Introduction To The "Prisoners And Guards" Game, Eugen J. Ionascu, Tim Howard Jan 2009

Introduction To The "Prisoners And Guards" Game, Eugen J. Ionascu, Tim Howard

Faculty Bibliography

We study the half-dependent problem for the king graph Kn. We give proofs to establish the values h(Kn) for n ∈ {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6} and an upper bound for h(Kn) in general. These proofs are independent of computer assisted results. Also, we introduce a two-player game whose winning strategy is tightly related with the values h(Kn). This strategy is analyzed here for n = 3 and some facts are given for the case n = 4. Although the rules of the game are very simple, the winning strategy is highly complex even for n = 4.

Teaching In Ill-Defined Domains Using Its And Ai Appraoches, Rania Hodhod Jan 2009

Teaching In Ill-Defined Domains Using Its And Ai Appraoches, Rania Hodhod

Faculty Bibliography

Ill-defined domains offer many challenges to computer scientists. Developing intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) in these domains is a very challenging task due to the difficulty in modeling these domains, answers to ill-defined problems are ambiguously identified as right or wrong, and no generally accepted architecture is currently existed. This paper presents general guidelines for the development of ITSs in ill-defined domains, such as Argumentation and Ethics. This is instantiated in the two example systems AEINS and ALES. These systems offer adaptive learning processes and personalized feedback aiming to transfer the required skills to the learners and develop their reasoning.

Heterogeneous Conductorlike Solvation Model, Hui Li, Dejun Si Jan 2009

Heterogeneous Conductorlike Solvation Model, Hui Li, Dejun Si

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

A heterogeneous conductorlike solvation model (conductorlike screening model/conductorlike polarizable continuum model) that uses different local effective dielectrics for different portions of the solute cavity surface is implemented for quantum chemical Hartree–Fock and Kohn–Sham methods. A variational treatment is used to form the heterogeneous solvation operator, so a simple analytic expression of the energy gradients, which are vital for geometry optimization and molecular dynamics simulation, is derived and implemented. Using the new Fixed Points with Variable Areas surface tessellation scheme, continuous and smooth potential energy surfaces as well as analytic gradients are obtained for this heterogeneous model.

Background: Oxygen-free radicals formed during normal aerobic cellular metabolism attack bases in DNA and 7,8-dihydro-8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG) is one of the major lesions formed. It is amongst the most mutagenic lesions in cells because of its dual coding potential, wherein 8-oxoG(syn) can pair with an A in addition to normal base pairing of 8-oxoG(anti) with a C. Human DNA polymerase κ (Polκ) is a member of the newly discovered Y-family of DNA polymerases that possess the ability to replicate through DNA lesions. To understand the basis of Polκ's preference for insertion of an A opposite 8-oxoG lesion, …

Galois Structure And De Rhan Invariants Of Elliptic Curves, Darren B. Glass, Sonin Kwon Jan 2009

Galois Structure And De Rhan Invariants Of Elliptic Curves, Darren B. Glass, Sonin Kwon

Math Faculty Publications

Let K be a number field with ring of integers OK. Suppose a finite group G acts numerically tamely on a regular scheme X over OK. One can then define a de Rham invariant class in the class group Cl(OK[G]), which is a refined Euler characteristic of the de Rham complex of X. Our results concern the classification of numerically tame actions and the de Rham invariant classes. We first describe how all Galois etale G-covers of a K-variety may be built up from finite Galois extensions of K and from geometric covers. When X is a curve of positive …

Reliability Confidence Intervals For Oil Spills In The Gulf Of Mexico, William V. Harper, Thomas R. James, Ted G. Eschenbach Jan 2009

Reliability Confidence Intervals For Oil Spills In The Gulf Of Mexico, William V. Harper, Thomas R. James, Ted G. Eschenbach

Mathematics Faculty Scholarship

An extensive study [Eschenbach and Harper (2006)] of offshore oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico with extensions to the northern seas of Alaska involved the estimation of the likelihood of oil spill volumes in the Gulf of Mexico for both pipeline and platform spills. This paper develops both maximum likelihood based reliability and percentile confidence intervals for the 3- parameter Weibull distribution. The statistical aspects are discussed along with applications of developed Excel VBA functions. The Excel routines are available free on the web at http://faculty.otterbein.edu/WHarper/. The functions are illustrated with Gulf of Mexico oil spill data.

