Understanding the long-term patterns of great earthquake rupture along a subduction zone provides a framework for assessing modern seismic hazard. However, evidence that can be used to infer the size and location of past earthquakes is typically erased by erosion after a few thousand years. Meter-scale cracks that cut the surface of coastal areas in northern Chile and southern Peru preserve a record of earthquakes spanning several hundred thousand years owing to the hyperarid climate of the region. Nanometrology device standards and methods for fabricating and using such devices in conjunction With scanning probe microscopes are described. The fabrication methods comprise: (1) epitaxial growth that produces nanometer sized islands of knoWn morphology, structural, morphological and chemical stability in typical nanometrology environments, and large height-to-width nano-island aspect ratios, and (2) marking suitable crystallographic directions on the device for alignment With a scanning direction.

Two strategies are proposed for sorting out priorities and goals in education. At the college level the column argues that goals, and therefore requirements, should be set based on the desired knowledge base of the entire population rather than the individual. At the scale of a single K-12 classroom the column argues that priority be given to content requiring most instructor intervention, describing how the structure of class time and school activities would change as a result. Quantitative Literacy On The Web Of Science, 2 – Mining The Health Numeracy Literature For Assessment Items, H L. Vacher, Todd Chavez

A topic search of the Web of Science (WoS) database using the term “numeracy” produced a bibliography of 293 articles, reviews and editorial commentaries (Oct 2008). The citation graph of the bibliography clearly identifies five benchmark papers (1995-2001), four of which developed numeracy assessment instruments. Starting with the 80 papers that cite these benchmarks, we identified a set of 25 papers (1995-2008) in which the medical research community reports the development and/or application of health-numeracy assessments. In all we found 10 assessment instruments from which we have compiled a total of 48 assessment items. There are both general and context-specific …

We present the case for introductory geoscience courses as model venues for increasing the quantitative literacy (QL) of large numbers of the college-educated population. The geosciences provide meaningful context for a number of fundamental mathematical concepts that are revisited several times in a single course. Using some best practices from the mathematics education community surrounding problem solving, calculus reform, pre-college mathematics and five geoscience/math workshops, geoscience and mathematics faculty have identified five pedagogical ideas to increase the QL of the students who populate introductory geoscience courses. In November 2005, the faculty of Macalester College voted to institute a graduation requirement in Quantitative Thinking (QT) that is truly interdisciplinary. It currently draws on courses from thirteen departments including Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Theater, Mathematics, Environmental Science, and Geology. Debar: A Scalable High-Performance De-Duplication Storage System For Backup And Archiving, Tianming Yang, Hong Jiang, Dan Feng, Zhongying Niu

We present DEBAR, a scalable and high-performance de-duplication storage system for backup and archiving, to overcome the throughput and scalability limitations of the state-of-the-art data de-duplication schemes, including the Data Domain De-duplication File System (DDFS). DEBAR uses a two-phase de-duplication scheme (TPDS) that exploits memory cache and disk index properties to judiciously turn the notoriously random and small disk I/Os of fingerprint lookups and updates into large sequential disk I/Os, hence achieving a very high de-duplication throughput. This award supports the development of an embedded ice sheet model, one where a section of the ice sheet (at a mesoscale) is modeled at higher resolution, but is driven by output from a lower-resolution model of the entire ice sheet (at a global scale). In addition to giving higher resolution results, it will be better able to capture the behavior of small-scale, but dynamically important, systems such as ice streams. This paper introduces a new architecture for the development of a design environment where the domain experts can build a knowledge base for target-specific ES for rural business operators. The purpose of this paper is to provide an introduction to the concepts of wavelets and multiwavelets, and explain how these tools can be used by the analyst community to find patterns in quantitative data. Three multiwavelet bases are introduced, the GHM basis from \cite{GHM}, a piecewise polynomial basis with approximation order 4 from \cite{DGH}, and a smoother approximation-order-4 basis developed by the author in previous work \cite{K}. The technique of using multiwavelets to find patterns is illustrated in a traffic-analysis example. A search for periodic gravitational waves, from sources such as isolated rapidly spinning neutron stars, was carried out using 510 h of data from the fourth LIGO science run (S4). The search was for quasimonochromatic waves in the frequency range from 50 to 1500 Hz, with a linear frequency drift ḟ (measured at the solar system barycenter) in the range -f/τ<ḟ<0. 1f/τ, where the minimum spin-down age τ was 1000 yr for signals below 300 Hz and 10000 yr above 300 Hz. The main computational work of the search was distributed over approximately 100000 computers volunteered by the general public. This large computing power allowed the use of a relatively long coherent integration time of 30 h, despite the large parameter space searched. No statistically significant signals were found. The sensitivity of the search is estimated, along with the fraction of parameter space that was vetoed because of contamination by instrumental artifacts. In the 100 to 200 Hz band, more than 90% of sources with dimensionless gravitational-wave strain amplitude greater than 10-23 would have been detected. © 2009 The American Physical Society.

