High-Energy Amplitudes In Gauge Theories In The Next-To-Leading-Order, Giovanni Antonio Chirilli Jul 2009

High-Energy Amplitudes In Gauge Theories In The Next-To-Leading-Order, Giovanni Antonio Chirilli

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Scattering processes play a central role in physics, and high-energies experiments give us an insight into the fine structure of matter. The high-energy behavior of amplitudes in gauge theories can be reformulated in terms of the evolution of Wilson-line operators. In the leading order this evolution is governed by the non-linear Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation. In order to see if this equation is relevant for existing or future deep inelastic scattering (DIS) accelerators (like Electron Ion Collider (EIC) or Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC)) one needs to know how large are the next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections. In addition, the NLO corrections …

Compensation Of Loss And Stimulated Emission Of Surface Plasmon Polaritons, Guohua Zhu Jul 2009

Compensation Of Loss And Stimulated Emission Of Surface Plasmon Polaritons, Guohua Zhu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have become in recent years an important research topic because of their interesting, physics and exciting potential applications, ranging from sensing and biomedicine to nanoscopic imaging and information technology. However, many applications of surface plasmon polaritons are hindered by one common cause—absorption loss in metal.

Over the years, numerous proposals have been made on how to conquer the plasmon loss. In this dissertation, (1) the known solutions to the loss problem by adding optical gain have been reviewed; (2) the properties of surface plasmon polaritons are studied theoretically, and the solution of the controversy regarding the …

Publications

SAO 206462 (HD 135344B) has previously been identified as a Herbig F star with a circumstellar disk with a dip in its infrared excess near 10 mum. In combination with a low accretion rate estimated from Br gamma, it may represent a gapped, but otherwise primordial or "pre-transitional" disk. We test this hypothesis with Hubble Space Telescope coronagraphic imagery, FUV spectroscopy and imagery and archival X-ray data, and spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling constrained by the observed system inclination, disk outer radius, and outer disk radial surface brightness (SB) profile using the Whitney Monte Carlo Radiative Transfer Code. The essentially …

The Potential Use Of Slow-Down Technology To Improve Pronounciation Of English For International Communication, Bunny Richardson Jul 2009

The Potential Use Of Slow-Down Technology To Improve Pronounciation Of English For International Communication, Bunny Richardson

Doctoral

The focus of this research is on oral communication between L1 (first language) and L2 (second language) English users - to determine whether an algorithm which slows down speech can increase the intelligibility of speech between interlocutors for EIC (English for International Communication). The slow-down facility is a CALL tool which slows down speech without tonal distortion. It allows English language learners more processing time to hear individual phonemes as produced in the stream of connected speech, to help them hear and produce phonemes more accurately and thus more intelligibly. The study involved five tests, all concerned with the intelligibility …

Harmonic Functions On R-Covered Foliations And Group Actions On The Circle, Sergio Fenley, Renato Feres, Kamlesh Parwani Jul 2009

Harmonic Functions On R-Covered Foliations And Group Actions On The Circle, Sergio Fenley, Renato Feres, Kamlesh Parwani

Kamlesh Parwani

Let (M,F) be a compact codimension-one foliated manifold whose leaves are equipped with Riemannian metrics, and consider continuous functions on M that are harmonic along the leaves of F. If every such function is constant on leaves we say that (M,F) has the Liouville property. Our main result is that codimension-one foliated bundles over compact negatively curved manifolds satisfy the Liouville property. Related results for R-covered foliations, as well as for discrete group actions and discrete harmonic functions, are also established.

Efficient Non-Interactive Range Proof, Tsz Hon Yuen, Qiong Huang, Yi Mu, Willy Susilo, Duncan S. Wong, Guomin Yang Jul 2009

Efficient Non-Interactive Range Proof, Tsz Hon Yuen, Qiong Huang, Yi Mu, Willy Susilo, Duncan S. Wong, Guomin Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose the first constant size non-interactive range proof which is not based on the heuristic Fiat-Shamir transformation and whose security does not rely on the random oracle assumption. The proof consists of a constant number of group elements. Compared with the most efficient constant-size range proof available in the literature, our scheme has significantly reduced the proof size. We showed that our scheme achieves perfect completeness, perfect soundness and composable zero-knowledge under a conventional number-theoretic assumption, namely the Subgroup Decision Problem.

