Excited states in 256Rf were populated via the 208Pb(50Ti,2n) fusion–evaporation reaction. Delayed γ-ray and electron decay spectroscopy was performed and three isomeric states in 256Rf have been identified. A fourth low-energy nonyrast state was identified from the γ-ray decay of one of the higher lying isomers. The states are interpreted as multi-quasiparticle excitations.

New Precision Orbits Of Bright Double-Lined Spectroscopic Binaries. Iii. Hd 82191, Ω Draconis, And 108 Herculis, Francis C. Fekel, Jocelyn Tomkin, Michael H. Williamson

We have determined improved spectroscopic orbits for three double-lined binaries, HD 82191 (Am), ω Dra (F5 V), and 108 Her (Am), using radial velocities from the 2.1 m telescope at McDonald Observatory, the coudé feed telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory, and 2 m telescope at Fairborn Observatory. The orbital periods range from 5.28 to 9.01 days, and all three systems have circular orbits. The new orbital dimensions (a1 sin i and a2 sin i) and minimum masses (m1 sin3 i and m2 sin3 i) have accuracies of 0.2% or better. Our improved results confirm the large minimum masses of …

Evidence For The Decay BS0 → DS(*)DS(*) And A Measurement Of ΔγSCp/ΓS, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, D0 Collaboration

We search for the semi-inclusive process Bs0Ds(*)Ds(*) using 2.8 fb-1 of pp collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV recorded by the D0 detector operating at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider.We observe 26.6 ± 8.4 signal events with a significance above background of 3.2 standard deviations yielding a branching ratio of B(bs0Ds(*)Ds(*) = 0.035 ± 0.010(stat.) ± 0.011 (syst.). Under certain theoretical assumptions, these double-charm final states saturate CP-even eigenstates in the Bs0 decays resulting in a width …

Anomalous Wtb couplings modify the angular correlations of the top-quark decay products and change the single top-quark production cross section. We present limits on anomalous top-quark couplings by combining information from W boson helicity measurements in top-quark decays and anomalous coupling searches in the single top-quark final state. We set limits on right-handed vector couplings as well as left-handed and right-handed tensor couplings based on about 1 fb-1 of data collected by the D0 experiment.

Measurement Of The Lifetime Of The BC± Meson In The Semileptonic Decay Channel, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, D0 Collaboration

Using approximately 1.3 fb-1 of data collected by the D0 detector between 2002 and 2006, we measure the lifetime of the Bc± meson in the Bc±J/ψμ± + X final state. A simultaneous unbinned likelihood fit to the J/ψ + μ invariant mass and lifetime distributions yields a signal of 881 ± 80(stat) candidates and a lifetime measurement of τ(Bc±) = 0.448-0.036+0.038(stat) ± 0.032(syst) ps.

An automatic target classification system contains a classifier which reads a feature as an input and outputs a class label. Typically, the feature is a vector of real numbers. Other features can be non-numeric, such as a string of symbols or alphabets. One method of improving the performance of an automatic classification system is through combining two or more independent classifiers that are complementary in nature. Complementary classifiers are observed by finding an optimal method for partitioning the problem space. For example, the individual classifiers may operate to identify specific objects. Total mercury (Hg) concentration provides insufficient information to understand Hg behavior in Hg-contaminated soil systems and to seek potential remediation technologies, because the distribution, mobility, bioavailability, and toxicity of Hg are dependent on Hg forms present in soils. The phase association of Hg in soil is investigated to evaluate potential environmental risk through combination of total Hg determination, soil fractionation, and speciation analysis of Hg in a Hg-contaminated DOE site. Besides total Hg concentration analysis, sequential extraction procedures and thermal desorption techniques were employed to study Hg binding forms in soils in this study. In the centrosymmetric title complex, [Ni(C7H3FNO3S)2(H2O)4], the NiII atom exhibits a slightly distorted trans-NiN2O4 octahedral coordination. The nitrogen donors are provided by two 5-fluorosaccharinate ligands and the oxygen donors are provided by four water molecules. The crystal structure features O-HO and bifurcated O-H(F,O) hydrogen bonds, the latter involving the F atom of the 5-fluorosaccharinate ligand.

Dr. Scott Gaudi earned his B.S. from Michigan State University, and his M.S. and Ph.D. from the Ohio State University. He was a Hubble Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study, and a Menzel Fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, before joining the faculty in the Department of Astronomy at the Ohio State University in 2006. The four-state random walk (4RW) model, wherein the particle is endowed with two states of spin and two states of directional motion in each space coordinate, permits a stochastic solution of the Schrödinger equation (or the equivalent parabolic equation) without resorting to the usual analytical continuation in complex space of the particle trajectories. Analytical expressions are derived here for the various transitional probabilities in a 4RW by employing generating functions and eigenfunction expansions when the particle moves on a 1+1 space-time lattice with two-point boundary conditions. Identification of cyber attacks and network services is a robust field of study in the machine learning community. Less effort has been focused on understanding the domain space of real network data in identifying important features for cyber attack and network service classification. Motivations for such work allow for anomaly detection systems with less requirements on data “sniffed” off the network, extraction of features from the traffic, reduced learning time of algorithms, and ideally increased classification performance of anomalous behavior. This research effort seeks to characterize a vision-aided approach for an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) to autonomously determine relative position to another aircraft in a formation, specifically to address the autonomous aerial refueling problem. A system consisting of a monocular digital camera coupled with inertial sensors onboard the UAS is analyzed for feasibility of using this vision-aided approach. A three-dimensional rendering of the tanker aircraft is used to generate predicted images of the tanker as seen by the receiver aircraft. Cirrus clouds are composed of ice particles and their formation pathways have been studied extensively in the laboratory. The ability of ammonium sulfate particles to act as nuclei for cirrus clouds has been of particular importance because of their ubiquitous presence in the upper troposphere. The results of past laboratory experiments of homogeneous ice nucleation from ammonium sulfate particles show a wide range of freezing conditions. In the present study, a flow tube apparatus equipped with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to reexamine these discrepancies. Ice core records from Greenland have shown times of rapid warming during the most recent glacial period, called Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) events. D-O events are important to our understanding of both past climate systems and modern climate volatility. In this paper, we present new approaches for statistically evaluating the existence of cyclicity in D-O events and the possible lagged correlation between the Greenland and Antarctica temperature records. Specifically, we consider permutation testing and bootstrapping methodologies for assessing the cyclicity of D-O events and the correlation between the Greenland and Antarctica records. This paper explores the use of the meta-heuristic search algorithm Simulated Annealing for solving a minimum cost network synthesis problem. This problem is a common one in the design of telecommunication networks. The formulation we use models a number of practical problems with hop-limit, degree and capacity constraints. Emphasis is placed on a new approach that uses a knapsack polytope to select amongst a number of pre-computed traffic routes in order to synthesise the network. The advantage of this approach is that a subset of the best routes can be used instead of the whole set, thereby making the process …
