NowCOAST is a GIS-based Web mapping portal developed by the National Ocean Service’s (NOS) Coast Survey Development Laboratory that provides users with situational awareness of current and future environmental conditions for U.S. coastal areas. nowCOAST accomplishes this by integrating selected near-real-time data, satellite imagery, warnings, and forecasts of meteorological, oceanographic, and river conditions from NOAA’s Weather, Ocean, and Satellite Services, NOAA’s Research, other federal agencies, and regional ocean observing systems. nowCOAST makes the observations, imagery, warnings, and forecasts available to users via on-map display and geo-referenced hyperlinks. Coastal users can display nowCOAST products via its Web map viewer (http://nowcoast.noaa.gov) or …

Modeling Effects Of Human Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms On Protein-Protein Interactions, Shaolei Teng, Thomas Madej, Anna Panchenko, Emil Alexov Mar 2009

Modeling Effects Of Human Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms On Protein-Protein Interactions, Shaolei Teng, Thomas Madej, Anna Panchenko, Emil Alexov

Publications

A large set of three-dimensional structures of 264 protein-protein complexes with known nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (nsSNPs) at the interface was built using homology-based methods. The nsSNPs were mapped on the proteins' structures and their effect on the binding energy was investigated with CHARMM force field and continuum electrostatic calculations. Two sets of nsSNPs were studied: disease annotated Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) and nonannotated (non-OMIM). It was demonstrated that OMIM nsSNPs tend to destabilize the electrostatic component of the binding energy, in contrast with the effect of non-OMIM nsSNPs. In addition, it was shown that the change of …

Substrate Binding Preferences And PKA Determinations Of A Nitrile Hydratase Model Complex: Variable Solvent Coordination To [(Bmmp-Tasn)Fe]Otf, Martin G. O'Toole, Brian Bennett, Mark S. Mashuta, Craig A. Grapperhaus

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

The five-coordinate iron-dithiolate complex (N,N′-4,7-bis-(2′-methyl-2′-mercatopropyl)-1-thia-4,7-diazacyclononane)iron(III), [LFe]+, has been isolated as the triflate salt from reaction of the previously reported LFeCl with thallium triflate. Spectroscopic characterization confirms an S = 1/2 ground state in non-coordinating solvents with room temperature μeff = 1.78 μΒ and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) derived g-values of g1 = 2.04, g2 = 2.02 and g3 = 2.01. [LFe]+ binds a variety of coordinating solvents resulting in six-coordinate complexes [LFe-solvent]+. In acetonitrile the low-spin [LFe-NCMe]+ (g1 = 2.27, g2 = …

Synthetic Studies Directed Toward Guianolides: An Organoiron Route To The 5,7,5 Tricyclic Ring System, Jayapal Reddy Gone, Nathaniel J Wallock, Sergey Lindeman, William Donaldson

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A diastereoselective route to the 5,7,5-tricyclic core of the guianolides is presented. This route relies on Cope rearrangement of a divinylcyclopropane prepared by alkenyl Grignard addition to a (pentadienyl)iron(+1) cation, followed by oxidative decomplexation. An additional key reaction involves oxidative rearrangement of a 3,4-epoxy-1,7-diol to generate a γ-lactone. The relative stereochemistry of this product was established by X-ray crystallography.

Fisheries Research Report No. 190 - Esd Reporting And Assessment Subprogram: Strategic Planning, Project Management And Adoption - Stage 2, R Fletcher

Fisheries research reports

Final FRDC Report – Project Number 2004/006

The second stage of the operation of the ESD Subprogram was successful, but compared to the focus during the first subprogram period, mostly in a consolidation manner rather than from the generation of significant new tools. This was necessary because it takes time to adopt and integrate significant changes to the methods of operation of agencies and industries. The policies must be there before any real activity can occur and we found that for the broader focused, cross fishery/cross sector applications of the framework, agencies were not in a position for much of …

Magnetic Ordering In The Spinel Compound Li[Mn₂₋ₓlix]O₄(X=0, 0.04), John Gaddy, Jagat Lamsal, Marcus Petrovic, Wouter Montfrooij, Alexander Schmets, Thomas Vojta Mar 2009

Magnetic Ordering In The Spinel Compound Li[Mn₂₋ₓlix]O₄(X=0, 0.04), John Gaddy, Jagat Lamsal, Marcus Petrovic, Wouter Montfrooij, Alexander Schmets, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The two B-site ions Mn3+ and Mn4+ in the stoichiometric spinel structure LiMn2O4 form a complex, columnar ordered pattern below the charge-ordering transition at room temperature. On further cooling to below 66 K, the system develops long-range antiferromagnetic order. In contrast, whereas lithium-substituted Li[Mn2−xLix]O4 also undergoes a charge-ordering transition around room temperature, it only displays frozen in short-range magnetic order below ~25-30 K. We investigate to what extent the columnar charge-order pattern observed in LiMn2O4 can account for the measured magnetic ordering patterns in both the pure and Li-substituted (x=0.04) compounds. We conclude that eightfold rings of Mn4+ ions form …

The Dust Cloud Around The White Dwarf G 29-38. Ii. Spectrum From 5 To 40 Μm And Mid-Infrared Photometric Variability, William T. Reach, Ted Von Hippel, Et Al. Mar 2009

The Dust Cloud Around The White Dwarf G 29-38. Ii. Spectrum From 5 To 40 Μm And Mid-Infrared Photometric Variability, William T. Reach, Ted Von Hippel, Et Al.