Active Learning For Causal Bayesian Network Structure With Non-Symmetrical Entropy, Li G., Tze-Yun Leong Jul 2009

Active Learning For Causal Bayesian Network Structure With Non-Symmetrical Entropy, Li G., Tze-Yun Leong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Causal knowledge is crucial for facilitating comprehension, diagnosis, prediction, and control in automated reasoning. Active learning in causal Bayesian networks involves interventions by manipulating specific variables, and observing the patterns of change over other variables to derive causal knowledge. In this paper, we propose a new active learning approach that supports interventions with node selection. Our method admits a node selection criterion based on non-symmetrical entropy from the current data and a stop criterion based on structure entropy of the resulting networks. We examine the technical challenges and practical issues involved. Experimental results on a set of benchmark Bayesian networks …

The Wisdom Of The Few: A Collaborative Filtering Approach Based On Expert Opinions From The Web, Xavier Amatriain, Neal Lathia, Josep M. Pujol, Haewoon Kwak, Nuria. Oliver Jul 2009

The Wisdom Of The Few: A Collaborative Filtering Approach Based On Expert Opinions From The Web, Xavier Amatriain, Neal Lathia, Josep M. Pujol, Haewoon Kwak, Nuria. Oliver

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Nearest-neighbor collaborative filtering provides a successful means of generating recommendations for web users. However, this approach suffers from several shortcomings, including data sparsity and noise, the cold-start problem, and scalability. In this work, we present a novel method for recommending items to users based on expert opinions. Our method is a variation of traditional collaborative filtering: rather than applying a nearest neighbor algorithm to the user-rating data, predictions are computed using a set of expert neighbors from an independent dataset, whose opinions are weighted according to their similarity to the user. This method promises to address some of the weaknesses …

A Bayesian Approach Integrating Regional And Global Features For Image Semantic Learning, Luong-Dong Nguyen, Ghim-Eng Yap, Ying Liu, Ah-Hwee Tan, Liang-Tien Chia, Joo-Hwee Lim Jul 2009

A Bayesian Approach Integrating Regional And Global Features For Image Semantic Learning, Luong-Dong Nguyen, Ghim-Eng Yap, Ying Liu, Ah-Hwee Tan, Liang-Tien Chia, Joo-Hwee Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In content-based image retrieval, the “semantic gap” between visual image features and user semantics makes it hard to predict abstract image categories from low-level features. We present a hybrid system that integrates global features (Gfeatures) and region features (R-features) for predicting image semantics. As an intermediary between image features and categories, we introduce the notion of mid-level concepts, which enables us to predict an image’s category in three steps. First, a G-prediction system uses G-features to predict the probability of each category for an image. Simultaneously, a R-prediction system analyzes R-features to identify the probabilities of mid-level concepts in that …

Exploring Inter-Concept Relationship With Context Space For Semantic Video Indexing, Xiao-Yong Wei, Yu-Gang Jiang, Chong-Wah Ngo Jul 2009

Exploring Inter-Concept Relationship With Context Space For Semantic Video Indexing, Xiao-Yong Wei, Yu-Gang Jiang, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Semantic concept detectors are often individually and independently developed. Using peripherally related concepts for leveraging the power of joint detection, which is referred to as context-based concept fusion (CBCF), has been one of the focus studies in recent years. This paper proposes the construction of a context space and the exploration of the space for CBCF. Context space considers the global consistency of concept relationship, addresses the problem of missing annotation, and is extensible for cross-domain contextual fusion. The space is linear and can be built by modeling the inter-concept relationship through annotation provided by either manual labeling or machine …

Towards Expressive Specification And Efficient Model Checking, Jin Song Dong, Jun Sun Jul 2009

Towards Expressive Specification And Efficient Model Checking, Jin Song Dong, Jun Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

System modeling is important and highly non-trivial. The choice of specification language is an important factor in the success of the entire development. The language should cover several facets of the requirements and the model should precisely capture (up to abstraction of irrelevant details) an existing system or a system to be built. The language should have a semantic model suitable to study the behaviors of the system and to establish the validity of desired properties. A formal model can be the basis for a variety of system development activities, e.g., system simulation, visualization, verification or prototype synthesis.

Integrating Specification And Programs For System Modeling And Verification, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Chunqing Chen Jul 2009

Integrating Specification And Programs For System Modeling And Verification, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Chunqing Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

High level specification languages like CSP use mathematical objects as abstractions to represent systems and processes. System behaviors are described as process expressions combined with compositional operators, which are associated with elegant algebraic laws for system analysis. Nonetheless, modeling systems with non-trivial data and functional aspects using CSP remains difficult. In this work, we propose a modeling language named CSP# (short for communicating sequential programs) which integrates high-level modeling operators with low-level procedural codes, for the purpose of efficient mechanical system verification. We demonstrate that data operations can be modeled as terminating sequential programs, which can be composed using high-level …

Learning And Inferencing In User Ontology For Personalized Semantic Web Search, Xing Jiang, Ah-Hwee Tan Jul 2009

Learning And Inferencing In User Ontology For Personalized Semantic Web Search, Xing Jiang, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

User modeling is aimed at capturing the users’ interests in a working domain, which forms the basis of providing personalized information services. In this paper, we present an ontology based user model, called user ontology, for providing personalized information service in the Semantic Web. Different from the existing approaches that only use concepts and taxonomic relations for user modeling, the proposed user ontology model utilizes concepts, taxonomic relations, and non-taxonomic relations in a given domain ontology to capture the users’ interests. As a customized view of the domain ontology, a user ontology provides a richer and more precise representation of …

