Using Oceanic-Atmospheric Oscillations For Long Lead Time Streamflow Forecasting, Ajay Kalra, Sajjad Ahmad Mar 2009

Using Oceanic-Atmospheric Oscillations For Long Lead Time Streamflow Forecasting, Ajay Kalra, Sajjad Ahmad

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

We present a data-driven model, Support Vector Machine (SVM), for long lead time streamflow forecasting using oceanic-atmospheric oscillations. The SVM is based on statistical learning theory that uses a hypothesis space of linear functions based on Kernel approach and has been used to predict a quantity forward in time on the basis of training from past data. The strength of SVM lies in minimizing the empirical classification error and maximizing the geometric margin by solving inverse problem. The SVM model is applied to three gages, i.e., Cisco, Green River, and Lees Ferry in the Upper Colorado River Basin in the …

An Evaluation Of Solar Air Heating At United States Air Force Installations, David S. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to evaluate the use of solar air heating at U.S. Air Force installations. Specifically, this thesis analyzed Unglazed Transpired Collector (UTC) technology, more commonly known as SolarWalls®. This thesis sought to determine if UTC systems are an economically and environmentally viable technology which Air Force energy managers should include in their portfolio of alternative energy options. This research question was answered through the use of case studies and life-cycle cost analysis. Case studies were performed at various U.S. military installations which have already utilized UTC systems to provide a consolidated source of lessons learned. …

A Taxonomy For And Analysis Of Anonymous Communications Networks, Douglas J. Kelly Mar 2009

A Taxonomy For And Analysis Of Anonymous Communications Networks, Douglas J. Kelly

Theses and Dissertations

Any entity operating in cyberspace is susceptible to debilitating attacks. With cyber attacks intended to gather intelligence and disrupt communications rapidly replacing the threat of conventional and nuclear attacks, a new age of warfare is at hand. In 2003, the United States acknowledged that the speed and anonymity of cyber attacks makes distinguishing among the actions of terrorists, criminals, and nation states difficult. Even President Obama’s Cybersecurity Chief-elect recognizes the challenge of increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks. Now through April 2009, the White House is reviewing federal cyber initiatives to protect US citizen privacy rights. Indeed, the rising quantity and ubiquity …

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Antarctic Geological Drilling (ANDRILL) program—a collaboration between Germany, Italy, New Zealand, and the United States that is one of the larger programs endorsed by the International Polar Year (IPY; http:// www .ipy .org)—successfully completed the drilling phase of the Southern McMurdo Sound (SMS) Project in December 2007. This second drill core of the program’s campaign in the western Ross Sea, Antarctica, complements the results of the first drilling season [Naish et al., 2007] by penetrating deeper into the stratigraphic section in the Victoria Land Basin and extending the recovered time interval back to approximately 20 million years ago.

Range Estimation Algorithm Comparison In 3-D Flash Ladar Data, Steven P. Jordan

Theses and Dissertations

Range estimation algorithms have been applied to Laser Detection and Ranging (LADAR) data to test for accuracy and precision. Data was acquired from Matlab® simulations and an experiment using the Advanced Scientific Concepts 3-D flash LADAR camera. Simulated LADAR data was based on a Gaussian pulse shape model with Poisson noise added. Simulations were performed to test range estimation algorithm performance with respect to waveform position within the range gate. The effectiveness of each algorithm is presented in terms of its average root mean square error and standard deviation in 1000 trials. The measured data experiment examined the effectiveness of …

Blind Deconvolution Through Polarization Diversity Of Long Exposure Imagery, Steven P. James Mar 2009

Blind Deconvolution Through Polarization Diversity Of Long Exposure Imagery, Steven P. James

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the algorithm developed in this thesis was to create a post processing method that could resolve objects at low signal levels using polarization diversity and no knowledge of the atmospheric seeing conditions. The process uses a two-channel system, one unpolarized image and one linearly polarized image, in a GEM algorithm to reconstruct the object. Previous work done by Strong showed that a two-channel system using polarization diversity on short exposure imagery could produce images up to twice the diffraction limit. In this research, long exposure images were simulated and a simple Kolmogorov model used. This allowed for …

Modeling Of Aircraft Deicing Fluid Induced Biochemical Oxygen Demand In Subsurface-Flow Constructed Treatment Wetlands, William J. Mclaughlin Mar 2009

