Cross-Layer Analysis Of The End-To-End Delay Distribution In Wireless Sensor Networks, Yunbo Wang, Mehmet C. Vuran, Steve Goddard Jan 2009

Cross-Layer Analysis Of The End-To-End Delay Distribution In Wireless Sensor Networks, Yunbo Wang, Mehmet C. Vuran, Steve Goddard

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

Emerging applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) require real-time quality of service (QoS) guarantees to be provided by the network. However, designing real-time scheduling and communication solutions for these networks is challenging since the characteristics of QoS metrics in WSNs are not well known yet. Due to the nature of wireless connectivity, it is infeasible to satisfy worst-case QoS requirements in WSNs. Instead, probabilistic QoS guarantees should be provided, which requires the definition of probabilistic QoS metrics. To provide an analytical tool for the development of real-time solutions, in this paper, the distribution of end-to-end delay in multi-hop WSNs is …

College Teaching And The Development Of Reasoning, Robert G. Fuller, Thomas C. Campbell, Dewey I. Dykstra, Jr., Scott M. Stevens

Robert G. Fuller Publications

Part of the foundation for the research in physics education house of physics was the work of Robert Karplus and Arnold Arons in the 1970s. They expressed a strong concern about conceptual understanding and mature reasoning of students. Karplus led a team of AAPT members to produce a workshop, Physics Teaching and the Development of Reasoning, that was published by the AAPT in booklet form in 1975. That work was broadened to include other college disciplines and was offered on many campuses for faculty development activities for more than a decade. This book, with the AAPT booklet in Appendix B, …

Electron-Induced Bond Breaking At Low Energies In Hcooh And Glycine: The Role Of Very Short-Lived Σ* Anion States, Gordon A. Gallup, Paul Burrow, Ilya I. Fabrikant Jan 2009

Electron-Induced Bond Breaking At Low Energies In Hcooh And Glycine: The Role Of Very Short-Lived Σ* Anion States, Gordon A. Gallup, Paul Burrow, Ilya I. Fabrikant

Gordon Gallup Publications

Cross sections for dissociative electron attachment (DEA) to formic acid and glycine are calculated by the resonant R-matrix theory. A model with one effective reaction coordinate close to the O-H stretch motion is employed. The choice of the anion R-matrix pole and the surface amplitude as functions of the reaction coordinate for formic acid are based on scattering phase-shift calculations using the finite element discrete model. For glycine the input parameters are adjusted to reproduce experimental data. The results show that the mechanism of DEA in these molecules is similar to that for the hydrogen halides and involves electron …

C1 Modules With Respect To A Hereditary Torsion Theory, Tahi̇re Özen

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

An R-module M is said to be a C1-module if every closed submodule of M is a direct summand. In this paper we introduce and investigate the concept of the \tau-C1 module for a hereditary torsion theory \tau on Mod-R. \tau-C1 modules are a generalization of C1-modules.

Superconducting State Parameters Of Al-Li Binary Alloys, Aditya M. Vora Jan 2009

Superconducting State Parameters Of Al-Li Binary Alloys, Aditya M. Vora

Turkish Journal of Physics

Theoretical computation of superconducting state parameters (SSP) viz. electron-phonon coupling strength \lambda , Coulomb pseudopotential \mu^* , transition temperature T_C , isotope effect exponent \alpha and effective interaction strength N_o V of face centered cubic Al_{1-C} Li_C binary alloys have been made extensively in the present work using a model potential formalism for the first time. A considerable influence of various exchange and correlation functions on \lambda and \mu^* is found from the present study. The present results of the SSP are found in qualitative agreement with the available experimental data wherever exist.

[Introduction To] The Hardy Space Of A Slit Domain, William T. Ross, Alexandra Aleman, Nathan S. Feldman

Bookshelf

If H is a Hilbert space and T : H ? H is a continous linear operator, a natural question to ask is: What are the closed subspaces M of H for which T M ? M? Of course the famous invariant subspace problem asks whether or not T has any non-trivial invariant subspaces. This monograph is part of a long line of study of the invariant subspaces of the operator T = M (multiplication by the independent variable z, i. e. , M f = zf ) on a z z Hilbert space of analytic functions on a bounded …

On The Socles Of Characteristic Subgroups Of Abelian P-Groups, P. V. Danchev, Brendan Goldsmith Jan 2009

On The Socles Of Characteristic Subgroups Of Abelian P-Groups, P. V. Danchev, Brendan Goldsmith

Articles

Fully invariant subgroups of an Abelian p-group have been the object of a good deal of study, while characteristic subgroups have received somewhat less attention. Recently the socles of fully invariant subgroups have been studied and this led to the notion of a socle-regular group. The present work replaces the fully invariant subgroups with characteristic ones and leads in a natural way to the notion of a strongly socle-regular group. A surprising relationship, mirroring that between transitive and fully transitive groups, is obtained.

