Monohydrochloride Monohydrate And L-Arginine Monohydrocloride Monohydrate, Yiying Zhou
Physics and Astronomy Dissertations
When proteins and DNA interact, arginine and lysine are the two amino acids most often in close contact with the DNA. In order to understand the radiation damage to DNA in vivo, which is always associated with protein, it is important to learn the radiation chemistry of arginine and lysine independently, and when complexed to DNA. This work studied X-irradiated single crystals of L-lysine monohydrochloride dihydrate (L-lysine·HCl·2H2O) and L-arginine monohydrochloride monohydrate (L-arginine·HCl·H2O) with EPR, ENDOR, EIE techniques and DFT calculations. In both crystal types irradiated at 66K, the carboxyl anion radical and the decarboxylation radical were detected. DFT calculations supported …

Energy Current Imaging Method For Time Reversal In Elastic Media, Brian E. Anderson, Michele Griffa, Robert A. Guyer, Paul A. Johnson, Carene Larmat, Pierre-Yves Le Bas, Timothy J. Ulrich
Faculty Publications
An energy current imaging method is presented for use in locating sources of wave energy during the back propagation stage of the time reversal process. During the back propagation phase of an ideal time reversal experiment, wave energy coalesces from all angles of incidence to recreate the source event; after the recreation, wave energy diverges in every direction. An energy current imaging method based on this convergence/divergence behavior has been developed. The energy current imaging method yields a smaller spatial distribution for source reconstruction than is possible with traditional energy imaging methods.

Multistability In Bursting Patterns In A Model Of A Multifunctional Central Pattern Generator., Matthew Bryan Brooks
Multistability In Bursting Patterns In A Model Of A Multifunctional Central Pattern Generator., Matthew Bryan Brooks
Mathematics Theses
A multifunctional central pattern generator (CPG) can produce bursting polyrhythms that determine locomotive activity in an animal: for example, swimming and crawling in a leech. Each rhythm corresponds to a specific attractor of the CPG. We employ a Hodgkin-Huxley type model of a bursting leech heart interneuron, and connect three such neurons by fast inhibitory synapses to form a ring. This network motif exhibits multistable co-existing bursting rhythms. The problem of determining rhythmic outcomes is reduced to an analysis of fixed points of Poincare mappings and their attractor basins, in a phase plane defined by the interneurons' phase differences along …
Reliability Of The Model For Clustering Of Longitudinal Datasets Of Infant Mortality Rate In India, Ajay Kumar Bansal, S D. Sharma
Reliability Of The Model For Clustering Of Longitudinal Datasets Of Infant Mortality Rate In India, Ajay Kumar Bansal, S D. Sharma
COBRA Preprint Series
Because of the natural tendency of human beings and heavenly bodies to form groups, the technique of cluster analysis or segmentation analysis find its importance and applications in many fields of study. A model for clustering of time trends was proposed by authors whose beauty is that 2-way dimensions that is the horizontal flow of the trend and vertical distance of the trend from a common base are considered to obtain the natural clusters. In the present paper, the reliability of this model is studied in two steps namely (i) by repeating the analysis but using different interval distance measures …

Asymptotic Dynamics Of Attractive-Repulsive Swarms, Andrew J. Leverentz '08, Chad M. Topaz, Andrew J. Bernoff
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
We classify and predict the asymptotic dynamics of a class of swarming models. The model consists of a conservation equation in one dimension describing the movement of a population density field. The velocity is found by convolving the density with a kernel describing attractive-repulsive social interactions. The kernel’s first moment and its limiting behavior at the origin determine whether the population asymptotically spreads, contracts, or reaches steady state. For the spreading case, the dynamics approach those of the porous medium equation. The widening, compactly supported population has edges that behave like traveling waves whose speed, density, and slope we calculate. …

Modeling The Problem Of Assigning Virginia’S Localities To Dcr’S Regional Offices, Sudharshana Srinivasan
Theses and Dissertations
Virginia’s Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) assigns all of Virginia localities to Regional Offices to help conserve the natural resources in a certain region. In this paper, we present a mathematical model for optimizing such assignments by minimizing the travel time and cost of these assignments. With the growing increase in fuel costs and tighter budgets, our solution finds alternate assignments that will help cut costs by 14% annually. We have used integer programming techniques to find optimal assignments which satisfy requirements, respect limitations and minimize cost. Several plans are suggested, some keeping soil and water conservation districts together …
Peeling Adhesive Tape Emits Electromagnetic Radiation At Terahertz Frequencies, J. Horvat, R. A. Lewis
Peeling Adhesive Tape Emits Electromagnetic Radiation At Terahertz Frequencies, J. Horvat, R. A. Lewis
Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)
An unusual concept for a simple and inexpensive terahertz source is presented: unpeeling adhesive tape. The observed spectrum of this terahertz radiation exhibits a peak at 2 THz and a broader peak at 18 THz. The radiation is not polarized. The mechanism of terahertz radiation is tribocharging of the adhesive tape and subsequent discharge, possibly bremsstrahlung with absorption or energy density focusing during the dielectric breakdown of a gas. The accompanying optical emission is also a consequence of tribocharging.
Mineral Chemistry And Origin Of The Olivine-Rich Zone Of The Palisades Sill, Kevin Xavier Chau
Mineral Chemistry And Origin Of The Olivine-Rich Zone Of The Palisades Sill, Kevin Xavier Chau
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Palisades Sill contains an olivine-rich zone that has attracted scientific attention for over one hundred years. Despite the amount of focus, a definitive explanation for the origin of this layer has not been reached. Through the use of detailed petrographic analyses and electron microscopy, the aim of this study was to collect data on mineral phases from the Palisades Sill in order to better understand the history. Extremely broad ranges in mineral compositions indicate that the olivine-rich zone evolved through in situ equilibrium crystallization, implying that it was injected once the main body of the sill had already been …

