Space-Time-Frequency Code Implementation In Mb-Ofdm Uwb Communications: Design Criteria And Performance, Alfred Mertins, Le Chung Tran
Space-Time-Frequency Code Implementation In Mb-Ofdm Uwb Communications: Design Criteria And Performance, Alfred Mertins, Le Chung Tran
Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)
This paper proposes a general framework of Space-Time-Frequency Codes (STFCs) for Multi-Band Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MB-OFDM) Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) communications systems. A great similarity between the STFC MB-OFDM UWB systems and conventional wireless Complex Orthogonal Space-Time Block Code (CO STBC) Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems is discovered. This allows us to quantify the pairwise error probability (PEP) of the proposed system and derive the general decoding method for the implemented STFCs. Based on the theoretical analysis results of PEP, we can further quantify the diversity order and coding gain of MB-OFDM UWB systems, and derive the design criteria for STFCs, …

Novel Cooperative Communication Schemes For Space-Time-Frequency Coded Mb-Ofdm Uwb, Le Chung Tran, Xiaojing Huang, Alfred Mertins, Eryk Dutkiewicz
Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)
Cooperative communication has been intensively considered for general wireless and sensor networks. However, it has been almost untouched in Space-Time-Frequency Coded Multi-band OFDM Ultra-Wideband (STFC MB-OFDM UWB) systems. This paper thus proposes two cross-layer designs for cooperative communication, namely Simple Cooperative Communication Scheme (SCCS) and Advanced Cooperative Communication Scheme (ACCS), in slow fading scenarios. In the former, nodes always cooperate with one another despite the possibly erroneous reception at the partner nodes, while in the latter, nodes cooperate only in the case of successful reception. Simulations show that these schemes may considerably improve the performance of STFC MB-OFDM UWB without …

Reduced Training Of Convolutional Neural Networks For Pedestrian Detection, Giang Hoang Nguyen, Son Lam Phung, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum
Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)
Pedestrian detection is a vision task with many practical applications in video surveillance, road safety, autonomous driving and military. However, it is much more difficult compared to the detection of other visual objects, because of the tremendous variations in the inner region as well as the outer shape of the pedestrian pattern. In this paper, we propose a pedestrian detection approach that uses convolutional neural network (CNN) to differentiate pedestrian and non-pedestrian patterns. Among several advantages, the CNN integrates feature extraction and classification into one single, fully adaptive structure. It can extract two-dimensional features at increasing scales, and it is …

Management of a telecommunication network involves the requirement to monitor and manage devices on local and wide area networks (for optical, wired and wireless). Devices used to perform this function are referred to as Remote Monitoring devices or network probes. This paper investigates the prototyping of a network probe which uses an embedded internet microprocessor to collect and send data to a network monitor. The device uses the TINI Internet Interface developed by Dallas Semiconductor. This device was chosen as the ethernet driver has a promiscuous mode which potentially allows the capture of all packets sent on the ethernet connection …

A Software Defined Radio test bed using the Gnu Radio project was installed on Unix boxes and modified so that estimates of the channel state coefficients were taken for a Multiple Input Multiple output (MIMO) system to take advantage of space time transmission at a frqeuency of 2.4GHz. This system was modified to provide a Space Time Spreading test bed. The test bed was modified so that multiple access interference was experienced by off-setting different users data streams. The Walsh-Hadamard and Wysocki (low correlation) spreading sequences were deployed in the test bed to compare their Bit Error Rate performance. We …

The balance between computational complexity and the architecture bottlenecks the development of Neural Networks (NNs), An architecture that is too large or too small will influence the performance to a large extent in terms of generalization and computational cost. In the past, saliency analysis has been employed to determine the most suitable structure, however, it is time-consuming and the performance is not robust. In this paper, a family of new algorithms for pruning elements (weighs and hidden neurons) in Neural Networks is presented based on Compressive Sampling (CS) theory. The proposed framework makes it possible to locate the significant elements, …

Constructions of square, maximum rate complex orthogonal space–time block codes (CO STBCs) are well known, however codes constructed via the known methods include numerous zeros, which impede their practical implementation. By modifying the Williamson and Wallis-Whiteman arrays to apply to complex matrices, we propose two methods of construction of square, order-4n CO STBCs from square, order-n codes which satisfy certain properties. Applying the proposed methods, we construct square, maximum rate, order-8 CO STBCs with no zeros, such that the transmitted symbols are equally dispersed through transmit antennas. Those codes, referred to as the improved square CO STBCs, have the advantages …

We describe a technique that permits broad-band, field-dependent ferromagnetic and electron paramagnetic resonance absorption measurements that is applicable to thin films and patterned micro-/nanostructured arrays and is based on a wire-wound meanderline approach. Techniques to prepare meanderlines and perform microwave measurements are described along with some demonstrations involving an electron paramagnetic resonance calibration/test material, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl, and a ferromagnetic cobalt thin film.

The Role Of Optical Rectification In The Generation Of Terahertz Radiation From Gabias, Krunal Radhanpura, Stuart Hargreaves, Roger A. Lewis, M Henini
Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers
We report on a detailed study of the emission of terahertz-frequency electromagnetic radiation from layers of GaBiyAs1−y (0≤yBand (001) GaAs substrates. We measure two orthogonally polarized components of the terahertz radiation emitted under excitation by ultrashort near-infrared laser pulses in both transmission and reflection geometries as a function of the crystal rotation about its surface normal as well as the effect of in-plane magnetic field and pump fluence on the terahertz emission. We conclude that the principal mechanism for terahertz generation is via optical rectification rather than transient currents.