Storm Surge Dynamics Over Wide Continental Shelves: Numerical Experiments Using The Finite-Volume Coastal Ocean Model, Joao Lima Rego Jan 2009

Storm Surge Dynamics Over Wide Continental Shelves: Numerical Experiments Using The Finite-Volume Coastal Ocean Model, Joao Lima Rego

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Storm surge is an abnormal rise of the sea surface caused by atmospheric forcing, including the wind stress and atmospheric pressure associated with extra-tropical and tropical cyclones. Hurricanes and typhoons have a great impact on coastal regions, and can cause severe loss of lives and great damages. A systematic investigation of storm surge impact to the coasts of Louisiana and Texas, where the continental shelf reaches up to 200 km in width, is conducted here using the hydrodynamics Finite-Volume Coastal Ocean Model, FVCOM (Chen et al., 2003). The model is applied to the northern Gulf of Mexico to simulate the …

Electron Angular Distributions In He Single Ionization Impact By H₂⁺ Ions At 1 Mev, Shaofeng Zhang, J. Suske, Daniel Fischer, K. U. Kuehnel, Siegbert Hagmann, Alexander B. Voitkiv, B. Najjari, Achim Krauss, Robert Moshammer, Joachim Hermann Ullrich, Xinwen Ma Jan 2009

Electron Angular Distributions In He Single Ionization Impact By H₂⁺ Ions At 1 Mev, Shaofeng Zhang, J. Suske, Daniel Fischer, K. U. Kuehnel, Siegbert Hagmann, Alexander B. Voitkiv, B. Najjari, Achim Krauss, Robert Moshammer, Joachim Hermann Ullrich, Xinwen Ma

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

For the first time we investigated in a kinematically complete experiment the ionization of helium in collisions with H2+-molecular ions at 1 MeV. Using two separate detectors, the orientation of the projectile H2+-molecular ions was determined at the instance of the collision. The electron angular distribution was measured by a "Reaction Microscope". The observed structures are found in agreement with theoretical calculations, indicating that the ionized electron of He shows a slight preferential emission direction parallel to the molecular axis.

Sequential and direct two-photon double ionization (DI) of D2 molecule is studied experimentally and theoretically at a photon energy of 38.8 eV. Experimental and theoretical kinetic energy releases of D++D+fragments, consisting of the contributions of sequential DI via the D2+(1sσg) state and direct DI via a virtual state, agree well with each other.

The study of isotope shifts and hyperfine effects in dielectronic recombination (DR) resonance spectra strikes a conceptually new path for investigations of nuclear properties such as charge radius, spin, magnetic moment of nuclei or lifetimes of long-lived excited nuclear states. A series of DR experiments with heavy three-electron ions (Li-like) was performed at the heavy-ion storage ring ESR of the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt, Germany. In a pilot experiment the two stable isotopes A=142 and A=150 of neodymium ANd57+ were investigated. From the displacement of DR resonances the isotope shifts δE142,150(2s - 2Pl/2) …

Unified Treatment Of Even And Odd Anharmonic Oscillators Of Arbitrary Degree, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Andrey Surzhykov, Jean Zinn-Justin Jan 2009

Unified Treatment Of Even And Odd Anharmonic Oscillators Of Arbitrary Degree, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Andrey Surzhykov, Jean Zinn-Justin

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a unified treatment, including higher-order corrections, of anharmonic oscillators of arbitrary even and odd degree. Our approach is based on a dispersion relation which takes advantage of the [script P][script T] symmetry of odd potentials for imaginary coupling parameter, and of generalized quantization conditions which take into account instanton contributions. We find a number of explicit new results, including the general behavior of large-order perturbation theory for arbitrary levels of odd anharmonic oscillators, and subleading corrections to the decay width of excited states for odd potentials, which are numerically significant.