Modeling Of Aircraft Deicing Fluid Induced Biochemical Oxygen Demand In Subsurface-Flow Constructed Treatment Wetlands, William J. Mclaughlin

Theses and Dissertations

Aircraft deicing is vital to safe operation in cold weather environments. Unfortunately, release of glycol-based aircraft deicing fluids (ADF) to waterways adjacent to airfields poses a significant environmental threat. The deicing fluids used at DoD airfields impart a high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) when they enter waterways. The currently accepted conventional treatment is collection and transport of ADF-laden storm water to a publicly owned treatment works. The volume and BOD concentrations in the storm water often make this type of treatment impractical. Subsurface flow constructed treatment wetlands have been demonstrated to be effective in attenuating ADF-induced BOD. The models currently …

Effects Of Varying Sufactant Chain Lenghts On The Magnetic, Optical And Hyperthermia Properties Of Ferrofluids, Corneliu Rablau, Prem Vaishnava, Rajesh Regmi, Chandran Sudakar, Correy Black, Gavin Lawes, Ratna Naik, Melissa Lavoie, David Kahn

Physics Presentations And Conference Materials

We report studies of the structural, magnetic, magneto-thermal and magneto-optic properties of dextran, oleic acid, lauric acid and myristic acid surfacted Fe3O4 nanoparticles of hydrodynamic sizes ranging from 32 nm to 92 nm. All the samples showed saturation magnetization of ̃50 emu/g, significantly smaller than the bulk value for Fe3O4, together with superparamagnetic behavior. The ac magnetization measurements on the dextran coated nanoparticles showed frequency dependent blocking temperature, consistent with superparamgnetic blocking. The ferrofluid heating rates in a 250 Gauss, 100 kHz ac magnetic field varied with the chain lengths of the surfactants, with higher heating rates for longer chains. …

Harmonic Mappings Of An Annulus, Nitsche Conjecture And Its Generalizations, Tadeusz Iwaniec, Leonid V. Kovalev, Jani Onninen Mar 2009

Harmonic Mappings Of An Annulus, Nitsche Conjecture And Its Generalizations, Tadeusz Iwaniec, Leonid V. Kovalev, Jani Onninen

Mathematics - All Scholarship

As long ago as 1962 Nitsche conjectured that a harmonic homeomorphism h: A(r,R) onto-> A(r*, R*) between planar annuli exists if and only if R*/r* > 1/2 ((R/r) + (r/R)). We prove this conjecture when the domain annulus is not too wide; explicitly, when log(R/r) < 3/2. For general A(r,R) the conjecture is proved under additional assumption that either h or its normal derivative have vanishing average on the inner boundary circle. This is the case for the critical Nitsche mapping which yields equality in the above inequality. The Nitsche mapping represents so-called free evolution of circles of the annulus A(r,R). It will be shown on the other hand that forced harmonic evolution results in greater ratio R*/r*. To this end, we introduce the underlying differential operators for the circular means of the forced evolution and use them to obtain sharp lower bounds of R*/r*.

Mitigating Insider Sabotage And Espionage: A Review Of The United States Air Force's Current Posture, Erika C. Leach Mar 2009

Mitigating Insider Sabotage And Espionage: A Review Of The United States Air Force's Current Posture, Erika C. Leach

Theses and Dissertations

The security threat from malicious insiders affects all organizations. Mitigating this problem is quite difficult due to the fact that (1) there is no definitive profile for malicious insiders, (2) organizations have placed trust in these individuals, and (3) insiders have a vast knowledge of their organization’s personnel, security policies, and information systems. The purpose of this research is to analyze to what extent the United States Air Force (USAF) security policies address the insider threat problem. The policies are reviewed in terms of how well they align with best practices published by the Carnegie Mellon University Computer Emergency Readiness …

The Fast Recovery Dynamics Of A Quantum Dot Semiconductor Optical Amplifier, T. Piwonski, Guillaume Huyet, Et. Al. Mar 2009

The Fast Recovery Dynamics Of A Quantum Dot Semiconductor Optical Amplifier, T. Piwonski, Guillaume Huyet, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

We consider a rate equation model of a quantum dot semiconductor optical amplifier that takes into account carrier capture, escape, and Pauli blocking processes. We evaluate possible differences between phonon-assisted or Auger processes being dominant for recovery. An analytical solution which corresponds to phonon-assisted interaction is then used to accurately fit experimental recovery curves and allows an estimation of both the carrier capture and escape rates.