Publications

We model the mineralogy and distribution of dust around the white dwarf G29-39 using the infrared spectrum from 1 to 35 μm. The spectral model for G29-38 dust combines a wide range of materials based on spectral studies of comets and debris disks. In order of their contribution to the mid-infrared emission, the most abundant minerals around G29-38 are amorphous carbon (λ < 8 μm), amorphous and crystalline silicates (5-40 μm), water ice (10-15 and 23-35 μm), and metal sulfides (18-28 μm). The amorphous C can be equivalently replaced by other materials (like metallic Fe) with featureless infrared spectra. The best-fitting crystalline silicate is Fe-rich pyroxene. In order to absorb enough starlight to power the observed emission, the disk must either be much thinner than the stellar radius (so that it can be heated from above and below) or it must have an opening angle wider than 2°. A "moderately optically thick" torus model fits well if the dust extends inward to 50 times the white dwarf radius, all grains hotter than 1100 K are vaporized, the optical depth from the star through the disk is τ∥ = 5, and the radial density profile ∝r –2.7; the total mass of this model disk is 2 × 1019 g. A physically thin (less than the white dwarf radius) and optically thick disk can contribute to the near-infrared continuum only; such a disk cannot …

Differentiating Unparticles From Extra Dimensions Via Mini Black Hole Thermodynamics, Jonas R. Mureika Mar 2009

Differentiating Unparticles From Extra Dimensions Via Mini Black Hole Thermodynamics, Jonas R. Mureika

Physics Faculty Works

A thermodynamics-based method is presented for differentiating mini black hole creation mechanisms in high energy parton collisions, including scenarios with large compactified extra dimensions and unparticle-enhanced gravity with real scaling dimension dU. Tensor unparticle interactions are shown to mimic the physics of (2dU−2) noninteger extra spatial dimensions. This yields unique model-dependent production rates, Hawking temperature profiles, and decay multiplicities for black holes of mass MBH∼1–15  TeV that may be created at the LHC and other future colliders.

From Gene Mutation To Protein Characterization, David A. Moffet Mar 2009

From Gene Mutation To Protein Characterization, David A. Moffet

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Works

A seven-week “gene to protein” laboratory sequence is described for an undergraduate biochemistry laboratory course. Student pairs were given the task of introducing a point mutation of their choosing into the well studied protein, enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP). After conducting literature searches, each student group chose the mutation they wanted to introduce into EGFP. Students designed their sequence-specific mutagenic primers and constructed their desired mutation. The resulting EGFP mutant proteins were expressed in E. coli, purified and characterized. This laboratory sequence connected the major concepts of molecular biology and biochemistry, while incorporating the thrill of novel discovery in …

The production of excited charm, D 1(2420)0 and D 2* (2460)0, and charm-strange, D s1(2536)±, mesons in ep collisions was measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 126 pb -1. Masses, widths and helicity parameters were determined. The measured yields were converted to the rates of c quarks hadronising as a given excited charm meson and to the ratios of the dominant D 2* (2460)0 and D s1(2536) ± branching fractions. A search for the radially excited charm meson, D *(2640)±, was also performed. The results are compared with those measured previously and with theoretical …

Climate Change Impacts In Virginia: Status Of Natural Resource Data Records As Tools To Assess Continuing Trends, Tamia Rudnicky, Marcia Berman, Roger L. Mann, Carl Hershner Mar 2009

Climate Change Impacts In Virginia: Status Of Natural Resource Data Records As Tools To Assess Continuing Trends, Tamia Rudnicky, Marcia Berman, Roger L. Mann, Carl Hershner

Reports

As scientists we pose the hypothesis that climate change over the past decades has left a signal in natural resource status and productivity in Virginia. This signal exists subsumed in a variety of data from crop and forestry production, to fishery landings, to spatial distribution of numerous plant and animal species of interest. Description of these signals in concert with known changes in climate descriptors (temperature, rainfall and more) provide a basis for hind-casting possible cause and effect relationships. If such relationships exist, and we hypothesize that they do, then projections of climate descriptors (temperature, rainfall and more) provide the …

A Social Relation Aware Routing Protocol For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Jisun An, Yangwoo Ko, Dongman Lee Mar 2009