The Role Of Climate Variability And Riverine Pulsing In The Community Dynamics Of Estuarine Nekton In Breton Sound, Louisiana, Bryan Patrick Piazza Jan 2009

The Role Of Climate Variability And Riverine Pulsing In The Community Dynamics Of Estuarine Nekton In Breton Sound, Louisiana, Bryan Patrick Piazza

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Climate controls biotic community composition at multiple spatiotemporal scales through variability in environmental control mechanisms (assembly filters). This research investigated the role of climate variability in the community dynamics of estuarine nekton in Breton Sound estuary, Louisiana, and, specifically the effects of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), freshwater discharge, and a tropical cyclone. A teleconnection was found between ENSO and juvenile brown shrimp (Farfantepenaeus aztecus) abundance in Breton Sound from 1988 – 2007. ENSO affected winter weather conditions (air pressure, temperature and precipitation), and spring brown shrimp abundance in Breton Sound. Juvenile brown shrimp abundance lagged ENSO by …

Spatial Clustering Using The Likelihood Function, April Kerby Jan 2009

Spatial Clustering Using The Likelihood Function, April Kerby

Department of Statistics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Work

Researchers have been using clustering algorithms for many years to group similar observations based on a set of recorded characteristics. The majority of these algorithms maximize the similarity of the observations within a cluster, while at the same time maximize the dissimilarity with observations in other clusters. However, nearly all of the current clustering algorithms do not take into account the actual geographic location of the observation during the clustering process. This dissertation consists of three papers which propose a method to incorporate the geographical location of an observation into the clustering algorithm, known as spatial clustering.

The first paper …

Holocene Evolution And Avulsion History Of The Lower Mississippi River, Yazoo Basin, Ms, Eric Prokocki Jan 2009

Holocene Evolution And Avulsion History Of The Lower Mississippi River, Yazoo Basin, Ms, Eric Prokocki

LSU Master's Theses

Optically stimulated luminescence dates coupled with paleohydrological estimations from lower Mississippi River (LMR) meander belts within the Yazoo Basin, MS provide new insight into the geochronological and hydrologic history of the LMR throughout the Holocene period. According to OSL dates, there are only three temporally equivalent LMR meandering river regime sediment packages, and not five as previously assumed from past geochronological research initiatives within the lower Mississippi Valley (LMV). The three geochronological sediment packages from oldest to youngest are thus represented by the following LMR meander belts: Early Holocene Chronostratigraphic Package – ca. 9.19 to 8.07 ka represented by the …

Measurement Of Trilinear Gauge Boson Couplings From Ww + Wz Lvjj Events In Pp Collisions At √S= 1.96 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration Jan 2009

Measurement Of Trilinear Gauge Boson Couplings From Ww + Wz → Lvjj Events In Pp Collisions At √S= 1.96 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present a direct measurement of trilinear gauge boson couplings at γWW and ZWW vertices in WW and WZ events produced in pp collisions at √s= 1.96 TeV. We consider events with one electron or muon, missing transverse energy, and at least two jets. The data were collected using the D0 detector and correspond to 1.1 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. Considering two different relations between the couplings at the γWW and ZWW vertices, we measure these couplings at 68% C.L. to be κγ = 1.07+0.26-0.29, λ = 0.00-0.06+0.06, …

Evidence Of Ww And Wz Production With Lepton + Jets Final States In Pp Collisions At √S = 1.96 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration Jan 2009

Evidence Of Ww And Wz Production With Lepton + Jets Final States In Pp Collisions At √S = 1.96 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present first evidence for WW + WZ production in lepton + jets final states at a hadron collider. The data correspond to 1.07 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron in pp collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV. The observed cross section for WW + WZ production is 20.2 ± 4.5 pb, consistent with the standard model and more precise than previous measurements in fully leptonic final states. The probability that background fluctuations alone produce this excess is 10-6, which corresponds to a significance of 4.4 standard deviations.

The Surface Core Level Shift For Lithium At The Surface Of Lithium Borate, David Wooten, Ihor Ketsman, Jie Xiao, Yaroslav B. Losovyj, J. C. Petrosky, J. Mcclory, Ya. V. Burak, V. T. Adamiv, Peter A. Dowben Jan 2009

The Surface Core Level Shift For Lithium At The Surface Of Lithium Borate, David Wooten, Ihor Ketsman, Jie Xiao, Yaroslav B. Losovyj, J. C. Petrosky, J. Mcclory, Ya. V. Burak, V. T. Adamiv, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

The shallow Li 1s core level exhibits a surface-to-bulk core level shift for the stoichiometric Li2B4O7 (1 1 0) surface. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy was used to identify Li1s bulk and surface core level components at binding energies –56.5 ± 0.4 and –53.7 ± 0.5 eV, respectively. We find photoemission evidence for surface states of Li2B4O7 (1 1 0) that exist in the gap of the projected bulk density of states. The existence of surface states is consistent with the large surface-to-bulk core level shift for the Li 1s core.