Operations-Focused Optimized Theater Weather Sensing Strategies Using Preemptive Binary Integer Programming, Andrew J. Geyer Mar 2009

Operations-Focused Optimized Theater Weather Sensing Strategies Using Preemptive Binary Integer Programming, Andrew J. Geyer

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes a method that optimally deploys weather sensors of all types in a battlefield environment. Gridded climatology models are used to determine an estimate for the weighted frequency of occurrence of operationally significant inclement weather events. That data is used to formulate a series of preemptive Binary Integer Linear Programs that maximize detection of expected operationally significant inclement weather occurrences within the constraints of feasibility of sensor deployment, sensor operational lifespan and the sensor’s ability to detect the operationally significant inclement weather elements. The preemptive Binary Integer Linear Programs are combined into a single objective function that maintains …

Detecting Near-Earth Objects Using Cross-Correlation With A Point Spread Function, Anthony P. O'Dell Mar 2009

Detecting Near-Earth Objects Using Cross-Correlation With A Point Spread Function, Anthony P. O'Dell

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes a process to help discover Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) of larger than 140 meters in diameter from ground based telescopes. The process involves using Nyquist sampling rate to take data from a ground-based telescope and measuring the atmospheric seeing parameter, r0, at the time of data collection. r0 is then used to create a point spread function (PSF) for a NEO at the visual magnitude limit of the telescope and exposure time. This PSF is cross-correlated with the Nyquist sampling rate image from the telescope to reduce the noise and therefore increase the detection probability of …

Analytic Formulas For Above-Threshold Ionization Or Detachment Plateau Spectra, M. V. Frolov, N. L. Manakov, Anthony F. Starace Mar 2009

Analytic Formulas For Above-Threshold Ionization Or Detachment Plateau Spectra, M. V. Frolov, N. L. Manakov, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Closed-form analytic formulas are derived in the tunneling limit for both above-threshold detachment (ATD) of negative ions and above-threshold ionization (ATI) of neutral atoms. These formulas are shown to give precise agreement with essentially exact single-active-electron numerical results for detached or ionized electron energies corresponding to the high-energy end of the ATD and ATI plateaus (with only a small constant shift of electron energies being required in the case of ATI). These formulas for ATI and ATD rates thus provide an analytic explanation for the well-known oscillatory patterns of ATI and ATD rates as functions of electron energy and of …

The answers to fundamental science questions in astrophysics, ranging from the history of the expansion of the universe to the sizes of nearby stars, hinge on our ability to make precise measurements of diverse astronomical objects. As our knowledge of the underlying physics of objects improves along with advances in detectors and instrumentation, the limits on our capability to extract science from measurements is set, not by our lack of understanding of the nature of these objects, but rather by the most mundane of all issues: the precision with which we can calibrate observations in physical units. We stress the …

Resonant Microwave Cavity For 8.5-12 Ghz Optically Detected Electron Spin Resonance With Simultaneous Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, John S. Colton, L. R. Wienkes Mar 2009

Resonant Microwave Cavity For 8.5-12 Ghz Optically Detected Electron Spin Resonance With Simultaneous Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, John S. Colton, L. R. Wienkes

Faculty Publications

We present a newly developed microwave resonant cavity for use in optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) experiments. The cylindrical quasi-TE 011 mode cavity is designed to fit in a 1 in. magnet bore to allow the sample to be optically accessed and to have an adjustable resonant frequency between 8.5 and 12 GHz. The cavity uses cylinders of high dielectric material, so-called "dielectric resonators," in a double-stacked configuration to determine the resonant frequency. Wires in a pseudo-Helmholtz configuration are incorporated into the cavity to provide frequencies for simultaneous nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The system was tested by measuring cavity absorption …

Tobacco Mosaic Virus Templated Synthesis Of One Dimensional Inorganic–Polymer Hybrid Fibres, Jianhua Rong, Fiona Oberbeck, Xinnan Wang, Xiaodong Li, Jerry Oxsher, Zhongwei Niu, Qian Wang

Faculty Publications

Inorganic–polymer hybrid nanofibres were prepared by using a rod-like tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) as a template. With tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as a precursor, long silica-coated TMVfibres were formed via a head-to-tail assembly, which showed a substantial increase of the elastic modulus. Furthermore, homogenous titania–TMV hybrid fibres could be prepared using polyaniline-coated TMV fibres as a template, which were used to form a composite film that was able to sense liquefied petroleum gases.