Microbiology Publications and Other Works

While multiple phylogenetic markers have been used in the culture independent study of microcystin producing cyanobacteria, in only a few instances have multiple markers been studied within individual cells, and in all cases these studies have been conducted with cultured isolates. Here, we isolate and evaluate large DNA fragments (> 6 kb) encompassing two genes involved in microcystin biosynthesis (mcyA2 and mcyB1) and use them to identify the source of gene fragments found in water samples. Further investigation of these gene loci from individual cyanobacterial cells allowed for improved analysis of the genetic diversity within microcystin producers as …

The CLAW hypothesis argues that a negative feedback mechanism involving phytoplankton-derived dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) could mitigate increasing sea surface temperatures that result from global warming. DMSP is converted to the climatically active dimethylsulfide (DMS), which is transferred to the atmosphere and photochemically oxidized to sulfate aerosols, leading to increases in planetary albedo and cooling of the Earth’s atmosphere. A shipboard incubation experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of increased temperature and pCO2 on the algal community structure of the North Atlantic spring bloom and their subsequent impact on particulate and dissolved DMSP concentrations (DMSPp and DMSPd). Under …

Recycling Tendencies Of Fordham University's Population, Jeremy Aiss, Vincent Ammirato, Anamarie Beluch, Christopher Torres Jan 2009

Recycling Tendencies Of Fordham University's Population, Jeremy Aiss, Vincent Ammirato, Anamarie Beluch, Christopher Torres

Student Theses 2001-2013

Our experiment aimed to find whether there was a correlation between the distance necessary to travel in order to recycle and the actual frequency of recycling. As a result, we hypothesized that recycling rate would be dependent upon the convenience to the recycler and consequently that the farther the distance between the garbage and recycling receptacle, the lower the likeliness of recycling. Between two buildings, the Walsh Library and the McGinley Center, we found that the total amount of recycling varied only slightly between these two buildings with Walsh having a 71.6% rate of recycling of all items, while McGinley …

Environmental Health And Climate Change: The Case Of Lyme Disease, Matthew Abad Jan 2009

Environmental Health And Climate Change: The Case Of Lyme Disease, Matthew Abad

Student Theses 2001-2013

During the last couple of decades, global warming has been a topic of great investigation. The temperature of the Earth has been slowly raising and an increase in just a few degrees can have tragic consequences to this planet. One of the reasons for global warming is due to the effect of solar variation. The surface of the sun develops hot spots where more heat is generated and therefore results in an increase in the Earth’s temperature. The major reason for global warming is due to human activities. The human population greatly depends on coal for a source of fuel …

Using The Morse Potential To Understand Reaction Coördinates Using Maple, Carl W. David Jan 2009

Using The Morse Potential To Understand Reaction Coördinates Using Maple, Carl W. David

Chemistry Education Materials

The interactions employed in the “linear” reaction A(g)+BC(g) -> AB(g) + C(g) in a “one dimensional world” can be used to illustrate the “reaction coördinate”, using Maple, in a manner which allows students to inspect potential energy surfaces, make contour maps of those surfaces, and conceptually construct the “reaction coördinate” by tracing the local minimum path on the surface created.“one dimensional world” can be used to illustrate the “reaction coördinate”, using Maple, in a manner which allows students to inspect potential energy surfaces, make contour maps of those surfaces, and conceptually construct the “reaction coördinate” by tracing the local minimum …

The Hartree-Fock Method Applied To Helium's Electrons, Carl W. David Jan 2009

The Hartree-Fock Method Applied To Helium's Electrons, Carl W. David

Chemistry Education Materials

The difficulties of applying the Hartree-Fock method to many body problems is illustrated by treating Helium's electrons up to the point where tractability vanishes. Second, the problem of applying Hartree-Fock methods to the helium atom's electrons, when they are constrained to remain on a sphere, is revisited. The 6-dimensional total energy operator is reduced to a 2-dimensional one, and the application of that 2-dimensional operator in the Hartree-Fock mode is discussed.