A Social Relation Aware Routing Protocol For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Jisun An, Yangwoo Ko, Dongman Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose a social relation aware routing protocol for mobile ad hoc networks, which is designed for content sharing mobile social applications. Since a content can be shared by a group of users who have similar interests, the similarity of users' interests is a good metric to predict who will consume which contents. Shared interests can be exploited in routing and replication of content request and reply to achieve enhanced efficacy in content sharing. Since routing determines which content will be forwarded by whom, a route selected based on similarity of interest increases the utilization of contents …

Continuous Visible Nearest Neighbour Queries, Yunjun Gao, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Gencai Chen Mar 2009

Continuous Visible Nearest Neighbour Queries, Yunjun Gao, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Gencai Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we identify and solve a new type of spatial queries, called continuous visible nearest neighbor (CVNN) search. Given a data set P, an obstacle set O, and a query line segment q, a CVNN query returns a set of (p, R) tuples such that p ? P is the nearest neighbor (NN) to every point r along the interval R ? q as well as p is visible to r. Note that p may be NULL, meaning that all points in P are invisible to all points in R, due to the obstruction of some obstacles in …

Optics And Remote Sensing Of Bahamian Carbonate Sediment Whitings And Potential Relationship To Wind-Driven Langmuir Circulation, H. M. Dierssen, Richard C. Zimmerman, David J. Burdige Mar 2009

Optics And Remote Sensing Of Bahamian Carbonate Sediment Whitings And Potential Relationship To Wind-Driven Langmuir Circulation, H. M. Dierssen, Richard C. Zimmerman, David J. Burdige

OES Faculty Publications

Regions of milky white seas or "whitings" periodically occur to the west of Andros Island along the Great Bahama Bank where the bottom sediment consists of fine-grained aragonite mud. We present measurements of inherent optical properties within a sediment whiting patch and discuss the potential for monitoring the frequency, extent, and quantity of suspended matter from ocean colour satellite imagery. Sea spectral reflectance measured in situ and remotely from space revealed highly reflective waters elevated across the visible spectrum (i.e., "whitened") with a peak at 490 nm. Particulate backscattering was an order of magnitude higher than that measured at other …

Neutrosophic Logic, Wave Mechanics, And Other Stories: Selected Works 2005-2008, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

There is beginning for anything; we used to hear that phrase. The same wisdom word applies to us too. What began in 2005 as a short email on some ideas related to interpretation of the Wave Mechanics results in a number of papers and books up to now. Some of these papers can be found in Progress in Physics or elsewhere. It is often recognized that when a mathematician meets a physics-inclined mind then the result is either a series of endless debates or publication. In our story, we prefer to publish rather than perish. Therefore, our purpose with this …

Holocene Fire And Climate In Rangeland Ecosystems Of Southwestern Idaho, Nathan Alfred Nelson Mar 2009

Holocene Fire And Climate In Rangeland Ecosystems Of Southwestern Idaho, Nathan Alfred Nelson

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Because rangelands are characterized by more arid climates than forested regions, traditional methods of reconstructing fire histories (e.g. fire-scars from trees or charcoal preserved in lake sediments) are limited. Charcoal preserved in alluvial fans and stream terraces provide a means of reconstructing a record of fires and geomorphic responses in rangeland ecosystems.

This study used dated charcoal from fire-related deposits and deposit characteristics to determine a record of fire and geomorphic response. Twenty-five samples collected from terraces and alluvial fans within the Wood Creek study area indicate three major periods of fire-related activity. From 4,400 – 4,000 cal yr BP, …

The Contribution Of Halo White Dwarf Binaries To The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna Signal, Ashley J. Ruiter, Krzysztof Belczynski, Matthew Benacquista, Kelly Holley-Bockelmann Mar 2009

The Contribution Of Halo White Dwarf Binaries To The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna Signal, Ashley J. Ruiter, Krzysztof Belczynski, Matthew Benacquista, Kelly Holley-Bockelmann

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Galactic double white dwarfs were postulated as a source of confusion limited noise for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), the future space-based gravitational wave observatory. Until very recently, the Galactic population consisted of a relatively well-studied disk population, a somewhat studied smaller bulge population and a mostly unknown, but potentially large halo population. It has been argued that the halo population may produce a signal that is much stronger (factor of ∼5 in spectral amplitude) than the disk population. However, this surprising result was not based on an actual calculation of a halo white dwarf population, but was derived …

Putting A Slug To Work, Konstantin Läufer, George K. Thiruvathukal, Ryohei Nishimura, Carlos Ramirez Martinez-Eiroa

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this article, the authors explore various uses of inexpensive embedded Linux devices such as the Linksys NSLU2 ("slug"). Embedded computing is a topic of growing interest. Although novel architectures such as cell processors, graphics processors (GPUs), and FPGAs are growing in popularity, conventional microproessor designs such as Intel's Xscale (ARM) and Atom pack a punch in a small footprint, not to mention being widely supported by commodity operating system and development tools. We're convinced that this entire space is a tool worth keeping in the scientific programmer's and software developer's toolchests.