The oxidation of H-cluster in gas phase, and in aqueous enzyme phase, has been investigated by means of quantum mechanics (QM) and combined quantum mechanics–molecular mechanics (QM/MM). Several potential reaction pathways (in the above-mentioned chemical environments) have been studied, wherein only the aqueous enzyme phase has been found to lead to an inhibited hydroxylated cluster. Specifically, the inhibitory process occurs at the distal iron (Fed) of the catalytic H-cluster (which isalso the atom involved in H2 synthesis). The processes involved in the H-cluster oxidative pathways are O2 binding, e− transfer, protonation, and H2O removal. We found that oxygen binding is …

Analysis On Typhoon Longwang Intensity Changes Over The Ocean Via Satellite Data, Chung-Chih Liu, Tian-Yow Shyu, Chun-Chieh Chao, Yu-Feng Lin

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

The changes in the typhoon intensity are a very important process. In this study, we used satellite data to analyze the cloud structure of Typhoon Longwang. Results show that the changes in the high level cirrus pattern seemed to have a connection to the typhoon intensity. During the time period from 0600UTC to 1200UTC 30 September 2005, the high level cirrus clouds of Typhoon Longwang radiated from the inner core region. The cloud area that Typhoon Longwang covered grew larger, and the pattern changed from a asymmetric to symmetric distribution during 0000UTC to 1200UTC 30 September 2005. The best track …

Electrostatic Deposition Of Polycations And Polyanions Onto Cysteine Monolayers, Mark Anderson Mar 2009

Electrostatic Deposition Of Polycations And Polyanions Onto Cysteine Monolayers, Mark Anderson

Mark R. Anderson

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and the quartz crystal microbalance are used to monitor the deposition of polyelectrolytes onto an interface modified with a monolayerofcysteine. When using an anionic redox probe, Fe(CN)−46, the impedance of the cysteine modified electrode is a function of the solution pH; the charge-transfer resistance being higher at basic pH, and smaller under acidic conditions relative to the value found when the solution is buffered near the pI for cysteine. This behavior is consistent with the electrostatic interaction between the anionic redox probe and the net charge of the interface. After exposure of the cysteine-modified interface to 0.10 …

Cmbpol Mission Concept Study: Probing Inflation With Cmb Polarization, Scott Watson, Daniel Baumann, Mark G. Jackson, Peter Adshead

Physics - All Scholarship

We summarize the utility of precise cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization measurements as probes of the physics of inflation. We focus on the prospects for using CMB measurements to differentiate various inflationary mechanisms. In particular, a detection of primordial B-mode polarization would demonstrate that inflation occurred at a very high energy scale, and that the inflaton traversed a super-Planckian distance in field space. We explain how such a detection or constraint would illuminate aspects of physics at the Planck scale. Moreover, CMB measurements can constrain the scale-dependence and non-Gaussianity of the primordial fluctuations and limit the possibility of a significant …

Quantum Nature Of Two-Dimensional Electron Gas Confinement At Laalo3=Srtio3 Interfaces, Karolina Janicka, Julian P. Velev, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

We perform density functional calculations to understand the mechanism controlling the confinement width of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces. We find that the 2DEG confinement can be explained by the formation of metal induced gap states (MIGS) in the band gap of SrTiO3. These states are formed as the result of quantum-mechanical tunneling of the charge created at the interface due to electronic reconstruction. The attenuation length of the MIGS into the insulator is controlled by the lowest-decay-rate evanescent states of SrTiO3, as determined by its complex band structure. Our …

Evaluation Of An Innovative Technology For Treatment Of Water Contaminated With Perchlorate And Organic Compunds, Maureen A. Downen Mar 2009

Evaluation Of An Innovative Technology For Treatment Of Water Contaminated With Perchlorate And Organic Compunds, Maureen A. Downen

Theses and Dissertations

Drinking water sources contaminated with both perchlorate and organic compounds have frequently been found in the U.S. Tailored granular activated carbon (T-GAC) is an innovative technology that is being evaluated to determine if it can more cost effectively remove perchlorate than conventional technologies. A question that has been raised is whether T-GAC can economically treat perchlorate-contaminated water that also has organic co-contaminants present. During a field study, trichloroethylene, an organic compound, and perchlorate were successfully removed by adsorption using a T-GAC/GAC system. These results motivated development of a model that could be applied to predict the cost and performance of …