This article discusses the results of transmission electron microscopy ~TEM!-based characterization of strontium-doped lead zirconate titanate ~PSZT! thin films. The thin films were deposited by radio frequency magnetron sputtering at 3008C on gold-coated silicon substrates, which used a 15 nm titanium adhesion layer between the 150 nm thick gold film and ~100! silicon. The TEM analysis was carried out using a combination of high-resolution imaging, energy filtered imaging, energy dispersive X-ray ~EDX! analysis, and hollow cone illumination. At the interface between the PSZT films and gold, an amorphous silicon-rich layer ~about 4 nm thick! was observed, with the film composition …

In the quest for catalysts for the electrocatalytic reduction of , a cobalt phthalocyanine/polypyrrole (CoPc/PPy) composite electrode has been developed. The electrode is prepared by drop casting CoPc onto the PPy film from the CoPc/tetrahydrofuran solution (1 mg/mL). The onset potential for reduction occurred at potentials 160 mV more positive than observed with a simple PPy electrode. Furthermore, in the potentiostatic electrolysis, the catalytic current for reduction at CoPc/PPy was very stable, with a higher current density and current efficiency when compared to the PPy electrode.

Some sessile invertebrates are capable of maintaining space in barren habitats produced by sea urchins, thereby creating species-rich patches in a species-poor landscape. We sought to determine the role of a large and common barnacle, Austrobalanus imperator, in the establishment and persistence of these species-rich patches. Barnacle density was modified in 2 experiments at sites in southeastern Australia. The first experiment concerned community establishment and involved the addition of barnacles in 4 densities (zero [control], low, medium and high) to plots on vertical rock surfaces. The addition of barnacles at ecologically realistic densities and spatial arrangements rapidly resulted in statistically …

The helicase loader protein DnaI (the Bacillus subtilis homologue of Escherichia coli DnaC) is required to load the hexameric helicase DnaC (the B. subtilis homologue of E. coli DnaB) onto DNA at the start of replication. While the C-terminal domain of DnaI belongs to the structurally well-characterized AAA+ family of ATPases, the structure of the N-terminal domain, DnaI-N, has no homology to a known structure. Three-dimensional structure determination by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy shows that DnaI presents a novel fold containing a structurally important zinc ion. Surface plasmon resonance experiments indicate that DnaI-N is largely responsible for binding of …

Participatory modeling is increasingly recognised as an effective way to assist collective decision-making processes in the domain of natural resource management. This paper introduces a framework for evaluating projects that have adopted a participatory modeling approach. This framework – known as the ‘Protocol of Canberra’ – was developed through a collaboration between French and Australian researchers engaged in participatory modeling and evaluation research. The framework seeks to assess the extent to which different participatory modeling practices reinforce or divert from the theoretical assumptions they are built upon. The paper discusses the application of the framework in three case-studies, two from …

Plant invasions of natural communities are commonly associated with reduced species diversity and altered ecosystem structure and function. This study investigated the effects of invasion and management of the woody shrub Lantana camara (lantana) in wet sclerophyll forest on the south-east coast of Australia. The effects of L. camara invasion and management on resident vegetation diversity and recruitment were determined as well as if invader management initiated community recovery. Vascular plant species richness, abundance and composition were surveyed and compared across L. camara invaded, non-invaded and managed sites following L. camara removal during a previous control event by land managers. …

Alien plant invaders significantly threaten native community diversity, although it is poorly understood whether invasion initiates a linear or non-linear loss of resident species. Where low abundances of an invader have little impact on native species diversity, then a threshold level may exist, above which native communities rapidly decline. Our aim was to assess the broadscale effects of an alien thicket-forming shrub, lantana (Lantana camara L.), on wet sclerophyll forest in southeastern Australia. Vascular plant species richness, abundance and composition were measured and compared along a gradient of lantana invasion. White-rot fungi, unlike bacteria in conventional activated sludge system, can degrade wide varieties of textile dyes. Their large scale implementation, however, has been impeded due to lack of appropriate reactor system that can sustain stable performance under non-sterile environment. In this study, contrary to virtually complete decoloration of an azo dye (Acid Orange II, 100 mg L−1) in pure culture batch test, a fungal membrane bioreactor (MBR) achieved 93% removal during long-term non-sterile operation at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 1 d. Through a set of novel observations made in MBR and parallel batch tests, the interrelated factors responsible …

What makes companies such as Wal-Mart in the U.S., Metro Group in Germany and Tesco in the United Kingdom, so willing to adopt RFID technology? More precisely, what are those factors that matter most and least to firms when considering an investment in RFID? And how does the importance of such factors vary between adopters and non-adopters? The answers to these questions are important because they indicate where future development effort should be directed to increase the rate of RFID adoption. To begin, we conducted a large survey of 133 RFID Journal readers. The industries represented in the sample include: …

This paper discusses a new blend of methods developed to answer the question of where creativity is in the city. Experimentation with new methods was required because of empirical short- comings with existing creative city research techniques; but also to respond to increasingly important questions of where nascent economic activities occur outside the formal sector, and governmental spheres of planning and economic development policy. In response we discuss here how qualitative methods can be used to address such concerns, based on experiences from an empirical project charged with the task of documenting creative activity in Darwinöa small city in Australia's …