Spatial Cloaking Revisited: Distinguishing Information Leakage From Anonymity, Kar Way Tan, Yimin Lin, Kyriakos Mouratidis Jul 2009

Spatial Cloaking Revisited: Distinguishing Information Leakage From Anonymity, Kar Way Tan, Yimin Lin, Kyriakos Mouratidis

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Location-based services (LBS) are receiving increasing popularity as they provide convenience to mobile users with on-demand information. The use of these services, however, poses privacy issues as the user locations and queries are exposed to untrusted LBSs. Spatial cloaking techniques provide privacy in the form of k-anonymity; i.e., they guarantee that the (location of the) querying user u is indistinguishable from at least k-1 others, where k is a parameter specified by u at query time. To achieve this, they form a group of k users, including u, and forward their minimum bounding rectangle (termed anonymzing spatial region, ASR) to …

Heterologous Expression And Purification Of Vibrio Proteolyticus (Aeromonas Proteolytica) Aminopeptidase: A Rapid Protocol, Mariam Hartley, Brian Bennett Jul 2009

Heterologous Expression And Purification Of Vibrio Proteolyticus (Aeromonas Proteolytica) Aminopeptidase: A Rapid Protocol, Mariam Hartley, Brian Bennett

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

Metalloaminopeptidases (mAPs) are enzymes that are involved in HIV infectivity, tumor growth and metastasis, angiogenesis, and bacterial infection. Investigation of structure–function relationships in mAPs is a prerequisite to rational design of anti-mAP chemotherapeutics. The most intensively studied member of the biomedically important dinuclear mAPs is the prototypical secreted Vibrio proteolyticus di-zinc aminopeptidase (VpAP). The wild-type enzyme is readily purified from the supernatant of cultures of V. proteolyticus, but recombinant variants require expression in Escherichia coli. A greatly improved system for the purification of recombinant VpAP is described. A VpAP-(His)6 polypeptide, containing an N-terminal propeptide, and a C-terminal …

Consistency Management Strategies For Data Replication In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Takahiro Hara, Sanjay Kumar Madria Jul 2009

Consistency Management Strategies For Data Replication In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Takahiro Hara, Sanjay Kumar Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In a mobile ad hoc network, data replication drastically improves data availability. However, since mobile hosts' mobility causes frequent network partitioning, consistency management of data operations on replicas becomes a crucial issue. In such an environment, the global consistency of data operations on replicas is not desirable by many applications. Thus, new consistency maintenance based on local conditions such as location and time need to be investigated. This paper attempts to classify different consistency levels according to requirements from applications and provides protocols to realize them. We report simulation results to investigate the characteristics of these consistency protocols in a …

Two Applications Of Art To Geometry, Viktor Blåsjö Jul 2009

Two Applications Of Art To Geometry, Viktor Blåsjö

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Geometry and art exploit the same source of human pleasure: the exercise of our spatial intuition. It is not surprising, then, that interconnections between them abound. Applications of geometry to art, of which we shall indicate a few, go back at least to Alberti’s De Pictura (1435). But although geometry started out, as it so often does, as a most courteous suitor in its relationship with art, it was soon to be affectionately rewarded. We shall study two of these rewards.

Mathematical Curiosities About Division Of Integers, Jérôme Proulx, Mary Beisiegel Jul 2009

Mathematical Curiosities About Division Of Integers, Jérôme Proulx, Mary Beisiegel

The Mathematics Enthusiast

As mathematics educators, our focus of attention is mainly placed on the learning and teaching of mathematics. But, as we study phenomena of mathematical learning and teaching, we often come across intriguing mathematical phenomena that capture our interest. We find ourselves often bouncing mathematical ideas back and forth, not just looking for (new/better) ways of teaching or presenting a mathematical concept, but also of uncovering and discovering potential understandings of the concept. These mathematical issues we encounter represent for us a significant aspect of our work, and are also very stimulating. One of these issues arose for us as we …

Graph Isomorphisms And Matrix Similarity: Switching Between Representations, Thierry Dana-Picard Jul 2009

Graph Isomorphisms And Matrix Similarity: Switching Between Representations, Thierry Dana-Picard

The Mathematics Enthusiast

A proof whether two graphs (possibly oriented graphs or multigraphs, etc.) are isomorphic or not can be derived by various methods. Some of them are reasonable for small numbers of vertices and/or edges, but not for larger numbers. Switching from iconic representation to a matrix representation transforms the problem of Graph Theory into a problem in Linear Algebra. The support provided by a Computer Algebra System is analyzed, in particular with regard to the building of new mathematical knowledge through a transition from graphical to algebraic representation. Moreover two important issues are discussed: a. the need for more than one …