Solar Energy Conversion In Plants And Bacteria Studied Using Ftir Difference Spectroscopy And Quantum Chemical Computational Methodologies, Sreeja Parameswaran
Physics and Astronomy Dissertations
This dissertation presents a study of the molecular mechanism underlying the highly efficient solar energy conversion processes that occur in the Photosystem I (PS I) reaction centers in plants and bacteria. The primary electron donor P700 is at the heart of solar energy conversion process in PS I and the aim is to obtain a better understanding of the electronic and structural organization of P700 in the ground and excited states. Static Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) difference spectroscopy (DS) in combination with site directed mutagenesis and Density Functional Theory (DFT) based vibrational frequency simulations were used to investigate how protein …

Detection And Quantification Of Organophosphate Pesticides In Human Serum, Peter Kuklenyik
Chemistry Dissertations
The United States Environmental Agency permits the use of 39 organophosphate pesticides. Many of these pesticides are acutely toxic and have lasting effect on human health. Organophosphates quickly metabolize in the body, therefore currently human exposure is studied by measuring the metabolic products in urine. In this work a suite of analytical methods was developed to determine the presence of un-metabolized organophosphate pesticides in human serum. First mass spectroscopic detection methods were evaluated. Gas chromatograph coupled tandem mass spectrometer was used to compare the detection limits using chemical and electron impact ionization. Positive chemical ionization was selected, because it provided …

In 2001, S. Müller and A. Zunger [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 165502 (2001)] predicted a never-before-observed crystal structure in Ag-Pd. Recently, Curtarolo predicted the same structure to be stable in Pt-Cd and Pt-Pd [S. Curtarolo et. Al., CALPHAD: Comput. Coupling Phase Diagrams Thermochem. 29, 163 (2005)]. The predicted structure is unique in several ways. though never seen in any other face-centered-cubic-based intermetallic binary compound or ordered alloy, it is relatively simple—it contains only four atoms per unit cell. Furthermore, the structure is the only one of this small size, except the L12 structure, that cannot be characterized as a simple …

An Investigation Into The Development Of A Practical Gis Mapping Tool Supporting Emissions Inventory Information, Elizabeth J. Davis-Noland
An Investigation Into The Development Of A Practical Gis Mapping Tool Supporting Emissions Inventory Information, Elizabeth J. Davis-Noland
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations call for States to submit for EPA review and approval State Implementation Plans (SIPs) which establish goals and emission reduction strategies for improving air quality in national parks and wilderness areas. State and tribe air quality analysts therefore need the ability to display and analyze emissions inventory data in relation to geographic locations. However, due to budget and other constraints, traditional Graphical Information Systems (GIS) tools are often not available. Today, traditional GIS are being challenged in various domains by a variety of free or low-cost internet accessible services. Leveraging the availability of the Google …

De Vries Behavior Of The Electroclinic Effect In The Smectic-A* Phase Near A Biaxiality-Induced Smectic-A*–Smectic-C* Tricritical Point, Karl Saunders
Physics
Using a generalized Landau theory involving orientational, layering, tilt, and biaxial order parameters we analyze the smectic-A* and smectic-C* (Sm-A*-Sm-C*) transitions, showing that a combination of small orientational order and large layering order leads to Sm-A*-Sm-C* transitions that are either continuous and close to tricriticality or first order. The model predicts that in such systems the increase in birefringence upon entry to the Sm-C* phase will be especially rapid. It also predicts that the change in layer spacing at the Sm-A*-Sm-C* transition will be proportional to the orientational order. These are two hallmarks of Sm-A*-Sm-C* transitions in de Vries materials. …

Two Problems On Bipartite Graphs, Albert Bush
Two Problems On Bipartite Graphs, Albert Bush
Mathematics Theses
Erdos proved the well-known result that every graph has a spanning, bipartite subgraph such that every vertex has degree at least half of its original degree. Bollobas and Scott conjectured that one can get a slightly weaker result if we require the subgraph to be not only spanning and bipartite, but also balanced. We prove this conjecture for graphs of maximum degree 3.
The majority of the paper however, will focus on graph tiling. Graph tiling (or sometimes referred to as graph packing) is where, given a graph H, we find a spanning subgraph of some larger graph G that …