This talk will show that the fusion algebra of the vertex operator algebra VL+ (where L is a rank 1 even lattice) is isomorphic to the fusion algebra of the affine Kac-Moody Lie algebra of type D(1) at level 2.

There is growing concern about the effects of inter-annual climatic variability, such as the El-Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), on regional hydrology and water resources. We analyzed patterns of wintertime precipitation intensity, using both simple intensity and number of heavy precipitation days per year, for eight stations in northwestern Oregon’s Willamette Valley for the period 1972–2006, and examined the separate and combined influence of ENSO and PDO on precipitation intensity. The analysis was accomplished using Kendall’s tau and analysis of variance (ANOVA) to determine differences in precipitation intensity among combinations of positive and negative ENSO …

We report on the experimental demonstration of an all-optical π cross-phase modulation jump. By performing a preselection, an optically induced unitary transformation, and then a postselection on the polarization degree of freedom, the phase of the output beam acquires either a zero or π phase shift (with no other possible values). The postselection results in optical loss in the output beam. An input state may be chosen near the resulting phase singularity, yielding a π phase shift even for weak interaction strengths. The scheme is experimentally demonstrated using a coherently prepared dark state in a warm atomic cesium vapor.

We report the first measurement of an angular correlation parameter in neutron #1; decay using polarized ultracold neutrons (UCN). We utilize UCN with energies below about 200 neV, which we guide and store for #1;30 s in a Cu decay volume. The interaction of the neutron magnetic dipole moment with a static 7 T field external to the decay volume provides a 420 neV potential energy barrier to the spin state parallel to the field, polarizing the UCN before they pass through an adiabatic fast passage spin flipper and enter a decay volume, situated within a 1 T field in …

[1] We present an analysis of the occurrence distributions of statistically significant apparent frequencies of periodic solar wind number density structures and dayside magnetospheric oscillations in the f = 0.5–5.0 mHz range. Using 11 years (1995–2005) of solar wind data, we identified all spectral peaks that passed both an amplitude test and a harmonic F test at the 95% confidence level in 6-hour data segments. We find that certain discrete frequencies, specifically f = 0.7, 1.4, 2.0, and 4.8 mHz, occur more often than do other frequencies over those 11 years. Helical supramolecular architecture, such as helical foldamers, supramolecular helicates and aggregates, helical molecules, macromolecules, and oligomers, is a fascinating topic of interest in chemistry and materials science. Applications of FMO/PCM geometry optimization to polyalanine show that the structures obtained with the FMO/PCM method are very close to those obtained with the corresponding full ab initio PCM methods. FMO/PCM (RHF/6-31G* level) is used to optimize the solution structure of the 304-atom Trp-cage miniprotein and the result is in agreement with NMR experiments. The key factors determining the relative stability of the a-helix, b-turn and the extended form in solution are elucidated for polyalanine.

UDP-glucose dehydrogenase (UGDH) oxidizes UDP-glucose to UDP-glucuronate, an essential precursor for production of hyaluronan (HA), proteoglycans, and xenobiotic glucuronides. High levels of HA turnover in prostate cancer are correlated with aggressive progression. UGDH expression is high in the normal prostate even though HA accumulation is virtually undetectable. Thus, its normal role in the prostate may be to provide precursors for glucuronosyltransferase enzymes, which inactivate and solubilize androgens by glucuronidation. In this report, we quantified androgen dependence of UGDH, glucuronosyltransferase, and HA synthase expression. The stereospecific intramolecular alkylation of a hydroperoxyacetal provides the basis for the first asymmetric synthesis of the dioxane propionate core of the peroxyplakorates. Chemoselective hydrometallation of an alkyne in the presence of a peroxide is used to introduce a synthon for the polyunsaturated side chains of the peroxyplakorates. The route suggests a general solution for the 1,2-dioxane unit in many peroxide natural products.