Anisotropic Magnetoresistance And Planar Hall Effect In Epitaxial Films Of La0.7ca0.3mno3, N. Naftalis, Y. Bason, J. Hoffman, X. Hong, C. H. Ahn, L. Klein Jan 2009

Anisotropic Magnetoresistance And Planar Hall Effect In Epitaxial Films Of La0.7ca0.3mno3, N. Naftalis, Y. Bason, J. Hoffman, X. Hong, C. H. Ahn, L. Klein

Xia Hong Publications

We measured the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and the planar Hall effect (PHE) in a [001] oriented epitaxial thin film of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO) as a function of magnetic field, temperature, and current direction relative to the crystal axes. We find that both AMR and PHE in LCMO depend strongly on the current orientation relative to the crystal axes, and we demonstrate the applicability of AMR and PHE equations based on a fourth order magnetoresistance tensor consistent with the film symmetry.

High-Mobility Few-Layer Graphene Field Effect Transistors Fabricated On Epitaxial Ferroelectric Gate Oxides, X. Hong, A. Posadas, K. Zou, C. H. Ahn, J. Zhu

Xia Hong Publications

The carrier mobility μ of few-layer graphene (FLG) field-effect transistors increases tenfold when the SiO2 substrate is replaced by single-crystal epitaxial Pb(Zr0.2Ti0:8)O3 (PZT). In the electron-only regime of the FLG, μ reaches 7 X 104 cm2 / Vs at 300 K for n = 2.4 X 1012=cm2, 70% of the intrinsic limit set by longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonons; it increases to 1.4 X 105 cm2 / Vs at low temperature. The temperature-dependent resistivity p(T) reveals a clear signature of LA phonon scattering, yielding …

Quantum Scattering Time And Its Implications On Scattering Sources In Graphene, X. Hong, K. Zou, J. Zhu Jan 2009

Quantum Scattering Time And Its Implications On Scattering Sources In Graphene, X. Hong, K. Zou, J. Zhu

Xia Hong Publications

We determine the quantum scattering time Tq in six graphene samples with mobility of 4 400<μ <17 000 cm2 /V s over a wide range of carrier density (1.2<n<6X1012/cm2). Tq derived from Shubnikov–de Haas oscillation ranges ~25–74 fs, corresponding to a single-particle level broadening of 4.5–13 meV. The ratio of the transport to quantum scattering time Tt /Tq spans 1.5–5.1 in these samples, which can be quantitatively understood combining scattering from short-ranged centers and charged impurities located within 2 nm of the graphene sheet. Our results suggest that charges residing on the SiO …

Semiclassical Propagation Method For Tunneling Ionization, Ilya I. Fabrikant, Gordon A. Gallup Jan 2009

Semiclassical Propagation Method For Tunneling Ionization, Ilya I. Fabrikant, Gordon A. Gallup

Gordon Gallup Publications

We apply the semiclassical propagation technique to tunneling ionization in atomic and molecular systems. Semiclassical wave functions and the tunneling flux are calculated from the solution of the classical equations of motion in the complex time plane. We illustrate this method by rederiving the known result for the decay rate of a negative ion in a weak electric field. We then obtain numerical results for atomic hydrogen, H2+, H2, and Ar, and compare them with the results of the asymptotic [Ammosov-Delone-Krainov (ADK)] theory. The asymptotic theory gives surprisingly good results for the atomic and molecular …

Scattering And Bound-State Solutions To The Wave Equation For One Electron In The Presence Of A Physical Dipole, Gordon A. Gallup Jan 2009

Scattering And Bound-State Solutions To The Wave Equation For One Electron In The Presence Of A Physical Dipole, Gordon A. Gallup

Gordon Gallup Publications

This paper presents a quantum-mechanical analysis of the interaction of one electron with a physical dipole (two physically separated charges). Aspects of threshold laws in the continuous spectrum are treated. In addition there are determinations of energies of some dipole bound states. The bound-state calculations are used as a model for certain high dipole moment molecules, where, together with empirical data, an equivalent dipole length may be determined. These model calculations predict that the bound dipole orbital in high dipole molecule ions should have a node between its valence part and the more remote part where the majority of the …
